Game Recaps from Wednesday, October 29th
Salt River 4 - Surprise 4 (11 innings)
The Rafters and Saguaros went the extra two frames and still couldn't come up with a victor, ending in a 4-4 stalemate. 2B Trevor Story (SRR) led the Salt River offense with a solo homer and a single, and CF Andrew Aplin (SRR) walked three times and stole a base, also driving in one and scoring once. Aplin also made a fielding error, struck out, and was caught stealing. 3B Brandon Drury (SRR) and 1B Ryan Casteel (SRR) both doubled and singled with Drury also working a walk and scoring once. RF Hunter Renfroe (SUR) continued his hot hitting, driving in two with a double and single, scoring once. SS Trea Turner (SUR) singled and struck out twice, stole a pair of bases and scored once. DH Jace Peterson (SUR) also stole a base, reaching twice on a pair of singles and crossing home once. CF Mallex Smith (SUR) and C Luke Maile (SUR) both singled two times with Smith also driving home one.
RHP Anthony DeSclafani (SRR) put in yeoman's work (by AFL standards) with five innings pitched, allowing two runs on eight hits and a walk, striking out five. The opposing starter was RHP Sam Wolff (SUR) threw two innings, allowing an unearned run with a walk and a strike out, also making a throwing error. The Rafters pen only allowed one hit in the final four innings, led by RHP Jimmie Sherfy (SRR) who threw two scoreless with one hit allowed and one strike out.
Mesa 7 - Scottsdale 5
A massive seven run inning propelled Mesa to a 7-5 win after holding off a late charge by the Scorpions. C Sean Ochinko (MSS) plated two with three hits in the game, knocking a double and two singles with one run scored. Four other Solar Sox players had multi-hit games with DH Cal Towey (MSS) hitting a single and a double with a walk, a run driven in, a run scored and a strike out. CF Boog Powell (MSS) added two walks to his two singles, coming around to score once. 3B Eric Stamets (MSS) singled twice and scored, and LF Dwight Smith Jr (MSS) picked up two singles, drove home one and also scored once. RF Tyler Austin (SCO) brought most of the Scorpions offense, driving in three with three hits including a double, also scoring once and getting picked off at first. C Kyle Higashioka (SCO) also doubled and scored, working a walk as well.
RHP Rob Whalen (SCO) took the ball for Scottsdale and gave them four scoreless innings, allowing just two hits and a walk while striking out two. LHP Nate Smith (MSS) was almost as good starting for Mesa, surrendering one run in four innings on four hits and a pair of walks, punching out four. Neither factored in the decision as RHP Chris O'Grady (SCO) got the win with two perfect relief innings, striking out one and getting his third win. RHP Julian Hilario (MSS) took the onus of the loss by giving up five runs in 1.1 innings with five hits and a walk allowed with two punch outs.
Peoria 5 - Glendale 4
A roller coaster 9th inning ended with Peoria scoring four times to head home with the win 5-4 over the Desert Dogs. RF Edward Salcedo (PEJ) doubled two times and drove in one for the Javelinas, scoring once with a strike out. 1B Jacob Wilson (PEJ) kicked in a triple and a single, plating two while scoring twice and striking out once. LF Kyle Wren (PEJ), a member of Peoria's taxi squad, singled two times and showed his speed with a stolen base but was stranded both times. CF Kes Carter (PEJ) drove in two and stole a base with a single and a sac fly while 2B Breyvic Valera (PEJ) also stole a base. 1B Nick Ramirez (GDD) racked up three singles and drove in one but also made his third error of the AFL. SS Corey Seager (GDD) went deep for a solo shot, and DH Steven Moya (GDD) doubled and scored while ending a strike out away from the Golden Sombrero. 3B Jason Esposito (GDD) also doubled, scored, and drove in one with a strike out while C Shawn Zarraga (GDD) singled and walked, scoring once.
Both starters pitched admirably through four innings with each allowing one run before being lifted. LHP Wei-Chung Wang (GDD) gave up four hits with no walks and a strike out, also inducing eight ground outs to one fly out with a wild pitch mixed in. RHP Tyrell Jenkins (PEJ) walked two and surrendered three hits with one strike out. Neither starter would end up with a decision as RHP Grant Sides (PEJ) earned the win and RHP Zach Cooper (PEJ) worked the save with RHP Blake Smith (GDD) blowing the save and getting tagged with the loss. Sides struck out two in a scoreless frame, making a fielding error in the process and Cooper danced around two runs scored and three hits to hold on for the save. Smith had a disastrous 9th inning, giving up three hits and a walk with all four men scoring in his one inning of work.
Surprise Stadium, home of the Surprise Saguaros and the home field for the Peoria Javelinas this year, has pitchf/x installed so we can see velocity readings for each pitcher.
