Game Recaps from Tuesday, October 28th

Salt River 14 - Glendale 2

The boomsticks were in full force for Salt River as they pounded out 15 hits in their 14-2 drubbing of Glendale. DH Max Kepler (SRR) and RF Evan Marzilli (SRR) each tripled with Kepler driving in three while also walking once, scoring twice and striking out. Marzilli kicked in a single and a walk, scoring two times with a run batted in and two punch outs. LF Eddie Rosario (SRR) went 2-5 with a double, single, a run scored, run batted in, a strike out, and he was caught stealing. 1B Ryan Casteel (SRR) also doubled and plated two, he worked a walk, scored twice and struck out once. CF Andrew Aplin (SRR) reached base three times and stole a bag, driving in two with two singles and a run scored. 2B Taylor Featherston (SRR) also swiped a base and drove in three with two singles and two runs scored. SS Tim Anderson (GDD) was the only Glendale player to do any damage, hitting three base knocks including a double and a run scored. DH Corey Seager (GDD) had an RBI single, and RF Steven Moya (GDD) had a sac fly to drive in the other run.

Salt River starter RHP Vincent Velasquez (SRR) struck out six in five innings, allowing two runs on one base hit and a walk. His opposition was LHP Robbie Ray (GDD) who only lasted two frames, surrendering two earned and two unearned runs with four hits and two walks allowed, striking out one. RHP Tyler Wagner (GDD) took the biggest blow, only registering one out while giving up nine runs on six hits, two walks and one intentional walk with no strike outs. RHP Tyson Perez (SRR) finished the game with two scoreless innings, allowing one hit with no free passes or strike outs.

Peoria 2 - Mesa 1

Peoria and Mesa went down to the wire, tied at one before a trio of singles in the top of the 8th inning broke the stalemate and the Javelinas won 2-1. C Cody Stanley (PEJ) had the deciding blow, driving in RF Jordan Smith (PEJ) for the go-ahead run. Stanley also singled and stole his second base. 1B Patrick Leonard (PEJ) doubled for his only base hit, also striking out twice and making his third error while CF Bubba Starling (PEJ) was 1-4 with a double. SS Francisco Lindor (PEJ) drove in the other run for the Javelinas with a single, two strike outs, and he was caught stealing. CF Dalton Pompey (MSS) reached base three times, stealing two bases, working a pair of walks and hitting a single. RF Cal Towey (MSS) had the only multi-hit game with a pair of singles and the only run scored. LF Chad Hinshaw (MSS) drove in the only run with a single in the 6th inning.

Neither starting pitcher factored in the decision but both did not allow a run to score either. RHP Miguel Almonte (PEJ) went three innings, not allowing any runs or hits but walking three with three punch outs, a hit batter, balk, and a fielding error. His opposition was RHP Ivan Pineyro (MSS) who only recorded two outs before being lifted, striking out one and walking one. RHP Sam Tuivailala (PEJ) worked a scoreless relief inning for the win, walking two and striking out one with no hits allowed. RHP Ryan Doolittle (MSS) took the loss by surrendering a run in two innings on three hits, no free passes, and two strike outs.

Surprise 4 - Scottsdale 3

The Saguaros held off a late charge by the Scorpions to hold on to a 4-3 win. RF Hunter Renfroe (SUR) carried Surprise with a solo homer and an RBI double, scoring once and striking out once. LF Jesse Winker (SUR) continued his hot streak as well picking up two more hits including a double, single, and a walk, scoring once and also getting caught stealing. DH Sean Coyle (SUR) brought home two runs with a single and was also picked off first base as 2B Jace Peterson (SUR) worked a walk, singled, and stole a base. 3B Seth Mejias-Brean (SUR) scampered home twice after reaching on a walk and a single. C Elias Diaz (SCO) doubled and singled for the Scorpions, drawing a free pass and scoring once with an RBI. DH Dante Bichette Jr (SCO) reached base three times with a single and two walks, scoring once. 1B Josh Bell (SCO) knocked his sixth double of the Fall, scoring once with a walk and a strike out.

RHP Nick Howard (SUR) went home with the win after throwing two scoreless with two walks and a hit allowed, striking out one to move his record to 2-1. RHP Brandon Alger (SUR) handled the 9th inning with a scoreless frame, allowing a single and a walk with no strike outs. LHP Tom Harlan (SCO) had a solid start but it wasn't quite enough with two runs allowed in four frames, striking out seven with four hits allowed and no walks, taking his second loss.
