MILB Gameday Discussion 6/28
A strong day of pitching probables is on tap as Jose Fernandez makes his High-A debut and other top arms like Dylan Bundy are also slated to toe the rubber.
Probables:
AAA: Julio Teheran, Tyler Cloyd, and Andy Oliver
AA: Bobby Bundy, Anthony Ranuado, Trey McNutt, Kyle Heackthorn, David Holmberg, Ethan Martin, Zeke Spruill, and Kyle Lotzkar
A+: Jimmy Nelson, Jose Fernandez (A+ Debut), Dylan Bundy, Diamaster Delgado, and Jason Adam.
A-: Noah Syndergaard
Baseball America on Shelby Miller's start last night.
"Miller was skipped for a turn through the rotation so that he could work on his mechanics. On Wednesday night, we saw the results: improved control, a fastball that sat at 92 mph and touched 95 and a more consistent arm slot."

Cuban OF Yasiel Puig signed with the Dodgers
Most opinions I’ve read said Soler is better, Puig should be expected to have contact issues, etc. Yet somehow, Puig got 6 yrs., $42 million despite being two years older than Soler.

Dodgers overpaid, by a lot, IMO
Projections last week (even before the botched showcase in Mexico) were that Puig would get in the $15-$20 million range. What surprises me is that (according to one report), the $42M was not even the highest offer. Scouting reports are sketchy at best, so I’m apt to agree with doublestix - huge gamble.

Elasicity of supply, my friend. When the supply is fixed at one, and there are multiple bidders, the price will skyrocket

Not even this , although fact
Its simply that the Dodgers have probably Millions on top of Millions to play around with.
Similar reason the Angels snagged Pujols so much money. When you have that much revenue and fans….. you can afford moves like this with some left to spare.

That explains their ability to pay
It doesn’t explain why the market equilibrium price was driven so high for this player (LA has apparently barely seen him at all!), when you compare with what other players have got.
While the Dodgers can certainly afford to a lot for a player, they still want to to maximize the value they are getting: they aren’t going to just throw away money and pay way over the market out of the kindness of their hearts.
by MjwW on Jun 28, 2025 5:13 PM EDT up reply actions
I like the move
Scouts love his upside and the Dodgers have money to spend. It may be an overpay but if he develops into a good regular it will be a solid value.

Most in the industry are speculating that they will become big time spenders this off-season. They are rumoured to be salivating for Hamels.

Their ability to pay really doesn't change the analysis
Even if there’s tons of money to be spent, there’s tons of ways to do so - MLB FAs, extending your own players, investing in scouting, development, etc….the focus should be about getting the best bang for the dollar.
In other words, the deal should be justified on the value the Dodgers got, not the fact they have money available.

Where is he on your top-100?
This isn’t a great way to measure his talent but just going off the money given to Cespedes and Soler, I’m guessing he has to be top-50 at the very least.

Re:
I just don’t get this or agree with it.
I get that there was maybe 1 more very good prospect on the market before the deadline. That said, the Dodgers (and at least one other team if you believe Heyman’s report that the Dodgers were not the highest bidder) must have valued him very highly. If not, why not just wait until after 7/2 when you know that you can get comparable talent for much less. In many ways, the 7/2 deadline should be depressing value instead of increasing it. To use the furby analogy above, it’s like knowing that furbies are going to drop in price substantially and there’s no reason why you can’t wait until they drop. Teams don’t outbid each other just to do it which makes me think that a few teams fell in love with him. Plus, for the same money, they could have gotten a pretty useable FA on the open market. It just doesn’t make sense to act like they paid that much for no reason.
I’m guessing that there is a discrepancy between what Badler and Law are saying and what some team’s see in him. Otherwise, this move just doesn’t make sense.
by Dfarth on Jun 28, 2025 4:51 PM EDT up reply actions
Because teams want to get as much talent as possible
The Dodgers will spend the max after 7/2, as basically every team will (or should anyway).
The mistake in your analogy above is that it assumes everybody wants (or needs) just 1 Furby. But that’s not the case with prospects - more is better. And right now, there was only one significant prospect on the market who was available for a cash price - Puig. Now, theoretically, teams could agree not to sign him, and then someone would get him for $2.9M max in two weeks - collusion. However, that’s not an equilbrium - assuming his true value as over $2.9M, then every team has the incentive to offer him the money now, and then also spend the $2.9M. And so the bidding goes and goes, until someone pays $42M.
by MjwW on Jun 28, 2025 5:22 PM EDT up reply actions
Re:
I don’t think there’s really a flaw in my argument because of the fact that money spent doesn’t necessarily have to go to the finite supply of foreign prospects. As you mentioned above, there are any number of things a team can spend money on to improve — scouting, development, facilities, free agents, medical staff, technology, etc. Clearly, regardless of the supply of prospects, the Dodgers think that spending $40+M on this one is a better use of their money than those other things.
I realize having more prospects is better — but that doesn’t diminish the fact they are spending an extraordinary amount of money on one unknown commodity. If the Dodgers even thought they could get even 1 comparable talent after 7/2 for $2.9M — and are paying this one $42M — that seems really stupid to me.
Again, I think the Dodgers and at least one other team must have fallen in love with him. There’s no other reasonable explanation to me.
by Dfarth on Jun 28, 2025 5:34 PM EDT up reply actions
Dodgers didn't even offer the biggest contract
according to most experts.
Also people keep saying well why not just wait to 7/2 and sign a similar talent. If you have the money why not sign both the guy on 7/2 and Puig?
Also we all know Law can be a bit of an arrogant douche. I still follow hi and read his articles but whenever he has a habit of saying outrageous things that get people riled up. He’s the Skip Bayless/Stephen A. Smith of the scouting world.
You have to realize that none of these guys have seen him play much if at all. Especially with his suspensions. There’s a bit more unknown about PUig because of how quickly this has happened. The only thing people seem to agree on is he’s a very good athlete, faster than both Soler and Puig and has great body(no homo) like both guys.
Basically no one really knows much about Puig. Goldstein questioned his bat but how can you question the bat of someone you haven’t seen play?

Also I wonder if Dodgers have a scout in Cuba
this may seem ridiculous but they have signed/drafted 5 Cuban players in the last year and a half. Their biggest international signing of 2011 was RAydel Sanchez, their 3rd pick this year was Onelkis Garcia, their 26th round pick was Alfredo Unzue, also signed 27 year old catcher Selme Angulo and lastly Puig who is probably their biggest international signing(although Bryan Munhoz has tons of potential).

I can’t believe this never occurred to me before. Bang on.
by Matt0330 on Jun 29, 2025 12:03 PM EDT up reply actions
To be clear
The Dodgers do have to value him around $40M for it to be rational (not necessarily quite that amount - if you valued at say $35M, you could maybe justify the extra amount since this one opportunity won’t come again). And they would have absolutely had to fall in love with his skills, to justify that tag. And personally, I think it is a massive overpay.
But, what I’m getting at is that the market for this player is not set at all by what you can get in terms of IFAs on July 2 and afterwards (as you focussed on initially, and still a little bit in your second response). It’s set by what the alternate uses of cash are - the things I mentioned above and you listed directly above). So basically, at $42M, and around $5M/WAR, that’s valuing him at basically 8 discounted WAR - that’s a lot.
Finally, the reason for initially focussing on the inelasticity of cupple for driving up the cost is that under circumstances that prevailed prior to the new CBA, the exact mechanism that you’re talking about - comparison/substitution to other J2 players - would serve to not drive his price so high. Even if you had a international budget of $40M, you would aim to maximize what you got for that $40M, and that would be far more than Yusel Puig. But that’s just not an option with the new CBA.
by MjwW on Jun 28, 2025 6:10 PM EDT up reply actions
Re:
We basically agree. My main point was that it isn’t the 7/2 deadline by itself that drove that price. That wouldn’t make sense…

Making a huge assumption of a fixed budget where you should maximize value
And ignoring an owners directive to sign a player regardless of cost in order to impart goodwill in a very toxic situation because of the previous owner.
There will always be deals that are outside of the budget and this appears to be one of them.

Threw first pitch FB a lot
Didn’t fall behind guys
Wasn’t afraid to throw his CB in any count after that
Went to the CB for an out pitch a lot
Threw 3-4 change ups according to the broadcast, with one a called 3rd strike
Couple of soft hit balls in the second led to two ER
Couple of IF singles, then a really hard hit 3B led to 2 ER in the 3rd
With the man on 3rd, another hard hit ball to the gap that Yelich bailed him out on
After that, there was one other pretty routine ball out to the waring track. No other hard hit GB or LDs

Can't really say I am
He really struggled the last two innings. Braves announcers mentioned that 21 of his first 29 pitches were strikes, so that means only 21 of the last 45 went for strikes. Unless he suddenly turned it on again, he was going to have trouble making it through the 5th and the middle of the Braves order.

Did well to limit the Braves to 2 R
I didn’t get to watch the first two innings, but he didn’t have any command in the third and fourth which is when he really got in trouble. He struggled to get swings and misses, which was pretty surprising. The Braves also didn’t seem to have any trouble picking up his offspeed stuff, which I think is probably something he’s going to have to deal with at the MLB level.
by nixa37 on Jun 28, 2025 8:50 PM EDT up reply actions
Worth noting that 4 of the 5 hits came on offspeed stuff
For all the talk of pitch tunneling, he didn’t seem to have the Braves confused at all as to what was coming. Might have had something to do with getting just 3 whiffs on the night.

tate
He hasn’t been nearly this bad as a pro previously . . .his season line basically reads “checked out and waiting for his valet to bring his car up front”. Unfortunate as there was/is definitely talent here.
I’m thinking we’re going to hear a not-terribly-surprising announcement at the end of this season regarding which sport happens to be Tate’s new favorite sport.
by mrkupe on Jun 29, 2025 10:29 AM EDT up reply actions
You are likely right
He’s managed to wait out the three years over which his bonus was spread. When he was suspended last year, the club talked about either holding back or restructuring the last of the bonus, but ultimately decided not to. I understand they just figured it wasn’t worth it because at some point, he’d have to be motivated by something other than the signing bonus (and the rush of smoking fake pot) if he was going to succeed.
I was one of the folks who argued to give him a shot this year because, when his head wasn’t shoved up his ass last season he actually performed well. But I’ve now heard enough comments on his propensity for sleeping on the couch in the clubhouse while people who actually want to be baseball players go do drills, and seen the exact same “seems to be sleepwalking” phrase more than once. Heading into the draft, someone with the club told Byron Buxton will be “what Donavan Tate would have been if he gave a shit.”
Matt Bush might be the biggest bust of a #1 overall pick ever, but he’ll go down as only the second-most expensive waste of a pick by the Padres last decade.
On the upside, one of the take-aways from those twin experiences is that the Padres now employ one of the largest scouting staffs in the game, and they may do more in-depth work to get to know their picks today than any other team.

Jaff Decker
is he hurt? havent heard from him since may
by gobruins12345 on Jun 29, 2025 1:28 PM EDT up reply actions
Yes
Foot injury. After an MRI, they sent him out to Peoria. I’m guessing the fact that Cody Decker just got shipped back to San Antonio to get additional at-bats means that the 4 week time period they put on it at the start of the month was overly optimistic and they might not get him back for a while.

Brody Colvin with another excellent outing. Another month like this and he’ll regain his prospect status

Relief stint seems to have done him well.
3.13 ERA and 27:7 K:BB in 23 innings (four starts) since.

So glad I picked him up in my dynasty league...
I thought he’d show a little this year, but this is 10x more than I expected or even could have hoped for.

CF Oscar Taveras
3-4 including a HR & a double, 2 RBI in the Texas League All Star Game.
MVP of the game too, obviously (although he probably could’ve been designated just that pre-game with reasonable certainty too).

Amen Brotha
Amen Brotha, he is amazing. Here are some good highlights from the game. . .
https://www.minorleagueball.com/2012/6/28/3123482/milb-gameday-6-28#106763442
Oscar’s blast is at :59 or so. With the simple, short step, quick turn, with the hands in an efficient starting place and, the ultra-stylish but, fundamentally sound finish, I have zero idea why anyone wouldn’t like his baseball swing.
i don’t rerally care much if anyone feels this is enciting an argument (it is, so what) or, trollish. It is the height of aroogance to take a very good minor league player and think that you know how they are supposed to swing the bat.
It is even more weird when said player clearly has a very, very sound baseball swing. The oddities surrounding Oscar never seem to cease.
It wasn’t so much that people had doubts but each one … one by one … were so absurd.
1) His BABIP in A-Bal?: Not a concern at all . it’s pretty clear he wasn’;t lucky last season, not enough to say anything negative as a prospect anyways.
2) His power on a scouting scale before the season?: He clearly has big-time power and, I’ve heard a scoutinjg concensus of 7 (from Jason Parks) on hjis power, which is backed up visually.
3) His makeup? Yes, makeup concerns were brought up: Now considered a positive in every report
4) Defense and athleticsm?: He is still learning there but, it is also clearly not a problem. Playing CF now, he has more than enough athleticsm for RF and, plenty of arm strength
5) Walks?: He walked a decent enough amount last year and, he is walking enough this year… aniother non-issuer. He recognizes pitches and can get into good counts. He just doesn’t come up there to walk, that’s all
6) The swing itself
Each and every one of these questions about him, are positives to his game and, they were before this season too, for the most part.

Tiny little question for you
If it’s the height of arrogance for us to think how he should swing, and you are saying he has a good swing ( which is stating how someone should swing ) are you not castigating yourself?
by pedrophile on Jun 29, 2025 3:57 PM EDT up reply actions 1 recs
Right
perhaps if my initial reasons for liking him as a prospect were based on analysis of his swing but, they were based mostly on his age and, his results. Then again, it depends on who is doing the evaluating as well. All of it, after all, is just my opinion. I say look at the swing, from differtent angles, and tell me what you think. I am just moreso surprised that anyone would object to it, that’s all.

BABIP
of course its gonna be high when you hit .386
amazing someone could find that to be an argument/doubt.
by Jake Rafferty on Jun 29, 2025 7:53 PM EDT up reply actions
You realize that's the entire point?
Things normalize over time…. even BABIP. I’m not even making this a discussion about OT, because that’s like beating my head against a wall with his fans on this site, but rather a general baseball point.
by bdlugz on Jun 30, 2025 1:13 AM EDT up reply actions
No it isn't like that
I’m the only one who is likie that among his fans, that I know of
AND, I’m perfectly willing to talk about any point about him or, any generall baseball point :) I have just never found a point being made about him - a negative point, that is - that held any water for me.
The point I was making, relating to your poiunt and to Oscar’s BABIP last year, wasn’t that it wasn’t high but, that people used it to make a larger point about him as a prospect because of it … he isn’t so good, he has much to prove and was just lucky, etc. I said he was both excellently great and, perhaps a bit lucky also. Good hitters tend to create nice BABIPs for themselves though.

No they don't normalize to the mean.
If that was the case all hitters would have almost the same batting line.
by pedrophile on Jun 30, 2025 5:45 PM EDT up reply actions
Yes, it is crazy
i had this debate last season here with a kid who wanted to say that the .260 hitting Xander had more power than the .386 hitting Oscat and just, calmly, “normalize” all of thier other hits and voila, all even. I just disagree with that entire way of looking at things.

It's like when someone is on a hot streak or cold streak and everyone talks about normalizing
That is just nonsense. Like when Josh Hamilton was tearing it up. It’s not like he was getting lucky. And then Josh was hitting poorly. It wasn’t “normalizing”, it was a player getting anxious and chasing everything. In his poor stretch he wasn’t unlucky, he actually was a worse hitter. For that stretch.
