What a contrast between the first two posts here today
One fantastic news, one awful.
A friend’s 2 year old niece was found facedown in a kiddie pool yesterday. They rushed her to the hospital and put her on life support, but they’ve declared her brain dead. The family is preparing to pull the plug.
Lots of perspective for me today.

My condolences to the family and friends of the little girl. Awful, awful news. Stuff like that just is not supposed to happen. But it does.

Blah iPhone
Premature postation.
I had high hopes too. Although they’re different players, I thought he would succeed where Springer came up short. And if you look at their numbers right now, it’s actually almost what you would have expected. One guy has more power but holes in his swing, the other guy gets on base more. I was hoping for more power, but maybe it’s coming in AA. I’m still silently rooting for Mahtook to value out even with Springer.
by Woodland League on Jun 27, 2025 8:17 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions
Which guy gets on base more, and which has more power?
Springer: .299/.380/.548
Mahtook: .293/.350/.407
by PissedMick on Jun 28, 2025 1:50 PM EDT up reply actions
Good point
I didn’t have the stats in front of me, but I’m impressed with Springer’s OBP. It’s been a steady progression, so he may be seeing less pitches in the zone? In the end though, I think AA will be a huge test to see if a.) his power is for real, b.) he can K less and c.) if without that power if his walks will decrease. For Mahtook, it’ll be big to see if: a.) he can maintain his avg, b.) if he can show more power outside the FSL, and c.) if he can get on base more.
by Woodland League on Jun 28, 2025 3:19 PM EDT up reply actions
yea obviously it is really really early
but I’m a lot happier with the prospects of the Rays future in the system with the way Mahtook has played and Guerreri has started, there is very slim pickings for top end talent right now.

Too many B/B+ guys without any elite players.
Sale, Guerrieri, Vettleson, Brett, Lee, Archer, etc… Guerrieri certainly could be elite by the end of the year though. Well, at least as elite as a guy in short season low-a can be.
by mr. maniac on Jun 27, 2025 7:34 PM EDT up reply actions
I don't see a problem with it

Starling Marte
2/3, 3B
.305/.903 BB rate: 8% K rate: 22% in June.
Is he starting to figure out the level or just a hot streak, as he’s had earlier this year? July should be helpful in cementing an answer.
by Mr. Smizik on Jun 27, 2025 3:25 PM EDT reply actions
Marte has 10 triples on the year now...
His walk rate is up this year (a bit) and his ISO is nearly .200 so I’ve been fairly encouraged by his season despite a lousy May. He still has some things to work on but I don’t think a meaningful 2nd half callup (more than a Sept. cup o’ coffee) is out of the question.
by KentuckyPirate on Jun 27, 2025 4:49 PM EDT up reply actions
I tend to agree w/ you......
Most of the fall-off of his average has been BABIP induced, as his power/walk (and even K #s) are all either improved or steady. In addition to his defense, he seems like he is just who we thought he was prior to this year.
My one concern still lies w/ his basestealing efficiency (or lack there of). W/ his speed, he should be much better in that area. Thankfully, I believe such a skill only gets better w/ experience and polish and age.
I’m pretty satisfied. I’d like to see him be really good again in the month of July and then possibly come up.

by Dbullsfan on Jun 27, 2025 8:53 PM EDT up reply actions
But he is the most likely.
Here is what BA said:
An average runner, Martin is a fast-twitch athlete who can make highlight-reel plays at shortstop, though he has plenty of work to do there. He has good range and a strong arm with good carry, but he’s also an upright defender who tends to field balls deep and needs to smooth out his actions.
Not sure how average speed plays in CF. If he doesn’t stay up the middle, the bat probably doesn’t play.

You're serious dense if you think you just made a remotely convincing argument
1) His minor league stats come from Vegas, which ridiculously inflates offensively production, at home and a fair bit on the road due to the PCL. As a point of reference, the Vegas team average was around .300 last year and in previous years.
2) More importantly, he’s 24 and has never got consistent at-bats in MLB, due to injuries, a manager who wouldn’t play him (Cito) and some mechanical inconsistencies which are on him. It’s asinine to call someone AAA under though circumstances.
Snider was rushed to the bigs by the Blue Jays, to their detriment and to his own. He started 2008 in High-A, ended up in the bigs - a pretty huge jump. And then big leaguers figured him out, and at that point he was jerked around. To put it in context, he was in the bigs 10 months before he would have been drafted had to gone to school. And again, he’s only 24. Maybe he never contributes anything, maybe he does. To call him AAAA at this point is patently ridiculous.

As someone who hasn't followed him much this year, what has been his problem?
by mr. maniac on Jun 27, 2025 10:58 PM EDT up reply actions
Taillon has allowed himself to get in trouble with big innings
when he gets in tight spots, he seems to get frustrated and simply tries to blow the ball past people. For a guy whose FB has topped out at 97-98 this year, that sounds like it should work. However, when he tries to muscle up (especially from the stretch) his mechanics break down a bit, his FB flattens out and he leaves it up. Maintaining a downward plane on his FB was something that the Pirates wanted to work on this year and he was doing a great job with it for the first 6 weeks of the season when he was as good as any pitcher in baseball not named Dylan Bundy. Since then, he will often toss 4-5 shutout innings and then have one inning where he allows 3 runs b/c he has let those innings snowball on him. As a Pirates fan, it’s been frustrating, but for a 20 year old kid, I’m willing to accept it as just something that he still needs to work on.

Mazara Russell
Jarmon Robertson
Triunfel Boyd
and late rounder Herschel “Boog” Powell is a player to watch on the A’s

Guzman: 1-4, BB, SO, Error(2)
So Guzman has two errors at 1B in two games? He’s just a kid, but that’s interesting. I’d heard good things about his progress there in instructs.

Both errors were on throws to third base.

Nice.
Hopefully he is (finally) turning the corner.

Still think he'll have to make the majors with his glove.
Not that he won’t do it, but I just don’t believe the bat will play in the majors right now.

Casey McElroy
He’s not a prospect, but he deserves a moment in the sun. Last week, he was promoted to Lake Elsinore after posting a 682 OPS over the first half in the Midwest League.
All he’s done in his first seven games is:
14-for-28, 3 2B, 3HR and a 500/576/929 line.
I believe that’s called being in the zone.
