thoughts on Betances' demotion

Pointless?

Never a strike thrower, but he’s gone off the rails completely in that regard this year, and I’m guessing he’s a mechanical disaster right now. Will being on Eastern League mounds instead of International League mounds change any of that? I don’t see how.

by LyreFire on Jun 30, 2025 1:07 PM EDT reply actions

what's gone wrong with him?

does anyone have any insights / theories?

by Yabu on Jun 30, 2025 1:21 PM EDT up reply actions

Hmm

He has always looked like a pretty good athlete to me but, all the rest sounds about right.

Yankees

Their AAA ballpark is being renovated, so they don’t have a home stadium. Essentially they are travelling between six different parks to play their “home” games. It’s one of the reasons why Bill Hall refused his AAA assignment. Pyschologically, all that travel messes with routine, and could make it harder for him to focus on his mechanics.
Not sure that its the reason but its a theory.

by TheClaymore on Jun 30, 2025 1:56 PM EDT up reply actions

that's a fun line and all

But your definition of “disaster” is entirely too broad if it describes both what he is this year and what he’s been in the past, because there is absolutely no comparing the two.

by LyreFire on Jun 30, 2025 6:30 PM EDT up reply actions

Really?

Because except for a single season, Bettances has pretty much always had control problems. What you’re seeing here might be something different or it might not. When a live arm can’t put the ball near the strike zone, eventually even minor leaguers are going to catch up and stop swinging at crap.

Fans are typically idiots.

Yankees can’t find pitching..they’re the anti A’s/Diamondbacks

by Rupert Pupkin on Jul 1, 2025 12:44 AM EDT up reply actions

It's standard fare

When a pitcher is making a significant mechanical change to have that done where the pitcher doesn’t have to worry about results, hence at a lower level. Even for hitters it’s the same. When a hitter makes significant changes teams try to do this in fall leagues, instructionals, etc. so that come the new season the hitter will be more comfortable when it is tested. Otherwise many hitters/pitchers when experiencing failure with their new approach tend to drop that approach. And totally revamping mechanics will bring failure before future success - thus moving to a lower level.

Alex Wood is supposed to go for Rome today

Intriguing power LHP, though it’s more likely he ends up in relief than starting. Looking to follow up on a good pro debut that saw him strikeout 4 in 2 IP while walking 0, though as a power LHP in A ball he should be able to overpower guys who haven’t seen many 94-96 MPH FBs from the left side.

I had a friend that attended his 1st start and he said Wood hit 97 several times. He was good again today going 3IP, 1H, 0R, 0ER, 0BB, 1K

Cole/Wheeler

If I pick Wheeler today there is a possibility that I can get back there tomorrow as Cole is going up against Wheeler’s team in Binghamton, which is the closest stop to me at just an hour away

by mattp31 on Jun 30, 2025 3:53 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

Oooh, that's tough...

I’d go with Wheeler, then Ventura…

by dbreer23 on Jun 30, 2025 3:47 PM EDT up reply actions

Picked Wheeler

Wheeler was tonight and didn’t want to wait until tomorrow. If Cole gets confirmed early enough I’ll head back there tomorrow. Debating seeing Heredia but he’s 2 hours away and the game starts at 6 PM on a Sunday night so it may not work for me.

Anyway here is what I saw

First inning he looked sharp with a pair of K’s. Gave up single and a walk in 2nd but defense helped him get out of it. Easy third and fourth. Then first three single in the fifth. Looked strong through four then fell apart. Not that impressed with the number of fly ball outs he gave up.

Reese Havens had a big game. Hard to tell he was struggling so badly this year from host just watching him tonight. Hit a homer.

Wilmer Flores did nothing at all tonight to impress me. In fact he looked more like the guy with the stat line of Havens. He played first tonight and he just looks like he belongs there instead of third.

Tim Alderson looked good as well but I don’t see him as more than a 4th starter and more likely a 5th starter.

Robbie Grossman didn’t have a big game but did a good job working the count and taking a pair of walks.

Oscar Tejeda gave me the impression that Boston gave up a bit too early. Wouldn’t do much in Boston but could be a 4th outfielder for Pittsburgh or a utility player like a Mark De Rosa.

another discussion question...

Anthony Gose v. Starling Marte v. Ryan Lavarnaway v. Brett Jackson v. Kolten Wong

which of these players do you see having the biggest impact in 3 years?

by gobruins12345 on Jun 30, 2025 9:27 PM EDT reply actions

I'd take Wong

He has the highest floor here IMO and I would rank them as follows:

1. Wong
2. Gose - probably the highest ceiling of these guys
3. Lavarnway - he really deserves to be getting a shot in the majors right now
4. Jackson
5. Marte

by sethbeno on Jun 30, 2025 9:34 PM EDT up reply actions

I think Lavarnway has the highest floor by a good margin

I would concur that Kolten Wong is a pretty safe bet to be a productive MLB-er of some kind assuming health though, yeah, & I’d rank him second.

by Matt0330 on Jul 2, 2025 10:01 AM EDT up reply actions

I have to go with Lavarnway

Wong is definitely second. Marte is alright, but has some big holes in his game that I don’t see getting fixed. Jackson… I’ve just never seen it. I don’t think he’s going to hit enough to make use of his power/speed combo, but the glove should be good. Gose obviously has immense tools, but the fact that he can’t even hit in Las Vegas has to be pretty damn worrisome, doesn’t it?

Lavarnway may never be better than an average defender behind the plate, but his bat far outweighs that to me, and reports over the last year or so have suggested that he’s improved enough to remain at C. He’s the total package offensively and I don’t know why he’s constantly overlooked.

Wong is a great prospect in his own right, and I expect him to be a very good regular at 2B for a long time. He squares the ball up, has some pop and speed and should have an above average glove. Obviously a very nice player, I just think that when you talk about having a big impact, he falls just short of what a guy like Lavarnway can offer.

by kyuss94 on Jun 30, 2025 9:40 PM EDT up reply actions

Gose

.289/.371/.422 is not hitting? Granted, it’s Vegas of course, but that’s a pretty damn good line otherwise.

by MjwW on Jun 30, 2025 9:43 PM EDT up reply actions

When you take into account the Vegas factor

That’s not hitting. Guys like Yan Gomes are doing better than that.

by kyuss94 on Jul 1, 2025 12:17 AM EDT up reply actions   1 recs

Nice try - that's not what you said above
but the fact that he can’t even hit in Las Vegas has to be pretty damn worrisome

You basically dinged him twice above - for not hitting, and not hitting in Vegas. He is hitting, though he’s doing to so in Vegas, and it’s fair to discount for that. So ding his line for doing so in Vegas, but what you said above was BS. He’s basically putting up a league average park adjusted line line (115 wRC+ per Fangraphs, though I’m pretty sure that their minor league numbers either aren’t properly park adjusted, or not at all, and 102 wOBA+ per statcorner, which does properly park adjust).

So he’s been basically an average hitter, and his contact rate has drastically improves in-season (Apr/May/June 72%/80%/80%, and this is statistically significant BTW, contact rate stabilizes quickly). If Gose were an average hitter overall, with plus defence in CF and plus baserunning/stealing, that’s a pretty valuable asset

by MjwW on Jul 1, 2025 12:55 PM EDT up reply actions

Alright

Sorry for not being enthused by a .793 OPS in what is probably the second most hitter-friendly environment in all of the minors outside of Lancaster. He’s putting up similar numbers to Adeiny Hecchevaria, plus some stolen bags. I like that he’s really improved his baserunning technique and improved his SB rate as he’s risen, but what kind of slash line do you really expect from him in the big leagues? I can’t buy anything much better than say, .260/.330/.400. That makes him pretty similar to Denard Span with a significantly worse contact rate, who is a fine player, don’t get me wrong, but when I’m choosing between that and an average defensive C who hits .280 with 25 homers.

by kyuss94 on Jul 1, 2025 5:44 PM EDT up reply actions

I’d be happy to get .260/330/.400 from him - that’s a league average line. Again, add plus defence and basestealing value, and that’s a very valuable player…we’re talking approaching 3.5-4 WAR in a full season. And I think in his best years he could exceed those offensive numbers.

As for the other players, I never took a position there cause frankly I don’t know enough about them in depth to make a position, and I’m not going to now. If you prefer Larvanaway, great - I never disagreed what that. All I’ll say is that in August, they’ll both have birthdays 3 days apart - also 3 years apart. And that’s a pretty significant gap

by MjwW on Jul 1, 2025 6:31 PM EDT up reply actions

How much upside do you think Lavarnway has?

I think he could be a .280/.350 guy with 20-25 HRs which would be really nice at C but his defense, while it might play, will never be good.

by sethbeno on Jun 30, 2025 9:50 PM EDT up reply actions

There are veeeery few guys who post those #s at C anymore

Will any catcher do that this season? I don’t think anyone is on pace to, at least.

by kyuss94 on Jul 1, 2025 12:16 AM EDT up reply actions

yeah

If his defense sucks, that might make him “only” a fringe All Star at catcher with that kind of production as opposed to being in contention to start the game every year (especially in Boston).

by mrkupe on Jul 1, 2025 12:18 AM EDT up reply actions

And his defense doesn't suck

From what I read, it’s considered about average right now. And with that kind of offensive production, he could be elite at the position.

by kyuss94 on Jul 1, 2025 12:19 AM EDT up reply actions

lavarnway?

ill go with lavarnway also…..but last on that list……his receiving skills are below avg and will not catch at the MLB level as a starter……..all the rest of the guys on this list are plus defenders…………..also jackson-marte-gose will steal 20 x bags a year and wong could steal 15………all are younger than lavarnway……..so other than ceiling-lower floor-defense and speed i guess lavarnway has more to offer………

by slapnutz on Jun 30, 2025 10:41 PM EDT up reply actions

After 3 starts?

Why do people like the idea of moving players up quickly? I just don’t understand it at all.

by auclairkeithbc on Jul 1, 2025 3:29 PM EDT up reply actions

He's advanced for the level.

He was a high 2010 pick and it’s showing. The biggest concern with him is injury/workload, which can be managed just as easily at Low-A. I don’t think he’s lucking his way into his stats thus far. Velasquez’s talent is most appropriate for Low-A. Limit his innings still obviously, but why not give him a bit of a challenge?

We are all Morban-itnesses.

by Ryne Alber on Jul 1, 2025 3:36 PM EDT up reply actions

I will disagree

He’s barely pitched as a pro. I don’t think there’s a need to be particularly aggressive here unless a spot really needs to be filled at a higher level or he gets a few more innings under his belt. He’s likely to start next year in the Sally anyway, so unless there’s a belief that he could justify a higher placement to start next year with a good run in Lexington I don’t really see the point just yet. If he continues to pitch well, maybe you send him up to get acclimated to the league and make a couple of starts at the end of the year.

Astros fans loved this guy back in 2010. Very young, projectable, great idea of how to pitch, but I don’t think his stuff was more than average-ish at the time. Any update on his stuff?

“He was really solid,” Nelson said. “Not only did he have quality stuff — fastball, curveball and straight change — but he had command of them all. I don’t know what he was like before [he was injured], but he was better than I had seen down in Florida while going through his rehab.” When he began his pro career in Greeneville in 2010, Velasquez’s fastball was settling consistently at 88-90 mph and topping out at 94-95. So far this year, he’s sitting at 90-92 and topping out at 96, though he admits adrenaline is a factor.

thanks

I was going to say, it sounded like his velocity had jumped a tick - but this post beat me to it!

His best attribute as a draft prospect was his polish for a prep arm. Will be interesting to see where his velocity goes . . .I’m guessing average or perhaps slightly above when projection and adrenaline settle down, but he doesn’t need a premium fastball for his game to work.

by mrkupe on Jul 1, 2025 4:14 PM EDT up reply actions

Think if this new velo sticks he has a chance to be a #2?

Upside, not likelihood of course.

We are all Morban-itnesses.

by Ryne Alber on Jul 1, 2025 4:29 PM EDT up reply actions

you know me, I use "frontline starter"

90-92 mph is still average, so I think he is still in that mid-rotation range . . .sounds like a guy who would be very interesting to see live though.

If his velocity were to continue to rise and he has strong secondaries (not just solid) to back it up then perhaps. There aren’t that many frontline starters though, and he wasn’t expected to be one coming out of HS.

by mrkupe on Jul 1, 2025 4:35 PM EDT up reply actions

91mph isn't even average any more

For a lefty it has ticked above this and for a RHP it’s close to 93. Of course that is for 4-seamers.

by pedrophile on Jul 1, 2025 7:48 PM EDT up reply actions

I think the two biggest question I have with him are:

1. Does he have room to project for more velocity?

2. Has he changed his mechanics/delivery to try to avoid future injury?

If both those answers are “yes,” he can become a VERY intriguing prospect for me.

We are all Morban-itnesses.

by Ryne Alber on Jul 2, 2025 12:49 AM EDT up reply actions

The third question would be

About his fastball command within the zone. If its decent or better then great. Otherwise that might affect future velocity in a negative way.

by pedrophile on Jul 2, 2025 1:09 AM EDT up reply actions

my personal belief

Promote on merit through the minors, but be exceptionally careful about promoting from short-season leagues to full-season leagues and (especially) from the minors to the majors. I tend to think that major league teams often make the mistake of doing the opposite.

Justin Nicolino

5IP | 7H | 4R/3ER | 1BB | 4K | 1HRA

Not his sharpest today, 76 pitches, 49 strikes. Struck out the side in last inning of work. 3rd inning was his undoing: started first batter 0-2, walked him on next 4 pitches, bunt single, Tyler Goeddel came up and was started 0-2, worked the count full, and hit a HR.

by MjwW on Jun 30, 2025 9:42 PM EDT reply actions

it's going to be very interesting to see where he ends up in everybody's estimation

Grade-wise that is. Numbers are obviously excellent but nobody seems especially enthused by his stuff. Numbers are better against RH batters, which backs the belief that his changeup is his best secondary . . .of course he compensates by walking nobody and inducing weak contact against lefties.

Very tough to evaluate this type of prospect . . .he sounds like a respectable arm but not much more, then you look at the numbers and you’re like, this guy’s gotta have frontline starter in him!

by mrkupe on Jul 1, 2025 4:07 PM EDT up reply actions

The biggest issue of course

Is that he’s doing really well as a lefty in the low minors. Obviously most people in the low minors haven’t seen a quality LHP with good stuff. I think he’ll move up with the squadron, and that might be for a taste at the end of the year.

I personally see a ceiling of a solid #2, with the likelyhood falling somewhere around a very low #2 to a slightly below average #3. If he did any better than a #2 I’d be very impressed because he’s not exactly elite in his pitches.

If I ran his career and Noah Syndergaard’s career against each other 1000 times, I think Nicolino would average as a #3 starter, and Syndergaard a #4 starter. Except Syndergaard might be an ace 100 of those times, and not make it past middle reliever in 400.

Which one would you guys rather have?

by kicker31 on Jul 1, 2025 5:05 PM EDT up reply actions

I like Nicolino

I think your likelihood is extremely rosy though. Danny Hultzen or Tyler Skaggs would be lucky to have that sort of outcome in my opinion. Very lucky.

by Matt0330 on Jul 2, 2025 10:04 AM EDT up reply actions

Second half with be instructive

Until very recently, he hasn’t been allowed to go very deep, and so rarely got beyond 1.5 times thru the line-up. Now that he has to, we’ll see.

The other key is the development of the curve…the change-up is advanced, the curve is a work in progress…it was rough last night, not spotting it at all, at other point this year it’s been a weapon…so it’s got potential, but not consistent either.

Stuff wise, it’s not knockout, but he kinds reminds me of a LHP Hutchison in a sense - not knockout stuff, but good movement on the FB, good pitchability. If the Jays let him, he could move quickly.

by MjwW on Jul 1, 2025 5:18 PM EDT up reply actions

I think that's a good way of thinking about him

There is certainly some room for him to add a little more velocity, but that can be said for lots of pitchers. I could see the Jays getting a respectable return from him very quickly if they’re so inclined, even if he doesn’t have great upside. There is a lot of value in such players.

by BigG'S on Jul 1, 2025 2:43 AM EDT via Android app up reply actions

I think you shop Headley

like they are, and if you don’t get many good offers, Amarista is the odd man out. I don’t see Gyorko’s bat being a problem at 3B though. Everyone is going to struggle for power in Petco. He’ll hit enough doubles and walk enough to still play well there. I could see a Youkilis 2007 type line from Gyorko at his prime of .280/.380/.450 with 16HR, but maybe even a few more HR.

by Woodland League on Jul 1, 2025 3:03 AM EDT up reply actions

I think you've got to see if Gyorko can handle 2nd. We could really use his bat there.

Trading Headley and sticking Gyorko out there puts too much pressure on him to produce immediately. Testing him out at 2nd gives us a chance to see his bat and still have the option of sending him back down if he struggles the rest of the season. The season is toast, we have very little to lose and much to gain if he can play 2nd.

He was a 48th round pick in the 2011 draft out of a RURAL HS in South Carolina. He signed with the rangers on the last day to sign. When he signed, he was in the upper 80s. Jackie Bradley Jr.

I’m starting to believe in Jackie Bradley Jr. as possibly a standout major league player, not just one who gets there. Just such a tremendously smart player who will impact the game by getting on … on defense … on the bases … and I think will with some power as well.

Bradley’s box line doesn’t look like much tonight (0-2, with two walks) but, he lead off the game with a walk, drilled a Betances pitch to the wall in center in the 6th just missing the go-ahead bomb and, in the 8th (Portland down 3-0) he fell behind 0-2 and came back to walk to load the bases a ta crucial spot in the game that Portaland rallied to win 4-3.

Boy did we miss the boat on this guy. Any South Carloina folks out there who knew how good he was? He touted as a possibe top ten pick before the 2011 season after all. Nobody much seemed to believe in his future before the season. It made me think the injuiries he had were more severe than they turned out to be and made me sceptical as well … out of sight out of mind I guess.

I did rank him at 49, before the season but, it’s hard to be too proud of that one. There appear to be a lot less than 48 players who have Bradley’s potential right now eh? . . .

49) Jackie Bradley Jr, Red Sox He is 22 today, the 19th. Here is a guy I just have a hunch on. He had a rough year but, after hearing a couple of interviews of him this spring it reminded me of one of the things a lot of people liked – his makeup. He has solid all around skills but, I think he has an understanding of hitting, his limitations and, making the pitcher work. I think even if his tools are less than some of the other centerfield prospects (which they aren’t, they are pretty solid) he will be smarter. I think of his skills as sort of like Gary Brown with the bat but, more instinctive in the outfield. He also isn’t as fast as Brown but, he may have the best batting eye of all these CF’s.

Very advanced hitter, great contact ability. That said, not enough power to be an elite prospect, imo. I think right around 40 is probably a good slot for him, but I’d have to think about it.

Don't want to be a Debbie Downer on a guy that seemingly everyone loves, but

He crushed A+ ball as a 22 year-old college hitter who only dropped in the draft due to injury concerns. I think his defensive potential in center is outstanding, and his patience in A+ was a really encouraging sign.

I will wait and see on him for more than 40 PA in an age-appropriate league for him before I put him in my top-50. While it is a SSS, his stellar walk-rate has plummeted nearly 10% and his K-rate has nearly doubled, both signs that he was too-advanced for A+ ball. A great prospect, but still in the 50-75 range for me. /ducks head for the firestorm of hatred from everyone/

It's ok

I hear some of what you are saying, I guess. I would say it was his .359 .480 .529 line at Salem was his sign he was too good for that league and, his .350 .447 .500 line in 10 games in the EL is the sign that he would have had a great season if he started the season there. Of course he wouldn’t have had as good of a season though, it’s a big jump.

Also calling him a great prospect and, saying there are 49-74 better ones, waters down the meaning of the word "great’, I think. To each thier own.

ERA now at 5.00. What happened to the guy who struck out 208 in 151.1 IP with a 3.63 ERA and a 1.24 WHIP last year?

He's a pretty inconsistent pitcher

And probably always will be. I still expect him to be a reliever in the end.

wouldnt be that focused on the seemingly benign line; still so young for the level, I’m loving the GO/FO ratio from this game and expecting the K’s to follow

by BigG'S on Jul 1, 2025 2:30 AM EDT via Android app up reply actions

Sounds like he changed something.

Was kind of a flyball guy with strikeouts, now he’s a ground ball guy with some control issues. Working on his sinker / two-seamer maybe? Last two starts have had 3:1 and 11:1 ground out to air out ratios. Below 1:1 before that.

At the game

and he looked more impressive then his line shows. Throwing 94-97 and mixing in a 71-74 curve. His fastball was flying by most batters the first time through the order. Obviously got the timing down their second time around. His control was fair as he left several pitches short of the plate. Overall, I was impressed with what I saw but he needs a third pitch and some work on his control. I can see tremendous improvement from this draft scouting videos.

Why such a slow curve?

I would think that would have an early break making it easier for advanced hitters to layoff. Typically we only see very advanced pitchers, like Greinke, succeed with slow curve balls.

Struggling.

Nothing major. Just has to adjust. Had a just terrible April and has been making up for it ever since. May and June are better, but still not back to where he should be. Some BABIP related luck problems, some is him.

Seems like lately there's been a

limiting of the discussion of top 2012 HS OF to Buxton, Dahl and Almora, but Hawkins is right in the mix. Very athletic and some of the best raw power in the class. I was really glad for the Sox’ sake that they took a guy with his potential.

There's a fair amount of bust risk.

But you’ve got to love the potential.

really needed a game like this, too

.250/.302/.300 thus far for Hawkins, 2/11 BB/K with 40 ABs.

On the other side of things, 19 year old Keon Barnum has gotten off to a solid start on the same team. 8 for 19, no walks with 3 strikeouts, 3 home runs.

If the Sox wanted project players, at least they went with project players with very real raw power.

My Report on Williamsport Crosscutters

Saw the Williamsport team last night and the two guys that stood out are Walding and Quinn. Walding has a great stroke at the plate and I talked to a contact at the game and said his swing reminded him of Nolan Arenado the Rockies future 3rd baseman. The same contact said Walding put up an absolute show in BP. He has a very smooth swing and did not looked overmatched at all. Roman Quinn, he is very very fast, stole 2nd base standing up as he didn’t even need to slide. His errors weren’t entirely his fault, the first one was poor footwork and the 2nd error should have been on the 1st baseman as he missed the ball. I don’t know how much pop Quinn will ever have, he looks to be 5’7 140 soaking wet. Larry Greene, very mediocre, looks poor in the outfield with below average range and a below average arm to boot. At the plate, it looked like he has maybe average bat speed, it’s well below Walding’s, and he struggled with offspeed stuff. His speed down the line is probably a 30 to 40 runner at best and I think he should be at 1st. Tyler Greene, bad attitude and over match quite a bit at the plate, and disregard the two hits he had, they were short little bloop hits. Tyler Greene looks like a guy who may not make it out of A-Ball.

The teams are the ones that take care of that

So if he’s this good the Rockies would give him one of their visas. Ben Badler said he was at Instructs so I guess he has his papers in order. It could be the Rockies don’t have a complex team and don’t want to send him to a higher rookie league.

They can just give somebody a visa?

This makes me so happy that MLB decided not to expand with the Memphis Mujahideen.

Danry Vasquez

3-4, 2B

Really struggled in the Midwest League this year, but was the youngest player in the league and second youngest to Roughned Odor in all of Low-A. Since then, he was demoted to the NYPL where he’s STILL the youngest player in the league, and is smacking around the ball to a tune of .378/.962 with an 8.2 BB% and and 18.4 K%. John had this to say about him preseason:

Young and toolsy, Tigers praise his bat but he could not control strike zone in rookie ball. Young enough to learn, stock will rise fast if he does so.

He was rated as the GCL’s 10th best prospect last year and surprisingly the 8th best Tigers prospect by Kevin Goldstein. What are your thoughts on him?

We are all Morban-itnesses.
