Got my eyes on

Brickhouse, Crick/Fulmer, and Hultzen as my 3 most notable games to watch.

Color me excited for the Royals 2011 class. Starling (obviously) but I really like Cam Gallagher who is currently in the APPY league, as well as Brickhouse and Kyle Smith.

I'm curious for Castro

Anytime you see Dylan Axelrod spot-starting in the majors, you have to take note of who’s available at the next level. Now that Andre Rienzo has returned from his suspension and appears just as dominant as he was to begin the season, the White Sox have a few stealthy pitching prospects worth tracking. As for Castro, I hope the International League treats him better than the PCL has. His numvers in the Southern League suggest that his control is as good as ever and he’s been pretty dependable for 6 to 8 innings every time out.

by Revilo on Jun 23, 2025 12:46 PM EDT up reply actions

the entire draft class was filled with high school kids with upside

i like Jack Lopez and Christian Binford. Lopez is a slick defender with a more advanced bat than previously thought, and Binford is a 6-foot-7 RHP that has upped his velocity into the low-90’s since being drafted.

Noah Syndergaard Splits

Noah Syndergaard’s Splits:
“Reliever”: 7 GP, 7.29 ERA, 1.82 GO/AO, 12.42 K/9, 4.71 BB/9
“Starter”: 7 GS, 0.79 ERA, 2.91 GO/AO, 11.12 K/9, 1.59 BB/9

When Syndergaard is the second guy pitching, he throws a heck of a lot worse than he does as a starter. This is over 7 games at each slot. Hopefully he just continues putting up the “starter” numbers from here on out.

Astros

Have done as well in the draft as anyone could have asked.

by ADLC on Jun 23, 2025 8:21 PM EDT up reply actions

not too surprising

Figured Ruiz was going to get done, even if it took a good chunk of money (and perhaps more than was originally anticipated).

I’m not sure how much that leaves for one of Hunter Virant or Mitchell Traver . . .numbers?

by mrkupe on Jun 23, 2025 8:26 PM EDT up reply actions

I think I saw approximately $900K to go over slot with

If they are willing to go into the 5% tax range. Not sure how accurate that is.

If so that would mean a maximum of $1M for Virant assuming all the college guys sign for slot money. Maybe a bit more if guys like Fontana sign under slot.

Will Virant sign for $1M? I kind of doubt it, guess we’ll find out.

http://www.crawfishboxes.com

by OremLK on Jun 23, 2025 10:03 PM EDT up reply actions

yeah, that's tough to see

The obvious question would be: if he was willing to go that low, why wasn’t he drafted earlier? Virant for $1 million would seem very doable, especially with Ty Buttrey getting $1 million+ from the Red Sox. At that figure, he’d be taking a lot less than he was rumored to be seeking. If he signs, I’ll be genuinely surprised in a “what was he thinking in the first place?” way.

On the bright side for the Astros, the currently-on-the-shelf Mitchell Traver would be very wise to take the money if Virant doesn’t want it. Traver’s problem shouldn’t be a chronic one, and if it turns out that it was responsible for his erratic spring, he could be an impressive add to the system. BIG body with nice velocity.

by mrkupe on Jun 23, 2025 10:13 PM EDT up reply actions

There's also CJ Hinojosa

I like all three, and I think there’s a chance the Astros get one of them. Not sure if I’d go as high as 50/50.

http://www.crawfishboxes.com

by OremLK on Jun 24, 2025 1:51 AM EDT up reply actions

maybe, maybe not

He’s worked in the low 90s in the past . . .it is reasonable to expect his fastball to be back in that range following a successful surgery.

I’m skeptical that Hinojosa can be had for $1 million. That’s supplemental round money, and I don’t think he’s going to have a problem going that high in three years. If he makes it to school, he’s immediately one of the best prospects in the 2015 class.

by mrkupe on Jun 24, 2025 6:56 AM EDT up reply actions

Isn't Hinojosa the one who said it would take Lindor money to sign him?

I don’t think there’s any chance he signs. I think Traver is the best bet, but I think he feels he can improve his stock at TCU. I’d be surprised if they sign any of the 3.

Not looking so good

I wasn’t at the game but, he struggled some tonight, facing probably one of the toughest lineups he has ever faced (Chad Tracy, Brandon Wood, Tim Wheelee, Matt McBride, Andrew Brown) in a stadium he has never pitched in before.

I’m not making excuses for him but, it was just a bad night and, like you said, it didn’t appear that he was hit too hard. He had trouble finding the plate though - 81 pitches, 41 for strikies, in 3 innings…

Just saw the replay

He really didn’t have much going well especially for a guy with better than average command. Yes some were bloops but you are not including Matt McBride’s long foul which was originally ruled a 3 run HR. Left a lot of pitches up so even average contact were falling for hits. Let’s give him a mulligan.

Only 9 pitches in the AS Game, before that, he was pulled before 90 pitches. Considering things, I’m not concerned about this start.

The club has not replaced him on the roster with top prospect Trevor Bauer, who’s presently dominating at Triple-A Reno. Instead, they’ve recalled right-handed reliever Jonathan Albaladejo. It’s not certain who will replace Saunders in the rotation, although Josh Collmenter, who started in place of Saunders on Friday, would seem to be the likely stop-gap.

finally?

He should’ve spent all of last year in AAA anyway just as a consolidation season. I don’t think it’s coincidence that he’s getting regular at bats just as his production starts to demand that he gets them.

by mrkupe on Jun 23, 2025 10:15 PM EDT up reply actions

it's a yes

Just saying that I disagree with the “finally” part . . .for the most part I think the Giants have handled him the way that teams should handle most of their young prospects. Promote as merited through the minors, promote to the majors with hesitation.

by mrkupe on Jun 23, 2025 10:21 PM EDT up reply actions

I don't think anyone would argue about his promotions

It was the seemingly arbitrary usage this year that bugged more followers. He was playing maybe 2x a week for a while, and I think most of us believed he would have been better served back at AAA than sitting on the bench. The fact that he was losing ABs to Pill, Huff and random utility guys didn’t make much sense.

by ADLC on Jun 23, 2025 10:27 PM EDT up reply actions

So you agree with the way they handled him, but you also said he should have been in AAA last year.

My whole point is that if you’re going bring a guy up, let him play, don’t Dom Brown him. I agree that he should have spent the year in AAA if they weren’t going to play him, and might as well have had him down there this year, too, if he’s only going to play randomly. Which is my whole point.

by High and Inside on Jun 23, 2025 10:31 PM EDT up reply actions

right

Note that I said “for the most part”. I don’t think he should have been up last year as anything other than a last-resort injury callup or a September callup. I’m fine with breaking a guy in slowly during his rookie year. You can put him out there in favorable situations, let him get adjusted to the competition and build confidence. It’s not dissimilar from putting a rookie pitcher in the pen, a tactic that I’m a fan of and which I believe doesn’t get used nearly as much as it should.

by mrkupe on Jun 23, 2025 10:43 PM EDT up reply actions

Bochy is so painfully fickle.

He said Belt was the starter going into the season only to yank him after three starts. He then said Belt would recieve regular playing time two more times only to send him back to a utility role. Perhaps the most perplexing thing is that he said he was trying to save him from having to hit against lefties despite the fact he’s hit .100 higher against lefties than righties.

I’m of the belief that starting a young player twice a week hinders development and I can’t imagine it helps someone get into a groove and prove they belong in the line up.

On the bright side, Belt seems to be making this a non-issue. Hopefully Bochy will get his team leading OBP out of the 7th spot in the order soon (not to mention his best hitter, Sandoval, out of the 6th spot).

First year in a while playing on CBS Sports site and it is horrific as far as projected starters, news and ease of use. Other sites are also easy to customize and find stats but CBS is not. They also have not addressed issues from the start of the year and its close to 1/2 through the season. Per Rotoworld

According to Paul Sullivan of the Chicago Tribune, “speculation is” Anthony Rizzo will be promoted Tuesday.
Rizzo is batting .355/.416/.722 with 23 home runs and 62 RBI in 67 games this season at the Triple-A level. He struggled mightily in a short look with the Padres last year, but the 22-year-old first baseman is worth stashing in most mixed fantasy leagues. He won’t be called up to ride the bench; the Cubs are going to play him.

Why do i feel like we have heard this before?

Jenrry Mejia

0.1IP 3H 4R 3ER 1BB 0K with 1 HRA. Has arguably been more effective when starting this year. Not sure the Mets should be counting on much help from him this year in either role.

by charles wallace on Jun 23, 2025 11:17 PM EDT reply actions

Agreed.

From what I’ve heard on him post-surgery he has been smoother and more consistent with his delivery. His three to four average-or-better pitches can play in a MLB rotation long term. The only thing skeptics seem to have to knock on him is size, when he’s still bigger than guys such as Pedro Martinez and Johnny Cueto. It’s truly baffling why the Mets are going through this whole relief thing again.

by Ambient on Jun 24, 2025 11:20 AM EDT up reply actions

Because the Mets are idiots.

It’s really not that hard to figure out. They are poorly run and consistently make bad decisions. For a team usually capable of a large payroll (minus the Ponzi scheme money loss), they consistently underachieve.

does an ability to walk at a high clip in the complexes translate up the ladder? not that 3 games necessarily says anything conclusive about Gallo’s walk rate

I suppose it translates about as well as anything does in the complex leagues

Although nothing really translates that well from the complex leagues. I guess it stands to reason that walks might end up being the exception.

by sethbeno on Jun 24, 2025 2:07 AM EDT up reply actions

Dude, you made the mistake, not me

Look in the mirror, take a deep breath, it’s going to be okay.

But let’s be serious, the RHB HR PF for Lancaster is 139 and that is for a HR friendly league, you realize how much that inflates that HR number of Springer’s that gives you the erection, right? Would you still be pimping him up if he had 8 HR in the FSL and boasting that number, and his almighty stolen bases.

Also you are really bad at math, Lancaster has already played half it’s games, how is he projected to hit 35 HR when he only has 14 now?

by bigboy1234 on Jun 24, 2025 3:58 AM EDT up reply actions

I'm not great at math, but not bad at simple math like this

just prorating his numbers over 162 games. And if you do that it comes out close to 35/40 which is extremely impressive regardless of the league.

by sethbeno on Jun 24, 2025 2:19 PM EDT up reply actions

But they don't play 162 games in the minors

Everyone’s counting numbers are going to look better if you prorate them out to 162 games. If you do that then Rizzo is on pace for 56 HR.

If Chris Young was ever healthy

lol

..not even beingh snarky, I like Springer quite a bit.

That made me laugh though. Chris Young is usually healthy, from what i know. I also would love to make the comp to Young, hjowever, I think that is Springer’s reasonable upside as a major leaguer and, that is all I talk about when it comes to the hazy (around here) concept of upside.

Granderson may be a stretch. Let’s see if Springer can put up a line of .303 /.407 /.515 in his age 23 season at AA (like Granderson did) next year. Maybe he can, i don’t know. that would be nice, for ’Stros fans huh?

right

Granderson is also a better ballplauyer than Chris Young also, not that I hagve a clear idea of how good George Soringher will be at thisn time but, my instincts tell me that he will have his work cut out for him just to be as good of a hitter as Young is.
There are many players who destroyed Cal League pitching, at a younger age, who didn’t become solid everyday big leaguers. I’m not saying hje can’t do it though.
