Wouldn't it be funny if Story really were motivated by the 'doubters'?

I could see him working out Max Cady style (think Scorsese version) just absolutely consumed by the message board ramblings of strangers. Well, technically I couldn’t see it but it’s kind of funny.

by SteveHoffmanSlowey on Jul 1, 2025 8:42 PM EDT up reply actions

Frenchy really needs to go.

He is just horrible and has been hitting 5th for us all year. We should just give him away but idk if anyone wants him.

Myers is absolutely crushing. It is unreal. I am assuming they are waiting until after the all-star break to bring Myers up.

Can’t wait for Myers and Cain to be in the outfield instead of Frenchy and the trash we put in center.

by vic1124 on Jul 1, 2025 8:47 PM EDT up reply actions

From what I have read

The Royals have been back and forth whether Frenchy is available, on a weekly basis. This makes no sense to me, if they are out of it then have Myers up. And if they are in the chase then have Myers up. I guess he makes some really funny jokes in the clubhouse.

by pedrophile on Jul 1, 2025 9:00 PM EDT up reply actions

Personally

I would say he plays in the Futures Game and then stays in KC (since the game is there). I hope he hits one out in the Futures Game and proves his point. Who cares what they are paying Francouer, or how much beer he buys for everybody. He can do that on the bench…

by noelman31 on Jul 1, 2025 10:00 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree

Frenchy is the heart and soul of that team. I’m not even sure the other 8 guys would be able to take the field if they traded him.

by pedrophile on Jul 1, 2025 11:04 PM EDT up reply actions

Thanks. For me, I didn't expect this much power though

IMO he is just the type of player the Royals need

Hosmer and Butler are fantastic players in their own right but that park does hamper them, for Myers it will make little difference. He can hit them out of any park.

Skaggs

7IP, 12H, 5ER, 1BB, 3K

I watched most of this game intermittently and he looked better than the line indicates. A few IF hits. One of those ER was a misplaced fly ball in CF by Eaton. He had given up 3ER (including that Eaton misplay) through 7, but they rolled him back out there and he let the first two guys reach. Jabasomthinsomthin let them score.

His FB looked good, looked like the 4S. His CB was good and he commanded it pretty well. Seem to get ahead of a lot of guys. Had trouble putting them away. I didn’t see any CU.

Yeah but….baseball is funny: he was so close to a 7IP, 10H, 2ER, 0BB, 3K line. If Eaton doesn’t misplay that fly ball and if he doesn’t go back out there for the 8th, let 2 men on, and Jaba let’s them come in. 2 what ifs, but there’re not that crazy. Then we’d all point out that he’s still 20 and did an pretty great job against at tough 51’s line up. Just something to chew on.

75 pitches, 41 strikes. Goes without saying, but struggled with control in the first two innings, including a 37 pitch 3rd in which he walked 3 and struck out the side. Was better in the third, got the first two batters and struck out 2 sandwiched around a 0-2 HBP on a curveball. The curveball was decent, getting a number of swings and misses and spotted for a few called strikes

+ the way Ben Revere has played this season …..Revere’s D > than Spans…. and Revere’s speed.
Span’s Arm and Leadoff ability (ability to work counts/ take Pitches ) > than Reveres.

I love seeing Revere do well

Hits .300 where ever he goes! Glad to see him producing.

by Woodland League on Jul 1, 2025 8:55 PM EDT up reply actions

Except it's about as hollow of a .300 as you can get.

He doesn’t walk and has no power at all. Even with a slash line of .320/.339/.376, his OPS plus is 98. He hits over .300, but his OBP is within a few points of his average. He needs improve his walk rate or if he doesn’t hit .300 each year he will have no value at all.

by Looney4baseball on Jul 2, 2025 9:14 AM EDT up reply actions

true, right now it is

but he’s only 24 and in his first full time gig in MLB. So I’m going to give him some time. His K% is a ridiculous 6%, but his walk rate is low. I suspect both will go back to their norm and he’ll be more around .310/.365/.370. Hollow as you say, but the walks are better in the long run since he’s a SB guy. Doubles and triples will be key for him - at least he plays in a good home park for that I believe.

by Woodland League on Jul 2, 2025 9:25 AM EDT up reply actions

Yeah

he’s not great, but his value plays up by being one of the fastest players in the league. He’s going to hit a ton of bases and he has exceptional value defensively by getting to nearly everything hit his way.

by Zeitgeister on Jul 2, 2025 11:39 AM EDT up reply actions

yeah he's not a great fantasy baseball option

But in real life, he’s a very good starting OF…. IMO - IF he Picks up his BB% rate…..which i’m optimistic he’ll be able to do while he’s hitting so many line drives and racking up the hits…..Pitchers will start to change it up more on him, and i think he’ll have the eye a bit prepared to take more walks.

We’ll see i’m anxious to see how the next few months play out.

But you’re right if he’s not walking a lot more, he’s a very empty .300

Higher K's than Verlander and Strasburg when they were in the minors...

except by the time Verlander was 23 and Strasburg was 22 they were both already in the majors. By the way, Strasburg put up a 12.17/K9 at age 22 in the majors, but you are right that he didn’t do it in the minors.

Will be be a consensus top 12 prospect with the midseason rankings? I know that a couple of places had him in the 40’s - 50’s preseason, so I don’t know how high he will jump with them. But, BP and Sickels seem like locks to have him in the 10-15 range, at least.

I agree he’s a very interesting and polarizing prospect, I just think that every possible thing that could be said about him so far has been said, so to keep distracting myself and others from hearing about other exciting young guys out there (like the guys I’VE been annoying about this season), everyone gets wrapped up in these same old discussions. I have no problem with people being passionate about their prospect lovers and would definitely be reminding everyone if I was ever really right about someone like you are with Taveras, but like I said, I just think enough is enough. I think we all can agree that we all respect your opinions, knowledge, and insight. We’d all just appreciate it if your opinions, knowledge, and insight about Oscar Taveras were moved to a different location :)

the best number of all

Number of Oscar Taveras hits in MLB: 0

It’s a little early to say somebody is “right” or “wrong”. If Taveras ends up sucking as a major league player, does that suddenly mean casejud is “retroactively wrong” and a bunch of other people are “retroactively right”?

Yes it does

I don't exactly talk about how "right" I am

. . specifically. I really don’t need stroking of my ego quite that much, in that way at least :) I mostly talk about how silly it was for OTHERS to rank him 95th, 75th, 86th and the like, bnefore the season. I am telling you now that I am going to be right abouit that.

Even you Kupe, in all your reasonableness, can’t you agree with me just once that that is “retroactively” or whatever, like, a bit bizarre? Even if he doesn’t have a knock in the big leagues yet.

There can’t possibly be 75 guys better than that amazing player. That is essentially what I was saying, the vast majority of the time. I put him 8th before the year. I don’t consider most 8th ranked guys to be virtual lock to be superstars. I just thoughjt it was obvious that he was one of the better young hitters in the minor leagues, which he is… right?

"The worst things that you say sound better than the best things that some other people say" - Hannah Horvath

by casejud on Jul 2, 2025 2:29 AM EDT up reply actions

Well, I consider him "right" for one main reason:

Being a fantasy player, prospect rankings hold the key to your success, as enough top prospects can net you huge returns. So, in essence, what I’m saying is that when making a top prospect list, the goal (at least for me) shouldn’t be to rank them as educated guesses on who will have the better career, but rather who will rank higher after NEXT season. Case was right about Taveras because Taveras is now a top-15 consensus prospect as opposed to simply being a consensus top-100 prospect (both of those numbers are low, just wanted to be safe). Now, if you followed Case’s list as your bible, you either would’ve drafted Taveras or acquired him somehow, via trade, free agent, whatever. So now you have an extremely valuable trade chip that might just turn out to be an okay major leaguer as well. Guessing someone’s MLB career is a crapshoot (at least when you are splitting hairs between two top prospects like Taveras and Myers). Baseball America is the best in the biz, and just look at their past top-100 lists. Yet, these are the lists that people go off of when deciding players’ value. If you are able to predict accurately who will be tops on those lists a year prior to coming out, you’re “right” in my book. I know others may feel differently.

We are all Morban-itnesses.

by Ryne Alber on Jul 2, 2025 2:38 AM EDT up reply actions

yep

In my position, I need to be able to predict the future and, I can’t always wait for all the evidence to come in.

I have two fanatsy teams and, Oscar is on one of them. He probably wouldn’t be If I had drafted him in the the next draft.

by casejud on Jul 2, 2025 2:42 AM EDT up reply actions

sure, it's a success

It’s nice that a given player is doing well, as that hints that he is getting closer to that lofty future you’re projecting. It’s like winning the opening skirmish in a 5 year war, though - you really need to keep these things in perspective.

And yes, I know for fantasy purposes these things kind of go haywire, especially when you consider the huge number of fantasy baseball players on this site. Fantasy baseball valuations are a totally different animal from “real life valuations” for many reasons.

Alfaro played in short-season ball at the age of 17 and, played pretty damned wel considering. Perhaps we could see more than 10 games from Oscar Hernandez stateside before we start talking about who is good or, not? The "Original Legend’ Alfaro is having a nice season in the SAL and, is only one month older than Oscar Hernandez.

I realize that you guys aren’t into fantasy as much so I’ll ask this as more of a prospect question:

I was offered a trade (I give Brad Lincoln and Liam Hendriks, get Neil Ramirez and Grant Balfour).

I need to know what’s up with Neil Ramirez. I know he had an awful year in Round Rock to start the season, and he was demoted to AA. What were his issues? And does anyone have an updated report on him?

it looks like this must be a very deep mixed league……i dont know where you are in the standings - the setup ( categorys) ill assume its 5×5 or if ur going for it or rebuilding……but the 2 guys that have some upside are ramirez and lincoln……it would have been a no-brainer till ramirez fell off the cliff……..that said if u can stash him and not hurt your team id do the deal and hope ramirez rebounds next year

I’d pull the trigger, its not a sexy deal by any means but Ramirez still does have the most upside in the deal. Maybe is Balfour gets moved to a contender it will help if its a “holds” league.

Nothing very impressive or noteworthy at the plate.

He is also very fast, probably a 65. Defensively, a play he made in the first (?) inning was among the best I have ever seen. Hard groundball to the middle, so he ranges to his left and manages to snag it outstretch but still on his feet. With his momentum heading that way, he did an athletic twirl and without even really looking, threw a perfect dart to 1B. The runner was fast, but he managed to throw him out.

Among a few other great plays, a Stone Crab’s batter absolutely hammered a baseball right at him (there were a lot of hard hit balls in the 8-0 games for the Stone Crabs) on a tough low hop. He expertly scooped it with ease and threw the batter out.

Based on what I saw, he is MLB ready defensively and he easily (hate to throw that out there but it is true) has a chance to be the best defensive SS in baseball soon. Great range, hands, instincts, and arm.

by mr. maniac on Jul 2, 2025 1:50 AM EDT up reply actions

Good report....

I saw him at State College (I believe two years ago, though it could have been last year) and came away thinking pretty much the same thing: his defense is particularly nasty. Just looks like a MLB SS whose defense comes pretty easy and naturally.

The bat is a ?, though I have seen him square balls up before and drive them. Probably a UTIL guy in the Majors, but his defense is something to see.

Kvetching about his strikeout rate

ignores the fact that he’s been assigned to SS ball when most guys his age would be pitching in one of the latin summer leagues or, if advanced, the complex leagues. He’s not only stateside, he’s pitching in a league where the most advanced HS kids and many college players are assigned out of the draft. Even putting that aside, he’s posting a ~20% strikeout rate, which is plenty good. He’s pitched at least six innings in each start and has allowed just one earned run in three of the four. Talk about nit-picking…

The youngest guy in any league you can think of. The 16 year-old SS is more than holding his own in the Pioneer league with a .340 average and surprising pop as well as a stellar walk rate against guys that are 2-4 years older than him. He signed for a big bonus last year to the surprise of many, but now Kansas City is the one who looks smart. He’s one of the few International signees from last year that projects to stick at short. If he can keep up this offensive production against older competition, Kansas City (and fantasy owners) could be in for a real treat.

Dorssys Paulino

2-4

Another less hyped signing last July 2nd, Paulino doesn’t have the defensive chops Mondesi has to stick at short. However, he’s one of my favorite offensive players from last year and is KILLING the Arizona League to the tune of .359 thus far. I like hit a lot more at second than third because he doesn’t project to have more than above-average power, but he’s definitely someone to watch, as he’s also one of the youngest in the league (2 days younger than Gallo).

We are all Morban-itnesses.

I expect him up in a couple days.

With his start tonight (and the rotational issues) it made sense to bring up Johnson for the first few games of the Seattle series to bolster the pen, but when they need a starter at the end of the week I have to think it’s going to be Britton.

After an uninspiring April, he really has hit the cover off the ball in May and June.

I know it’s the PCL, but with Iowa being his home park the splits aren’t quite as massive.

the PCL is a very different place in the eastern parks

It’s when you get out west and start looking at Tucson, Albuquerque, Colorado Springs, Salt Lake City, Las Vegas that things get ugly.

Out of curiosity

what’s the word on Reno? I think it was 340 down the lines with a 25 foot wall. I thought that was pretty beastly. But then the two HR off Skaggs yesterday carried like crazy. So maybe they cancel each other? Or can no deep fence or mammoth wall contain that thin air?

Reno park factors. Really good HR park for lefties. Overall, hitters park in a hitter’s league
