FWIW, Starling Marte's last 10 games.......
.457/.490/.870
Over 49 PA’s, he has 21 Hits (3 2B, 2 3B, 4 HR), 3 BB/8 Ks.
On year: .291/.349/.497, 35/89 Hits are XBHs, w/ 16 2B, 10(!) 3B, 9 HRs. His ISO is ~.210. His BB/K is 21/69.
If dude isn’t ready, he’s pretty close. I’d prefer a couple more weeks (ideally a month) but, considering Tabata just got demoted to AAA, I think he comes up right after the All-star break.
Defense is obviously exceptional from all reports, including a hose for an arm. His SB efficiency isn’t really good and doesn’t do justice to his plus-plus speed. That needs to improve, but realistically, that improvement (if it comes) will come over the offseason (w/ instruction) I presume.
Should be a fun dude to follow, even for non-Bucs fans.

As a bucs fan
I am super excited to see his progress, but he does have things to work on, and as hot as the MLB team is hitting right now I prefer to keep things as is. That said, he will definitely benefit from a call-up, as he can talk/observe a guy like McCutchen on the basepaths, as well as Presely, on how to use his speed properly and get his best jumps. I imagine a long adjustment period at the plate, but I am excited about his future.

No offense
But your username gives me the chills. Being a frequent traveler and loyal United customer, I absolutely despise Jeff Smisek.
Oh, and that Marte kid is pretty darn good. I’d say his arrival in Pittsburgh is coming very soon.

Buxton pressing?
0-4 3 K
Came into the game with a 3/3 BB/K. Average now at .037.
Correa isn’t exactly setting the world on fire either at .167, but he at least has 5 doubles (out of 8 hits).
Probably just a blip on the stat line, but a reminder of how tough the transition to pro ball can be, even for elite talent.

Chipper Jones
hit .229/.321/.271 in 44 GCL games upon being drafted number one overall. .304/.402/.531 in 18 years in the big leagues, of course. Something similar for Jeter and lots of other guys. Small sample size, first time away from home, wood bats, etc., etc., etc.

Ben Kline Rays 32nd rd pick was an interesting selection out of an NAIA school
while quite old for the league (23) he has started 13-21 (.619) with 4 2B…interesting guy 6’3 SS with good speed and good defense from reports out of college but lost his bat along the way after leaving Nebraska.

Live in SD, enjoying the game
Bauer got hosed on a check swing by Grandal, he ended up with a hit and then Alonso took him deep. Bauer was really pounding the zone in the first, but his command left him in the second. Cashner just made Young look bad.

He should be ready to go after the ASB, although that’s no guarantee with him, or that he’ll be able to stay healthy after that.

Gibson recently said Bauer would remain in the rotation for the rest of the season. They might have to change the plan if Bauer doesn’t get it going in the next few starts.

Done with that line
53 pitches, 34 strikes. Definitely good to see him with a little more command, particularly coming back from the injury. Let’s see if he can sustain it over a longer start.
by AndrewMcQ on Jul 3, 2025 9:12 PM EDT up reply actions
Perhaps more encouraging, from Chris Harris' Twitter (Jackson Generals Manager of Media Relations)
Paxton’s velocity was 90-92 when he went on the DL with the knee in May. His velocity tonight has been 93-95 so far tonight.
Another 1-2-3 inning for James Paxton in the 4th. Topped out at 97 MPH that inning. Picked up his 2nd strikeout as well. Been impressive.

Noah Syndergaard
5IP | 3H | 1R/0R | 0BB | 6K
82 pitches, 52 strikes. Was really, really good for the first 4 innings, needing only 51 pitches, 35 strikes to get 4K, 5 ground balls and 3 popups against only one fly ball and one line drive. Command was not as good in the 5th, starting with 2 balls to the first two batters, and then running the count full to the third batter after getting ahead 0-2. Need 31 pitches to get through the inning, though without a booted ball would only have been 17.
Overall, really good start though. In addition to the 6K, kept the ball on the ground - 8 ground balls, 3 popups, 2 line drives, 1 fly ball. Fastball was 93-94 in first n South bend gun, nothing else other 96-97 on two consecutive pitches in the 3rd

Don't look now...
but did you notice Springer only struck out 22 times in 110 June PAs? And he walked 21. Ended up with a .314/.455/.547 line for the month, though I’m much more impressed by the improved approach.
And yeah, with six hits and 2 HR already in July, he doesn’t look ready to slow down yet.
by PissedMick on Jul 4, 2025 12:44 AM EDT up reply actions
I've noticed
The power, speed and walks are pretty much a given and no matter how many of each he racks up the focus will always be on how often he’s striking out. He peaked at around 28-29% earlier in the year and after cutting down over the past month is now down to 25%. I’m sure he hasn’t suddenly solved all of his contact issues but it’s certainly nice to see that he has improved a little lately and is hitting for a high AVG.
by sethbeno on Jul 4, 2025 1:14 AM EDT up reply actions
I should say
the focus will be how much he’s striking out as he moves through the minors.
by sethbeno on Jul 4, 2025 1:15 AM EDT up reply actions
I'm impressed more by the power ...
Often when players change their approach they lose aggressiveness and power. And that’s when they go back to their old approach. I love that he kept the aggressiveness to go with the plate discipline. This makes me think it’s here to stay.

by sethbeno on Jul 4, 2025 12:42 PM EDT up reply actions
The thing that sold me on Springer pre-draft
I think I had him 5th or 6th on my board—was that he made massive strides in his contact rate from his previous year in college. That plus all the reports of his fantastic makeup made me think this is a guy who knows how to make adjustments. I really don’t think he is going to be a 30+ percent strikeout rate, sub-.250 hitter in the majors. He’s not going to bat .300 but I would not be surprised at all if he hit .270.
