Be sure to

Seek out all the guys with radar guns and talk to them to get their opinion

Well usually

Those with radar guns are scouts. So maybe seek out some team colors here lol

by kicker31 on Jul 2, 2025 1:53 PM EDT up reply actions

Just out of curiosity, how do you approach a scout?

I’ve tried it before, but not to the success I had hoped. Any tips?

by mr. maniac on Jul 2, 2025 8:09 PM EDT up reply actions

approach

i played in the royals system for 2 years now im old and play fantasy baseball i go to alot of minor league games i live in harrisburg where the nationals have their AA team i always sit right in back of the screen this is where u find the scouts also the player pitching the next day and the pitcher the day after will be charting pitches while the other handles the radar gun this is what ive found while playing and now make the questions brief…..know what u want to ask…..1 question 2 tops and than thank them for there time fans are always all over them and they are wary of us lol

by slapnutz on Jul 2, 2025 10:53 PM EDT up reply actions

I’ve found their extremely easy to talk to once you show that you want to be respectful of their time. Ask an insightful question but nothing overly in depth or simplistic…something as simple as whether or not a player can stay at a position….

Sounds awesome (from a Bucs fan), mattp31.....

I wonder if the first IP will be dicey after he got hit in the face last game. Should be interesting to follow….

Would also be interested in your thoughts on Robbie Grossman, who has been on fire lately. Other than those two (and maybe Matt Curry), Altoona doesn’t have many dudes that are future impact players (w/ Cole being the only “sure thing”, if there is such a thing). Brock Holt has had a good year number-wise (and I’ve always like him more than most) but it seems the Bucs see him as more of a UTIL guy, if that. I definitely see that as the more likely outcome, but the dude has hit pretty much everywhere he’s been. And, despite Alen Hanson’s big time year, there isn’t much talent at the position in the minors.

In any event, I rambled. I look forward to your report.

Cozens wasn’t ranked by BA in its top 500, even though he was all-america as DH and set his school’s HR record. I don’t think a questionable incident with a coach should have influenced his ranking that much, Phils were smart to take him early.

But I’m still feeling better about the Astros organization than I have in a long time. Jose Altuve looks like the real deal, Jason Castro seems to be getting back to where it was hoped he would be a year ago, and the farm is really shaping up with a number of prospects having good years and an excellent draft class.

Also have at least one nice trade chip in Jed Lowrie, and maybe more depending how you feel about guys like Wandy, Myers, and Lee, so the farm could be looking even better over the next year.

Wilson, a lefty with outstanding stuff, has been pretty impressive this season (and not just for his part in the combined no-hitter). There were some (myself included) who wanted to see him in the bullpen this year after he was able to get his fastball up to 99 out of the pen last season and it seemed to help with his control problems. His numbers on the season now include a 3.34 ERA and 9.1 K/9. He’s still walking 4 batters per 9 and in outings where he struggles, it’s his control that is the problem. Still, he’s really getting fun to watch and since Kevin Correia…well…sucks, it wouldn’t surprise me if Wilson starts a few games for the Bucs down the stretch.

*Starling Marte is 3-6 now in the never ending Indy-Louisville game, bringing him up to .291 with an .844 OPS. Nice to see him adjusting to AAA pitching.

by KentuckyPirate on Jul 2, 2025 10:57 PM EDT reply actions

Wilson's improvement (if legitimate) is very exciting

I still see him as a Sanchez (Royals)-type pitcher who frustrates the hell out of the team he is on w/ command and control. But, the fact that he changed to throwing from a higher arm slot 5 games ago may imply legitimate improvement. It would be huge if he could become a #3/#4 w/ games like a #2 and games like a #5.

by charles wallace on Jul 3, 2025 1:47 PM EDT up reply actions

The standard is that that's why I think.

Is there some reason that opinions are no longer allowed on these chats? Jesus Christ.

by brirob on Jul 3, 2025 2:34 PM EDT up reply actions

... And the "standard for designation",

as if we have a basis for everything that is said in the chats, is his k-rate over the last two years. You should be happy that someone one this site isn’t just regurgitating what they’ve read on ten different message boards and blogs, and actually has an opinion of their own. And to your point - yes, there are guys with more K’s right now. If you take a cross-sectional account at any point in time, you may think player A is better than player B. Doesn’t mean it’s true.

by brirob on Jul 3, 2025 2:40 PM EDT up reply actions

by charles wallace on Jul 3, 2025 5:28 PM EDT up reply actions

Wait, what?

You posed an opionion as fact, then got irritated when asked for clarification even while acknowledging said opinion probably wouldn’t be mainstream? And then put the burden of proof on the questioner, asking him to prove cabrera ISN’T the best K pitcher in the minors.

therein lies the prob

as John alluded to, the bat doesn’t play up as a 1b so I guess he’s working on his defense in hopes of getting a real shot at the bigs in 2014 (vs a cup of coffee this year)

by BigG'S on Jul 3, 2025 1:18 AM EDT via Android app up reply actions

Yeah, he better keep plugging away at 3b

I haven’t seen many clips of him this year but I think range is more the issue than his glove per se. If he’s serviceable (or even slightly subpar) there, I think he can produce adequate offensive lines to profile as a regular 3b. The organizational chart isn’t intimidating in front of him (assuming he stays at 3b of course).

by Matt0330 on Jul 3, 2025 11:08 AM EDT up reply actions

I seem to remember Ryan Wheeler doing well at AAA

You know how his defense is? I’m a bit surprised they didn’t give Josh Bell more of a shot, jerking him around btw starts (or just trying to push Roberts), but I guess with his 72% contact rate there’s not much of a leash

by BigG'S on Jul 3, 2025 11:15 AM EDT via Android app up reply actions

Have heard both

Wheeler has been regognized at a couple stops as ‘best defensive 3b’ or whatever, but it seems like there’s question about his defensive abilities here & there too. He’s reasonably new to the position & saying all the right things (knows 1b is occupied so this is his window) & I don’t think it’s unreasonable to think he could be decent. I’m not sure if he profiles as much more than a lower division guy or a platoon bat though in an ideal situation but he can hit righties, has some sneaky punch & can fill in around the foul lines with ease too probably.

Anda HBP and sac bunt

Pushes his line to .264/.351/.456, 6HR, 18 2B, 7 3B, 26/53 BB/K

Hasn’t exactly been a great season for him, but there’s still another 2 months and a 807 OPS in the FSL is decent in and of itself

I hope you're right

I’ve felt he might be a little overrated though. Is his ceiling really all that lofty?

So what does Toronto do with Marisnick?

Trade Rasmus at peak value, and give him CF next season?

by CoolCat23 on Jul 3, 2025 2:59 PM EDT up reply actions

Toronto

Also has Gose for CF and he’s two levels above Jake. Plus Jake is two to three years away. Plenty of time for this to sort itself out. He could also be traded for pitching help.

by 96mnc on Jul 3, 2025 3:49 PM EDT via Android app up reply actions

Well, he's in High-A this year

I can’t see the Jays rushing him, especially after they rushed Snider from High-A to the bigs in one season and look how that turned out. I imagine AA next year, and then there’s still the matter of Gose in front of him. I think mid-2014 at the earliest, unless he really beats the door down

by MjwW on Jul 3, 2025 3:51 PM EDT up reply actions

Marisnick is like at least two years away so there is nothing to worry about. Nothing to worry with Gose either. His bat isn’t ready and will likely need another year of minor league seasoning.

Doubt its even a consideration for the Jays FO. AA really wanted rasmus and fans sure love him now

by Sniderlover on Jul 3, 2025 5:37 PM EDT up reply actions

I'm a Cards fan

and I was outraged when they basically gave Rasmus away for free. Sadly, a lot of fans use the WS victory as justification for the move. Maybe Colby, Tony Rasmus and the Cardinals couldn’t coexist but they should have recieved a hell of a lot more in return. It was a slick move for AA.

by 96mnc on Jul 5, 2025 2:57 PM EDT via Android app up reply actions

I wouldn’t be upset over the trade. You won the WS and even if you could have had those guys without giving up Rasmus, you guys still won so you definitely make the deal again. Jays have no reason not to make that deal either so win-win for both sides IMO

by Sniderlover on Jul 4, 2025 5:23 PM EDT up reply actions

slowly faded away after a hot start....but

his overall line is around what i thought it would be. statistically he doesnt seem to be unlucky, .308 babip, 17% ld rate. he was off to a hot start, but if you look back at the scouting reports on him his bat didn’t project more than avg-above avg. and a .267/.351/.379 isn’t a bad line for a guy in full season ball who doesn’t turn 19 till nov, especially when you take into account that he’s good defensively at ss.

Not minors, but Sean Doolittle...

The ridiculous numbers have carried over into the bigs. 21:2 over 12.2 innings so far…that’s almost 2 K per inning with Cliff Lee-type control. What a story.

by ArbeeEye on Jul 3, 2025 2:25 AM EDT reply actions

Doolittle

In his career as a pitcher, he has a 71:9 K:BB in 38.2 IP. I think we can call the experiment a success at this point.

by PissedMick on Jul 3, 2025 2:39 AM EDT up reply actions

He's been one of the best relievers in all of MLB this year.

Albeit in a SSS. Gotta think he’s the A’s best reliever though. Cook has been good but has struggled in the closer’s role. Would love to see Doolittle get a chance at the job if Cook’s struggles continue. Has Kimbrel-like upside IMO. His fastball looks unstoppable right now.

We are all Morban-itnesses.

by Ryne Alber on Jul 3, 2025 2:42 AM EDT up reply actions

Cook hasnt struggled really...

he blew one save, and then cam in with the bases loaded in the 8th inning vs Texas and gave up a triple. other than that hes been great

Way too many hits given up with that type of k/bb

And from watching him I don’t think it’s all unlucky BABIP either, he throw a lot of fastballs.

I mean I just haven't seen much of a quality breaking/offspeed pitch

And that’s a concern even for a reliever.

slurve

Threw a couple last night. The one he got over was nasty, but he missed with the others I saw (didn’t see whole appearance). If he can develop the pitch, he’ll be ridiculous.

by smokypants on Jul 3, 2025 11:35 AM EDT up reply actions

Reminds me of Kenley Jansen

Jansen’s another converted position player who throws almost exclusively fastballs—94% this year to Doolittle’s 85%. Kenley only averages 92-93 with his fastball, while Doolittle’s at 94 so far.

The funny thing is, Kenley is next to impossible to hit. His .138 BAA is eighth among all relievers. Chapman and Frieri are even better than that, while throwing as many (Frieri) or more (Chapman) than Doolitlte.

Point being, it’s not the FB% alone that has made Doolittle hittable. His microscopic walk rate suggests he’s just putting it over the plate too much. If he can get finer with his command (which isn’t asking too much, since he’s pitched so little as a professional it’s laughable) or even just adds some effective wildness to his game, he’ll be even better, whether he improves his secondaries or not.

Jansen

Is exactly who he reminds me of as well. He does throw a straight change but it had little movement. However, it does have 10+ mph of separation from his fastball.

he doesnt have a plus breaking ball

he needs to trust / work on his slider more. Then he becomes elite, but could be great next year once he gets some experience in.
