Colorado Rockies Organization Discussion
I am now working on the Chicago White Sox "prospect" list. The next team up is the Colorado Rockies, to be followed by the New York Yankees, San Francisco Giants, Cleveland Indians, Chicago Cubs, Cincinnati Reds, and Oakland Athletics to finish the process.
Use this thread to discuss the Rockies farm system. As always, point out sleepers or overlooked players that you like. 2011 was a disappointing season for the big league squad, but the Ubaldo Jimenez trade with the Cleveland Indians brought in a pair of high-ceiling arms with Drew Pomeranz and Alex White. The team hasn't had a lot of success drafting pitchers lately, although the Cleveland pair will help. Chad Bettis from the 2010 draft and Tyler Anderson from the 2011 draft also look solid. If you were the Rockies, is there anything you would do differently in regards to developing pitchers?
On the hitting side, Nolan Arenado is (in my opinion) poised for a massive breakout in 2012. It thins out quickly after him, although Tim Wheeler and possibly Wilin Rosario will be up soon. What would you be looking at in the '12 draft?

The Rockies system
up and down enjoyed quite a nice season. There were a few disasters, like Matzek and Tago, but a significant number of players enjoyed nice breakout seasons. They have built decent depth at most positions and most levels. Their weakest point right now is middle infield. Story was a good pick in the draft last year, but has a long way to go. Rutledge had a massive 2nd half breakout, but he really stands alone as far as middle infielders close to reaching the majors.
Thankfully their inability to draft stable pitchers has been negated by the Latin arms they have signed.

Anyone
have a good answer to when Drew Pomeranz will be up full-time? Out of spring training? AAA?
Also I know John always says Arenado going to break out next year, but didn’t he sort of do that this year? I feel like if he just continues what he did in high-A he will be in great shape.

My opinion
He will be in the majors out of spring training. I’m basing this mostly on the fact that he is really the only lefty option they have for the rotation right now.

Arenado
if he does what he did in A+ in AA/AAA in 2012 he will definitely be “breaking out” the added degree of difficulty from A+ to AA/AAA will make all the difference. Tack that onto his performance in AZ and his stock is trending upwards fast.

Rockies pitchers tend to get overlooked because of the organization emphasis towards pitching to contact and garnering groundballs. That said, there’s some quality arms in the system
Albert Campos had a disappointing Asheville season before it ended due to injury, but many of his peripherals suggest he was unlucky and/or a victim of Asheville’s hitting-friendly environment.
Josh Slaats had a fairly dominant second half to the season.
Edwar Cabrera tends to get overlooked despite the fact he led the minors in strikeouts.
Joseph Gardner is the overlooked third piece of the Ubaldo trade, and his heavy groundball approach is a great fit for the org.
Jayson Aquino is the next stud young arm to come over from the Dominican.
Rob Scahill is likely a future bullpen piece, but had a good season as a starter and was solid in the AFL.
Aside from the obvious choices like Bettis, Anderson, and Pomeranz, these guys are all probably worth checking out.
Some days, I feel like I’ve accidentally entered the Church of Tulowitzki on Baseball Easter.

Umm, John, did I miss the Cubs? Or is their system so bad you’re going to ignore it? :)

Most depth the system has ever had
There is more talent and depth in the Rockies’ system than ever before. Is it all high-end? No. Will all players fully develop? Of course not. However, with the volume of talent, the odds go way up that the club will find workable pieces or trade chips.
There is power, there is hitting for average, there is pitching promise and all this is at the higher and lower ends of the minors.
The Rockies’ system, in my study, at least gets a solid B rating, with the potential for it to get better.
Everyone knows about Nolan Arenado and many have heard of Chad Bettis, who I think is being undervalued, but there is a lot more than just those two. Most evaluators have been trumpeting Wilin Rosario as one of the better prospects in baseball and for his immense power potential I don’t see him as being better than Arenado, Bettis or Josh Rutledge right now and there are others who have the potential to be better.
This system is why GM Dan O’Dowd is not being more aggressive (with budgetary concerns being second) in giving up big money to free agents (Michael Cuddyer not withstanding) and making high-impact trades. He’s patient and trusting in his player development.

Tim Wheeler
Everyone seems sure about Arenado, but what I want to see is another solid year out of Tim Wheeler. He had not really done much until AA where he put up ridiculous numbers, so it’d be nice to see him repeat that in AAA. Although Col Springs isn’t the best place to evaluate talent.
by Nick95 on Dec 28, 2025 5:04 PM EST reply actions
They are putting a humidor in the Springs
which should aid pitching development and deflate some of the hitters’ numbers.
There are no apostrophes in plurals.
A lot is two words. Allot can be one word but it has another meaning.
The only time you really want to use "myself" is when you are the recipient of your own action. Usually you're better off using "me."
Your is not the correct contraction of you are. The word you're looking for is you're.
It's anyway, not anyways.
But if you only remember one thing...

The Rockies are definitely a top ten, twelve system, but...
..to say this is their best ever is a stretch. In 2007, they had arguably the best system in the game.
I’m not a Pomeranz fan, and the fact a bottom third organization like Cleveland was so willing to trade him for a quick fix is questionable.
The acquisitions of Kevin Slowey and Tyler Chatwood pretty much seals Pomeranz’ fate of making the team out of spring training, which isn’t a bad thing.
Arenado is legit, the reports of him being a question mark are not valid, at least from what I saw in the AFL. His footwork is fine, which is the starting point from any position, especially third base.
Offensively, his bat is legit, unlike some other top, overhyped prospects. He had 55 XBH playing in a pitcher’s league and a virtual 1-1 BB/K rate, which is almost unheard of, especially in a 20 year old.
The Rockies unnecessarily rushed Ian Stewart and basically cost themselves a good player, so my guess is they will proceed with caution on Arenado, despite his AFL showing.
The fact Casey Blake only got a year on his deal proves that.
I can see the Rockies trading Blake at the deadline and Arenado starting after August first.
Wilin Rosario is in the same boat as Arenado, although as a catcher he has a better seat.
He doesn’t have the same bat, but with only a temporary free agent signing ahead of him, I can see Hernandez being moved with Rosario being the full timer during the second half.
I like Chad Bettis, not sure if he projects as a starter or closer, but with Rex Brothers taking over for Huston Street, the Rockies will give him every opportunity to develop a change up and remain in the rotation.
I like Tim Wheeler as well, I think he’s better than Seth Smith right now. All Wheeler needs is experience and some reps against lefthanders. He has good hip action, although he has a tendency to rely on his hands too much, but that’s a confidence thing more than a mechanical thing, so no real worries with that.
I’m not a buyer on Kyle Parker..there’s a big difference between a football player who plays baseball over a baseball player who plays football.
When I think of a football player playing baseball I don’t think Bo Jackson, I think Deion Sanders, or even Brian Jordan. Jordan was a pretty good baseball player, but he accomplished more in four years in the NFL than he did in his baseball career.
I’m not sure of his status any more, but a guy I really like is Charlie Blackmon. The acquisitions of Cuddyer and Colvin will relegate him to AAA duty, but he’s a capable fourth OF and could easily be an everyday player with the right team.
To me, the issue with Matzek is more the Rockies trying to change him than anything else. If you look at his season, the Rox shut him down for a month and sent him to Arizona to re-learn his original delivery. Over his last nine starts he had two where he walked fifteen batters, but only walked 35 total.
If you look deep into his numbers you’ll see nothing really changed from the time he signed, he was just trying to force some changes that didn’t work, and as a credit to the organization they let him go back to what he was natural to him.
A sleeper guy to watch is catcher Bryce Massanari.
Massanari was the Rockies 30th rounder in ‘09 from Georgia. He was a Sally League All-Star playing in Asheville and was the Rockies’ organization catcher of the year, ahead of Rosario.
Another guy is lefty Christian Friedrich.
He’s really struggled the last year or so and a lot of guys have written him off, but I can’t, the stuff is there, as is the body and delivery.
With all the issues surrounding Matzek and Friedrich, Pomeranz is deserving of his ranking as the top pitcher in the system…today.
But as a scout I can’t honestly say his ceiling is the highest of the three.
by Kelsdad on Dec 28, 2025 5:46 PM EST reply actions
I'd love to hear your reasoning
on Pomeranz. Also, the excuse of Matzek is total BS. The changes weren’t that major. I think it has more to do with his immaturity.

Agreed
Pomeranz over Chatwood pretty easy decision to me.

And I disagree that Jordan accomplished more in four NFL years, than he did in his MLB career
by cookiedabookie on Dec 28, 2025 9:59 PM EST up reply actions
Agree
Brian Jordan was a mid/late rounder in the NFL Draft who hooked on with the Falcons after being released by Buffalo. I was young but I remember him being a pretty good safety (particularly against the run - sort of a Will Demps,Ken Hamlin type) but I think the St. Louis Cardinals knew what kind of a baseball player he could be (1st rounder in that sport) & paid him accordingly in order for Jordan to concentrate on baseball. Also, he didn’t play 4 years in the NFL - only 3 (& just 2 as a starter).
One could hold the belief that Jordan would have been a better football player than baseball player, but to say that he accomplished more from 1990-91 on the football field than he did in his baseball career borders on ridiculous & minimizes the very good career he had.

I was under the impression
that the Cal League was a heavy hitter’s league…possibly the heaviest. And that is where Nolan spent his entire year. Not to knock him, but I don’t think its a pitcher’s league.

it's not the heaviest
The Cal has some places that are VERY hitter-friendly, but also a few places that are actually very on the low side of offensive production. One of the latter parks is Modesto.

Is anyone able to
actually give a more detailed explanation of what he did? I know he got hit by a come backer and that he broke a vertebrae, which one? How severely? Just a crack? Surgery?
This is more just my curiosity than trying to figure out when he will be back.
http://heatedshot.wordpress.com/
by HeLeftYouBagEnd on Dec 29, 2025 10:50 AM EST up reply actions
The fracture was at C1
Which is the vertebrae that connects the spinal cord to the brain stem. He is EXTREMELY lucky to be alive, much less not paralyzed. It is unknown whether the fracture occurred when he was hit, or when his head hit the ground. We’ll see what he does when/if he is able to come back. The reports I’ve read in the Denver Post have been encouraging, but I’d imagine it will be much different when he faces live hitters again.
by Prospector on Dec 29, 2025 11:08 AM EST up reply actions
I believe the vertebrae was completely broken
but he had no damage to The spine, which is pretty miraculous. if he were to have an acute physical issue with range of motion or his delivery, we would know now. Its doubtful things will show up later, but It’s possible. really, the biggest hurdle left is mental, both in pitching to live hitters at all, and pitching after the next comebacker. he’s quite the bull though, so I wouldn’t be a bit shocked if he pitches in the OD rotation with no problems

Hit by a line drive, spun around and fell head first into the mound, the top of his head hitting first.
He had surgery to reattach fragments of his C-1 vertebrae. They inserted two screws and a small plate in his neck.
Troy Renck tweeted yesterday that Nicasio (and Pomeranz) are his projected rotation coming out of ST.

Ha
Yeah I am hoping he isn’t broken eternally, I slapped a two year on him in my dyno league! It does sound like it was very close to bad, but at the same time it sounds like he should be back to normal. But I’m no expert…
