Anthony Garcia

Some buzz on him from the Cardinal prospect folk, your outlook?

by Miguel Mejia on Jan 18, 2026 10:03 AM EST reply actions

garcia

Not a ton of buzz, I had to poke around to find out something about him. Good numbers at Johnson City, 18th round pick out of Puerto Rico in 2009, now 20 years old. Former catcher now an outfielder. I think he’s a sleeper to watch definitely. Transition to Midwest League should be illuminating

Big SS sticks ... or at least relatively so

John, are there any sleeper or under-the-rader SS prospects out there who could be plus offensively and still stick at SS in the majors?

by jedjethro on Jan 18, 2026 10:03 AM EST reply actions

well

Well if the guy can hit and handle shortstop, he’s already a good prospect and people have heard of him. It is hard to find a sleeper shortstop prospect. They don’t stay under the radar long.

You might consider Brian Dozier in Minnesota. He is a solid hitter and while many people assume he’ll move over to 2B, I think he can handle SS for awhile.

Eddie Rosario

How does Rosario’s move to 2B affect his grade at this time? I’m not sure whether it has been factored in, or perhaps it’s too early to factor it in.

by rlwhite on Jan 18, 2026 10:04 AM EST reply actions

rosario

I thought he was a Grade B even as an outfielder. I’m agnostic about this move to 2B and I’m not sure I like the idea. I don’t want to mess up a bat like that. Ultimately it didn’t change his grade for me. Let’s see how he adjusts.

Have read reports the last couple days that AA and the jays brass is very high on pitching prospect drew Hutchison, saying they see a possible ace and that they expect him to contribute to the big club this year. What is his ceiling and stuff projection in your opinion? Thanks John!

I see him as a number three starter.

Oscar Hernandez

Now that the season is over and you’ve done your research, what can you tell us about the young Rays slugging catcher? What’s his ceiling?

by mattp31 on Jan 18, 2026 10:07 AM EST via iPhone app reply actions

I can tell you

He was an average power hitter for his league away from the little league park he played his home games in. So I wouldn’t call him a slugger. He benefited from a crazy home park HR/FB ratio (66.7%!!!!!). The whole team hit (and pitcher gave up) about 4X as many HR at home as away. You have to completely discount his home stats…COMPLETELY. His away stats suggest he is an interesting very low chance to succeed type of player…good contact hitter, good patience…very very very unlikely to make to the MLB. Ceiling is something that can’t even be discussed really. It is like asking about the ceiling of some unknown kid from some middle school that put up really good numbers.

by auclairkeithbc on Jan 18, 2026 11:03 AM EST up reply actions

Yeah I have to endorse what auclair is saying here

It is way, way too soon to know if OH is even a strong prospect or not. His stats down there are distorted too much by the home park.

by John Sickels on Jan 18, 2026 11:44 AM EST up reply actions

Oscar's team hit .277/.364/.415

…and O.H. batted .402/.503/.732, in his age-17 season, by the by. It’s now a tiny, six team league, but Hernandez did post an OPS five hundred points above his peers. (With solid BB/K/AB ratios, and while catching. Pretty darn amazing.)

by Mekonsrock on Jan 18, 2026 2:48 PM EST up reply actions

yea I think there is a line between, he is only inflated by his park and he is the next babe ruth

but no one knows where that is, once people see him in the spring and in his first season in the states this year we will have a much clearer idea.

by Dbullsfan on Jan 18, 2026 3:34 PM EST up reply actions

John gave him a C+ though.

Jacob Turner

Basic question is what do you see from him during his peak years…ERA/WHIP/K #’s, and any quick thoughts on a comparison? Thanks! Great work as usual!

by TwinkiesFan on Jan 18, 2026 10:08 AM EST reply actions

turner

I don’t think Turner is going to be a genuine ace but he should develop into a solid starter with better-than-league ERAs.

What exact ERA, WHIPS and stuff are, no way to know since we don’t know what kind of context he will be pitching in at his peak. But I would say “better-than-league but not superb”, whatever that means at his peak. Say ERA+ around 115 with a good innings count.

Not John

But I would suspect this will be a rough norm of what he should be able to do…not necessarily right away in 2012, but I think it is quite possible. I’m not sure his peak will be ALL that much higher either, but there is more potential in his bat that just .290 with 20 HR.

Did last season’s performance sour you on him at all or was the problem simply that he was just rushed to the bigs?

by deltarich on Jan 18, 2026 10:12 AM EST reply actions

well

If you wrote what I said about Drabek last year, I wrote that I liked his long-term potential but was concerned that his command issues were being underplayed and he could struggle if rushed.

well

i heard he will probably start off in low-A.

I predict he’ll start off in Low-A and destroy the Sally League for two months, hitting .324/.405/.570 in 42 games. He’ll move up to the California League, hit .330/.397/.525 in 64 games, then be promoted to Double-A and hit .234/.300/.425 in 29 games with mediocre plate discipline, leading to worries from Astros fans.

How would you fix this one time promising prospect (or am I just not being patient enough)?

by horst_04 on Jan 18, 2026 10:17 AM EST reply actions

Hicks

well he’s still young enough to improve but I’m getting down on him. But if it doesn’t happen within the next two years, I’d start thinking about him as a pitcher. He’s got a great arm.

by John Sickels on Jan 18, 2026 12:06 PM EST up reply actions

I think my first course of action would be to

have Hicks abandon switch-hitting and go full time from the right side. He’s hit .051 higher and slugged .134 higher as a RHB, and I’d give him the opportunity to see if he could hit RHP better from the right side than he has from the left side before I made the more drastic conversion to him pitching.

Some people have been making a case to me that he’s underrated as a B- and is more of a B. That’s plausible.

Vince Belnome

Does he deserve more than a C+? I read the blurb in the Padres top 20 - did you get any reports from scouts on his fielding? What don’t scouts like about his tools?

by delmonfan on Jan 18, 2026 10:27 AM EST reply actions

belnome

My Texas League sources were pretty “blah” about him.

by John Sickels on Jan 18, 2026 12:17 PM EST up reply actions

here is what I wrote in the book

Vince Belnome was one of the most dangerous hitters in Double-A last year, posting
a 39 percent OPS in the Texas League. Alas, he was limited to 75 games by an
abdominal strain, missing most of July and August, but he raked when healthy. He
posted a .979 OPS in his pitching-friendly home park, 1.104 OPS on the road. He
drew walks, didn’t strike out that much, and was hot all year. The main issue
sabermetrically is a strong platoon split: he hit .267/.394/.372 against lefties,
.365/.451/.713 against right-handers. Despite his glorious statistics, Belnome doesn’t
get buzz as a prospect. He was a 28th round pick (2009, West Virginia), and scouts
don’t like his physical tools. His defensive statistics at second base were actually
quite good last year, with a low error rate and strong range factor, but he doesn’t
have the build or athleticism normally associated with middle infielders. I like his
swing and plate discipline and I suspect he’ll keep hitting, but finding a place for him
on the roster may be an issue. His profile is similar to Vince Catricala in the
Mariners system, although Catricala gets more press and better reviews for his bat.
Belnome might be "just" a platoon role player in the future, but I wouldn’t
underestimate him. Grade C.

by John Sickels on Jan 18, 2026 12:24 PM EST up reply actions

More of a prospect philosophy question for John

What would you rather have - 10 C+ prospects or 3 B- prospects, or what is the quantity vs. quality ratio for you John, when looking at the value of a minor league system?

by cookiedabookie on Jan 18, 2026 10:30 AM EST reply actions

well it kind of depends

Are you talking about Grade C+ guys at the lower levels, or Grade C+ guys in Triple-A?

Overall I’d probably take the 10 C+ guys over the 3 B-.

by John Sickels on Jan 18, 2026 12:24 PM EST up reply actions

So how many B- players would you take over 10 C+ players?

I know this is a second question, but you or anyone could answer. Would you take 5 B- players over 10 C+ players? And I assume that the C+ players are a mix of high floor low ceiling AAA players, and younger low-level players.

by cookiedabookie on Jan 18, 2026 3:24 PM EST up reply actions

I don't think there's a consistent answer.

I think this is an interesting question, but it does not have a good answer. All these B- players are different, as are the C+’s. So, depending on the players, you could get a bunch of different answers.

Somebody applied Victor Wang’s value of prospects to John’s grades last year. If you want to crunch out some type of numerical answer for this, that seems like a good format to use.

What’s his ceiling?

I love Mahtook and felt he was one of the steals of the draft.

Kind of guy who could hit .280-.290 with 20 homers, 20 steals early in his career.

There are some oddly mixed opinions about him. I have one trusted source who RAVES about his tools. Others say his tools are just a tick above-average.

should say 3-4 potential ave or above pitches.
the fb plays up in college because of the command but will never be more than MLB ave because the velo and lack of crazy movement.
The slider is decent and he commands it, but its not an mlb out pitch.
Same for the change.
The cutter is new and developing.
Basically he’s a guy that sees everything play up a bump in college because he can actually command everything, but in the MLB the lack of velo and nasty movement will be an issue when the command is off.
I can see the following on a MLB 20-80
FB- 50
SL- 55
CH- 55
CU- 50.
2 pitches mlb ave, 2 slightly better

Everyone of those guys has the “overall ceiling” of a number one starter. Beyond that I don’t know how to define it without getting impossibly and misleadingly granular. . .“this guy will have a peak ERA+ of 152 and this guy will be 151”.

If you want to know how i RANK them currently, I would go Bauer, Walker, Cole, Bundy, Bradley, Hultzen, Jenkins, Heredia.

Kyle Weiland

What are your predictions for this year with the Astros? And career?

by lawson3 on Jan 18, 2026 10:46 AM EST via mobile reply actions

Kyle Weiland got knocked around during his major league trial last year, but he had
a successful campaign in Triple-A, and deserves more major league chances. He
works with a 90-95 MPH fastball, a slider, a curveball, and a changeup, the classic
four-pitch arsenal. None of his pitches are excellent, but when his command is on
he’s effective, or at least that was the case in the minors. His strikeout rate dropped
sharply in the majors, as big-league hitters weren’t as easily fooled as International
League competition. Some scouts see Weiland as a Quadruple-A pitcher, too good
for the minors but not quite good enough for the majors. Others think he can be a
fifth starter or a useful bullpen option, and that’s how I see him. He was traded from
Boston to Houston in December. Grade C+.

Michael Choice

When might we see Choice up and how will he fare against more advanced pitchers in the higher minors (mainly how might his k rate affect his performance)?

by mikel1218 on Jan 18, 2026 10:46 AM EST reply actions

choice

should begin this year in Double-A. Major league ETA 2013 I would say.

It is a good question about the k-rate and the main worry about Choice going forward. He’s shown some pure hitting skills at times and isn’t just a one-dimensional guy.

However, Chris Carter occasionally showed some good pure hitting skills, too…I saw this in person…and hasn’t been able to carry it forward yet. Choice is a better athlete and has a better chance to pull it off, but his transition to AA is something we will watch very closely.

Um...well all those guys have some pretty high stock.

I don’t see any of them reaching the majors in 2012. MAYBE thornburg.

Salcedo could see his stock go up considerably. He kind of gets left out of the conversation sometimes. Nicolino, Sampson, Syndergaard, and Biddle are a cut above the other guys. For them to improve, they would be moving into the Grade A range

by John Sickels on Jan 18, 2026 1:08 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah not only does Salcedo have an incredible walk rate, he gives up no Home-Runs either.

I mean none, and he’s only going to be pitching in the FSL next year, so it’d be hard to imagine him giving up 5+ dingers all year long there.

Also heard from source, he is consistantly 89-92 touching 93 at times, that sounds like a bit more velo than most typical Twins pitchers. All things considered his age, his repitoire, and his High Ground Ball rates as well I can live with a dropping K rate.

I think his stock could really improve after 2012.

Player development

This may be more appropriate for a blog entry, but which organizations would you say were the best and worst at player development on either side of the ball? And how much does this affect your projections, if at all? (Second question is here in case the first can’t be answered in this format)

Thanks for the thread and all the hard work you put in on this site.

by TomReagan on Jan 18, 2026 10:55 AM EST reply actions

well yeah that's pretty tough for this format.

I am partial to how the Rays handle their pitchers. I would say the vast majority of teams are “in the middle” so to speak and are neither particularly good nor particularly bad at developing players.

When I said earlier that it bothered me that the White Sox loved Molina so much and made me question my judgment, that was about 70% joke but about 30% true. I loved Jared Mitchell coming out of college and we saw what happened there (yes, there was the injury involved).

Of course, the White Sox loved Addison Reed and he was one of my favorites coming out of college, and that one has worked out.

by John Sickels on Jan 18, 2026 1:13 PM EST up reply actions

the white sox seem to have a rather high percentage of success with near-major league ready pitchers they have acquired.

danks, floyd, jenks, thornton. without thinking about it too much, i’d probably put their record in that up against any team in basball. i would have thought that might tend to make someone give the white sox the benefit of the doubt in their acquisitions, not the other way. but perhaps the lapse in time since the white sox pursued that strategy either makes the mind forgetful or makes one question whether they can start doing it again now that they’ve begun to pursue that strategy again. it is essentially still the same development group on the pitching side.

of course, position players have pretty much been a black hole for the white sox.

You say: “He would probably better off pitching out of the major league bullpen than going to Albuquerque if he doesn’t make the rotation in spring training.”

Baseball America says: “His changeup is fringy but good enough to keep hitters honest.” and “Some scouts believe Eovaldi fits best as a two-pitch, late-inning reliever, but Los Angeles will keep him a starter. He’ll vie for a spot in the big league rotation in spring training.”

Assuming he doesn’t make the rotation this year, do you seee him in the bullpen for the long term, or just for a year to get MLB innings before getting stretched out? What is the chance that over the long term, the Dogers use him as a starter not a reliever? 50%? 80%?

Saw him a few times down here in Tampa. I love the kids demeanor and attitude. Very friendly and professional (it’s almost like he had a dad that played the game). As a player, he has a solid swing that produces good pop and contact. He’ll still need some reps at 3B to fully grasp the position, but watching him, he definitely has the athleticism to play the hot corner - there were numerous times I watched him range left or right and make a solid grab and spin to throw out some runners. With Nunez and ARod in NY, they can take their time with him and develop him properly.
I think the most telling thing for me was listening to Bichette Sr. and Schuerholtz Jr. (The Manager of the FSL Braves) talk and Holtz saying how impressed HE was with Jr’s attitude and play. He said “He was my favorite interview before the draft.”

Sanchez was drafted in the supplemental first round in 2010, 34th overall, from high
school in Barstow, California. I gave him an aggressive rating last year, but he didn’t
quite live up to my expectations, struggling with his command in the Appalachian
League. He has a low-90s power sinker that hitters struggle to loft, along with an
erratic-if-promising curveball. His changeup is below average right now. Sanchez’s
profile contains a nice combination of strikeouts and ground balls, and I remain
impressed with his long-term outlook. He could develop into a number two starter,
although right now Noah Syndergaard and Justin Nicolino are ahead of him. Grade
B-.

by billybgame on Jan 18, 2026 11:07 AM EST reply actions

he's still young and I like him more than I should. Optimistic Grade B.

Casey Crosby missed most of 2008 after Tommy John surgery, had a strong year in
the Midwest League in 2009, then missed almost all of 2010 with mysterious elbow
pain that the doctors could find no cause for. He returned in 2011 and had an
inconsistent season in Double-A, although he’s still just 23 years old and remains
one of the most impressive talents in the Tigers system. When healthy, Crosby owns
a 92-95 MPH power sinker, getting to 97-98 at times. His curveball is excellent, and
he’s improved his changeup, giving him two plus pitches and a third that could be at
least average. His biggest problem is simple command: he gets behind in the count
too often, and while he’s gotten away with it in the minors, major league hitters
would make him suffer for it. He needs Triple-A and I think he would struggle if
rushed to the Show too soon, but his upside is quite notable. With his remaining
command issues we have to go with a Grade B, but if you see Crosby’s K/BB ratio
improve, raise that grade!

oh, boy

Lotto ticket, eh?

Of all those guys, I think Jose Fernandez and Jed Bradley are guys I would invest some lotto money in. I think the payout chance is higher. I know Bradley doesn’t have the reputation of some of the others, but he LOOKS more like a major league pitcher than several of the others. He’s smooth., which is not objective of course, but the first thing I think of when I see him is “major league pitcher”. Many of the others I think “project.”

Positional Scarcity

It seems like certain positions — shortstop, second base, third base and catcher — are always thin in the majors yet teams don’t groom/draft more players in those positions. Are there guys on the way that we can look to to fill these holes at the major league level? Which ones have the best chances to reach All-Star levels?

by BNBurger on Jan 18, 2026 11:16 AM EST reply actions

this is too broad of a question too

However, consider that a lot of guys who are outfielders or corner players in the majors were shortstops when they were in high school because they were usually the best athletes on their teams, even if they don’t/can’t stick there in pro ball.

Dae-Eun Rhee

What are you hearing from scouts on Rhee?

by WrenFGun on Jan 18, 2026 11:20 AM EST reply actions

good things

SLEEPER ALERT!! Signed out of Korea in 2007 for $525,000, Rhee’s career was
slowed by Tommy John surgery in 2009. He returned in 2010 but wasn’t at full
strength, but went back to Daytona in 2011 and looked more like his old self. At his
best, Rhee features a low-90s fastball, a curveball, and a changeup. All three pitches
are solid, and he has very good command. He did his best pitching in the second half
last year, with a series of high-strikeout/strong command starts to end the season
resulting in a 32/5 K/BB in his last 25 innings. Although he doesn’t have the blazing
stuff of a rotation anchor, his ability to throw three pitches for strikes gives him
projection as a number three or four starter. His late season flourish is a good marker
heading into 2012. Late-season reports had his velocity increasing into the mid-90s,
and he could break out in a big way this year. Grade C+.

by John Sickels on Jan 18, 2026 1:42 PM EST up reply actions

i'd add

That the split-change/splitter/changeup is a plus pitch (it’s his best offering). The fastball (off the top, a 4 seamer with some nice late action) has hit 94/95 this past year, but I know there are some that feel he’s better off in the low 90’s as he seemed to over-throw it at times. I’ve got it as a slider, but it’s possible it’s a curveball and I’m mistaken. It’s improved, but there were moments were it was a tick below-average, but it flashed some above average potential at times.

Biggest thing for me, though, was the fact that, in the 2nd half of the year, he was consistently working 6 innings for the most part. His stamina as a starter had always been questioned because he doesn’t have a big frame and there wasn’t enough in Peoria to tell if he could handle a heavier workload (also because the Cubs piggyback in Peoria).

by toonsterwu on Jan 18, 2026 2:08 PM EST up reply actions

Good stuff

As you point out, his stamina got better. As mentioned in the book comment, he showed better command late in the year to go with improved velocity. All markers of a breakout for 2012.

by bp42810 on Jan 18, 2026 11:48 AM EST reply actions

Jorge Reyes was drafted out of Oregon State in 2009, a 17th round pick. He had a
rough patch in the California League in 2010, but was much more effective in
Double-A in ’11, seeing good success as a swingman in the Texas League. He posted
a 3.90 ERA with a 74/24 K/BB in 88 innings over 20 starts, fair performance, but he
was outstanding after moving to the bullpen in early August, posting a 0.36 ERA with a 24/6 K/BB and 19 hits in 25 innings. He also vultured five wins in relief.Reyes has a low-90s fastball and a good slider, but his changeup is lacking and he’s probably best-suited for a relief role. Although not overpowering, he throws strikes and works very quickly. The Padres have a lot of raw material for a future bullpen, and Reyes is another piece. Grade C.

by ZeFreed on Jan 18, 2026 11:50 AM EST reply actions

A consistent producer for three years at the University of Virginia, Proscia was
drafted in the seventh round last June. He went to the California League and
continued to hit well. Granted, it was High Desert, and he had a sharp home (1.020
OPS)/road (.727 OPS) split. Still, he went from college to High-A and wasn’t
overwhelmed, which is a nice marker. Proscia has some athleticism, arm strength,
and intriguing power, but his swing mechanics are questioned and he needs work
with the strike zone. Grade C but he could surprise.

Chris Carpenter (Cubs)

What’s in store for him this year?

by nivarsity on Jan 18, 2026 11:56 AM EST reply actions

splits season between AAA and majors

Chris Carpenter has a terrific arm with a fastball that’s touched 100 MPH and works
consistently in the mid-90s. The pitch has movement, too, and is a legitimate plusplus
offering on his best days. He also has a very good slider, but his changeup has
never been more than so-so, so it made sense for the Cubs to move him to the
bullpen last year. It didn’t work, at least not right away: he was particularly awful in
Triple-A, totally losing his command due to mechanical problems. Some people have
written him off, but that’s a mistake. He looked much better in the Arizona Fall
League, posting an 18/2 K/BB in 14 innings with a 3.29 ERA, which is superb given
the hitting conditions. Small sample, of course, but that’s an awfully good K/BB,
especially given his history. If Carpenter develops even average command, his stuff
is good enough for him to be a very helpful set-up man, if not a closer. I still think he
has a chance to be a valued commodity. Grade C+.

by guru4u on Jan 18, 2026 4:47 PM EST up reply actions

It seems like Wilmer Flores has been around since the Nixon Administration, but
he’s still just 20 years old, not even the equivalent of a college junior yet. He hasn’t
lived up to his potential by any means, and his production actually slipped last year,
his OPS dropping from +7 percent in ’10 to negative 4 percent. He still makes contact and
demonstrates raw power, but his impatient approach holds him back. He is
outgrowing shortstop and began the transition to third base in winter ball, but of
course he’ll have to hit a lot better than this to have a future at an infield corner. I
think it is clear Flores has suffered for being rushed, but it comes back to the
birthday: he is just way too young to give up on, and he still has time to blossom.
The chance of that happening seems a little less each year that his production
remains stagnant, but I’m not ready to pull the plug yet. The fact that he keeps the
strikeouts under control despite his other problems is a good marker. Grade B-.

West, Scheppers, Perez, Ramirez, or a more wild card type like MDLS?

Matt Davidson

What are his major positives & negatives, and if all goes well is Matt Williams (also a DBack) a good comp ceiling?

Thanks, and sorry if this is 2 questions, I will just take your overall assessment of him.

by BigG'S on Jan 18, 2026 12:51 PM EST reply actions

davidson

I don’t really see him as Matt Williams.

Matt Davidson moved up to the California League last year and held his own.
Considering the difference in contexts between the ’10 Midwest League and the ’11
Cal circuit, he lost ground in relative terms, his OPS+ dropping from +22 percent to
just +4 percent. However, scouts seemed pleased with the development of his swing
and believe he’ll continue producing home runs at higher levels, although in my
opinion we’ll have to see what happens with his batting average and OBP. Although
their numbers are quite similar, Davidson now ranks ahead of organization-mate
Bobby Borchering in the eyes of most scouts. He has more mobility than Borchering,
has a better chance to stick at third base, and is six months younger, which makes a
significant difference in terms of projection when dealing with players of very
similar skill sets. Grade B-.

wow

Wow, I just got a couple of emails from White Sox fans accusing me of denigrating “White Sox fans”. One says it must be because the team represents a “working class” area.

Geez, I said something semi-snarky about the organization, then backed off when someone pointed out that it wasn’t quite accurate. I’ve seen White Sox fans say far, far worse things about the team than I ever have, and I don’t recall saying anything negative about the fans.

And as for the “class” part…I will point out that my wife’s parents are from Chicago, my wife was born in Chicago, and I’m far more of a working class person than an “upper class” person. My dad was an Iowa farm boy and I am a midwesterner born and bred.

by tuna411 on Jan 18, 2026 6:37 PM EST up reply actions

yeah...

Yeah…I mean, I’m used to being told I’m wrong about a player or that I’m just stupid or something, and that’s fine, but this class consciousness thing hacks me off.

Of course, Yankees fans accuse me of Red Sox bias, and Red Sox fans accuse me of Yankees bias. I’m used to all that kind of thing but this is the first time I’ve ever been accused of anti-working class bias and that strikes a cord with me.

I know what my prejudices are. I’m far more likely to be unfairly snarky about rich people or upper class people than I am about working class people.

it's easier blaming you

than admitting that organizationally speaking, their team kinda sucks! :D Kidding aside, I do tend to target players in fantasy leagues that “smart” teams like the Rangers, Sox, A’s and Jays target. I still think Darvish should be better than expected for this reason.

Well for what it counts for, I’m a sox fan and think you have a balanced view teamwise, even with Twins guys.

But seriously, don’t slap this stigma on all Sox fans. South Side Sox (the Sox SBNation Blog) in particular is a community of some excellent, insightful and knowledable fans who are very realistic about this system. Sure there are some idiot fans mixed into the fanbase, but no more than any other team.
