Davis
Yeah, he’s being rushed. At least half a season at AAA would have been better. Would not be surprised if he gets sent back down when Murphy comes off the DL and the rest of the offense stops slumping. IMO, he’s a stopgap measure, something to try to energize a non-existent offense.
Of course, if he’s cranking the ball by the time Murphy gets healthy, all bets are off. But I doubt it.

Ike is probably being rushed, sure... but he *can* help them right now.
So it doesn’t bother me a whole lot. I’ve seen variations of this mentioned many time around the interwebs already, but when you DFA your opening day 3 hole hitter (Mike Jacobs) 11 days in, its time to clean house. The Mets have a bad GM and a bad manager at this point and they consistently do things that reinforce that if you ever have any doubts. Many of their plans not only turn out terrible, but most of what they’ve been trying to do recently had pretty much zero chance of success to begin with. JD actually just wrote something about Ike yesterday.
Its a shame Felix Pie got hurt. He was really poised to break out. He’s still very young. Next year he turns 26 and I’ll be pegging him for a breakout again. Its a moot point now, but I felt he clearly was a superior option to the hobbled Reimold. Pie was a much better defender (essentially a CF playing LF) and I easily could have seen him having a breakout season with the bat like Reimold did last year.
I’m not at all surprised Brad Bergesen got sent down. What would be surprising is if he ever makes a MLB rotation again. He’s a pretty bad pitcher with bad peripherals who got lucky for one season on balls in play. These balls hit right at fielders were interpreted by some fans as a kind of innate pitchability in Bergesen that made them slightly optimistic about his future. He is not a good pitcher.

Ike Davis is ready
A year ago, Ike went struggling with a .652 OPS in Brookly in 2008, to last season being one of the better hitters in A+, and then demolishing the AA Eastern League. To my eyes, he’s taken an even bigger step forward this offseason.
At this point, I expect he’ll be hitting .290 with 30 HR this year in MLB. Not only is he ready, he might be the best hitter in that lineup right now. I think the Mets only waited a couple of weeks to be sure they control his rights through 2016 (he won’t have over 172 days service this year).

Hmm...
That could be, and if so that makes some sense.

That is to say
They just wanted some fill in 1B options for the first couple weeks. I don’t agree with that plan for a number of reasons, but at least there is some logic to it.

I think
saying he might be the best hitter in the Mets lineup right now is stretching the truth a bit.

I'll say this
No team with a payroll >$120million should be in that position without a backup plan.
No matter how good a rookie is they are often prone to struggles while they adjust. Look at fellow ASU alum Dustin Pedroia’s first month in the majors. For the Mets, that could mean the playoffs or not.

Well, there was a backup plan
It just sucked.
Murphy was the starter. Jacobs was the backup plan. He sucked. What annoys me is that they could be giving Chris Carter some at bats here. He should have been the backup plan IMO.

Murphy isn't very good.
Not sure there was ever reason to think he could be good. He’s a 1B only who can’t hit like a 1B. Hundreds of guys hanging around the minors with that skillset.
I like Carter. He could be pretty useful - which he should be, since he cost the Mets a 1st rounder and a 1st comp.

Murphy's a bit better than Carter
There’s really not a lot of difference between Murphy and Carter’s bats. Carter’s bat is good, but gets a bit over rated due to some strong minor league hitting environments.
And Murphy is a better defender. Murphy was actually decent at 3B, and is pretty good at 1B. Carter was pretty poor at 1B, is probably better off kept in LF, but not good there either.

Totally disagree
Murphy is bad IMO. Tremendously overrated. Can’t believe how much was written about this kid the last couple years.

Over rated yes
But still easily better than Carter

Neither is good
so it doesn’t matter. IMHO.

the best part of this post
“At this point, I expect he’ll be hitting .290 with 30 HR this year in MLB.” apparently wasn’t the most incredulous thing he said.

Wright and Bay are better
Well, Wright and Bay are probably better. But I think Ike is close. After an OPS of only .837 last year, Wright seems like less a sure thing. Ike right now at least has some definite Citi Field power.
And I think he’s sort of similar to a LH Bay.
In any case, we can probably agree he’s their best LHB anyway (honorable mention to Angel Pagan).

Wright, Bay, and Reyes are better. Beltran, if he ever heals, is better.
by Lunkwill Fook on Apr 20, 2025 12:34 PM EDT up reply actions
Reyes
Reyes is a more valuable player, but a lot of that is defense and base running. Just hitting though, he’s a career .768 OPS guy, with his best two seasons being .833 and .841. I think Ike is better than that right now. I also think Angel Pagan right now is about as good a bat as Reyes.
by acerimusdux on Apr 20, 2025 12:45 PM EDT up reply actions
If you really think Ike is going to do an .841 right away
I’ve got a bridge for you.
by Lunkwill Fook on Apr 20, 2025 12:50 PM EDT up reply actions
He's got a better shot at it than Reyes
That was Reyes career year.
I’m not guaranteeing Ike does that right off.
But if I’m making a bet, and have to choose, I’ll take the over on that one.

Reyes had a career year at age 23? Really?
by Lunkwill Fook on Apr 20, 2025 1:04 PM EDT up reply actions
speed peaks at 24
And even his hitting is very speed dependent.
Yes, he could still have a better year, but I wouldn’t bank on it.
And that’s his best to date, and came with a career best BABIP.
by acerimusdux on Apr 20, 2025 1:13 PM EDT up reply actions
Yet his best OPS+ was two years later. And power matures with age so you have to expect his power to increase. It’s ridiculous to suggest his best ever year would be when he’s 23.

You Can't Be Serious
He’ll hit 30 home runs playing half his games in Petco East?
I reject your reality and substitute my own.

I think you're confused.
Davis had trouble with strikeouts in his limited Double-A experience and has shown pretty much no ability to hit lefties (debut hit off Marshall withstanding).
They’re calling him up based on what? A nice performance in the AFL, a nice spring training, and a good showing in like a half-dozen Triple-A games?
Davis might be New York’s best 1B option, but that’s more so because the Mets’ other 1B options suck, and not because he’s necessarily ready to fulfill his potential. They’re playing him every day, and I expect him to have a lot of trouble with LHP.

Ike will be fine
as long as they’re patient with him and they play him everyday including against lefties I don’t think being called up now will hurt him
by jarjets89 on Apr 20, 2025 12:42 PM EDT reply actions
But if the Mets want to win, which is clearly the motivation for this move
then they’re making themselves worse by playing Davis against LHP. He should be in Triple-A working on his pitch recognition and hitting against lefties, and the Mets simply should’ve found a better option at first.

As Alskor said...
I wrote a post on him yesterday. I won’t repeat what I wrote there, but this reaks of Omar trying to save his job and him not having a plan.
My biggest concern with Davis is that he still hasn’t proven that he can hit lefties and maybe the MLB isn’t the best place for him to learn (or maybe it is).

Ding ding ding!
It’s a complete move of desperation. I talked about this on a BtBS post, but often times front office regimes will call up their most talented prospects as a final attempt to win goodwill and potentially catch lightning in a bottle.
With the Mejia and Davis call-ups, I’m not sure what another explanation could be.
