That was the smoothest mock draft ever.
Use this thread to discuss how you did. I will start writing mock draft summaries but that will take some time and might not be finished until tomorrow.

SF Giants
Between John, Fla-Giant and me the San Francisco Giants now have a power hitting OF, a middle infielder who is a Pedroia clone and the next Lincecum
1. Bryce Brentz OF (Sickels)
2. Tony Wolters SS/2b (wilriv21)
3. Cody Buckell RHP (Fla-Giant)

I just wish we had gone for one of the college SPs that were still available at #24 (Ranaudo, Paxton). I would like to get somebody to the majors quickly so we can swing a trade with our excess pitching before Cain, Sanchez and Licecum all hit the FA market.

Chicago Cubs
I’m really happy with how my draft turned out.
1) Justin O’Connor C
2) Mike Kvasnicka C/OF
3) Burch Smith RHP
Once I get a few things organized, I’ll talk about my general strategy, some of the other guys I considered, guys I was hoping would fall, and also what I would plan to do going forward.
Round 4 should be fun, though.
by Outshined_One on Jun 5, 2025 3:39 PM EDT reply actions
Summary
1.16 C Justin O’Connor
I’ve been back and forth on #16 ever since getting a director spot. The Cubs have been notorious for shying away from prep players ever since Tim Wilken took over, as they have only drafted two HS players in the first three rounds during his tenure (3B Josh Vitters and LHP Austin Kirk). But this was just a strange year. I was hoping OF Michael Choice or 2B/OF Kolbrin Viten would fall, but that wasn’t in the cards. So, this pick was basically between O’Connor, Workman, and Eibner. I don’t like the idea of drafting Eibner as a hitter this high, so he was out. I like a lot about Workman, but after getting a good look at his mechanics on Youtube, I just couldn’t pull the trigger. The Cubs have been linked to O’Connor for awhile now and I like his potential behind the dish and at the plate, so he was the logical pick.
2.15 C/OF Mike Kvasnicka
He wasn’t even on my board coming into the second round. I expected him to be gone in the bottom half of the first round. When my pick came around, it was between him, SS Derek Dietrich, OF Austin Wates, and C Micah Gibbs. I’d have been torn between Dietrich and Wates (I like Wates’ potential at the plate better); I don’t like Gibbs a lot, but the Cubs have incredibly strong connections with LSU. Kvasnicka offered major league bloodlines, reasonably good switch hitting ability, and a good defensive catcher behind the dish. That made sense for the Cubs. I couldn’t pass on him for those reasons.
RHP Burch Smith
I was talking with a friend of mine online during the draft. He works for a low level baseball agency, representing guys who mostly figure to be drafted in later rounds. Burch Smith was a name he recommended to me, especially since the Cubs have reportedly been keeping a close eye on him. His profile seemed quite tantalizing, as he has some projection remaining but has come along nicely. The Cubs are fine with taking JUCO guys, so that was not an issue for me. I also gave strong consideration to OF Tyler Holt and OF Todd Cunningham here.
RHP Jordan Cooper
This was just a pure guess on my part. I’ve never seen him before, I didn’t do any research on him, and I only read his profile on BA’s website shortly before the 4th round began. He seemed to fit, so I figured, why not?
Overall, I like to think this draft was pretty strong and also reasonably realistic for the Cubs. Following the fourth round, I’d look to take the Ricketts family up on their offer of expanding the draft budget by targeting guys who fell because of signability concerns. I’d try and snag a few guys who ask for six figure bonuses and attempt to pry HS and JUCO guys away from strong commitments. The farm system could use a boost with some high ceiling guys in the lower levels; it seems like this would be a good year to do that.
Thanks to everyone for this! And thanks specially to John!

I was happy with my choices for the Reds
I think Colon is a great fit on that team. He should move through their system fast and be a great piece for their major league team. He may not have start potential, but if he’s an above average all around shortstop, that will fit well with their powerful offense.
The 3rd round pick of Taijuan Walker sort of goes well with the Colon back, as its the riskier pick with the big upside for the team. Walker is a really good athlete with a live arm, but his delivery and mechanics certainly have their issues.
Marcus Knecht, who I took in the 2nd round, is personally a guy I like a lot. His combination of speed and power makes him pretty unique, and I could see him becoming similar to a recent Reds pick in Drew Stubbs.
by doron on Jun 5, 2025 3:41 PM EDT reply actions
Colon is perfect for the Reds. I can see some Barry Larkin similarity. The more the fans watch Colon play the more they will be enamored with Colon and his talents.

Texas Rangers Community Mock Draft Results
1 (15) Michael Choice, of, Texas-Arlington
1 (22) Asher Wojciechowski, rhp, The Citadel
1 (45) Jarrett Parker, of, Virginia
1 (49) Chance Ruffin, rhp, Texas-Austin
2 (72) Micah Gibbs, c, LSU
3 (103) Daniel Gibson, lhp, Tampa (Fla.) Jesuit HS
by c60 on Jun 5, 2025 3:44 PM EDT reply actions
actually, I love this draft
If the Rangers come out of this draft with that haul, they should be thrilled. Mostly college players with a solid blend of safety and upside. Didn’t totally get the Gibson pick because he might need overslot to get a deal done in round 3, but all of your other guys should get done at slot so maybe a luxury is okay. If Gibson doesn’t sign, I guess you just push the pick back until next year when hopefully the money situation is a bit more cleared up.
by mrkupe on Jun 5, 2025 3:47 PM EDT up reply actions
Daniel Gibson
I agree that Daniel Gibson is a reach, but you’ve hit on my thinking - Texas can possibly come up with the money to sign Gibson with the first five at or near slot and if they don’t they can replace the pick next year. There were some good college names available (Devin Lohman, Drew Smyly, to name two) in round 3, but I just could not see Texas passing on a quality left-handed high school pitcher with Gibson’s tools after the first five went down as they did.

A's Draft with thought process explained
Here’s what we got, with the thought process that led to each pick:
1.10: Karsten Whitson, Chipley HS, FL (Law rank - 5, BA rank - 15)
It was either him or Michael Choice, and I went with the high upside arm. I think the system needs another talent who should hit the bigs around the same time as Ynoa, and Whitson fits.
2.60: Mel Rojas, Jr., OF, Wabash Valley CC (Law - 37, BA - 135)
Was ready to take Ryan LaMarre here but he went four picks earlier. It came down to Rojas, Minnesota catcher Michael Kvasnicka and Indiana State Righty Jacob Petricka. The latter two were guys I thought the A’s would pick at that point. I went with Rojas’s tools and pedigree. I’ve seen enough of him to really like the possibilities. And also that it isn’t a likely A’s pick, so I get to have a little fun before the inevitable frustration on Monday.
3.92: Christian Yelich, 1B, Westlake HS, Thousand Oaks, CA (Law - 26, BA - 52)
At this point I wanted Tulane 3B Rob Segedin, prep 3B Kris Bryant or possibly Virginia Tech righty Mathew Price. Segedin went 12 picks before our spot and Bryant went three picks before. Yelich was ranked just before Price on my board, and I quickly re-read scouting reports on both to figure out who was a more realistic pick for Oakland. It turned out to be a tossup - Yelich is a great HS bat who Keith Law ranked 26th overall and BA ranked 52nd. I’d ranked him lower based on his defensive limitations (smooth at 1B and athletic enough for the OF, but a terrible arm), but he has a legit sandwich round bat at the least, and getting him at 92 broke the tie with Price, who is a 3rd-4th rounder but nothing more. The reactions from teams picking after me convinced me I made the right choice.
by ToddyBaseball on Jun 5, 2025 3:44 PM EDT reply actions
Yelich got schooled when he batted against the top pitchers in SoCal over the past year.

The best draft on the board, but you did have the luxury of the most picks by far.
Watch out for Sale, great pitcher, but horrible mechs - he’s a major injury just waiting to happen.

DBacks Draft
1. (6) Josh Sale, OF, Bishop Blanchet HS
2. (56) Ryan LaMarre, OF, Michigan
3. (88) Scott Frazier, RHP, Upland HS
Some quick thoughts:
1. Josh Sale: Some people knocks Sale’s athleticism but he’s not a slug by any means and I really believe he’ll hit. He may struggle at first if a team adjusts his swing but he has great tools for hitting, good plate discipline, and a strong work ethic.
2. Ryan LaMarre: I didn’t put LaMarre on my board because his ranking (30s) didn’t fit in with my picks but he’s the rare fast-twitch athlete w/ a college track record. His plate discipline is a concern but it doesn’t matter as much to me since he’s walked more in the past and is raking right now.
3. Scott Frazier: Couple guys I wanted got picked right before (Adam, Cates) so I went with Frazier. He’s a risky pick as his funky mechanics make him inconsistent but the stuff he shows when he’s right makes him worth it. He could be another tall pitcher who just needs some more time.

Pirates
1.02: Jameson Taillon, RHP, The Woodlands HS (TX)
2.02: Robbie Aviles, RHP, Suffren HS (NY)
3.02: Mike Olt, 3B, University of Connecticut
4.02: Luke Jackson, RHP, Calvary Christian HS (FL)
1. With reports that Taillon is a legitimate option this was a slam dunk.
2. Aviles’s injury really puts a damper on my draft class, and I wish I could go back and go with my other option (ranked one spot ahead of Aviles, I just went against my board), Austin Wates. I liked that he was athletic, somewhat projectable and had a plus change up. He should be even more signable than he was now, but it still sucks
3. Olt was a conservative pick. I like his defense at third base and he may be able to hit. If he does, he should be a pretty good player. I’m not wild about the pick, but I needed someone safe.
4. Not an official pick, but one that I like quite a bit. I have no idea what Jackson’s signability is like; I haven’t read anything on it being difficult so I guess that’s a plus. An athlete with a big arm, and I’ll hope that we can fix the consistency and delivery issues.

Three righty high school arms
In the first four picks would be a disaster. The strength of he draft is in RHP, I really hope the pirates FO grab some bats early, especially left handed ones.

well yes, the strength IS in RHP
So . . .wouldn’t you want to take advantage of that strength?
by mrkupe on Jun 5, 2025 5:06 PM EDT up reply actions
Yeah, I don't see why I should shy away from the strength of the draft
I considered Machado at 1.02 and Austin Wates at 2.02, but neither were left handed.

I still like it
If getting Aviles underslot means that you have a little bit of money to put towards somebody else in a hypothetical later round, then I’d think about it. Considering that Taillon may be asking for a truly outrageous bonus, getting a deal where you can isn’t to be underrated.

Royals
1.04: Yasmani Grandal, C, Miami
2.04: A.J. Vanegas, RHP, Redwood Christian HS (CA)
3.04: Jason Adam, RHP, Blue Valley Northwest HS (KS)
1. Was my pick from the start. Does a lot of things well — hits for average, some power, good discipline at plate, nice defense, and leader behind the plate. I wonder if he could have a career like Jason Varitek, who had a real nice offensive peak. (BA rank #13)
2. Will be tough sign, but I like his upside a lot. Nice fastball with life and curve looks like future ML out pitch to me. Will need to develop changeup, but I like his chances. Fits what Royals look for in HS pitcher. Like said, will be tough sign as Stanford commit, but that hasn’t stopped Royals in recent years. (BA rank #47)
3. This was my target in this round all along. Adam is a local kid out of Blue Springs, just outside of Kansas City. Not as much projection as Vanegas, but similar pitcher. Fastball up to 95 and nice curve. Good delivery that he repeats. Not sure how strong commit to Missouri is, but local team should be able to sign him. (BA rank #54)
Very excited about my draft overall. Would be outstanding if this is the way it went.

Don’t like Landry at all for the BoSox - they already have a guy exactly like him named Elsbury. Harvey will disappoint in the end, unless they move him to the closer position - but then why draft him that high with somebody like Ranaudo still on the board?
IMO, the draft hinges on them being able to sign Lee (doubtful) and if Paxton can polish up his game.

Why does it matter if they currently have a player that is exactly like him...
Both guys can play multiple positions.
Do you expect Landry to step right in to the Red Sox everyday line-up upon being drafted…
Neither do I.
Then, what’s this issue with the similarity between he and Ellsbury…
It’s going to take Landry about three years to be MLB ready, and Ellsbury could be gone at that point, or the one with less range could play LF.
All of this “so-and-so is similar to so-and-so” is inconsequential.

BoSox need another corner OF/IF bopper - with power - not another singles and doubles hitting CF. With so many power bats still on the board when you picked Landry, you made a mistake (IMHO). The BoSox have aging/fading stars at 3B, LF, RF and only Youklis looks like a guy that will be around 3 years from now. Elsbury is only playing LF because they have no power bat to put there - his speed and D are wasted there. Next year Elsbury will be back in CF.
Landry would be a kid that you could take a flyer on in round 5 or later, but the BoSox need a power injection ASAP.

I see what you're saying here.
I went BPA, first off.
Secondly, the vast majority of guys drafted will never even end up becoming anything more than MLB filler/career minor leaguers.
This isn’t the NFL.
The Red Sox have the 2nd best financial resources in Major League Baseball.
They will have no problem finding 3B/LF/RF via free agency.
If a corner guy were the BPA in my mind at my picks, then I would have selected him.

But yeah, for me a lot of it would depend on whether or not you can sign Lee. I LOVE Zach Lee . . .really impressed with him, and if he’d sign for $3 million I’d be inclined to give it to him. But I’m not sure that will be enough.

Braves
1S - Seth Blair/RHP/Arizona State
Has flashed tremendous upside, but his control sometimes wavers which leads to high pitch counts. Will initially be tried as a starter, but if he does not succeed there should be a strong guy out of the bullpen
2 - Drew Vettleson/OF/Central Kitsap (WA) HS
I like his bat. I do not think he will ever be a top power guy, but I think he can hit .300+ with 15 HR. Has a strong arm as he is also an ambidexterous pitcher (throwing 93 as a righty, 88 as a lefty) which should translate well to the OF. Compared favorably to Andre Ethier and J.D. Drew, hopefully he stays healthier than the latter
2 - Derek Dietrich/IF/Georgia Tech
Will like move to 3B, and while he does not have ideal power, he has a strong arm and a solid bat which I think could serve him well as, at minimum, a utility guy. Local connection also helps.
3 - Sam Dyson/RHP/South Carolina
Another solid arm, should move quickly without breaking the back financially. I like his stuff plus he has shown good command in college.
4 - Chad Lewis/3B/Marina (CA) HS
Taken in the unofficial 4th Round. I like his potential as a corner IF. Another guy who I think has the potential to be a high average guy. Probably more power than some of the other hitters I took, but his swing is the least refined of the three. Being budget conscious with the earlier picks of Blair, Dietrich, and Dyson should allow this pick to fit financially if it takes more than slot to get it done

3 out of 5 ain't bad
Love the HSers, do not like the college guys. There were so many other better college guys available for the Braves at those 2 points. Tyler Holt would be perfect for the Braves with his D, speed and OBP - they need a CFer now.

I had considered him for the pick that I took Dyson with, but I am not as high as others about his upside with wood
by mtk52983 on Jun 5, 2025 4:55 PM EDT up reply actions
Why not?
Do you realize that he was the top hitter (avg. = .371 in 89 ABs) for Team USA last summer - and they used wooden bats? That was the team that had guys like Colon, Brentz, Choice and Grandal. He also had an OBP of .513 and stole 19 of 21 bases, while starting all 23 games in CF.

by Fla-Giant on Jun 5, 2025 5:05 PM EDT up reply actions
He did hit for a high average
but if I am remembering correctly 5 doubles were his only XBH. Of course if I remembered that incorrectly then that would have had an influence on my pick and since it was fast paced I could not exactly confirm everything when I needed to (a number of the guys I had higher went off the board just before that pick)
by mtk52983 on Jun 5, 2025 5:18 PM EDT up reply actions
Yeah, only 5 doubles, but he was the lead-off hitter on a team loaded with power. His job was to work the count (which he did by getting 24 BBs) and get on base (which he did at a .513 clip).
In other words, he sacrificed his stats for the team - which is another reason I like him over Landry - and don’t get me started on his plus D in CF, plus arm, and plus speed.

The Tago/Eibner/Sanchez/Stanek/Gumbs run was excellent. I’m not all that confident in Allie starting, but he definitely has an impressive arm. I’m not too high on Holt and Thompson.

signability
I had other guys in mind in various places, but signability was one of the factors for why I did what I did. If the Angels need to go significantly overslot to get Allie done and then have several other preps to sign . . .well, decisions need to be made.
I think Holt’s bat might be underappreciated right now, and if it is then he’s a real find in the third round. Thompson is a year removed from winning the Big 12 Triple Crown . . .I think he might have to move to first, but when he gets himself back into gear, that is a first round caliber bat that could be had at the end of the third round. In any case, they balance the upside-heavy class out very nicely IMO.

I really like that
Thompson pick where you got him, I would of liked his bat on the Twins but didn’t think he fit what they want in a 3B defensively.

After having missed out on both their 1st and 2nd rounders last year, I had the Rays looking for maximum upside here, and once Josh Sale went, Wilson was the highest guy left on my board. A tough sign, but the Rays have spent in the past and I see them reaching a deal here.
1.31: RHP Chad Bettis, Texas Tech
A slight overdraft, but with an unprotected pick I needed a signable college arm here, and once Wojo went, Bettis was on the top of my board. Some helium, has been pitching late into games and throws four pitches for strikes, although primary weapons are the FB and the slider.
1s.42: OF Reggie Golden, Wetumpka HS (Ala.)
Although he’s a prep OF, multiple sources (including Andy Seiler) describe him as signable. Rays ‘09 draft shows that they’re not afraid to go somewhat over-slot to get their guy, and he was too much of a bargain to pass up at #42.
2.66: OF Chevez Clarke, Marietta HS (Ga.)
The first pick that really didn’t fit my plan; I had him neck-and-neck with Golden and almost took him at 42. This is a protected pick, so if Andrew Friedman runs out of money, we’ll get this spot back again in 2011. I figured the Rays could take a chance here.
2.79: 3B Joe Leonard, Pitt
With an unprotected pick here, I needed an easy sign. It was a toss-up between Leonard and Segedin here, and I have Leonard by a nose. Absolutely thrilled with this pick.
3.98: RHP Justin Grimm, Univ. of Georgia
Another easy sign that hopefully frees up money for Wilson/Golden/Clarke. I was excited to see Grimm available this late.
4:131: C Rob Brantly, UC Riverside
A no-brainer this late.

I like this draft a lot
Bettis is the only pick that I don’t like.

Yankees
1.32 Tyrell Jenkins
2.82 Dan Klein
3.112 Kyle Blair
If I ran this draft I would have made it Barrett Loux, Drew Cisco, Drew Smyly.
Klein is a little weak early as a reliever though he could be this year’s Storen. Not a great fit with the Yankees. Blair is a nice selection for the third round. I want Jenkins to go to college first.

I'd take this class over yours, honestly
I really like Loux, but that combination is pretty mediocre upside-wise. I like the high upside Jenkins with the high floor Klein.

I am not one to take too many risks
so if that is what one likes, then this draft is probably better. I think Cisco>Klein still cuz I don’t want to be too conservative.

I'll have a post up later
Either here or at Bless You Boys- probably both depending on what the community thinks is kosher.
1.44: Jedd Gyorko, SS, West Virginia: A fast moving third baseman with some reasonable upside and a good floor to replace Brandon Inge in a few years. Wasn’t really looking for need, but he was the best player available, which was pretty convenient.
1.48: Kevin Gausman, RHP, CO HS: The goal here was to split the supplementals between bat and pitcher and then draft Garin Cecchini in the 3rd. It didn’t work out that way, but I’m still happy to get Gausman- he’s got 5 good pitches and projectablity working for him. He’ll be expensive but Gyorko should sign at slot, so that helps.
2.68: DeAndre Smelter, RHP, GA HS: Great fastball, potential plus splitter and slider (if he brings it back) are all great signs. Control’s a bit wacky, but he’s a great pick, especially since we have the budget to sign him to an above slot bonus.
3.100: Todd Cunningham, CF, Jacksonville State: I didn’t really want a CF prospect this high, but Cunningham is a good college bat with a good floor and a pretty good ceiling. Reminds me a bit of a Johnny Damon-type (though probably not that good) insofar as he’s got a well-rounded game. Would make a great #2 hitter in a few years, though if he makes it, he may have to move to LF.

good stuff
Might not have been the way you planned, but Gyorko and Cunningham give you some safety while Gausman and Smelter let you have some fun. Considering you didn’t get to pick until No. 44, really nice job.

Thanks
And you’re right about the safety- I was ready to go balls out on risky, high upside players though. Tigers farm needs them…

Twins
1-21 Brandon Workman RHP Texas
Took Workman over Eibner and Wojo basically because he’s the best bet out of those guys to be a quality MLB starter. Should sign quickly and this guy’s a horse who should devour innings and throw strikes, prototypical Twins pitcher
2-71 Matt Lipka, SS, McKinney HS, Frisco, TX
Was looking at Dietrich, Wates, Petricka, Kvasnicka but they got scooped before I could get to them so I decided to go with an athletic HS player. I also considered Simmons or Wolters in this spot but Lipka’s elite athleticism sets him apart. He has some raw parts to his game, but committing full time to baseball could polish him up quickly. It will take a little more to get him signed but with the Twins new revenue streams, they will be in the market to go overslot on guys like Lipka.
3-121 Kellen Sweeney, SS, Jefferson HS, Cedar Rapids, Iowa
I had targeted Sweeney in this spot, he is a mid-western kid with good bloodlines and athleticism and the Twins like those kinds of players. I’m thinking that he is going to be moved off SS, either to 2nd or the OF but I wouldn’t do it until he show’s he can’t hang. I really like the combination I got here of Lipka and Sweeney, they compliment each other very well.
4. Pat Dean LHP Toledo
I was looking for a college pitcher here and was hoping that Cooper or Kickham were available, but they both got snatched up. Basically, the reason I took Dean was on the BA page they said he had recieved comps to Glen Perkins and had an insanely low BB rate, definition of a Twins kind of guy. The hope is here is that I could save a little bit to throw at Lipka and still get a lefty SP prospect who is a polished guy with 3 pitches pitches.

better
Anyways . . .
Don’t really get your description of Workman . . .his command is hit or miss, which is one of the big reasons why he keeps yo-yoing on draft boards. But he’d be a solid choice here. Like the pick of Lipka too. A high risk draft, but high upside too.

you are correct sir
If you told me when we did our first MOD that Workman would be the pick there and I’d be happy with it, I would have called you a liar, but here we are.

Brewers
1.14 Alex Wimmers, RHP, Ohio State. Athletic right hander with tons of polish. Low 90s fastball, average curveball, with amazing plus plus changeup. I think Wimmers would be a solid pick for the Brewers in reality, and he has been linked to them for this draft. But I personally did not want to select him. I posted a poll over on BCB, giving fans a selection of about 8 players (7 of them being pitchers) and the fans were evenly split between Wimmers, Workman, AJ Cole and Matt Harvey. Cole was my personal pick, the reason being that I would much have preferred his upside as a future ace, to that of Wimmers, who is probably more of a #3.
2.64 Perci Garner, RHP, Ball State. Another athletic right hander, Garner came to BSU to play both football and baseball. 92 to 94 mph fastball with power curve with average slider and change up. If he can refine the slider or change profiles as a #2 or #1 starter. Probably was available because this is his first year focusing on baseball and is still a bit raw. As with hard throwing raw pitchers, control and command is an issue.
3.69 Andrelton Simmons, SS, Western Oklahoma State JC Amazing defender at shortstop who will most likely stay at the position. Great arm and footwork, could also pitch, as he has thrown 95 mph this year in limited use. His bat isnt necessarily a question mark, but he has gold glove potential at a defensive minded position, so I’m not worried about the bat. Also considered at this spot were Christian Yelich and Devin Lohman, big bat prospects. Alex Livsky was also a possibility here, but was concerned about the bat, and didnt want to draft a backup catcher this early.
Overall I’m not horribly impressed with what I had to play with for the first round, and in the 3rd after Yelich was gone, had to dig deep for a replacement. And even though my second rounder is a bit of a project, if it pans out it will have been a bargain.

Cardinals
1-25: Kaleb Cowart, 3B/RHP, Georgia HS
I’d try him as a right handed hitting 3B first. He looks bad from the left side and is a natural righty swinger. He’s got good tools defensively and could end up being a very good hitter. On the mound he has good size, a great fastball and decent mechanics. Lack of a good secondary pitch is why I would put him at 3rd and it’s probably why scouts are still split 50-50 on him. His fastball/size combo usually has scouts thinking pitcher. He could be a mid rotation starter or middle of the order hitter.
1-46: Sammy Solis, LHP, San Diego
A lefty Lance Lynn. He’s exactly what the Cardinals need after going with Cowart and Shelby Miller in the 1st round in 2009 and 2010. He should move quickly and may not just be a back of the rotation arm. A major need filled with a very talented player.
1-50: Kyle Parker, OF, Clemson
The Cards could certainly use a power bat with 25+ HR potential in their system. Parker’s future is in baseball and not football thanks to his 6’0" height. Hopefully he’ll make enough contact to hit at least between .260-.280 in his prime. He might be the next Ryan Ludwick.
2-75: Aaron Shipman, OF, Georgia HS
Tools, tools, tools. He’s got a fantastic arm and plus plus speed. Scouts love his swing mechanics at the plate so he could turn into a very good hitter. Patience will be needed with this pick but Shipman could turn out to be a great player.
3-106: Marcus Littlewood, SS, Utah HS
Not my pick and probably wouldn’t have been after taking Shipman. Littlewood is a little too raw and doesn’t have good enough potential to be a favorite for me.
My pick was Kyle Blair, Solis’ teammate. Blair has had a great season though his stuff hasn’t turned into a #2-3 starter’s repertoire. He still profiles as a big league starter.
by UncleBuck44 on Jun 5, 2025 8:32 PM EDT reply actions
solid draft
I can buy that they like Cowart, although it sounds like the signability concerns over him are reaching critical mass. Solis was an awesome pick at 46. Not very big on Parker but that sort of college-trained raw profile is something that the Cardinals would probably like. You killed it with the Shipman pick, really good. Littlewood was a very solid pick at 106, would have taken him over Blair.
by mrkupe on Jun 5, 2025 9:00 PM EDT up reply actions
Littlewood
He’s certainly not a reach at 106 as he’s right about there or a little higher in most rankings. He just doesn’t sound that good to me. Nothing really jumps out about him. He has a good arm and glove in the field but his range will likely push him to 3B. Especially when he fills out his 6’3" frame. And despite being 6’3", scouts just aren’t sure he’ll have more than average power because he’s a front foot hitter and not that great of a pure hitter.
Blair has had a fantastic season. He’s a big guy with a decent fastball, above average to sometimes plus breaking ball, usable changeup and improved command. With the season/finish he had I’d be surprised if he made it out of the 2nd round. Injury history is his biggest negative.
Jeff Luhnow also loves California college pitchers. So it’s a little bit of a fit. Although Luhnow likes the pitchers with bad stats(Thomas Eager, Gary Daley). Jake Thompson will likely be a Cardinal.

I think you might be underselling Littlewood a bit
He has good defensive skills and if a team wants to play him at short for a while, they probably could without issues. If he’s moved to third base he’s probably an excellent defensive player. His bat is decent, not great, but it’ll be playable. I could see him being a solid shortstop who compensates for below-average range with good fundamentals and a bat that would be at least average for the position, or a third baseman with plus defensive ability and an okay bat. If he doesn’t work out as a regular, he’s still got a future as a utility guy. That’s a good package for the 106th pick, especially out of a prep player who might just learn to take advantage of his build a bit more.
He’s not flashy, but Littlewood is a guy who is going to stand out to major league teams. There were a lot of guys (in particular, a lot of prep middle infielders) who got taken ahead of him when they shouldn’t have.
