2010 POST DRAFT MOD JAYS

Today was  a big day for our organization with 9 picks in the top 120.  How do you guys think we did?

Star-divide

Thanks to the guys that contributed to the selection process throughout the draft.  Here is who we got, lhp Chris Sale, RHP Barrett Loux, SS Yordy Cabrera, C Kellin Deglan, 3b Garin Cecchini, 1b, Hunter Morris, 3b Rob Segedin, RHP Robby Rowland, of Jake Skole.  What are the thoughts on how we did?  Do you think that we can realistically get everybody signed?

Budget

I don’t see one guy on the list that will break the bank, guys like Deglan, Skole might want a decent chunk of change, but nothing other worldly.
A lot more position players then I thought there would be, but that’s not a bad thing, Sale and Loux are solid pitching options.
I also like the position mix for the position players drafted, SS, 2x 3b, C, 1B, OF. Nice mix

FAIL

Good job, Bouncer.

I think the toughest guys to get signed will be the two 3rd round picks but considering that we didn’t take any huge bonus guys earlier in the draft we should be able to pony up the cash required to get them to turn pro.

Yordy Cabrera is not a SS by all reports but I guess just let him play himself off the position to begin with.

You did a great job!

And I’m not a Jays fan, so it’s a completely unbiased opinion.

The 2 picks I don’t like are Sale and Cabrera.

I have no problem with Sale’s potential or performance, you can’t argue with his results. I just think his mechanics will cause a shoulder or elbow injury sooner, rather than later. Check out this analysis, with video for my reasoning:

With Cabrera I don’t think he’s got enough tools to pick that high - there were HS kids with much more tools and higher upside, IMHO, at the time you picked him. For example, I’d pick both Cecchini and Skole before Cabrera - you were lucky they were still on the board for you.

liked your draft, didn't love it

Considering that the strength of the draft was definitely in the depth of the prep pitching, I was surprised that you ended up with only one prep pitcher, and even then in the third round. The Skole pick was really odd - that was a compensation pick, so you HAVE to get hi signed or you lose it forever. His leverage is consequently huge, and jerks the cost of your draft up unnecessarily.

Still, you knocked it out of the park on your first two picks. Sale was a good find at No. 11 and Barret Loux is really underrated.

I don’t think it was that we were averse to HS pitching early, it’s just that at 11 and 34 I think the clear best players on the board were Chris Sale and Barret Loux and at that point. With those two at the top of the draft the focus switched to hitting where we took a nice mix of upside HSers in Cabrera, Deglan, and Cecchini to go along with a couple of college guys who should hit in Morris and Segedin.

I also think this community is generally very bullish on high upside HS players (especially pitchers with good velo and little in the way of control - and these are players I have little interest in to begin with) and was eager to grab them earlier than they should really be going, which caused some players to drop where they were good value picks at that point (Cabrera, Cecchini, Skole). On Skole, I agree that he’d be a difficult sign but considering the Jays reported interest in spending big and the lack of large overslot picks to this point it should be feasible to fit him into the draft budget.

I disagree that Skole will be difficult to sign. Sure, he’ll cost over-slot, but crazy over-slot.

He’s quoted as saying that his main dream is to play pro ball. All he has is a football scholarship to GTech - he’ll have to walk on to the baseball team.

but NOT crazy over-slot

his brother is a star on the GTech baseball team, and he's only walking on cause he's a great football prospect too

His main dream might be to play pro ball, but that doesn’t mean he won’t be willing to delay it by a few years if he doesn’t get the money he wants now.

Just a hunch, but I think there might be a place for him on the baseball team.

But if he goes to GTech, he has to play football - that’s what his scholarship is. It’s quite risky to play FB and risk a major leg or shoulder injury, when your dream is “to play pro ball.” I’m sure that the Jays could sign him for under $500K.

sounds low

Don’t get me wrong, I think he’ll sign . . .but I’m guessing his signing bonus will be at least $750,000 and could approach seven figures.

Chad Jones played both football and baseball at LSU.

Skole is clearly good enough to play baseball.

generally, yeah

Although this year was going to be a weird one because of the college class being so weak.

Cabrera was a solid pick, although he was dropping in the draft before everybody realized that he might be the most signable prep hitter out there. Cecchini would’ve gone much higher if he had been healthy, but he’s still rehabbing and apparently wants a pretty hefty bonus to go pro now rather than to LSU.

Great draft

If the real draft goes that well everyone should be pleased

Thanks to everyone

Hey guys once again I want to thank everybody that was chatting in the Last Minute MOD. Everything went real well in there and it seemed to me that everybody was heard heard and we all pretty well agreed on all the picks as they were being made.

This would be a great draft for the Jays

Loux, Sale, Segedin & Morris should move quickly, I personally love Cecchini’s bat.

You can be patient with Skole and Cabrera as they develop-and Rowland is a solid prep arm.

And lastly you get the home-country product in Deglan who is also a very solid prospect in his own right.
