MOD 2010 LAST MINUTE BLUE JAYS

Hey guys it's the day of the draft, and it's a big day for our organization.  We have 9 picks today, here are my thoughts this morning as I look at the draft board.

Star-divide

With 9 picks, I want to have a huge day, one that will greatly improve our minor league system and one that will bring some excitement for our fans.  We obviously have to make a few safe picks especially with the picks we got as a result of not signing Paxton, Eliopoulos and Barrett from last years draft.  So here is what I'm looking at doing with each pick, let me know if there are any major objections or players you think should be included into last minute consideration.  Also these guy are listed in no particular order as I don't want other teams to no exactly what we are planing and if somebody drops unexpectedly we may very well ignore the list and select the guy that has dropped.

11th pick - Stetson Allie, Michael Choice, Josh Sale, Yasmani Grandal, Karsten Whitson

34th for scutaro, 38th for paxton, 41st for Barajas - We have to be safe with the Paxton pick, but here is a list of guys I'm looking at.  Loux, Cabrera, Ranaudo, Harvey, LeMarre, Parker, Solis, Gausman, Cecchini, Bettis, Paxton, Deglan, Jenkins

61st and 69th for eliopoulos -  have to be careful with the Elio pick guys I'm looking at in this range.  Aviles, Bedrosian, Deshields, Smelter, Kvasnicka, Ruffin, Swagerty, Rowland, Gibbs, Morris, Cisco, Wates, Murphy

80th, 93rd and 113th for barrett -  so we need to be careful with the Barrett pick but here is some guys I'm looking at in this range.  Dyson, Cunningham,  Lavisky, Leonard, Keeling, Rasmussen,  Munson, Ficociello, Eldemire, Chapman, Clarke, Hague, Olt, Coyle, Rupp, Rosin, Duke, Tepesch, Thompson, Waldrop, Culver, Klein,  Nelson, Den Dekker, Burgoon,

White Sox are taking Eliopoulos

at 63. So if you want him, it’d have to be 61.

Trying some misdirection

clearly it didn’t work.

At 34

look for Jenkins, but if Harvey, Ranaudo are around, one of them, I like Bettis at 38, and 41 a guy like LaMarre, Solis, or preferably Paxton

by daman316 on Jun 5, 2025 11:45 AM EDT reply actions

At 11

I would rank the picks as follows,

Josh Sale
Karsten Whitson
Deck Mcguire
Micheal Choice
Stetson Allie
Yasmani Grandal

I added Mcguire in there because I think he might be around

by daman316 on Jun 5, 2025 11:47 AM EDT reply actions

I’d take Choice over McGuire. Probably Allie too.

by metafour on Jun 5, 2025 12:16 PM EDT up reply actions

Jake Skole

I like him in the 2nd round.

He is flying up boards big time and is actually getting a lot of interest from us in real life.

Injured ankle slowed him early but he was destroying it in the Georgia HS playoffs. Two-sport star; plus defense/arm in CF with interesting power upside.

He’s a guy who could be a supplemental 1st in real life, but since he doesn’t have sustained internet hype I dont expect him to get as high as he will IRL.

by metafour on Jun 5, 2025 12:33 PM EDT reply actions

Alright guys thanks to those that contributed, continue to post here as our picks come closer. So I know who you guys are looking at as we approach our picks.

by Bouncer on Jun 5, 2025 12:50 PM EDT reply actions

Sounds good.

For 11 I doubt we’ll get who we all want as I think the players we like (Josh Sale and Whitson) will be valued higher by this community than real life. I could definitely see Grandal and Allie being the only two from your list available at 11, with Deck McGuire dropping, as he’s an obvious candidate for this community to not value highly. I think Cox might be there at 11 and if he is I don’t think we should be afraid to pop him there.

by GoJays7 on Jun 5, 2025 12:55 PM EDT up reply actions

damn this is going fast

Sale is gone, if Chris Sale is around, take him, but I don’t think he will, maybe karsten will still be there

by daman316 on Jun 5, 2025 1:06 PM EDT reply actions

Yes! Chris Sale please if he’s there. I’m a big fan.

by GoJays7 on Jun 5, 2025 1:06 PM EDT reply actions

I think the board should now be:

Chris Sale
Karsten Whitson
Michael Choice (not a huge fan)

by GoJays7 on Jun 5, 2025 1:07 PM EDT reply actions

I see Sale alot like Sowers

by Bouncer on Jun 5, 2025 1:07 PM EDT reply actions

I personally leaning towards Whitson at this point

by Bouncer on Jun 5, 2025 1:08 PM EDT reply actions

Sowers

doesn’t he throw 86 and is a finesse guy, Sale throws harder and has a nice change, think he might be better than Sowers

by daman316 on Jun 5, 2025 1:09 PM EDT reply actions

I’d be fine with Whitson, but Sale has very good stuff to go with excellent command

by GoJays7 on Jun 5, 2025 1:09 PM EDT reply actions

We’re up, I like Chris Sale at this point.

by GoJays7 on Jun 5, 2025 1:10 PM EDT reply actions

With Whitson gone I took Sale as he seems to be a guy that dropped in this draft

by Bouncer on Jun 5, 2025 1:11 PM EDT reply actions

so any ideas what kinda bonus Sale will get?

by Bouncer on Jun 5, 2025 1:13 PM EDT up reply actions

now that the Jays have a pitcher

you targeting a hitter for the next pick? or whoever is best available?

by daman316 on Jun 5, 2025 1:12 PM EDT reply actions

really just want the BPA available pitcher or hitter, not worried to much about specific positions either

by Bouncer on Jun 5, 2025 1:14 PM EDT up reply actions

mostly just want to keep the budget in line

by Bouncer on Jun 5, 2025 1:14 PM EDT up reply actions

If the real life Jays got Chris Sale at 11 I’d be pretty thrilled. Lefty with up to mid-90s heat, unorthodox delivery that is hard for hitters to read, and excellent command.

I’m sure he’s looking for a pretty decent bonus as he’s been consistently mentioned as a top 10 and possible top 5 candidate so he won’t be a cheap pick but as I haven’t heard any ridiculous bonus demands associated with him I would think he’s also not a huge overslot guy.

by GoJays7 on Jun 5, 2025 1:14 PM EDT reply actions

I agree nothing outrageous but a little over slot.

by Bouncer on Jun 5, 2025 1:16 PM EDT up reply actions

bonus

I don’t think it would be anything insane, maybe 3 mil, but nothing more than that

by daman316 on Jun 5, 2025 1:16 PM EDT up reply actions

34/38/41

I really like some of the college pitching that will hopefully be available there. Guys like Loux, Bettis, Hahn, and Seth Blair.

by GoJays7 on Jun 5, 2025 1:23 PM EDT reply actions

Cowart or Eibner

I think they would be a good choice if they last to our next pick

by daman316 on Jun 5, 2025 1:24 PM EDT reply actions

I like Eibner as a pitcher, not so much as a hitter (too many Ks). I like Cowart as a pitcher as well, does anybody know if he’s willing to pitch out of the gates or if he wants to be given a chance as a hitter first like Eibner?

by GoJays7 on Jun 5, 2025 1:25 PM EDT reply actions

I was just thinking Eibner if he drops, also Cowart is interesting.

by Bouncer on Jun 5, 2025 1:26 PM EDT reply actions

apperently cowart wants to hit

with pitching being a backup plan

by daman316 on Jun 5, 2025 1:26 PM EDT reply actions

Yeah, I don’t really like either that much as hitters though with so many picks I wouldn’t be averse to picking one of them up here as obviously they’d be pretty good value at that point.

by GoJays7 on Jun 5, 2025 1:27 PM EDT reply actions

who do you guys prefer Cowart or Eibner?

by Bouncer on Jun 5, 2025 1:28 PM EDT reply actions

Cowart just went so it’s Eibner now if he lasts

by Bouncer on Jun 5, 2025 1:29 PM EDT up reply actions

if they don't hit

they’ll pitch, I think the number one concern for these guys is getting to the majors

by daman316 on Jun 5, 2025 1:28 PM EDT reply actions

I think Jenkins could be a pretty tough sign as a QB recruit to Clemson or Baylor I believe

by Bouncer on Jun 5, 2025 1:30 PM EDT up reply actions

if Hahn drops

then pick him if Eibner is gone

by daman316 on Jun 5, 2025 1:31 PM EDT reply actions

Yeah, Tyrell Jenkins is definitely a tough sign and not all that polished, but there is undeniable upside. He wouldn’t be at the top of my list but I wouldn’t be opposed to taking him with a protected pick in the supplemental (whichever one isn’t the Paxton pick).

by GoJays7 on Jun 5, 2025 1:32 PM EDT reply actions

I like the college pitchers in in this order
Loux
Blair
Bettis
Hahn

I like them all but I think Loux has an edge on them all for sure.

by GoJays7 on Jun 5, 2025 1:33 PM EDT reply actions

Well Bettis is gone.

by GoJays7 on Jun 5, 2025 1:34 PM EDT reply actions

Bettis is gone as well

by daman316 on Jun 5, 2025 1:34 PM EDT reply actions

I think Loux I think worst case scenario is he will become a good bullpen arm with his power stuff

by Bouncer on Jun 5, 2025 1:35 PM EDT reply actions

any bats interest guys at this point?

by Bouncer on Jun 5, 2025 1:36 PM EDT reply actions

so is Loux

our guy? I still like Hahn, but Loux is good as well

by daman316 on Jun 5, 2025 1:36 PM EDT reply actions

we have to go safe at 38 I think which is the Paxton pick

by Bouncer on Jun 5, 2025 1:36 PM EDT reply actions

Yeah, I like him best as all of those guys posted similar BB rates but he has the very clear advantage in Ks. Also, Hahn has had some arm troubles down the stretch.

Yordy Cabrera is still available as well.

Don’t like LaMarre, too little polish at this point. Strikes out a lot and that’s not a good indicator for a college hitter.

by GoJays7 on Jun 5, 2025 1:37 PM EDT reply actions

should we take cabrera

then loux, I think Loux might still be around after our next pick

by daman316 on Jun 5, 2025 1:38 PM EDT reply actions

We’re up in the supplemental.

I don’t love Cabrera, I’d rather make sure we get Loux

by GoJays7 on Jun 5, 2025 1:38 PM EDT reply actions

I thinking maybe Cabrera at 38 should be a safe sign

by Bouncer on Jun 5, 2025 1:38 PM EDT reply actions

I might like Deglan better but Cabrera has legit power that I can dig (though I really don’t like guys who struggle to make contact and Cabrera looks to be that sort of player).

by GoJays7 on Jun 5, 2025 1:39 PM EDT reply actions

i don't love cabrera either

but he’d be an upside guy, and being an old high school kid, would be a decent risk and not cost a lot

by daman316 on Jun 5, 2025 1:40 PM EDT reply actions

As an old HS player he arguably has more leverage as he can go to college and be draftable sooner, but I still think he’s probably signable at this point.

by GoJays7 on Jun 5, 2025 1:40 PM EDT reply actions

yeah I think in terms of signing Cabrera is pretty safe at this point and he does have a high upside

by Bouncer on Jun 5, 2025 1:41 PM EDT reply actions

I also like

Deander Smelter with our last sup pick, or 2 round pick, maybe him and Hunter Morris in the second round

by daman316 on Jun 5, 2025 1:42 PM EDT reply actions

Don’t love Smelter, very little control at this point.

by GoJays7 on Jun 5, 2025 1:42 PM EDT reply actions

Cabrera

it’s a good pick

by daman316 on Jun 5, 2025 1:43 PM EDT reply actions

So what next at 41 Bettis Hahn LeMarre?

by Bouncer on Jun 5, 2025 1:43 PM EDT reply actions

I like Deglan at 41 if it’s possible to snag him there.

by GoJays7 on Jun 5, 2025 1:43 PM EDT reply actions

that'd be good

if he’s gone, then Hahn

by daman316 on Jun 5, 2025 1:43 PM EDT up reply actions

Bettis is gone.

by GoJays7 on Jun 5, 2025 1:43 PM EDT reply actions

I think Jedd Gyorko will hit. Where he’ll play defensively is another matter altogether.

by GoJays7 on Jun 5, 2025 1:44 PM EDT reply actions

Hahn and Deglan is the consenus?

by Bouncer on Jun 5, 2025 1:44 PM EDT reply actions

Don’t think he’ll last that long, but if we could get him there that’d be great.

So what’s the board look like?

I like Deglan over Hahn I think.

by GoJays7 on Jun 5, 2025 1:45 PM EDT reply actions

Hahn

if he’s around in the 2nd, we’d have to take him at that point

by daman316 on Jun 5, 2025 1:47 PM EDT reply actions

Hahn

just gone

by hrv1978 on Jun 5, 2025 1:48 PM EDT up reply actions

He just got popped.

by GoJays7 on Jun 5, 2025 1:48 PM EDT reply actions

for the 2nd round

We should target
Hahn
Hunter Morris
Jesse biddle
Ryan Lamarre
Gyorko

by daman316 on Jun 5, 2025 1:48 PM EDT reply actions

Sorry guys I found Hahn to be a bit of a risk due to injuries to draft in the supp

by Bouncer on Jun 5, 2025 1:49 PM EDT reply actions

I like some HS bats that might last from the supplemental area here - Vettleson, Yelich, Cecchini, and Bryant.

I like the HS pitcher Vanegas but he’s going to require a big bonus to sign as he’s solidly committed to Stanford I believe.

by GoJays7 on Jun 5, 2025 1:50 PM EDT reply actions

What about Cecchini?

by Bouncer on Jun 5, 2025 1:51 PM EDT reply actions

Cecchini

What position is he? Not that it should matter when drafting but I’m just asking.

by hrv1978 on Jun 5, 2025 1:54 PM EDT up reply actions

thirdbase

by Bouncer on Jun 5, 2025 1:54 PM EDT up reply actions

what about that catcher from minnesota

rumoured to be moving in the 1st this year, mike kvashinoky (something mike that

by daman316 on Jun 5, 2025 1:51 PM EDT reply actions

Kvasnicka he is very interesting as well

by Bouncer on Jun 5, 2025 1:52 PM EDT up reply actions

He’s been injured for a year so it’s definitely a wildcard pick but he was great last year and is solidly ranked by BA despite the injury.

by GoJays7 on Jun 5, 2025 1:52 PM EDT reply actions

Mike Kvasnicka,

good risk at this point

by daman316 on Jun 5, 2025 1:52 PM EDT reply actions

That would be our second catcher at this point in the draft, Deglan is also a catcher

by Bouncer on Jun 5, 2025 1:54 PM EDT reply actions

That's why I would have

taken Hahn with the Deglan pick and that way taken the chance that one or both of deglan and kvasnicka would be available.

by hrv1978 on Jun 5, 2025 1:56 PM EDT up reply actions

What about Garin Cecchini hs 3b

by Bouncer on Jun 5, 2025 1:55 PM EDT reply actions

i forgot about

Chevez Clarke

by daman316 on Jun 5, 2025 1:56 PM EDT reply actions

I think BPA is the best approach but I will say the Jays have a ton of catching prospects in the minors. It’s going to be difficult to fit them all in.

I’ve got no problem with Cecchini. I’m not a huge Chevez Clarke fan in the second due to his lack of power.

by GoJays7 on Jun 5, 2025 1:57 PM EDT reply actions

what number is the next pick

by daman316 on Jun 5, 2025 1:58 PM EDT reply actions

61 and 69 we have to watch the 69th pick

by Bouncer on Jun 5, 2025 1:59 PM EDT up reply actions

Christian Yelich
Drew Vettleson
Garin Cecchini
AJ Vanegas (very tough sign)
Kris Bryant
Hunter Morris
Aaron Shipman
Rob Segedin
Kyle Blair
Addison Reed
Drew Smyly
David Filak
Marcus Knecht
Robby Rowland
Drew Cisco
Scott Frazier

by GoJays7 on Jun 5, 2025 2:01 PM EDT reply actions

I also like DeSmelter and Aviles

by Bouncer on Jun 5, 2025 2:02 PM EDT reply actions

DeAndre Smelter

by hrv1978 on Jun 5, 2025 2:03 PM EDT up reply actions

Smelter has very little control at this point and will be costly as a HS guy with a big arm. I’d rather just let him go to college.

I don’t know too much about Aviles to be honest. Is there a particular reason you like him other than arm strength as a HS guy?

by GoJays7 on Jun 5, 2025 2:05 PM EDT reply actions

I am leanign toward Cecchini

by Bouncer on Jun 5, 2025 2:06 PM EDT reply actions

I only have Yelich above him so I don’t really have a problem with the pick. Yelich doesn’t seem to have optimal power for a 1B so it’s not like he’s a crazy good prospect.

by GoJays7 on Jun 5, 2025 2:07 PM EDT reply actions

I like Hunter Morris a lot. That guy should definitely hit. Would have no problem with him being the pick at all.

by GoJays7 on Jun 5, 2025 2:09 PM EDT reply actions

gotta go Cecchini if available

by hrv1978 on Jun 5, 2025 2:10 PM EDT reply actions

My board at this point is Cecchini Smelter Morris Rowland

by Bouncer on Jun 5, 2025 2:11 PM EDT reply actions

Cecchini almost here

by hrv1978 on Jun 5, 2025 2:14 PM EDT reply actions

I think at 69 we shoudl go with a college guy as it’s an easier sign so probably Morris or any other guys?

by Bouncer on Jun 5, 2025 2:14 PM EDT reply actions

I think Morris should be the top target for pick 69.

by GoJays7 on Jun 5, 2025 2:15 PM EDT reply actions

I agree………….nice draft so far for our Jays

by hrv1978 on Jun 5, 2025 2:15 PM EDT reply actions

Crossing my fingers that Yelich drops to 80.

Here’s how my board for 80 looks at this point.

Christian Yelich
Kris Bryant
Aaron Shipman
Rob Segedin
Kyle Blair
Drew Smyly
David Filak
Robby Rowland
Drew Cisco
Scott Frazier

by GoJays7 on Jun 5, 2025 2:22 PM EDT reply actions

So who we looking at with number 80?

by Bouncer on Jun 5, 2025 2:22 PM EDT reply actions

I really like Rob Segedin if we’re looking for another guy who should hit. He has had a great junior season and shown fantastic plate discipline (20Ks in like 210 or so ABs).

by GoJays7 on Jun 5, 2025 2:26 PM EDT reply actions

strike that

maybe not, yelish would be good and kvasnicka

by daman316 on Jun 5, 2025 2:28 PM EDT reply actions

Kvasnicka is gone I believe.

by GoJays7 on Jun 5, 2025 2:30 PM EDT reply actions

Yes

Kvas is gone

by hrv1978 on Jun 5, 2025 2:31 PM EDT reply actions

I like CUnningham Segedin Smyly or Rowland

by Bouncer on Jun 5, 2025 2:31 PM EDT reply actions

Of those four I definitely like Segedin best. Definitely should hit based on his performance this year and considering that we went risky with Cabrera, Deglan and Cecchini earlier in the draft not a bad idea to get another college bat that should hit in Deglan.

by GoJays7 on Jun 5, 2025 2:33 PM EDT reply actions

I do agree I think going for more college guys that are closer or more proven might be smart for our next 3 picks

by Bouncer on Jun 5, 2025 2:35 PM EDT up reply actions

Which hitters and Which Pitchers do you guys like at this point?

by Bouncer on Jun 5, 2025 2:34 PM EDT reply actions

Segedin

by hrv1978 on Jun 5, 2025 2:36 PM EDT reply actions

I like Segedin or Yelich here.

by GoJays7 on Jun 5, 2025 2:36 PM EDT reply actions

sorry for delay guys

by Bouncer on Jun 5, 2025 2:39 PM EDT reply actions

Two more picks 93rd and 113th. Who are th pitcher and hitters we like at this point I think we should look at college guys now with out riskier highschool picks early

by Bouncer on Jun 5, 2025 2:41 PM EDT reply actions

No worries.

I think it might be a good idea to go with an arm at 93 to get a little balance in our draft. I like Kyle Blair as a college pitcher at that pick but if we want to go the HS route I like Rowland and Cisco.

by GoJays7 on Jun 5, 2025 2:41 PM EDT reply actions

I am looking at guys like Smyly Dyson Blair Champman Nelson Tepesch in terms of college arms

by Bouncer on Jun 5, 2025 2:44 PM EDT reply actions

I don’t think we should be opposed to taking a HS pitcher here if they’re the BPA. I think we have a very strong pitching base at the top of our draft in Chris Sale and Barret Loux. If we could get a polished guy like Cisco or Rowland I think they’d be strong moves.

by GoJays7 on Jun 5, 2025 2:46 PM EDT reply actions

Yes I do like Rowland I would consider him still as well if he’s there at our next pick

by Bouncer on Jun 5, 2025 2:48 PM EDT up reply actions

As far as bats I looking at Cunningham Eldemire, Holt, Olt, Thompson Hague Rupp and den dekker

by Bouncer on Jun 5, 2025 2:46 PM EDT reply actions

What do we think at this point Rowland or Blair or someone else?

by Bouncer on Jun 5, 2025 2:49 PM EDT reply actions

Kyle Blair
Drew Smyly
Robby Rowland
Drew Cisco

I’m good with any of them really.

by GoJays7 on Jun 5, 2025 2:50 PM EDT reply actions

I think I leaning towardss Rowland with this pick and then a college pitcher with 113

by Bouncer on Jun 5, 2025 2:52 PM EDT reply actions

blair

looking like he’ll be around

by daman316 on Jun 5, 2025 2:52 PM EDT reply actions

ok we go with Blair or Smyly with next pick if either are there

by Bouncer on Jun 5, 2025 2:55 PM EDT reply actions

So what do we all think of this draft?

by Bouncer on Jun 5, 2025 2:56 PM EDT reply actions

I’d be a little surprised to see either drop to 113 but if they do that’s awesome and I’d be all over them.

I like the draft. Good balance between hitters and pitchers, prep and college ranks. I don’t think we took anybody that has no idea how to play baseball (my problem with a lot of HS guys) which I think is always a good thing.

by GoJays7 on Jun 5, 2025 2:58 PM EDT reply actions

Sale, Loux, Cabrera, Deglan, Cecchini, Segedin, Rowland

by Bouncer on Jun 5, 2025 2:58 PM EDT reply actions

oh yes I Hunter Morris

by Bouncer on Jun 5, 2025 3:00 PM EDT up reply actions

Good chance of these guys signing without it being to expensive

by daman316 on Jun 5, 2025 3:00 PM EDT reply actions

Cunningham

is he still around?

by daman316 on Jun 5, 2025 3:01 PM EDT reply actions

if he is

him instead of Blair

by daman316 on Jun 5, 2025 3:02 PM EDT up reply actions

Just got popped

by GoJays7 on Jun 5, 2025 3:02 PM EDT reply actions

can somebody announce the pick I have to go to washroom so if I’m not back Blair is the first choice Smyly is 2nd

by Bouncer on Jun 5, 2025 3:07 PM EDT reply actions

Sure, and if they’re both gone?

by GoJays7 on Jun 5, 2025 3:08 PM EDT reply actions

I like Sean Coyle, HS SS

by GoJays7 on Jun 5, 2025 3:12 PM EDT reply actions

ok I back

by Bouncer on Jun 5, 2025 3:12 PM EDT reply actions

Also like Drew Cisco, HS RHP

by GoJays7 on Jun 5, 2025 3:13 PM EDT reply actions

where did Skole go in this draft?

by daman316 on Jun 5, 2025 3:14 PM EDT reply actions

I don’t think he did yet

by Bouncer on Jun 5, 2025 3:14 PM EDT reply actions

That’s a great point, wouldn’t mind Skole at all!

by GoJays7 on Jun 5, 2025 3:15 PM EDT reply actions

you're right, still around

I don’t know a lot about him, i’ve just seen him high in a lot of mocks

by daman316 on Jun 5, 2025 3:16 PM EDT reply actions

do we put SKole at the top of the lis tthen ahead of Blair and Smyly?

by Bouncer on Jun 5, 2025 3:16 PM EDT reply actions

Josh Skole of correct?

by Bouncer on Jun 5, 2025 3:17 PM EDT reply actions

I’m OK with that, seems like great value in the third round as long as he’s signable (I believe he has a scholarship to play football).

by GoJays7 on Jun 5, 2025 3:17 PM EDT reply actions

sorry he is 2b for georgia tech

by Bouncer on Jun 5, 2025 3:18 PM EDT reply actions

Skole it is

This year, that award might go to high school outfielder Jake Skole. There are a few things that had kept him out of the discussion until recently. The biggest is that he’s a two-sport star — any team considering him would have to sign him away from playing football and baseball at Georgia Tech. It’s a large task, considering he’d get to play baseball with his brother, Matt, for a year

well Skole is a risky pick but with a bigger budget maybe we get it done

I think he’s strong value at 113. I do like Smyly but with Chris Sale and Loux at the top of the draft I think there’s plenty of strength in the pitching of this group already.
