First Third Of Season Regrades
The first two months of the season have gone by. Prospects have broken out, and others have busted. How do you guys feel about prospects this time of the season. We've done a few of these over the past two years, so let's do another. Suggest guys that are interesting, and see how other people rate them. This time I want more discussion on players. Please respond to the specific player with the grade, and rec the grade along with a +1 for grades you agree with. It would be a lot more organized if each player only received a grade once, with +1s AND recs indicating what you agree with.
And don't forget, start discussion on guys. I want to see this fanpost getting 500+ replies. At least.

I do love his improved groundball rate, but really the walks and k-rate prevent me from bumping him up any further. I could definitely see a ‘B+’, no shame in that.

No question Mesoraco has made progress this year with the bat. However, for me he’s the definition of a “new toy” prospect that I tend to overrate. If I look up at the end of the season and Mesoraco puts up the same numbers at AA as A+ and the scouting reports match the numbers, then I see myself giving him a B/B+ rating.

I think the increased velocity and awesome strikeout rate have moved him up significantly. He struggled to command the faster FB early in the year, but that seems to be coming around lately.

Double Standard??
Why should Minor have to replicate his AA dominance in AAA to earn an A- grade when virtually every other Top 75 pitching prospect would not warrant a “wait till AAA” caveat to the extent that they had dominated AA like Minor has?
His body of work at AA so far this year is far more relevant than what he did at college and his stuff has improved.

Personal preference
I usually don’t like giving out grades like A- unless Im completely confidant they can be a top 7 or 8 pitcher in the minors. With Minor his improvement is astounding, however I would just like to see if he carries the same strikeout punch to a higher level. I am not doubting he can. Maybe I should also say I save my A- and A grades for guys like Gallardo, Strasburg, Matusz, Kershaw, Price, etc. etc. B+ is a rock solid grade in my book.

I think on my offseason list the A- and above grades went as far as 14 or 15, then you were into the B+ range. Minor’s looked great, like a totally different pitcher. I’d say B+ now but if he can hold the increased velocity all year…then it’s going to be hard to not make him an A-.

everything about this kid screams star…just taking in this years numbers, he’s batting over .300 against lefties and just under 50% of his total hits have been for extra bases (12 doubles, 3 triples and 10 hr’s) decent bb/k ratio, and over a .390 obp…the last few years the only real question about him was if he would tap into that power potential and he sure has.

Re:
Do you have him on par with the J-Ups, Heywards, Wieters, Strasburgs, etc.? I generally think of the solid A guys being the best of the best — combinations of talent and production.
I like Trout but it doesn’t change the fact that he’s playing LF, 24 guys were drafted ahead of him last year, and, personally, I question how much the power will play at higher levels. He’s still an A- for me.
by Dfarth on Jun 4, 2025 1:27 AM EDT up reply actions
trout
As far as combinations of tools and productions go, it doesn’t get much better than this. Trout is super toolsy and his production is staggering. It’s hard to believe that the guy is hitting .375 and his IsoP is still close to .200.
I think he’ll be able to play CF, sometimes it’s just easier to break in a guy through an easier to play position. As he approaches the majors, I’d be surprised if he doesn’t get some serious reps in CF.
The two guys that you could compare Trout to are Upton and Heyward, the outfielders. And Trout’s line beats both of them in Low A by a healthy margin. He profiles to be a true impact player. I’m not saying that he’ll be a grade A prospect at season’s end, but if the season ended today, he’d be a Grade A guy. Hell of a player, extremely hard to find anything wrong with him.
by mrkupe on Jun 4, 2025 1:42 AM EDT up reply actions
Fair Enough
I agree that the numbers look great but I just don’t think they are sustainable. I’m not a huge slave to BABIP but his current one (.431) is way way up there. And, much in the way that you are skeptical of Nick Franklin’s power as he moves up, I think that Trout’s XBHs will take a significant dive as he goes up the ladder. I wonder, how much his speed has to do with all those 2B and 3B? Put all of those things together and he’s definitely still a decent hitter — but he’s a guy who’s not quite an A for me.
That said, it looks like I was wrong and he has been playing some center (I was basing the LF thing off of MiLB’s listed position) so that obviously is a boost. If he stays in CF and maintains his current production, which I’m skeptical of, then he could definitely turn into an A prospect for me.
by Dfarth on Jun 4, 2025 1:54 AM EDT up reply actions
more trout
Yeah, his BABIP is high, and yeah, it will come down. But then again, he’s hitting .373 with a 1.000+ OPS right now, and when guys hit for really high averages, you can expect some pretty gaudy BABIPs in any case.
His speed probably has something to do with the 3Bs, but there’s a reason why we look at XBHs as a total - the total tends to be less deceptive than the sum of its parts. Guys aren’t just going to typically let a guy take second on a hit . . .and he did, it would probably be on an error and not scored as such.
He was a B+ prospect last year (I had him at No. 52 I think) after wrecking rookie ball. The only real question on him was whether or not he’d hit for power. This year, moving to full season ball at age 18, he’s actually been even better, and has significantly improved his power production. Absolutely exceptional prospect.
by mrkupe on Jun 4, 2025 3:17 AM EDT up reply actions
He's played CF the whole 2010 season and last season (only 4 games last year in RK level was he used as a LF/RF)
He grades out as a CF, and is not being thought of as a corner outfielder within the org. One of his weaknesses is a supposed average arm so his profile (speed, jump and instincts) actually work better as a CF. I really wouldn’t expect to see him play anywhere else, he is very much seen as the Angels CF of the future by people in the org (and is being used as such).

Other people have addressed the league thing
So I’ll draw attention to something else. Trout’s line isn’t just better than what Heyward posted . . .his OPS is more than 100 points higher.
Tools are awesome, performance even better, appears to have no major weaknesses in his game, projects to be an All Star player in center field. And if your argument is that he can’t be an A because of his competition, think again . . .he would not be the first Low A player to get an A.

I think I’d go with a B+, but I may have some bias. He is mired in the midst of a big slump right now. The bigger issue is, just how much playable power does he have? Thinking back to some pre-draft reports, one concern was that he occasionally slapped at balls and thus, his raw power didn’t necessarily translate. He’s shown the discipline and good glove, though, so I think, for now, I’d overlook the power issue, but it is becoming more concerning.

A lot of these grades are getting way too aggressive IMO. Do people realize that Hanson only got a B+ even after his insane AFL in 2008? An A- is one of the top 5-7 pitching prospects in baseball. Being good in low-A isn’t good enough to get you to that level IMO.

Neither do I
I just think people lose sight of how good an A- guy is supposed to be. Turner is a very good prospect, don’t get me wrong, but I need to see a lot more from a guy in low A ball to go that high. We have no idea if he can handle a full seasons workload, we have no idea how he’ll do in his second time through the league, and we don’t know how well his stuff carries late into games (hasn’t gone more than 5.1 yet). And while he’s been quite good, he certainly hasn’t been completely dominate. A solid B+, but I need to see him keep it up for at least the rest of this year with a promotion to high A before I raise that grade.
by nixa37 on Jun 3, 2025 11:23 PM EDT up reply actions
Oh FWIW
I’d take Teheran over him in a heartbeat right now and I wouldn’t give Teheran an A- either. Teheran is the same age, just as dominate, similar stuff, higher level, going deeper in games, and I still wouldn’t put him in the A- range yet.

In any case, I tend to think that Bumgarner really can’t win. If he’s awesome, he’s fluky and won’t be able to maintain it. If he’s not, it’s his “real self” coming out. Everything that’s good is a lie. Everything that’s bad is the truth.

Has anybody actually looked at his numbers this year? H/IP over 1, a HR given up every 5 innings, lots of flyballs given up, 6.63 strikeouts per 9 innings. can't really agree
Like, I’m happy to see that he’s actually pitching again, and maybe I can even buy that you’re not looking too hard at the results right now. But giving him a grade B is basically like saying that everything bad is getting thrown out the window, and that you’re giving him a total blank check for this year. For a guy who profiles as having No. 3 type upside?

I didn't say he was refined
I said he can really hit. Will he need to improve upon his plate discipline to reach his offensive potential? Sure he will. But he’s a terrific hitter, and it’s got little to do with his swing. He gets praise for squaring up the ball nicely, driving the ball to all fields, making contact with pretty much anything in the zone.
I’m pretty confused by your comment about his “pretty swing”. I think I’m pretty strongly on record in saying that I see little relationship between how a player’s swing looks and how productive that player will be. You, on the other hand, seem to go out of your way to talk up the importance of the appearance of swing mechanics. I do not agree with this opinion, and trying to portray me as having such sentiments to give yourself something to argue against is unnecessary.

Personally
When I see Dominguez’s hitting record and skills as a player, I see Joe Crede - not too bad. A middle of the pack bat at 3b with a VERY solid glove
With Vitters I see perhaps, only perhaps, a tad more potential with the bat but, without the glove - a big difference for me.
I’d give Dominguez a B, and begrudgingly give Vitters a B as well- but I like Dominguez’s chances better
by casejud on Jun 5, 2025 1:36 AM EDT up reply actions
not sure I see Crede in Dominguez
Dominguez can’t really hit, but he’s got a decent eye at the plate. Crede actually had a ton of offensive potential, but held himself back with awful plate discipline.
Actually, Crede is a funny guy to bring up here . . .Dominguez has his glove but not his bat, while Vitters has definite similarities with the bat but not the glove.
by mrkupe on Jun 5, 2025 1:56 AM EDT up reply actions
OK
Im not going to be able to convince you, Dominguez hit fine in the FSL, and is hitting fine this year as well- despite a low average
i will say this, Crede was worse in an easier league at age 19 and had a worse season than Dominguez at age 21 in AA.
Sure he developed as a hitter by the time he was 24 in AAA but, Dominguez is on that path as well.
I really think Dominguez and Vitters are similar hitting talents but, we’ll just have to wait and see I guess.
Not mad at you, just asking, but why do you want to say Vitters was so much better when he didnt hiot as well in the same league last year?
Not really sure what Fredrick was getting at with the “pretty swing” thing but, there isnt as much EVIDENCE that shows Vitters is better as a hitter so, maybe its just a subjective thing - wehich is okay too I guess.
by casejud on Jun 5, 2025 2:15 AM EDT up reply actions
I didn't say he was better
I don’t think this is the first time you’ve thought I’ve said this when I didn’t. I think I made it perfectly clear that Dominguez is ahead of Vitters developmentally . . .you can tell, because Dominguez has generally succeeded at a level one year ahead of Vitters doing so.
Dominguez was better in the FSL in 2009 than Vitters was - I didn’t argue that, and based on my observation about their respective development paths, you can understand why I might even expect that. But Vitters in the FSL in 2010 was better than Dominguez in the FSL in 2009 . . .it’s just unfortunate that the Cubs decided to be the Cubs.
by mrkupe on Jun 5, 2025 2:24 AM EDT up reply actions
I don't see it
-He’s a worse defender than Dominguez
-He’s been playing a level lower at the same age and experience until his recent promotion to AA
-He has an awful walk rate
-He has similar (maybe a bit worse) power
His hit tool is really the only edge that he has.
by jar75 on Jun 4, 2025 9:08 PM EDT up reply actions
okay
Yeah, Dominguez beats him with the glove. Don’t really care about the level thing . . .Vitters has been excellent when not pushed aggressively, Dominguez hasn’t been a “wow” hitter since 2008 (and even then only in Greensboro, an exceptionally hitter friendly park).
Simply put, I think one will hit, I don’t think the other one will. I haven’t seen anything out of Dominguez in a year and a half now that would make me think he’s going to hit. If I stretch it back further, he’s only really ever hit well as a pro in Greensboro. I think Vitters will be able to hit - maybe the Cubs will screw him up by pushing him too hard, but I definitely think he’s got the ability to be a much more effective offensive presence than Dominguez, even if he has to move a bit more slowly to realize that potential. That’s not necessarily a bad thing - ideally they all end up in the same place anyways.
by mrkupe on Jun 5, 2025 12:29 AM EDT up reply actions
Um, Kupe
Dominguez hit as well as Vitters in the same league and same age last season - like, quite a bit better. Even Josh going back to the FSL this season and perorming far better this year - he still wasn’t that much better than Domingues there last season.
Not saying you are wrong but, there really isn’rt any real EVIDENCE that Vitters is a substantially better hitter- neither has done anything at AA yet.
Id say to me it looks like 2 guys with the potential to be average bats at 3b in the big leagues and one has an outstanding glove and one doesn’t. Just my opinion.
by casejud on Jun 5, 2025 1:43 AM EDT up reply actions
I think that was my point
Vitters is slightly behind Dominguez developmentally, due to plate discipline issues. I think he’s coming along reasonably well. Considering their ages, I’m still looking more with an eye towards what they can be rather than what they are - and Vitters has him beat there.
I’d say Vitters has the potential to be better than an average bat at 3B. I don’t think Dominguez will be more than average.
Basically,I tend to think Dominguez will ultimately end up within a pretty close range of expected outcomes. Vitters has a much wider range of outcomes, some of them better than Dominguez, some of them worse. Everything I’ve seen on Vitters tells me that he is a much better pure hitter than Dominguez, but Dominguez does have more skills for now.
by mrkupe on Jun 5, 2025 1:52 AM EDT up reply actions
I'd have to disagree
Again, Dominguez showed just as much with the bat as Vitters last season in the FSL, at the same age. The surerficial disadvantage was that he didn’t get to back there this year like Vitters did.
.
No0t that I think, tjhat Domionguez’s bat is anything special but, there are some positives to his season at AA - he’s hitting for some power, taking some walks, and playing the hell out of 3b.
I don’t see how Vitters has any advantage when he hasn’t even been productive in AA yet.
I do see your point as Vitters has put the bat on the ball a bit better in his entirety as a minor leaguer but, I think you are selling Dominguez’s potential short and If he just reppeated the FSL this season he’d be having a HELL of a seasonthere and perceptions would be different.
by casejud on Jun 5, 2025 2:06 AM EDT up reply actions
not really
Unless the guy was clearly overmatched by his league or he is annihilating the league, I don’t really look upon repeating said league as a good thing.
That being said, just to be sure, I did run his line through the Minor League Splits calculator to see how he’d be hitting at Jupiter this year. Dominguez’ AA line converts to .251/.336/.449 . . .I don’t think we’d be THAT excited. I’m not saying that he can’t hit, or that he won’t improve . . .but I haven’t really seen anybody in a position to know who seems to think that he will.
by mrkupe on Jun 5, 2025 2:14 AM EDT up reply actions
Kinda . . .
Supports what I am saying - that he’s about as good of a hitting talent as Josh Vitters. Thats about exactly as well as Vitters hit before thier callup.
Im sure they have thier reasons but, teams are so goofy. It’d be nice if both these 20 year olds could just play a full season in the FSL and then we could just SEE who is better.
I know we go back and forth on ARL but, nearly EVERYONE who is a solid player at AA at age 20 improves - and they usiually become major leaguers - and especially if they are solid gloves at a good position. There really isnt any logical reason to think he WONT improve.
by casejud on Jun 5, 2025 2:21 AM EDT up reply actions
small difference
Vitters put up his OPS with a .291/.350/.445 line . . .again, Dominguez has better skills, but Vitters is clearly the better pure hitter. Scouting reports reflect that (I don’t think I’ve seen anybody yet grade Dominguez higher than a future 55 hitter, and for the most part it’s been 50s), and the numbers reflect that too.
Yeah, they both deserve more development time. I just think people are really ripping Vitters for no particularly good reason other than that it’s fashionable to rip on a guy who needs to walk more. He’s not even a free swinger type . . .his strikeout rate is very low, and he’s praised for not swinging at pitches outside the strike zone. Unfortunately, he just makes a lot of contact . . .lesser hitters would swing through and still be alive in the count, while Vitters might hit the ball right to a fielder. Working counts and taking strikes to wait for a better pitch is something Vitters needs to work on, but as far as having the goods that will make a guy money, he’s got nothing to worry about there.

You wanna gear something CRAZY?
and Im sure you’ve suspected I may be crazy anyways, lol, thats ok.
Point is this: Id be willinmg to bet that if you put two similar players - say, age, production, positon and compare thier strikouts - the player with more strikouts will have a BETTER career.
I’m willing to do a study on it and truly believe it. I believe than more players fail because they dont make enough solid contact than because they K too much.

he needs to refine his changeup and curve, and is a #1, possibly an ace. He is having trouble early on because the AA hitters arent chasing what the A ball hitters were, which is understandable. He needs more time in AA(and, honestly, the people who thought he’d dominate AA early on were hoping, not thinking), but his future is no doubt in the rotation…

that's, um, a little rosy right now
I don’t think the best way to describe his struggles is something to the effect of, “If they weren’t so good, he’d be fine!”
He has sucked this year, about as much as a guy could without contracting Steve Blass disease or being secretly injured. Let’s not mince words. We definitely shouldn’t be saying “No big deal, he’s a #1 starter in the making!” right now.
by mrkupe on Jun 4, 2025 12:40 AM EDT up reply actions
wasnt trying to make excuses
but in a way, that is why he is struggling. The pitch that would strike guys out is being taken for a ball. He throws more pitches, which leads to more walks/possibility of hits. It is his job to adjust, and if he doesnt… well… it wont be good. But that is why he is struggling.
The #1 and possible ace talk is his potential. Do you think it has changed after two rough months at AA? I dont

not stupid
but at this point you are downgrading him. it is fine if you think this 3rd of a season justifies a true downgrade. i just think (hope maybe) that most people are changing players grades based on this 3rd of the season. if this 3rd of the season warrants a downgrade in your mind, fine. but re-hashing old debates is pointless. just find the old threads and comment there.

whatever
Not everybody thought Lyles was awesome, which may be surprising and/or disappointing to you. I don’t think many if any have downgraded him. I haven’t, so I’d appreciate it if you wouldn’t act like I have - at this point you mostly come off as the sort who isn’t going to be happy unless we’re all calling him one of the top few pitching prospects in baseball, and while you’re not going to get that out of me, I think I’ve been fair enough in my evaluation process, and I’d appreciate it if nothing else, you acknowledged that much.
I was under the impression that the point of this thread was to put our own opinions in, based on our own preseason grades, not “what we think John would grade this guy” based on John’s grade. Sorry that the answers aren’t as pleasing to you as you would like them to be.

Will Inman
Do you think he’s the next Will Inman? Just asking because there is precedence there - exactly as great of numbers to this point but fell apart.
Nothing at to do with your ratings- Im fine with them- more of a discussion point. I like it better when somebody just says that somebody will FAIL, as long as the reasoning is sound. Because the better we get at this stuff that is what we are really talking about.
To be honest I have no real idea if Lyles will suceed in the show or not but, I cantt see anything statistically not to like - but I recognize ther is more to it than that.

Too low for me
Solid power and good contact from a 20 year old in AAA with a good bit of projection left. I think you have to give him a B+
by nixa37 on Jun 4, 2025 12:05 AM EDT up reply actions
he's got a good bat
but he’s still a 1B, and unless your entire offensive game is flawless and has elite upside, it’s not enough to make you an elite prospect. You’ve also got to remember, a B is an extremely solid grade for a prospect, and the difference between B and B+ is very minimal.
Adoptive parent of Kyle Nicholson
by gore51 on Jun 4, 2025 12:10 AM EDT up reply actions
Who said he was an elite prospect?
I don’t consider a B+ to be at the elite level. Very good to be sure, but either a limited ceiling or a red flag or two. Freeman probably is a bit limited on upside because of his position, but he looks like a good bet to be a solid player at worst. I agree a B is an extremely solid grade, but I just think Freeman is more than a solid prospect.

From what I understand a B+ prospect gets to an allstar game or two at his peak and I don’t see it with Freeman so I’ll stick to a B here.
Honestly I never understood why he gets the love he does. The only thing I really see going for him is his age relative to level. He had a nice run in Rome/Myrtle Beach with an inflated BABIP. He doesn’t walk all that much and while he doesn’t K much either, his AVG doesn’t look like it’ll carry him to a better than decent OBP for a 1B.
by i r noobie on Jun 4, 2025 2:24 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions
I love the lack of consistency here
Morrison is a B+/A-, but Freeman is a straight B? Freeman’s Rome/MB run was BABIP fueled (.352 and .338 respectively), but Morrison’s best season (.372 BABIP) wasn’t? You also don’t mention power, where the two are close currently, but Freeman projects to add more.
I can understand having Morrison over Freeman, but having a grade and a half separating them seems strange to me.
by nixa37 on Jun 4, 2025 11:33 PM EDT up reply actions
Couldn't agree more
Ots hard to jusge them because Freeman is in AAA when Morrosn was in A+ ball, age wise but, funny thing is that despite freeman getting pushed fastwer and playing at some tough places to hit- his raw numbers aren’t even much worse.
Id say they are both B+ and you could make an argument that Freeman is a bter talent.

How can you give Tabata and Freeman the same grade?
That points to the B being too low for Freeman in my mind
by nixa37 on Jun 4, 2025 11:50 AM EDT up reply actions
Because I think Tabata is a plus defender in the OF
Freeman is a 1B.
by jar75 on Jun 4, 2025 11:57 AM EDT up reply actions
He's in a corner though, and Freeman could be a plus at 1B
Not a big difference and Freeman’s bat looks significantly better to me. Plus he’s at least a year younger and has a ton more projection than Tabata.
by nixa37 on Jun 4, 2025 12:01 PM EDT up reply actions
They're different players
Yes, Tabata will be in the corner, but he should be a plus defender. There’s a big difference between that and an average defensive first baseman. I like Freeman, but I don’t see him as an elite hitter and I need to see an elite bat to go higher than B for a first baseman.
by jar75 on Jun 4, 2025 12:10 PM EDT up reply actions
Agree to disagree I guess
I just see Freeman’s bat being much better than Tabata’s. Showing the contact and power Freeman is as the second youngest player in AAA (at least as of opening day) makes me think the bat will be very good with a high probability. Add in the physical projection and I don’t think a great/elite bat is out of the question. I just can’t see Tabata ever being more than a 2.5 WAR type of guy.
by nixa37 on Jun 4, 2025 12:16 PM EDT up reply actions
Well let's see
Tabata:
Avg defender in CF, so let’s say he’s +7.5 in LF (negating the defensive adjustment): 0
150 games, so replacement is: 20
He needs to only be 5 runs above average offensively to get to 2.5 wins, so he’d have to hit something like: .290/.345/.390 with 20 steals to get there.
Freeman:
Avg defender at 1B: -12.5
150 games, replacement: 20
He needs to be 17.5 runs above average offensively, so something like: .280/.345/.460 to get to 2.5 wins.
I definitely stand behind giving both Bs
by jar75 on Jun 4, 2025 1:05 PM EDT up reply actions
Like I said I disagree with you on those projections
I see Tabata being a neutral defender as an aggressive defensive ranking. I’d compare it to Freeman being above average at 1B, so something like a -10 defensive value. In essence I see Tabata being about 1 win better with the glove.
As for the bats, I think you’re being more aggressive with Tabata’s line than you are with Freeman’s. I see Freeman posting either the same or a better average than Tabata due to better contact rates and more power. I also see him posting a significantly better ISO than what you’re projecting. He’s got a higher ISO than that as a 20 year old in AAA, and he projects to add quite a bit of power with his huge frame. Tabata on the other hand is already close to maxing out his frame. Honestly, I think Freeman has a slightly higher floor with a significantly higher ceiling. I just don’t think the two are that close at all.
by nixa37 on Jun 4, 2025 1:59 PM EDT up reply actions
"I see Tabata being a neutral defender as an aggressive defensive ranking."
You mean neutral defender in CF which means he will likely be an above average defender in left. So defensively he is MUCH better than Freeman. Freeman’s bat may be better, but not better enough to make up for the difference in defence.
ETHAN MARTIN!!!!
by joegonzo on Jun 4, 2025 9:40 PM EDT up reply actions
That's not what I mean at all
I mean I think he’d be around a -2.5 in CF or a +7.5 in LF/RF, making him a neutral defender overall. Like I said, I see Tabata being about a win better in defensive value, but I see Freeman destroying him with the bat. I see Tabata as a .700 to .750 OPS guy, while I see Freeman as an .825 to .900 OPS guy.

To answer your second question, I’m not going to really answer with a “yes” or “no,” but it would help if in your comments you might put something other than just a 2-5 word comment every once in a while. Like maybe putting in some evidence or opinions on why you think what you are saying is right, you know? I haven’t gone through your entire list of comments, but judging from the ones on this thread, and the ones on the Brett Gardner thread, it would really help if you added some substance to your comments, you know?

I was talking about this thread, which really doesnt require any more than 2-5 words. I mean come on your puting a players name and grading them, If you wanna criticize me for that, you might as well criticize everyone else who is doing it. And to be honest I am tired of the criticism i’ve been getting and the name calling. I’ve been called names and been told I dont know what I am taling about at least 5 times in the month or so I have been here. Even in this situation, I was told I didnt know what I was talking about without an explanation why, I responded without an attack and still get criticized. How come you didnt respond to his comment? Really all I want to do is just make comments without being called a name or told I dont know what I am talking about. Is that so hard to ask?

The reason I didn't respond to his is that yours was the last in the mini thread
and I usually just continue commenting there. I agree that in this thread, making a one word post is totally fine, but even so, it’s nice to mix in an explanation in like 1 in every 10 of your posts.
I’m not really calling you out or anything, and I’m sorry you’ve been told that you don’t know anything, but I don’t know what you’ve been called names for in other situations, so I can’t comment about that.

this is to yankees10: judging by your posts the only thing you know about a prospect is this years stat-line and from there you rip-off other posters opinions and pass them off as your own. the fact that you are clearly biased towards yankee prospects doesnt help. if you start putting more substance into your posts it would help alot and earn you alot more respect.

i am actually sticking up for a yankee fan, but there are some people who are very quick to attack others based on what they do or do not know, or what they percieve that person to know…nobody is forced to respond to any post, so nobody should be critical of others knowledge. If you dont feel like responding to a poster because you dont feel they are knowledgable enough, dont respond…but i dont think it is necessary to attack someone and tell them “it is pretty clear you dont know what you are talking about”…Everyone was a new to this site at some point.

He really needs to start showing his bat is truly legit. If his defense is questionable, then a .212 AVG is not going to do it. His ISOp is still very nice, so he is hitting the ball hard, but his BABIP is around .290-.295 not really that bad…..212 however, reeks.

Loved the dominance in AA, AAA was a bit too much SSS, but adding a 3rd above avg pitch (if the CU truly is), then having 2 plus pitches with a 3rd solid pitch, and a nice GB%, with versatility of being a pen or starter, is pretty sweet.

Outside of SSS and the Cubs moving him to the pen, he’s done about everything that he could to answer questions from last year in regards to his ability to be a TOR starter.
Find consistency his slider? Check.
Develop a 3rd pitch? Circle-change is, by most accounts, anywhere from average to good.
Carry his stuff deep into games? Check.
Show improved control? Check.
Show better “pitchability”? Check. He’s showing the ability to generate the quick outs to conserve energy.
Tbh, I look at some of the grades that folks are giving for other arms, and I don’t see why Cashner shouldn’t be rated higher than them, but I guess SSS is a fair enough concern due to his history and due to the Cubs shifting him to the pen.

According to Scott Servais from the Rangers, he will be moved to the rotation within the next couple weeks. They have been slowly stretching him out. First few outings of 2 ip, then the last few of 3 ip. I’m not sure who they will replace. Maybe Doug Mathis. I thought they would have him replace Omar Beltre, but they had him go 81 pitches over 6 ip his last outing.

He is not moving off for a good 5 years at least unless he lets himself go. His body right now is perfectly fine for third. His bat puts makes him better. He should easily be an A and a Top ten guy. he has to be an A. Mo ended up a fat joke, but he also won an MVP, made 3 all-star teams, and finished his career with a 293/383/523 line, good for a 132 OPS+ for his 12 season career. That’s got to be Alvarez’s ceiling.

If you buy the Vaughn comp
and you think thats a B+, maybe you ought to go back and look at Vaughn’s career. Sure it declined sharply but he was one of the premier hitters in baseball right up until he left Boston.

think of it like this
WIth his glove and his wheels, Fuentes basically needs to have a major league OPS of about .750 to be a pretty dang useful player. He’s incredibly raw right now, with iffy plate discipline . . .and he’s pulling .725 or so at the moment. When this guy gets some real experience, the sky is the limit.

At his age/level, a C prospect is organizational filler with the upside of utility guy, while a B is a very solid major league starter. That’s a pretty huge difference.

this is roughly the spectrum to me
A = 1-8/10
A- = 9/10-22/24
B+ = 23/25-40
B = 40 - 80
B- = 80 - 150

drop A- to about 15-20 at most, B+ to 50 and B to 100, at least in an average year.

I want to go B+, but I can’t pull the trigger for now. Does have a solid 4 pitch offering. Change comes and goes at times, and the breaking pitches could both be more consistent. The K’s are down a bit, but he’s added much improved control, which should help his chances of sticking in the rotation. That said, sure feels like he’s unlikely to reach the ceiling of being a number 2 type. Who knows. When he’s on, he can look great.

B-.
I’m going B- on this one, which will probably continue the chants from some Cubs fans of me somehow hating on Lee. I have high hopes for him, but we’re talking a fringy bat. He had a hot streak in MWL, so there’s enough there. The defense needs to be cleaned up, although on the positive side, there’s really no big issue, as the arm strength looks solid. He’s far away, needs work. Ceiling’s high. Keeping him at a B would also make sense for me.
by toonsterwu on Jun 4, 2025 7:10 AM EDT up reply actions
Interesting - I'd stick with a B
The bat doesn’t seem so fringy to me - his power might be inching up, which makes sense in conjunction with the scouting reports. He’s still walking at a nice rate, and his Ks are dipping a bit, and he is stealing a lot of bases.

His bat hasn’t been that impressive in the MWL. There’s hope, but he hasn’t shown enough as a hitter to make me think he can be more than a slap hitter with a decent walk rate.

I'll go B
To me, his bat is all about his ability to get on base, which he seems able to do with his BB rate.

He was injured (again) to start the season and he hasn’t been particularly noteworthy in AA so far. He can easily bounce back, but the early returns haven’t been so good.

B-.
I’m jumping him all the way up to a B-. The ceiling’s huge. Big fastball in the mid-90’s, power curve (or some say slider, but most reports suggest curve) that can flash plus ability at times. Needs to improve his 3rd pitch and get better control, but so far so good. If he finishes strong, I could even see a case for a B.

He has been great in AA this year at 21. He is getting more swinging strikes, but still only striking out 5.8/9. He has only walked 9 in 69 ip. Jason Parks did an evaluation on him saying that he currently would still project him as a #5 innings eater, or long relief. He said he will need to add an out pitch to project any higher. I think he will be more than that. He won’t beat himself since he never walks anyone. I think as he learns to pitch, he will continue to get better. Hopefully they get him up to AAA around the all-star break.

I’m sorry, can I just say, that regrading prospects after 1/3 of a season is a fools errand. Not only are the sample sizes small but the questions we had about many of these guys aren’t answered this quickly. Other than the few breakout players (Montgomery, Trout, Tehran, Franklin etc.) most grades should really remain the same.

22 years old and was pitching hurt. There’s still great stuff there, but he might end up as a closer. Then, that B- will be completely justified.

FMM gets a high B from me. You can’t teach stuff, and guys who throw like he does find a place on a major league team.

Extremely boring player IMO. Ceiling is Callapso, which isn’t bad, but it’s nothing special.

Grant Desme 2.0 (minus the whole leaving to become a priest)?
B-, definitely need to see the bat at a higher level.

Desme was an extremely toolsy athlete.
Sands is more of a low average slugger in the future.

My thought on this is that all of the average posted letter grades are about one to two half-grades too high, which makes a lot of sense. For the most part, people are only taking the time to rank guys they have an interest in, and most of us don’t have a long list of prospects we absolutely hate, but we do have in our minds a bunch of guys who really pique our interest. There’s a pretty big selection bias in these grades, in other words. Still a fun exercise though.

Tough call . . .he’s definitely improved over last year, but between the environment and the quality of the competition, Lancaster might just be the easiest place in the minor leagues to hit. Austin has been way better in Lancaster (.818 home OPS vs. .680 away).
I’ll give some credit for youth and some improvement in the numbers.
