As a more casual, less sophisticated fan, it's more fun for me to see lots of hits in a game.
Who's with me?
Would you rather see a pitcher's duel or a home run derby?
AND...
Why? My Spidey sense tells me that a pitcher's duel would be more interesting from a 'subtle nuance of baseball' viewpoint, which I think would be a more mature fan's point of interest.
I guess I'm not much for subtle...

Pitcher's Duel
Not even a question for me. There is something special about seeing 2 hurlers go at it and try and one up each other inning after inning. No player has a greater impact on the game than the pitcher.

don’t get me wrong, I enjoy seeing some big flys, but seeing pitchers on their game, making all-star sluggers look silly is pretty fascinating.

I guess it depends on the two pitchers on the mound.
Classic Petey vs. Santana and I’m taking the pitchers’ duel.
Jarrod Washburn vs. Kyle Davies? Give me home runs and lots of them.
There’s nothing subtle or nuanced about watching two mediocre pitchers lucking into a pitchers’ duel by virtue of a team’s off-day at the plate or the defense behind the pitcher.

Good defense, yeah.
But, given that more balls in play are turned into outs than not, even with cruddy defenses, meh "pitchers’ duels" have a tendency of popping up.

Pitchers Duel
because the tension that gets built up if the two pitchers take a shut out late into the game, because whoever scores first will most likely win the game and gets the fans into it and makes everyone play better.

Pitchers' duel
When I see a pitchers’ duel, I’m focused on the excellence of two men, which is exhibited by the struggles of all the hitters. In a home run derby, I just think the pitching sucks and they’re playing softball.

I saw DeNiro once on Letterman. Letterm,an asked him if he had seen David Wells’ perfect game (may have been Cone’s, I forget).
DeNiro asks “What’s that?” Letterman explains no hits, no walks, no one gets to first base.
DeNiro says. “No nothing? That sounds boring.”
So I guess despite Bang the Drum Slowly he isn’t much of a baseball fan. Or he was putting Dave on.

Depends on several factors
A 15-14 game can be a lot of fun to watch. On the other hand, a 20-10 game would be duller than watching paint dry for me. A slugfest, provided it is competitive, can be entertaining.
If the slugfest is the result of errors, walks, passed balls and beer league quality pitching, that is just god awful painful to have to watch.
A pitcher’s duel can be fantastic, but if both teams have combined for 5 errors and 13 walks, that’s not very compelling. However, I could watch a 7-0 game and enjoy it, if one pitcher was just playing out of his mind and dominating.

Well
I would say that it’s probably more about a close game vs. a blowout. Yeah, I can see the appeal of a 1-0 game but also a 10-9 slugfest is great to see too. Whether the great performances come from the mound or the batters box, greatness is fun to watch.

then why go to a game?
I go to a game to watch the game and if it takes 4 hours then I got to see 4 hours of baseball and not 2. I never understood why people were so concerned about how long a game takes to play when it’s one of the more enjoyable things to do in life. I can hurry back to my family and work after the game.

I never get that either.
As far as I’m concerned, when I have tickets to a game the longer it takes, the better.
Baseball games are only “slow” for football fans who don’t appreciate the battle between pitcher and batter (which is the heart of the game).

I just don’t concern myself with how long a game takes to play out. I go to the game to watch the game, not the clock.

Not only is it a time consideration, but as exciting as dingers are, they do not compare to the intensity of two great hurlers taking everyone down with little effort. It’s a stress level thing.

If my team is playing
I want to see them get lots of hits and runs, and some home runs as well while my pitcher is at least solid. But if it is simply baseball and I have no particular rooting interest, I want to see a well played game which means excellent pitching and defense to me. 1-0 in extra innings, assuming it is due to good play, is a perfect game to me. Or if there is a mix, say 4-3 with a couple of clutch hits making the difference in a game the pitchers throw well, that is also good.

Give me the slugfest.
Pitcher’s duels are fine, too, but I like to see action. I like to see fielders running after balls and the bases juiced. The game is more exciting when guys are hitting the ball.
I can get into a pitchers duel, sure, but if I have tickets to a game you can damn well bet I want to see some HRs and run scoring.

Pitchers' Duel All The Way
So much more tension, so much more strategy. One tiny thing could swing the game either way. In a slugfest, it’s often just whoever bats last. A pitchers’ duel involves every single player and coach to the full extent of their abilities. Have you ever seen how all-out defensively players will go to preserve a no-hitter? Nothing better.

This is somewhat of an effect of being an A’s fan, in which I am so used to seeing low scoring games all the time that a game where both teams are hitting it out the park in a 20-21 game would be awesome to me.

I love seeing games that go back-and-forth with lots of lead changes, and I love seeing huge comeback rallies where the team in the lead is just freaking out trying to find someone, anyone, who can record an out.
Once you realize that pitchers’ duels are often as much about luck as skill, I think the attraction wanes a bit.

Pitchers' duel
But this is largely because I am a Braves fan, and our pitching is a lot better than our hitting, particularly in late innings. So a pitchers’ duel means we have a good chance of winning. A slugfest, and I’m not too sanguine. If our team was balanced towards hitting, I’m sure I’d enjoy more slugfests.
Aesthetically, a pitcher in complete command is a joy to watch. Like ThomasG said, a fringy guy getting really lucky is less so.

Pitching duel every time
There’s nothing better than two pitchers on top of their game going head-to-head, plus defence and fundamentals seem to matter more in a 1-0 game than a 10-9 slugfest.
I’ve watched my fair share of blowout games, but can’t remember too much about most of them.
But I still remember a great 1-0 game at Fenway in 1998 when Pedro Martinez just outpitched Bartolo Colon. Midre Cummings hit a homer for the only run of the game.

Slugfest
I always want to see something memorable, something never done before. A double no-hitter would be really cool, but once both teams have hits and no chance for 20+ strikeouts, then the appeal of a never-before game is gone. With a slugfest, there’s always a chance of a 5-homer game by an individual, a 20-run inning, a 30+-run game, a 12-run comeback, etc. etc. Don’t get me wrong, I love a good pitcher’s duel, but I’ve seen that. I’ve seen slugfests, too, but there’s a better chance oif history with the latter.

6/13/06
On 6/13/06 I saw the greatest game I have ever seen live. Line below (thanks Retrosheet!).
Curt Schilling vs. Johan Santana. Both pitchers had put a few guys on, but Schilling kept managing to get the big out (ground balls, double plays) and Santana, breathtaking, struck out thirteen. The pressure rose, as the crowd felt that any mistake, any one run, would surely lock up the game. With two outs in the bottom of the seventh, Schilling gave up a HR to Cuddyer, 1-0 Twins. That seemed like that. Amazingly though, Jason “not-dead-yet” Varitek homered off Santana with two outs in the bottom of the seventh. 1-1 tie, a gorgeous pitchers duel, and both pitchers were lifted after eight.
In the 12th, the two closers used and sent to the showers, Jesse Crain gave up a couple of hits and allowed Mike Lowell to score. On came the immortal Julian Tavarez. 2 singles and a walk later, he faced Jason Kubel, and gave off the elusive and mighty walk-off Grand Slam. Twins win, 5-2.
This game had everything, then. Three HRs, two dominant pitching performances with just enough runners on base to keep it interesting, knee-buckling strikeouts, thick tension in extra innings, an unlikely hero and an all-too-likely goat.
Pitching duels create tension and drama in the way that homer-fests do not.

When I saw this thread, this was the exact game I thought of. One of the best pitchers duels I have ever seen. And seeing Kubel hit the Granny off of the RF foul pole was the icing on the cake.

Close Game
It’s a game’s closeness that makes it exciting for me. When any mistake, any clutch hit, any big strikeout can mean the difference between winning and losing – especially in a close race. I also like big rivalries – Boston/NY, Phillies/Mets, Longhorns/Aggies.
