Sean Rodriguez
For this post, I'd appreciate the help of especially the Angels fans on this site (along with everybody else). I want to figure out the Angels 2B issues. They have Howie Kendrick, Erick Aybar, Maicer Izturis, and then Sean Rodriguez (in AAA).
Howie Kendrick is hitting
| Team | League | AVG | G | AB | R | H | 2B | 3B | HR | RBI | TB | BB | SO | SB | CS | OBP | SLG | OPS |
| LAA | AL | .227 | 47 | 172 | 22 | 39 | 6 | 1 | 4 | 21 | 8 | 33 | 6 | 2 | .273 | .343 | .616 |
Erick Aybar is hitting
| Team | League | AVG | G | AB | R | H | 2B | 3B | HR | RBI | TB | BB | SO | SB | CS | OBP | SLG | OPS |
| LAA | AL | .277 | 40 | 141 | 14 | 39 | 9 | 2 | 1 | 13 | 6 | 16 | 1 | 1 | .305 | .390 | .695 |
Maicer Izturis is hitting
| Team | League | AVG | G | AB | R | H | 2B | 3B | HR | RBI | TB | BB | SO | SB | CS | OBP | SLG | OPS |
| LAA | AL | .261 | 35 | 111 | 20 | 29 | 3 | 0 | 0 | 13 | 7 | 13 | 5 | 1 | .303 | .288 | .592 |
Sean Rodriguez is hitting
| Team | League | AVG | G | AB | R | H | 2B | 3B | HR | RBI | TB | BB | SO | SB | CS | OBP | SLG | OPS |
| SLC | PCL | .276 | 52 | 185 | 39 | 51 | 6 | 2 | 19 | 57 | 118 | 19 | 60 | 6 | 1 | .358 | .638 | .996 |
Obviously, Sean Rodriguez has the best power out of the three. He is also a plus defender (I don't know how well Aybar and Izturis field, but I'm guessing they are solid considering their SS background) while Howie Kendrick is a poor defenseman. I know his ML debut last year was less than memorable, but his AAA stats are outstanding; his OPS has been near 1.000 for quite a while, while LAA's other 3 2B candidates have not topped .700 My question is why hasn't he gotten another shot (other than Scioscia loving little bunting 2B) and who you would most like to have at 2B and why.

Sean Rod
The Halos are lacking thumpers in the lineup.

Not entirely an unbaised presentation of the facts...
Interesting to note that Sean Rod had a 203/276/317 line in the majors last year in a little over 184 PAs. Or lower OPS than Kendrick has so far this year.
Or that in his last significant year in AAA Kendrick hit 369/408/631. Or that Kendrick had a 750 OPS in the majors last year, sure not very good, but still the best of this bunch.
So it’s not exactly fair to compare Sean Rod’s AAA performance to Kendrick’s MLB performance, apples and oranges. If you compare their stats at the same levels, Kendrick wins every time.

+ I agree
Howie K isnt having the greatest season but, I do not think Sean Rodriguez is a better hitter than him. Also, to the original poster - Howie is not a poor defender at all.
If you want to put pressure on Kendrick to play Id say they should play Izturis there more instead of benching Aybar every time he has a porr game but, thats just me. I like Aybar more than most. He (Aybar) has been really good at short this season also btw.
I will say that Sean Rodriguez has certainly earned a shot to play in the majors this year though.

I've been a moderate fan of Rodriguez for a couple of years
but 60 Ks in 185 AB is a huge red flag. The HR/2B ratio seems a little flukey to me as well. His current approach seems to be working right now in the PCL, but I just don’t see it playing in the majors. He deserves to get a shot eventually, but the Angels need Kendrick to get going if they want to be good this year — Rodriguez won’t be the solution.

Agree - his k rate has spiked since last year's AAA stint, from about 16% to 28%
On the other hand, he’s a smart player whose shown the ability to change his approach to fit the context - he boosted his walk rate in a terrible hitters park in Arkansas two years ago, but not on the road, where he continued to hit for power. Last year’s AAA line was unbelievable, and this year it looks like he’s swinging from the heals, exploiting the ball’s tendency to fly in SLC. With time at the MLB level, he’ll find the right approach, but that’s time the Halos don’t have to give him.

Hey - does anyone have a good take on his D at short
Last year I heard nothing but negative stuff re everything from his arm to his range. I know his range isn’t great, but I’ve read previously that his arm is stellar, his hands great, and his instincts outstanding. Sean Smith’s defensive MLE’s and BP metric support the positive in 07, and I want to believe the best here….

I have some acquaintances
in Arkansas who had the opportunity to watch both Brandon Wood and Sean Rodriguez play and they thought Rodriguez was equal or superior to Wood in just about every aspect of the game, including defending at the short stop position.

SeanRod is K’ing in AAA 33% of the time…
Scioscia values the plus defense he gets from Aybar/Izturis at SS. Also, Howie is very solid at 2B, even if stats say otherwise. Aybar is slooowly starting to come around; Izturis is solid, if unspectacular (with a spectacular career AVG w/RISP) when healthy. Then, there’s that other guy who is stuck in AAA, and is higher on the depth chart. Many think whenever he gets his chance, it’ll be at 3B, with Figgins/Izturis covering 2B on some days, and at SS with Figgins at 3B, and Izturis at 2B when Aybar is off.
About Howie, this is really the first time, continuing from the ALDS last October, in his career that he has slumped. His approach at the plate is atrocious; he has no discipline. Often watches great pitches, then when with 2 strikes, will nearly always swing at anything low and away. He also hasn’t made solid contact this year, with a lot of weak grounders and pop ups on balls he should hammer. Talented? Yes, but Halo fans are fed up.
We’ll see what happens in the coming weeks.
