#1 Waiver Priority

I have the #1 waiver priority in my 10-team Dynasty League.  I have a chance to grab Neftali Feliz, but I'm not sure if that's my best move.  My team cannot compete this year - I'm looking to compete next year and into the future.  My team is as follows:

Hitting Categories:  R, H, 2B, 3B, HR, RBI, SB, BB, K, AVG, OBP, SLG

C  Matt Wieters
1B Lance Berkman
2B Ian Stewart
3B Andy LaRoche
SS Hanley Ramírez
CI Garrett Atkins
MI Alexei Ramírez
LF Carlos Lee
CF Jay Bruce
RF Bobby Abreu
OF Justin Upton
Util Nelson Cruz
Util Eric Byrnes
BN Brandon Wood
BN Cameron Maybin
BN Lars Anderson
BN Travis Snider
BN Jake Fox
DL Chris Iannetta
DL Alex Gordon

Pitching Categories:  W, L, CG, SHO, SV, K, GIDP, HLD, ERA, WHIP

SP Matt Garza
SP Johnny Cueto
SP Zack Greinke
SP David Price
SP Chris Carpenter
RP Brian Matusz
RP Chris Pérez
RP Joel Zumaya
P Manny Parra
P Andrew Miller
BN Clay Buchholz
BN Chris Tillman
DL Scott Kazmir
DL Kelvim Escobar
DL Jose Valverde

My question is this - when do I use my #1 waiver priority?  I have options:  I can take Feliz now.  I can wait for MadBum to be called up (if he's not called up this year then my #1 goes to waste).  I can wait for Strasburg (even smaller chance that he ends up in the majors this year).  I can wait for somebody else (who?).

What would you do with the #1 waiver priority in a 10-team Dynasty League looking to compete next year and into the future?  Please explain below.  Feliz goes off waivers tomorrow!

Pedro Feliz

He’s beast.

A noob or n00b is someone that lacks intellegance or common sense, most people think that noob is a word used only in the online gaming world, but in reality it is becoming an ever popular word with teenage society.

a noob could be simply a level 100 running round shouting ‘’WTF DO I GO!?’’ or someone calling someone else a noob and then getting hit with a brick, anyone can call anyone a noob, but normally they are noobs themselves

Sarcastic

Since Pedro Feliz is the Philly crappy 3B

yeah

sorry - i didn’t even catch that…

Why does it matter when Strasburg makes the majors...

Can you only claim him at a certain point? You already said you arent competing this year…

by alskor on Jun 2, 2025 2:09 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Probably

only able to claim him if he’s added to the player database by Yahoo or some other site like that.

RIP Nick Adenhart

by gatling on Jun 2, 2025 2:12 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

exactly

I can only claim people who are added to Yahoo.

by rmarx01 on Jun 2, 2025 2:14 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Ahh

that makes sense. I was afraid it was a thing where he could only keep him if he played in MLB at some point, something like that…

Also

In the poll you have Neftali Feliz labelled “Pedro Feliz.”

by alskor on Jun 2, 2025 2:29 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

CRAP!

Thanks for the heads-up! Is there a way to update it?

by rmarx01 on Jun 2, 2025 2:34 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Someone else or Bumgarner

Not to take away from Feliz, but his value as a fantasy pitcher is diminished pitching in Texas. I would rather have Bumgarner in his home park or Mat Latos in Petco. Not to say they are better prospects, but all things considered.

Hanson’s already been selected?

yeah

Hanson was added to Yahoo already and has been taken

by rmarx01 on Jun 2, 2025 2:56 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Feliz was added to Yahoo before the season began. He’s been sitting in my watch list all year.

And by that, I mean he shouldn’t require a waiver selection.

re

You’re right, but somebody had him. That person just dropped him, so now he’s available on waivers.

by rmarx01 on Jun 2, 2025 3:34 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Ah

Then Feliz might be your best option since I doubt Bumgarner gets called up. You might get lucky and he gets a September pat on the back, but I’d be surprised.

how on god greens earth are you not competing

with that pitching staff? your pitching is very good, very deep, and will be so for a long time ahead with greinke, cueto, garza, price, matusz and tillman and maybe Bucholz. You can afford to wait for MadBum and/or Strasburg. I would address hitting, particuraly second and third base. LaRoche and Stewart seem like gambles to me, even if LaRoche is starting to heat up. I’d look at whose available in those positions, or pick up Feliz and trade one of your starters for a young 2B, say, Garza straight up for Ian Kinsler or Pedroia or Bucholz for another risky-ish asset. Your pitching should be deep enough to allow it.
best of luck

re

I’m not competing because half of my staff is still in the minors (Matusz, Tillman, Buchy), I just got Carpenter back a few starts ago, Price was just called up, and others are on the DL. Garrett Atkins has been HORRIBLE (will he get better???), and Gordon got hurt after batting .095. That’s why I can’t compete until next year. As far as Kinsler goes, the guy who owns Kinsler probably wouldn’t give him up for my entire team. Somehow, he has Teixeira, Utley, Wright, Miggy Cabrera, Kinsler, Holliday, Ethier, Rios, Sizemore, Jose Reyes, Johan, Peavy, Lester, Billingsley, Papelbon) - I don’t know how he did it, but he found a lot of suckers (it’s my fault he has Reyes - I traded him Reyes for Carlos Lee 6 years ago before I found out it was a keeper league).

alright

a) that is a sick, sick, team
b) same thing pretty much happened to me, gordon, sizemore, tulo….
c) your most pressing need is at second, followed by third. Trade some of your pitching depth for some high ceilinged prospects, I suppose. I’d start with Carpenter, who has value now, will not have value in a couple of years, and can help another team out, followed by Escobar, Kazmir ( sell while you still can, he’s becoming an injury prone 5 inning pitcher), Parra, and Valverde. That should net you a couple of good offensive prospects, and then I’d say pick up Feliz

yeah

his team is pretty ridiculous. Needless to say, he’s pretty much #1 every year (I feel like he may have finished #2 one of the years). I don’t think I have a huge need at 2B (I can move Alexei Ramirez there - he’s 2B eligible right now - probably won’t be next year, in which case I would agree with you that I need a 2B). Once Gordon is back, I’ll be good at 3B, but then I’d need a CI. For the most part I agree with you, but there is some help on the way (i.e. Gordon), and I’m hoping there’s just something going on with Atkins that’s making him so bad.

sidetrack

Not to sidetrack this too much from the original discussion, but another question is: who do I drop when my DL guys (Iannetta, Gordon, Escobar, Kazmir, Valverde) return from the DL? I’m thinking Byrnes then Fox, then I don’t know…

by rmarx01 on Jun 2, 2025 3:04 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

re zumaya

I’ve had him since he was first called up - I was a HUGE fan of his, then he went down and has hurt me with injuries. He’s healthy now and looking like the Zumaya of old - I think he’s going to be the CL before the end of this season, and a dominant one (I picture Joe Nathan).

parra

I think you could axe Manny Parra without losing a lot of sleep.

re parra

yeah, he’s near the bottom of my list. when he’s on he’s absolutely dominant, but he’s so streaky. Parra and Andrew Miller are very similar to me.

Aramis Ramirez / Howie Kendrick

Aramis Ramirez is on the block, and the guy’s looking for a “top SP with a lot of Ks”. I could try to get him and try to pry Howie Kendrick away from him also. Thoughts on Kendrick?

by rmarx01 on Jun 2, 2025 4:07 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Kendrick should be a lock for.320 and 15HR

but he is doing bad this season

re kendrick

and a SB threat? .320 and 15HR doesn’t seem all that amazing to me - I’ve never understood why people were so high on him. The lineup around him is aging, too.

by rmarx01 on Jun 2, 2025 4:40 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

.320?

How is that not amazing? Also 15HR is a high for a good fielding 2nd baseman.

Big Numbers

by homerun013 on Jun 2, 2025 4:53 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

re amazing

there’s a difference between good and amazing. Kendrick is good, in that he doesn’t help in many offensive categories. Categories in my league are:

R, H, 2B, 3B, HR, RBI, SB, BB, K, AVG, OBP, SLG

Kendrick helps with H, SB?, AVG and OBP.

That’s why I had asked what people thought about him. I see him as another Pedroia, just on a worse offensive team (even though the Angels have good offense, they’re getting old).

by rmarx01 on Jun 2, 2025 4:55 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Ok

If its fantasy and all. I was just thinking, how could .320 not be good for a 2nd baseman. Nevermind then.

Big Numbers

by homerun013 on Jun 3, 2025 3:57 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I disagree

Kendrick isnt as good as he’s made out to be and he’s often injured.

If the hits don’t fall for him he doesnt bring a whole lot to the table. Id say more like 10 HRs and 10 SBs are reasonable, along with a ~.280 AVG. Pass on him. He’s still overrated. One of these years he will put up a huge .320/15+/15 campaign… but I dont want to be the guy that waits out three mediocre/crappy years for it.

Go Starsburg

But I don’t know that he will gie much upside considering he will be on the Nats next year

Big Numbers

by homerun013 on Jun 2, 2025 4:30 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

yeah

that’s really the only thing holding him back, but Lincecum was on a pretty crappy team last year and still put up sick numbers. I see Strasburg (or Starsburg - I like that) as the same kind of thing.

by rmarx01 on Jun 2, 2025 4:32 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Yes

Lincecum also ahs a team of $100 million behind, the nats don’t

re

I understand what you’re saying, but that still doesn’t mean he had a good lineup helping him last year.

by rmarx01 on Jun 2, 2025 4:40 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

True

the Nats have a better team this year and next year for shure, they willhit way better.

Big Numbers

by homerun013 on Jun 3, 2025 3:58 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Strasburg

Honestly, you’re never going to beat that first place team unless you gamble on guys with the highest of high upside and hit on a bunch of them. Neftali Feliz will probably be a fine major league pitcher but he’s going to pitch half his games in Texas and 93% of them against a lineup using a DH… That doesn’t translate well to fantasy baseball success, which is your primary concern. Go for Strasburg and if he doesn’t make the majors grab another September call-up instead, there will be a good consolation prize out there regardless.

by hockey4001 on Jun 3, 2025 1:38 AM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

+1

I think Strasburg has a better shot of reaching the majors this year than MadBum. The Nats let Zimmerman get a cup just a couple months after drafting him.

it will likely be in his contract, like it was for Andrew Miller.
