Travis Snider called up

From Ken Rosenthal via MLB Trade Rumors:

The Phillies, adding a left-handed hitter to their bench, have acquired outfielder Matt Stairs from the Blue Jays, according to major-league sources.

The Jays will receive a prospect in return. The identity of that player has not yet been determined.

The Phillies have been actively searching for bench help, and their urgency only increased after they placed outfielder Geoff Jenkins on the disabled list Saturday. The team attempted to acquire outfielder Mark Kotsay earlier this week, but the Braves traded Kotsay to the Red Sox.

Stairs is hitting .250 this season with 11 homers and 44 RBIs. He was designated for assignment Thursday to clear a spot for outfielder Travis Snider, who is one of the Jays' top position prospects and will replace Stairs in the outfield.

Wow

Seems like only yesterday the Snider v. Rowell debate was going on. Snider’s been a favorite prospect of mine since before he was drafted, good to see him make the show.

My guess

Give him a few reps at the end of the year at a higher level. The season’s over anyway… no worries if he sinks this year.

seems

a little rushed to me…Snider is still pretty raw and young…but I hope he succeeds he’s a fav of mine too, I just have no confidence in JP Ricciardi

That was fast

Hopefully he can swim. I’m guessing this is just a temporary move and that he starts next season in AAA, but I could be wrong.

Vogt early, Vogt often.

Cito

At least Cito won’t send him back down after 19 AB’s like the Jays did for Lind. IMO, it’s an attempted face saving move for JP trying to hang onto his job for as long as he can. I don’t necessarily disagree with calling up Snider, but I don’t think that the Jays are doing it for the right reasons.

good move

I don’t see any problem with the move. If he succeeds, it gives you a better idea of the type of acquisitions you need in the offseason (maybe focus on a right-handed DH/OF bat instead of a LH one). If he struggles, he just spends that much more time in AAA next year. This guy is going to be locked-up long-term before any service time issues come up. Options shouldn’t be a problem either, though they could wait until Sept 1, if they are concerned.

I wouldn’t pretend to know why the Jays decided to do this move, but despite his social graces, JP is not dumb enough to think that calling up Snider will be the difference between him getting canned or returning for another season.

Snider

No smart team will come to any conclusions based on a few weeks. When Lind first came up as a Sept callup he did tremendous, the following season he struggled.

I don’t think that JP sees this as a determining move, but rather an extra bullet in his gun in his attempt to keep his job.

This is exactly correct!

IMHO, nothing but an attempt to show that he can draft hitting talent…

Snider will be lucky to hit .250

Throw him a curveball anywhere and he will swing, just like Jay Bruce.

ok

pitchers don’t throw curve balls in the minor leagues????

I've got a McPheever, and only JoJo Reyes can help me!
