MOD: Pirates #2
I've put this off long enough and it's time to revisit the issue of who to draft in the upcoming mock. The Pirates have picks: 4, 49, 53 and 84.
With the #4 pick, I'd still very much like Jacob Turner or Tyler Matzek, but the recent reports make that scenario unlikely. There are rumors that the Pirates will go cheap (Wil Myers or Brian Borchering) in hopes of saving money to sign Sano. I'm not fond of this idea at all, and I'd personally rather pick a hard to sign 1st rounder in case Sano falls through. If they decide to go cheap, I'd rather have Wheeler or Leake, but it doesn't make the plan much more palatable. Of the college pitchers, my favorite is Alex White.
I'm still looking at an easy signing for the #49 pick (since it isn't protected). I'm hoping a solid college starter slides to this point.
The next 2 picks will be the best available, and I'd like to grab one of the HS catchers there.
Any input is welcomed, and I still need a deputy.

i voted gibson because, well, i'm in love with gibson, but
aaron crow might make a lot of sense here. he’s got a lot of upside, though not much projection, so he might be a fast riser.
plus, because of the debacle last year, he’s probably gonna be looking to sign early, which might mean you’d get good value.
matzek’s probably a 1 in 3 possibility to make it to you, but if he doesn’t, one of crow or ackley definitely will. and that would also be good value.
human beings, who are almost unique in their ability to learn from the experiences of others, are also remarkable for their apparent disinclination to do so.

curious
Are you ignoring Scheppers because he didn’t sign last year?
In what St. Louis Cardinals manager Tony La Russa called a "big day" for his club, starter Chris Carpenter took the mound for his first session of live batting practice and promptly buzzed the fuzz on catcher Jason LaRue’s chin with an errant fastball.
"Sorry," Carpenter called from the mound.
"Don’t say you’re sorry," LaRue barked back.
"He said it," pitching coach Dave Duncan said from the side of the cage, "but he didn’t mean it."

Scheppers
According mlbrumors, he didn’t give his consent (contradicting earlier reports):
“Kiley McDaniel of Baseball Prospectus agrees that the Pirates are the favorite for Dominican talent Miguel Angel Sano, and says the Rays, Cubs, A’s, Blue Jays, Yankees, Rangers, and Twins are also after him. It’s speculated by McDaniel and elsewhere that the Pirates could budget less toward their fourth overall pick in June to compensate for Sano. John Perrotto of Inside Pittsburgh Sports says they like Kyle Gibson, Aaron Crow, Bobby Borchering, and Wil Myers. Tanner Scheppers did not give the Bucs permission to redraft him. "

Miller
Personally I like Shelby Miller.
I voted for and have a feeling it will be Kyle Gibson.
I also think there is an outside shot they do something like take Grant Green.
An interesting idea to me I read somewhere or another would be to take Tate if he is available. Let him go and take the 5th pick next year if they can sign Sano or make a big push to sign him if they can’t sign Sano.
