Brandon Belt.

He deserves to be in there over Jeremy Toole when using the ’09 draft class for comparison.

belt

Yeah, I thought about him. Saw him play in college and was fairly impressed.

by John Sickels on Nov 27, 2025 8:32 PM EST up reply actions

i had it in my mind that the giants system would stand out

for some reason. I mean, not top tier system, but good. that said, skimming over this initial player list, it doesn’t look that impressive to me. eh, maybe i’m way off.

by toonsterwu on Nov 27, 2025 6:58 PM EST reply actions

Agreed

I think this system took a step backwards.

by jar75 on Nov 27, 2025 8:54 PM EST up reply actions

Yea

The loss of Tim Alderson really will create a drop in the rankings of the Giants system. Oh, and Scott Barnes.

by Matt Rox on Nov 27, 2025 9:18 PM EST up reply actions

Is this sarcasm?

This system has taken some pretty big hits. Bumgarner’s fallen from elite status, and Alderson and Villialona were both borderline top-100. Noonan, Gillaspie, and Ishikawa all had disappointing years. I don’t see how this system hasn’t taken a step back, unless you always thought it began and ended with Posey.

by PissedMick on Nov 27, 2025 9:57 PM EST up reply actions

Bumgarner's fallen from elite status?

I really don’t think so.

He was 19 in AA for most of the season. His peripherals weren’t the earth shattering awesome they were in ’08, but they were still pretty damn good, and he was still very, very young for the league.

He’s not putting up oh-my-gawd breathtaking peripherals like he put up in A ball last year, but he’s still showing some relative dominance. He’s got a ways to go, but he’s still elite. If the Giants don’t do something stupid like rush him up to MLB, of course. Or trade him for some mediocre vet.

He may not be top 5 in MLB, but I probably wouldn’t hesitate to put him in top 20.

Not sure if he's fallen

But his velocity was in the mid to upper 80s, that’s worrisome to me.

this

some of the bloom is off the rose for this reason. it’ll be interesting to see if he gets any velocity back in the next year or so.

well

Looking at what’s in the system now, I just wonder if the system was sort of overhyped. I don’t know - maybe I have false image in my head, but it seemed like folks were fairly high on the Giants system this year in reading review. I’m not real impressed with the depth in the system, and I don’t think there’s that many elite chips at the top. I mean, all systems have raw chips in the lower levels (I’m fairly intrigued with Jorge Buchardo and Hector Sanchez seems to be a very intriguing asset).

I still like Bumgarner. Willing to give him the benefit of the doubt on any drops in velo from the low 90’s to the high 80’s. I mean, sometimes it happens and it’s a serious issue, and sometimes, it isn’t. I like Clayton Tanner as an end of the rotation type arm. But … I’m still taking a wait and see on Noonan. I think Crawford was a bit overhyped this year, and Gillaspie doesn’t interest me. I don’t see enough high ceiling arms, and I don’t see many positional assets that scream out to me. Certainly, development in the near future of some raw assets could change things.

I don’t think the system is bad (should still be top 20) but based on the discussions here, and elsewhere, I thought the system would be better than this. But then again maybe it’s me.

by toonsterwu on Nov 28, 2025 2:45 PM EST up reply actions

The Giants system is almost completely devoid of B/B- prospects

There are, what, 2? 3 if you’re high on Rafael Rodriguez? Very little depth in this system until you get to the C grades.

I thought i saw the Giants released Osiris Matos as a minor league free agent

I could be wrong though. Kevin Pucetas and Mike McBryde should be on the list

by Gobroks on Nov 27, 2025 8:41 PM EST reply actions

Correct. Matos is no longer a Giant.

Bret Pill and Darren Ford’s rankings should go up significantly

Joe Martinez
Wendell Fairley

No on Fairley. I don’t believe in him at all. Martinez is sort of the pitching version of Rohlinger or Downs…I could put him in. Turpen and King and Belt are all possibiliies also.

Kind of...

The family of the victim asked the judge to drop the charges which he did, however the prosecutor is still planning on taking him to court. As best I can tell, the charges that were dropped were filed by the family, so the government can still file charges themselves. The rumor is that Villalona paid about 150K to get the family to drop charges, so I have little doubt that whatever witnesses there are may similarly go silent.

Last we’d heard of the Villalona case was that he was released of all fault, which we took as the family dropped the charges (most probably because of a payoff) and that since they no longer will testify there is no criminal case either.

The team prefers him in the outfield. A big part of his season was that he was wearing a heavy knee brace that limited his mobility. He got a smaller one midseason, but he should be without it next season. Machemer says he’s one to keep an eye on once it’s off.

Is it Brandon Crawford next? Henry Sosa?

or Nick Noonan? or what about Rafael Rodriguez is Raffy still atop 10 or 12 prospect for the Giants overall?

I’ll be interested to see where 1. Kieschnick 2. Joaquin 3. Gillaspie 4. Dominguez 5. Joseph

I can't imagine taking Bumgarner over Posey.

Posey’s one of the top handful of bats in the minors, in terms of upside and probability of reaching it. That’s in addition to the fact that he plays solid defense in the hardest position to fill on the field.

Even if Bumgarner still had his 2008 stuff, there’s no way I’d take him over a player like Posey.

Probably the last guy on the 40 and shouldn’t be any higher, but he was on an upward trajectory until getting hurt.

He was healthy this year rehabbing in SS. Was going multiple innings at the end of the year. 10.1 K/9 in his career, had success in High-A before getting hurt. Could pull a Runzler next year if he stay healthy. Better bet to contribute than Downs.
