Hi guys

I was just wondering if you guys had any thoughts as to the Posey rumor he is asking for about 12mm bonus, and if you think it was the Rays that floated that idea out there or Posey’s representatives.

Addiitonally, it would seem Beckham is just the type of guy who fits Harrison’s profile:
drafting the best possible player without regard for position.

by thomasps3 on Jun 5, 2025 11:35 AM EDT   0 recs

It's official, Beckham to Rays.

St. Pete Times reported they are picking him.

Newspaper = Official

It’s times like these when I sit back, chuckle a bit, and relax by reading some of David McCullough’s award-winning biography of President Dewey.

As a newspaperman myself...

To quote Phil Graham, newspapers try to provide the “first, rough draft of history.” Obviously, the draft is occasionally extremely rough. But, cough, cough I think we do a pretty good job a pretty good amount of the time.

Oh, yeah. The Rays did pick Beckham. Booyah!

Cleveland Indians

I’ve seen so many names linked with the Tribe these last couple of weeks that I have no clue who they might pick. I’m starting like Gillaspie more and more though, so hopefully they can draft him.

by JP_Frost on Jun 5, 2025 11:51 AM EDT   0 recs

Since Beckham will be picked first, let's look at the other 29

Certainly Alvarez to pirates.
Hosmer to Royals,
where from there?

by Cory Alexander on Jun 5, 2025 11:55 AM EDT   0 recs

Let's see

Baltimore - I think most anticipate that McPhail will go an arm, so likely Matusz.
San Francisco - This become the tough one. Do they go for Posey and his demands, or do they go for someone like Smoak? I’d guess Smoak.
Florida - Do they bust the pot for Posey? Perhaps, but I’d put my money on Skipworth.
Cincinnati - Probably Gordon Beckham here.
Chicago White Sox - Alonso or Posey? I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s Posey.
Washington Nationals - My guess if the picks for the way I have it? Crow or Alonso? Looking like Crow, according to some.

Houston Astros - How has Cashner worked his way up to being a possibility here (either MAyo, BA or BP suggested it, don’t remember). I still think they should go Friedrich, but somehow, a lot of folks seem to be saying a bat, and if that’s the case, maybe Alonso. Though Lawrie seems to be gaining traction.

That’s my rough top 10 guess.

The A's claim to be focusing more on the draft and not cheaping it this year

I doubt thats the case, since they will inevitably fall back to that mantra, and Baseball America and MLB sure think so as they have the A’s picking Weeks for some reason.

But I wonder, if one of the Bonus Babies falls to the A’s, will they finally take one? Its definantly a better pick than spending a million or two on the next Cliff Pennington or Jason Windsor.

by Zonis on Jun 5, 2025 12:04 PM EDT   0 recs

Just a guess

I don’t see the bonus babies falling as much as they have in the past. It seems that teams are investing more in the long term and teams that have been reluctant to spend in the past have been more willing to step up to the plate recently (See also Orioles, Royals). Even the Pirates sound like they are willing to spend the money these days.

I think there is a consensus

Of teams saying “screw the slots, Bud” this year.

Prediction

Jake Odorizzi gets selected before Tim Melville.

Now raise your goblet of rock. It's a toast to those who rock!

by Dewey Finn on Jun 5, 2025 12:32 PM EDT   0 recs

This draft will be made by 4 things...

1. How far will Posey fall? If he doesn’t go to the Giants where will he go? The Giants are thin at a lot of spots but with Pablo Sandoval in the system will they go there. If they skip on Posey where will Posey go?

2. Would the Astros rock the 1st round and take a guy that isn’t on most people’s radar in Cashner or Schreth?

3. Milwaukee Brewers with 6 picks the first 2 rounds. Will they stick to the script or will they reach for some guys?

4. Where will the first college closer go? There are now 2 possible solid first rounders, where will they go and how high?

It is going to be interesting in about a hour.

RE:

I don’t think Posey falls out of the top 10. For some reason, many are saying that the Marlins will shell out for Posey. That would surprise me (I mean, even if he comes off 12 mil, you’d imagine that it would probably be in that 7-10 mil range in the end). If not, I could see the White Sox pulling the trigger.

Cashner has been linked to the Rangers for awhile, so while I’d be surprised if the AStros took them, I don’t think it rocks the first.

There seems to be 4 pen arms that could go round 1, Cashner and then some order of Sclereth, Perry, Fields.

I think it was Law who said

That the Nolan Ryan-Cashner lovefest was false, and that Ryan had in fact never seen Cashner pitch.

i agree

I don’t see the Marlins paying that much for Posey.

Blue Jays

Any chance that Lawrie falls to the Jays? Would be a pretty popular pick in Toronto…

by bunner on Jun 5, 2025 1:16 PM EDT   0 recs

Law seems to suggest

it, as he has Lawrie dropping like a rock. That said, I don’t see it. I think a team jumps Lawrie in the early teens.

by toonsterwu on Jun 5, 2025 1:30 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

I hope but...

but I don’t think that there’s much of a chance. There would have to be a few surprises early for that to happen. I have a feeling that Wallace isn’t going to be available either.

Farnsworth: Start the ship, Leela. Let's just steal the damn radar dish and get back to our own time.
Fry: But- But won't that change history?
Farnsworth: Oh, a lesson in not changing history from Mr. I'm-My-Own-Grandpa! Let's get the hell out of here already! Screw history!

Farnsworth: You mustn't interfere with the past! Don't do anything that affects anything. Unless it turns out you were supposed to do it. In which case, for the love of God don't not do it!
Fry: Got it.
Farnsworth: If for example you were to kill your grandfather, you'd cease to exist.
Fry: (gasps) But existing is basically all I do.

I think a hitter might be able to drop...

Alonso maybe?

Alvarez

The Pirates made a great choice here. In my estimation, Alvarez and Beckham are the two premium talents in this draft (3 if Hosmer can move to RF). I can’t help shake the feeling that Alvarez is going to be a really great hitter in MLB.

Callis

Can he predict the entire first round?

by god allah star on Jun 5, 2025 2:35 PM EDT   0 recs

Hosmer

still not sure about him over Smoak. We’ll see

by playingwithfire on Jun 5, 2025 2:38 PM EDT   0 recs

Posey

I absolutely love this pick. Yes, Smoak’s got HUGE potential, but the Giants need a sure thing here, and Posey is the surest thing available in the draft at this point. There’s also the issue of positional scarcity.

PS - Is it just me or does MinorLeagueBall not have an official draft thread? Am I missing something here?

Alonso over Smoak?

First Surprise

of the draft, at least to me.

by JBagKY on Jun 5, 2025 2:51 PM EDT   0 recs

Ditto

But after swishing it around in my head a bit I rather like it. BA thinks the Reds think Votto might actually be better in LF (with YONDER ALONSO!! at first), and it frees them to trade Dunn for goodies in a year or so. I love me some Adam Dunn, but that boy isn’t really young anymore (28) and that body is, ah, not going to age well.

Why....

Alonso over Beckham? What need does Alonso fill at all? I’d hope to see Votto stick for a while.

by BobbyS on Jun 5, 2025 3:00 PM EDT   0 recs

Smoak

Anyone think Smoak might make it to the A’s?

LOL at Seattle

One of the worst teams in the league takes a reliever in the 1st round.

Detroit takes Ryan Perry

Will he stay a relief pitcher, or can he start? The Minor League Baseball scouting reports I’ve read say that he’s an enigma…

Yankees

Wow, the Yanks chose a RHP with the first pick. What a surprise.
