MLB free agent/draft question

MLB free agent/draft question:

Ok, I need to know when losing a type A free agent (CC Sabathia-Brewers,) I know they receive 1 supplementary 1st round draft pick, but do they also get the Yankees' 1st round pick as well?  If so, do the Blue Jays (AJ Burnett) receive the Yankees' 2nd round pick and the Angels (Mark Teixeira) get the Yankees' 3rd round pick?  Is this how this works?  Thanks for the help.

I don't think so

I am not positive, but I believe every team has their own 1st round draft pick (which cannot be traded either), and then teams get an additional 1st round supplementary pick which follows the 1st round.
Elias Sports Bureau is also the ones who designate what type of free agent each player is.

I am not 100% sure that I am correct, but I think that is right.

Yea, that is kind of what I was thinking as well, but I’m not sure. I know they cant deal picks, but I was thinking teams like the Brewers would get a little bit more incentive for letting their guy walk other than that one pick. Hopefully more people will weigh in.

Yeah

And on the subject of Elias, they are completely bogus. They have Michael YOung rated as one of the top players in all of baseball, but designated Milton Bradley a type B during this offseason. There are other examples of their egregious, ridiculous evaluation system, but this is the most glaring one that came to mind.

The Angels get the Yankees first round pick, and a supplemental pick

The Brewers get the Yankees second round pick and a supplemental pick

The Blue Jays get the Yankees third round pick and a supplemental pick

So...

Why do the Angels get the 1st rd pick and the Jays get the 3rd rd pick?

by TexasHeat on Dec 27, 2025 5:07 PM EST to parent up reply reply   0 recs

I'm guessing that

it’s based on the Free Agent type list. Type A etc, I’d imagine Teixeira has a higher rating than Burnett on that list, thus the higher pick. Teams only lose their first round picks if they are in the bottom half of the draft order. If they are not in the bottom half, the other team receives a 1st round supplemental. Type B FA’s are also worth a supplemental.

Yes, it's based on Elias rankings

Tex has a higher Elias FA ranking than CC, and CC has a higher FA ranking than Burnett, so that’s why the compensation picks are doled out in that manner.

Keith Law has an informative writeup on the system that he put together a couple years ago (I think this will work even if you’re not an ESPN insider):

Sort of

The top 15 picks of the first round are always protected.

If a team in the top 15 picks signs a Type A FA, they won’t lose their first rounder, but instead they’ll give up their second rounder. This is in addition to a first round supp pick for the Type A FAs.

If they are after the top 15 picks in the first, then they have to give up their first, and the team also gets a supp pick in the first supp round.

FA Compensation

When a team signs multiple Type A Free Agents, the team who lost the highest ranked Type A Free Agent will get the first pick given up the team (Round 1 if picks 16-30, Round 2 if picks 1-15). The team who the lost the second highest ranked Type A to that club will get the next round (2nd or 3rd respectively) and this will continue until all of the Type A’s a club signed are accounted for. A team losing a Type A or Type B Free Agent will also receive a first round supplemental pick regardless of where the other team ended up

Question then . . .

If a team signs a few type A free agents, but then loses a type A free agent, are the draft pick compensations re-ordered? Hypothetical situation: I don’t what rating Mussina has this year and he has said he is retiring. But what if he was an “A” and he signed with the Cardinals . . . the Yankees would get a supplemental pick and pick #19 . . . would teams that have claims on those picks from the Yankees signing their “A” free agents then move up? Would the Angels get 19, the Brewers get the Angels previous spot and the Blue Jays move up a round as soon as the signing was done or is everything locked in place at the time of the signing?

Further . . . if the hypothetical Mussina situation above went forward and the answer to the previous question was that things were locked in place . . . THEN the Yankees went and signed Manny . . . would the Dodgers get #19 or would they get a 4th rounder?

Of course I am not saying that any of these signings would actually happen . . . just using examples to flesh out the rules for compensation since they greatly confuse me.
