Weeks again.

I like Lawrie too.

Went with Lawrie here.

I’ll probably vote Taylor after him, then Weeks.

Taylor

Has already produced good numbers and has a pretty good upside.

Should be interesting to see how he does in AA next year.

I don't get all the votes for Antonelli

I’m a Padres fan and prospect-nerd and Antonelli does not seem like the second best Padres prospect. Both Kellen Kulbacki and Jaff Decker seem better to me. And most rankings have Matt Latos higher as well. Antonelli doesn’t play very good defense and had trouble with contact and power in 2008. He didn’t show the greatest power to before that either. He does have an ability to get on base and he is very athletic, but is that enough to be in consideration here?

Of course

Coughlan just got on and he looks like he won’t even be able to make it past AA. So I guess I shouldn’t set my expectations high here.

What?

Coghlan won’t make it past AA? Where in world do you get that from?

Yeah

Coghlan wont make it past AA? WTF? He just dominated AA…

Dominated?

He did well in AA but he did not dominate.

Sorta agree...

I have been calling fcor Coghlan to start getting votes since the 40s, I am a huge fan and believer. But he did not dominate. He was excellent though and did everything you want out of a future 2-hitter (maybe even lead-off). He had great plate discipline and speed on the bases while having good gap power.

Not dominant but showed many skills

He was able to walk pretty well, steal a good amount, and show off good power for a 2B with numbers that suggest future growth.

by tdot mariner fan on Dec 27, 2025 3:52 PM EST to parent up reply reply   0 recs

We'll see

I’m not sure how much more power growth he’ll have. He was way too good for the Sally League in 2007 and even then he was only on pace to hit 20 HRs over the course of a 162 game season. I find it a little hard to believe that he’s going to find much more power (if any) than the kind of numbers he put up this year.

He’s got skills, but he also reminds me a lot of a younger Ben Zobrist. His margin of error isn’t very large, as he doesn’t project to be a great glove guy or a plus basestealer at the major league level to make up for any offensive deficiencies. Even against competition that he can really work the counts against, his power doesn’t play as more than average. There are a lot of questions here that arise when you look beneath the surface.

An .825 OPS from a 2nd baseman...

Is pretty damn good. No need to argue semantics.

by hero66 on Dec 27, 2025 3:58 PM EST to parent up reply reply   0 recs

Huh?

He .786 in 2007 and .797 in 2008. I’m not math expert, but no way that adds to .825. The only time he passed an .825 OPS at any level was when he put up a .928 in his repeat of Single A. He’s had to repeat A, repeat A+ and repeat AA. Is he even going to be at AAA this year, he only had 31 ABs in AA last year and he’s going to 25 in 2009. How many times is he going to need to repeat AAA? How old will he be in his rookie year? 27? 28?

You

aren’t talking about Chris Coghlan, who was voted onto the Community List. I don’t know who you’re talking about, but it’s not the right guy. Chris Coghlan posted an OPS of .827 in AA this year, at age 23.

It’s absurd that players like Niemann aren’t on the list, while Antonelli looks to be close. The kid sucked up AAA, Niemann did well.

And yeah, I know I’ve been beating on the Niemann drum for a while now. I figure eventually somebody’s got to listen.

Jeff Niemann

Is getting really underrated here. The guy is big league ready and looks like a solid #3 SP. As much as I like some of these other guys, I’d take Niemann over them every day of the week.

I've been voting for Lambo, but I do have a known weakness for that sort of player

see, eg, Wladimir Balentien.

I’m not buying Niemann until I see it. His control is pretty poor. Still probably better than the random 2008 signees on here who haven’t done a thing in pro ball, though.

Control

3.31 BB/9 isn’t necessarily ideal, but it’s not like it’s bad or anything though. He’s had a K/BB rate of 2.5 or better in AA/AAA. Really not too much of a problem I don’t think

Sean Gallagher had a similar minor league walk rate...

and I wouldn’t exactly describe his command as refined.

Actually, from a statistical standpoint, describing Niemann as “a very old version of Sean Gallagher” sounds pretty accurate to me.

by PaulThomas on Dec 28, 2025 2:24 AM EST to parent up reply reply   0 recs

Raw stuff is a little better though

Personally I think Gallagher will figure out the command woes with experience, but Niemann has some really excellent stuff. My biggest question with Niemann is whether or not he’ll be able to handle a full season workload as a starter . . .the performance over the course of ~250 AAA innings has been quite good.

by mrkupe on Dec 28, 2025 3:54 AM EST to parent up reply reply   0 recs

I dont think so either.

He didnt show plus plus control, but it wasnt horrible, or anywhere close to poor.

Lawrie

I am wondering on what basis are people voting for Lawrie. He has yet to play a single game at catcher professionaly and there is little reason to think he will be good at or even stick at the position right now. It seems like Doug Melvin is hoping he can convert a raw player to a position of organizational, but this conversion could still go very wrong. I really like what I have seen and read about Lawrie’s offensive potential, but this ranking is a little high if it is based of him being a catcher.

Also, a Juan Carlos Ramirez tester is needed by now. Only Barnese and maybe Niemann stand above him as far as pitchers that have been tested so far.

by tdot mariner fan on Dec 27, 2025 3:40 PM EST reply reply   0 recs

error on my part

Lawrie had some experience catching with the national team and in the year before being drafted, slipped my mind. He is still pretty raw at the position though

by tdot mariner fan on Dec 27, 2025 3:48 PM EST to parent up reply reply   0 recs

Catcher?

The bat looks like it could be awfully good at just about any position. The kid hit well against guys that should have eaten him alive while he was playing with the national team.

If he ends up being a catcher, awesome. But I could see him 15-20 spots higher if he were a legit catcher right now. At this spot in the rankings, he holds up just fine as an outfielder or wherever else you might project him.

Hurley

where did Eric Hurley go, I could’ve sworn he was on here a while ago. Hes not on the list or on the testers list.

by Navi's_Navy on Dec 27, 2025 5:43 PM EST reply reply   0 recs

Not sure what happened.

My best guess is that either pinstripes or myself forgot to add him to the tester list when he failed to reach 7%. I have placed him back on the tester list.
