Hola senors and the occasional senorita. Welcome back to the one-stop shop for all the goodies when it comes to minor league baseball. Enough small talk, lets get down to it.
Game of the day honors go to Diamondbacks short stop Chris Owings. The 86th ranked prospect finished a single short of the cycle with two runs driven in and a run scored to go with his 11th double, third triple, and fourth home run. Owings is now hitting 274/316/436 in the show with a .330 wOBA, 104 wRC+, and has amassed 1.4 fWAR so far this year. He's also stolen six bases in six tries with 11 walks and 40 strike outs in 2014.
Another short stop prospect picked up a three hit game, this guy is a little more heralded though. Carlos Correa knocked his 13th double of the year, two singles, two runs scored, a run batted in, and a walk. He also stole his 15th base and made a bad throw, his seventh error of the year. Correa is now sporting a nifty .396 wOBA and 140 wRC+ out in the Cal League with a 328/399/495 slash line so far. Over his last 10 games, he has been locked in, going 17-38 with four doubles, two homers, five stolen bases, 10 runs, 13 RBI, eight walks and five punch outs. That's good for a 447/553/711 slash line and 1.264 OPS.
As long as Xander Bogaerts keeps raking, he's going to getting a whole lot of attention here. He was 2-4 with another pair of extra base hits, scoring twice with his 16th double, fifth home run, and was hit by a pitch. The Aruba native is now hitting 304/395/464 with a 140 wRC+, .380 wOBA, and 2.1 fWAR already. The fWAR is the best out of all Top 150 players in the majors, and puts him on the inside track over Jose Abreu for the AL Rookie of the Year.
The potential the Red Sox saw in Trey Ball during last year's First Year Player Draft, finally came through for a bit last night. After a seriously rough start to the year, including making a start very ill, he turned it around with five scoreless innings for Low A Greeneville. He allowed a walk and four hits with three punch outs, one ground out, and four fly outs. His ERA plummeted to 6.84 with his first appearance without giving up a run, but he did not factor in the decision and made a throwing error. It's baby steps, but he was extremely raw coming out of high school and was aggressively placed in Low A this year.
Cardinals southpaw Marco Gonzales, another 2013 draftee, worked his way through six strong innings, allowing just one run in his first start after his first whipping of the year. He surrendered four hits and a walk with seven strike outs, six ground outs and a fly out. He did not factor in the decision either, but did get his ERA down to 2.86 with a 1.05 WHIP in AA Springfield. Combined with his time in A+ Palm Beach, Gonzales has thrown 59.2 innings with a 1.96 ERA, 8.8 K/9, 2.0 BB/9, a .228 opponents batting average and 2.24 FIP.
After skipping his turn through the rotation to limit innings, Nationals pitcher Lucas Giolito made it back to the mound and dominated for three innings, striking out five with three hits allowed and no walks. The 6'6 righty now has a stellar 2.29 ERA and 1.10 WHIP with 10.4 K/9, 3.6 BB/9, and a .191 opponents batting average. His record sits at 2-0 with a 3.33 FIP, and 2.9 K/BB ratio.
