Florida High School Pitchers Drafted in the First Round, 1981-2011

Florida High School Pitchers Drafted in the First Round, 1981-2011

A few days ago, we looked at Texas high school pitchers drafted in the first round between 1981 and 2010.

I'm curious if things are different for the other two big-population, warm-weather states of Florida and California. So let's find out. Here is a list of all Florida high school pitchers drafted in the first round from '81 through '11 who signed.

Star-divide

Dwight Gooden, 1982, Mets 2801 innings, 3.51 ERA, 111 ERA+, 58.1 WAR
Rich Monteleone,1982, Tigers 353 innings, 3.87 ERA, 106 ERA+, 0.5 WAR
Joel Davis, 1983, White Sox 248 innings, 4.91 ERA, 90 ERA+, 2.8 WAR
Tony Menendez, 1984, White Sox 29 innings, 4.97 ERA, 83 ERA+, -0.4 WAR

Sam Marsonek, 1996, Rangers 1.1 innings in the majors
Geoff Goetz, 1997, Mets Did not pitch in majors
Bobby Bradley, 1999, Pirates Did not pitch in majors
Brett Myers, 1999, Phillies 1638 innings, 4.21 ERA, 100 ERA+, 18.3 WAR

Joe Torres, 2000, Angels Did not pitch in majors
Sean Burnett, 2000, Pirates 318 innings, 3.68 ERA, 112 ERA+, 1.2 WAR
Boof Bonser, 2000, Giants 417 innings, 5.18 ERA, 83 ERA+, 4.4 WAR
Zack Greinke, 2002, Royals 1336 innings, 3.77 ERA, 115 ERA+, 32.9 WAR

Eric Hurley, 2004, Rangers 25 innings, 5.47 ERA, 82 ERA+, 0.0 WAR
Chris Volstad, 2005, Marlins 625 innings, 4.78 ERA, 86 ERA+, 5.4 WAR
Colton Willems, 2006, Nationals Did not pitch in majors

Michael Main, 2007, Rangers Hasn't pitched in majors
Casey Kelly, 2008, Red Sox (SS) Drafted as a shortstop, currently in Triple-A

First round picks from the state produced two excellent pitchers in Dwight Gooden and Zack Greinke, solid contributors in Myers and D'Amico, and not much else to get excited about.

The Mets had so much talent in the early 80’s. Gooden still had a pretty good career but he could have been amazing.

As a 20 year old in '85

Gooden put up a 13 WAR season. Seriously. Since 1900, Walter Johnson is the only pitcher to put up a more impressive season and it was nearly a full win better than Carlton’s ’72 season when he won 27 games on a club that only won 59 games total. Did I mention that he was 20?

Oh I know but his drug problems certainly cut into his career a bit.
