Not sure if this was discussed the other day, but I'm wondering how people here feel about this
Ramsey signed for $1.6 million with the Cardinals, only $175,000 under slot. Most people were assuming he had some kind of pre-draft deal in place and would only go for $500-750k, considering he’s a college senior with low leverage. The deal he got was the 2nd highest for a college senior ever, behind Matt LaPorta, according to Callis.
The Cardinals still managed to sign Foody but Trey Williams obviously doesn’t look to be in the balance now, considering they are slightly over their allotted amount with only Mejia and Heyer left to make up money.
Considering the money Ramsey got I’ve heard people calling the pick the worst in the draft.
I’m wondering what people think happened. Do the Cardinals just like Ramsey more than anyone ever thought, or does the new slotting system give players some unexpected leverage, since if they don’t sign the team loses the whole budget for that slot?
I mean 1.6 seems like more than he would have gotten as a free agent, though I’m not knowledgeable enough about amateur signings to really judge that for sure.

I don't think it matters all that much in this case
The Cardinals had enough money to sign Foody and Williams was always going to have an extremely high price tag. Unless they didn’t go for Foody AND managed to sign Ramsey for next to nothing, the money just wasn’t going to be there for Williams.
Ramsey is a nice player and he certainly wasn’t a bad pick, let alone the worst in the draft. There was no way he was ever going to sign for something like $500-750k though, for two reasons. The first is that yes, he does have some leverage due to his slot value making the draft math work. The second is that the money doesn’t necessarily matter at this point for the Cardinals. They’ve signed everybody else of note in their class with the exception of Williams, so it makes sense to give what you can to Ramsey to get him on the field now. It’s not like you can roll the money over for next year.
It’s that last point that makes me think that the Houston Astros have one more big signing on the way, as they still have a good chunk of money left to spend. I think they find a way to spend it.
by mrkupe on Jun 26, 2025 10:25 PM EDT up reply actions
oh, and
The Cardinals had a strong draft. I don’t evaluate drafts based on the number of draft picks but on the quality of the picks made, and they did very well. Lots of future contributors and a couple of nice project players.
by mrkupe on Jun 26, 2025 10:30 PM EDT up reply actions
“They’ve signed everybody else of note in their class….so it makes sense to give what you can to Ramsey to get him on the field now”
Why didn’t they draft another over-slot HS kid or two and force Ramsey’s hand some more? Seems like piss-poor execution to me; over-drafting a college senior and only saving $175k on his deal? When I saw that pick made I envisioned a much more aggressive execution than what actually transpired. Hell, the Blue Jays saved more money ($250k) drafting DJ Davis; a HS outfielder who was more highly regarded than Ramsey was!
by metafour on Jun 26, 2025 10:38 PM EDT up reply actions
couldn't tell you
In retrospect maybe they could have done something like that, maybe looked at somebody who would have gotten something similar to what Foody got. I still don’t see it being that big a deal.
If there’s anything that might’ve blown the draft class up, it’s that Carson Kelly needed a huge pile of money to sign, not that Ramsey came in only slightly underslot.
by mrkupe on Jun 26, 2025 10:48 PM EDT up reply actions
doesn't work
If they don’t sign Ramsey, his entire slot budget disappears (or, to be more accurate, is punted until next year).
So the Cardinals have more money available for their remaining picks in the pool if they sign Ramsey for slightly under slot than if they don’t sign him at all.
That’s what gives Ramsey far more leverage in a situation like this than someone in his position would have had under the previous rules.
by ManConley on Jun 26, 2025 10:54 PM EDT up reply actions
right
Two very different situations if we’re comparing, say, the signability guys that the Blue Jays took in the mid-single digit rounds to Ramsey, a pretty good player whose talent demanded a much higher slot (and slot value) than those other guys.
There is still room for very good college seniors to get a nice payday.
by mrkupe on Jun 26, 2025 10:57 PM EDT up reply actions
Everyone knows this. That doesn’t change the fact that they absolutely should have been able to save more money than they did. Yes, Ramsey has leverage in that if they dont sign him they lose his entire bonus, but he’s also a college senior with next to no shot of ever matching the amount of money he’d be turning away. I’m not saying “offer him $800k, he has to take it”, I’m saying offer him $1.3-$1.4 million…is Ramsey really going to turn that down? Hell no. That extra ~$200-$300k can get you a legitimate post-10th round HS or JUCO kid for ~$300-$400k.
I dont think they executed anywhere near as well as they could have.
by metafour on Jun 26, 2025 11:07 PM EDT up reply actions
negotiations are tough
but, yes, it seems likely that Ramsey outmaneuvered the Cards here.
If Ramsey really comes out with a hardline position — give me $150K under my draft slot or I’ll go play in Idaho/Japan/whatever — how do the Cardinals respond? Do they call his bluff and risk losing both him and the little bit of extra money? Or do they give in?
I doubt this will be the last time we’ll see a “budget pick” wind up with a just-under-slot bonus. The question is how well teams will fare at deciding which guys will actually sign for significantly less than slot and which guys are willing to play chicken and risk everything on a big payday that may well be the last serious money they ever see (remember, these are “signability” picks, so they’re supposedly far from likely to get MLB money).
by ManConley on Jun 26, 2025 11:16 PM EDT up reply actions
Ramsey wasn't a traditional signability pick
He was a legitimately good and proven talent. He is very likely to make the majors . . .now, whether he fits better as a starting player or as a utility guy is up for debate, but he was considered a relatively easy sign not because of doubts about his ability, but strictly because of his senior status.
by mrkupe on Jun 26, 2025 11:20 PM EDT up reply actions
keithlaw @keithlaw
No clue. Huge overpay. RT @B_Vorhies: Why did the Cardinals sign Ramsey for that much? Did they forget to apply Econ principles to seniors?
Ted (St. Louis, MO): How surprised were you to see that Ramsey had signed so close to slot?
Jim Callis: As a senior, I thought he’d come in closer to $1.25 million than the $1.775 million pick value (he got $1.6 million). But it sounds like there were teams close behind the Cardinals willing to pay him if he got to them, so that helped.
by metafour on Jun 27, 2025 4:32 PM EDT up reply actions
Penalties much higher after 5%
Isn’t it premature to assume Williams will not sign? The Cards are frugal but I believe the penalty for the first 5% over allotment is simply 100% on the overage. If they need to find up to 4.5 million after they use up the figure MLB allowed, they’ll just have to match that amount. Draft picks don’t get revoked until a team exceeds 5%.
That and the first 100K to Williams doesn’t even figure into the equation. If Williams would accept something less than a half million, I still think the Cards would be wise to pay the tax and get the talent.
by Revilo on Jun 27, 2025 7:36 AM EDT up reply actions
If he would accept something less than half a million
He would have been picked higher and/or already signed with the Cardinals. I’d be VERY surprise if he signs for less than half a million.

His stock
zig-zagged all over the place, starting with last year and the mono-affected showcase appearances. He had a really hard time shaking the “low energy” tag, to the point that scouting reports seem to ignore his performance this spring and insist that he was disappointing. lol
I absolutely love the profile, and think there’s some power projection.
by charles wallace on Jun 27, 2025 1:10 PM EDT up reply actions
I concur
The more tape I watched of him and the more I read about him, the more I became convinced that he has exceptional talent. He’s already got very strong tools, and I think the potential is there for him to improve upon all of them. The swing is obviously gorgeous and already very consistent, rare to see out of a player his age.
As I took him in the mock draft here he is obviously one of “my guys”, but I’m a huge fan. Interesting point about the “low energy” comments as well . . .the only guy who might’ve gotten badgered more by that than Dahl did was Nick Williams. And y’know, he seems to be doing just fine so far himself. The balance seems to be rather fickle these days. On the one hand you’ve got the likes of Dahl and both notable Williamses from this draft (Nick and Trey) . . .but then on the other hand you’ve got scouts complaining about certain players being overly intense.

You know what is funny?
I give Nixa credit. I had him pegged as a no-power guy like a Ben Revere or a Dee Gordon myself but, without looking to closely and, just fixating on that “1” in the home run column in 2011.
By talking about Simmons with him, it made me look closer at his numbers and, at Andleton as a player. in just a couple of clips of him It seemed obvious to me that he had some untapped power there and, if you watch him, he does. It isn’t going to be an empty batting average. he has some decent pop, takes a walk and, can swipe a bag.

At least you were willing to reconsider
You wouldn’t believe the arguments I had with the minor league “expert” over at the Braves SBN site about Simmons offensive potential. Even though he had seen Simmons live, he was still convinced he was a slap hitter with Rey Ordonez upside on offense no matter what was pointed out to him.
by nixa37 on Jun 28, 2025 2:07 PM EDT up reply actions
That is a bit silly
.. shoot SHS above here has him projected for 7 homers a year and he has 3 in in a few weeks! Rey had 12 in a 973 game, big league career.

He has some pop
I’ve watched two of his games so far and he looks very comfortable at the plate. Right now he’s probably more of a gap hitter with 5-10 homerun power. But if he can add some weight I can see him becoming a consistant double digit homer guy.

Not sure why he is the gold standard...
I think Simmons will be a better overall player (bat and glove) than Ramirez, by quite a bit. The only edge AR will likely have in his career stats is in HR.

What kind of comp would that be, though?
He is sort of like this one guy in terms of production in this one category, except for he is not going to produce quite as well in this one category as this one other guy…?
That would officially be the worst, and least helpful, comp. ever. :)

Funny
Well, he does bat right, and play an oustanding shortstop, like Alexei. Simmons looks like he ay have better plate disciple and, ability to use his speed, as well as the home run power difference that he may (or may not) have. So, yeah, not the best comp yeah lol
How about Yunel Escobar with more sopeed and, even better defense? Perhaps another bad comp lol.

in AA, when he got hit it wasn't all that hard, and yesterday was against a very good lineup
here’s a little piece from a recent write up
Straily isn’t putting up these numbers with smoke-and-mirrors. He has added velocity the past couple of seasons and is now regularly clocked in the 91-95 MPH range with sinking action. Straily has always had a swing-and-miss slider and he has greatly improved his change-up over the past two seasons.
he’s got legit stuff, and it backs up his numbers for the most part.

Hanson
He’s not really getting too much attention but is putting up some really good numbers for a switch hitting middle IF. I wonder if there is some (2B version) Asdrubal Cabrera here. Any thoughts on upside / top 100 type rankings (if he will even make it)?
by Dfarth on Jun 27, 2025 10:10 AM EDT up reply actions
Well, at least
he’sa been discussed here. Have you seen any video/pics of him? I’m trying to remember how Cabrera was built at that age. I’m the wrong guy to ask about rankings, but I’m interested in what others think. Should be Top 100 for many at this point I expect.
by charles wallace on Jun 27, 2025 10:53 AM EDT up reply actions
No clips of Hanson
No good ones anyways, that I can find. I saw Cabrtera play in AAA, in 2006. I remember him being slower than I expected to be but, just tremendously instinctive on the bases and, in the field… great, great hands, obviously. He has been a solid shortop in the big leagues but, he would have been a wizard at second-base.
Hansen may be more quick-twitch and, actually fast, from what I hear but, he will likely never have the hands of Cabrera, few do. Who knows though, he is just a baby as far as the development process. Cabrera may be a pretty decent comp for Hansen’s future as a hitter though.

I Haven't Seen Any Video
That’s of any use. From a picture standpoint, he’s a bit of a little guy — but not tiny. Maybe think Dee Gordon and then add 15-20 pounds. He’s probably got a little bit more room on his frame for muscle but not a ton — which is part of the reason why I mentioned Asdrubal Cabrera.
Another offensive comparable that comes to mind is Coco Crisp. Although, CC never hit for the type of power that Hanson is showing right now. Maybe his ceiling is a little more…

Ray Durham
If he ends up as a second-baseman, a switch-hitting one with pop, who can get on base and can swipe a bag reminds me some of Ray Durham. However, Hansen is ahead of the game there, as a hitter. He is more advanced and, has more power, than Durham did at that age.
For me right now he would go pretty highly. I am more impressed than most on young ballplayers who have shown they can hit in full-season ball, and Hansen has nice athleticability to surround his advanced bat. Its just me put I’d say there aren’t more than 30 future talents in the minor leagues right now. Crazy, I know but, I believe.

My outlook
Is firstly, guys in the minors who project to hit major league pitching are few… then the ones who are young for thier level are even better … then if they project to play anywhere in the middle of the diamond even more….add to that speed and a good idea at the plate.
After that, I look for reasons not to like the player, moslty as an athlete and, i don’t see anything there to not like. Then, add to all of that, some fairly unexpected and impressive power, at such a young age and, you’ve got a hell of a prospect eh?
I am pretty on record that guys liken these, in general, are better future bets than the standard “close to the majors” top prospect. this is not because I do not value proximity. It is because the proximity to the majors is often an illusion. Turns out Devin Mesoraco, Dom Brown, Yonder Alonso weren’t closer to helping a big league club as some thought .
The standard refrain is “i want to wait ’til a guy like this hits at AA ball before i rank him highly” me, I roll the dice and , they are usually a better gamble than a 22 year old player in AA or a, 23 year old one in AAA.

"Then, add to all of that, some fairly unexpected and impressive power,"
Which, for a 5’10" 150 pound second baseman, is unattainable at a higher level.
On first glance, his numbers look pretty good, but his peripherals tell a different story.
He’s not yet 20 so he’s worth following for awhile, but I don’t see anything that screams “star”.
by mlbprospectpulse on Jun 27, 2025 1:00 PM EDT up reply actions
Which peripherals scare you?
I guess the K rate is not ideal but it isn’t horrible. I think I’m a little closer to Case in the sense that I can overlook the K rate if the overall profile is attractive enough. He’s basically got 40 XBH and 20 SB through 70 games (on pace for 80+ XBH and 40+ SB over the approximate course of a full season). Obviously, he’s not going to do that at the MLB level but even if he tails off some in the second half I think he’s done enough to cause reason to believe the bat will play at higher levels.
If you go deeper, he doesn’t show significant platoon splits (1.066 OPS vs. lefties and .934 OPS vs righties) and his stats haven’t fluctuated wildly over the season (OPS of 1.137 in April, .863 in May, .883 in June) or at home vs on the road (1.070 at home and .863 on the road). Again, I think you have to start at least acknowledging that the bat may play at higher levels.
by Dfarth on Jun 27, 2025 3:03 PM EDT up reply actions
First month of the season he hit .412,
last two months he’s at .275.
He’s 19-32 in SB attempts.
He came into the season with 4 career HR in over 500 PA’s, and now has 11 in just over 300? For a guy who weighs 150 pounds? That’s a fluke.
In the same regard, he had 73 career K’s coming into the year and is now at 66, he’s on pace for 131 which IS alarming for a slap hitter.
His other XBH are speed hits, so we have to take his XBH rate with a grain of salt.
He’s a 2B only because of his arm, so that knocks him down for me.
He’s hitting .359 with RISP.
If he’s doing this next year at age 20 in Double A, then I will climb on the bandwagon, but I’m not going there yet.
by mlbprospectpulse on Jun 27, 2025 3:46 PM EDT up reply actions
Interesting
I guess I’d respond by saying:
- .275 is pretty good when taking out a hitter’s best month
- It’s not at all uncommon for a young base stealer to be maturing. I certainly don’t think he’s Billy Hamilton but something in the 60 speed range (20-25 sb at the MLB level) seems reasonable.
- I don’t think you can hold a 17-18 yr old’s rookie league stats against them. I am guessing that his height/weight numbers are from when he signed and, like 90% of minor leaguers, are not totally accurate.
- Agree that his k rate is a little high. Way too early to conclude he’s a slap hitter though.
- How in the world do you know that his non HR xbh are fluky? He has 11 HR and 9 3B in approximately 300 plate appearances. Even if half of his 2B were speed related, that’s still a very nice XBH rate.
- Agree he’s prob a second baseman in the long run.
- His avg with RISP? Who cares? I’m not saying he’s good because of his RBIs.
I guess we will ultimately wait and see but I think you are being a bit ridiculous to totally dismiss his performance thus far.

But there’s no guarantee that rest/strengthening exercises will have an impact. He could go out, throw his first pitch, feel the twinge more severely, and have to punt.
