Call to the Pen ‏@CalltothePen
Trevor Bauer still scheduled to start for Reno today which means a call-up before the ASG seems unlikely. #Dbacks
Chris Gabel, RGJ.com ‏@RGJ_Aces
Aces’ Bauer will make scheduled start today at Salt Lake. He could pitch for #Dbacks on Friday or Saturday, though, if they go that route.

This is the one time I don't want him to pitch! lol

But it wouldn’t be the worse thing ever. Skaggs would be awesome too and I’d still look forward to Bauer in the Futures Game.

I doubt Skaggs gets the call

Sadly it will probably be Collmenter or Corbin again.

for Francisco Lindor stealing a pair, getting on twice with a single and a walk. That’s his first stolen bases in a while (outside the all-star game), meanwhile his 11th walk in his last 8 games (6 in one contest of course)

I think

the call-up is going to be good for him. Should have a much better idea of what adjustments he needs to make, and he acquitted himself well. He’s probably never going to walk much, so it’s really important to control the strikeouts and keep his contact rate viable. Hopefully he left with some confidence.

by playingwithfire on Jun 24, 2025 6:22 PM EDT reply actions

And

Schoop’s one glaring flaw in his minor league game in his seasons has been the poor BB/K ratio. This year shows a slight decrease actually, and if he’s to be called up next year, he’ll need to improve it because a 6% walk stat is not good.

by oriolekid on Jun 24, 2025 6:30 PM EDT up reply actions

he’s still exhibiting the same weaknesses as he did last year. it’s not the poor bb:k ratio, it’s the not being able to hit breaking balls.
there’s still some time for him to learn. he’s still only 21, and in double-a. but i think a more realistic eta for him is call up in 2014, with a job hopefully in 2015.

Here is part of what Ben Bader wrote:

Mejia proved extremely polished for his age, ranking sixth in the DSL with a 1.42 ERA and third in walks per nine innings (0.95). He’s so advanced that the Giants are skipping him over the Arizona League and the short-season Northwest League, sending him straight to a full-season assignment in low Class A Augusta to open the year. Much like Colorado’s Jayson Aquino, Mejia is a lefty who used an average fastball that he spots extremely well for his age to pick apart DSL batters. His fastball ranges from 88-93 mph and he complements it with a changeup that he throws with good arm speed and is advanced for his age. Since his amateur days he’s thrown a slurvy curveball that needs work, but he’s also introduced a slider into his repertoire as well.

he has a point

Rickay was my all-time favorite ballplayer but, he was banged up a bit in his career. It can take a toll on your hands and legs for sure. But hey, Hamilton is 21 years old! He can be cautious later. He is in the prime of his base-swiping life right now.

"The worst things that you say sound better than the best things that some other people say" - Hannah Horvath

by casejud on Jun 25, 2025 3:07 PM EDT up reply actions

dont see how it takes a toll?

then you have either never played baseball or just was never a base stealer. Im not saying its as taxing as constantly getting hit by a linebacker on a crossing route, but the sliding and diving into bases can easily bruise fingers, hands, wrists, shoulders, ankles, legs etc. Then you take into consideration contact with a middle infielder covering the base, bruises from the slides, and bad throws by catchers where the baseball hits you as you are sliding into the base.

Point is, over the course of a LONG season, all that takes a toll on your body. All im saying is, if Im the GM of the Reds, I dont need to see Billy Hamilton stealing over 100 bases in A ball or AA. We get the point, he is fast and can steal a base…save it for the major leagues.

by miraclemets on Jun 25, 2025 4:05 PM EDT up reply actions

So...

Promote him?

Don’t get a guy off his groove when he’s rolling. That’s like saying “Pitcher, save your velocity for the majors. Throw upper 80s so that when you hit the majors you still have all those 94 MPH fastballs.” It doesn’t work that way.

by kicker31 on Jun 25, 2025 7:05 PM EDT up reply actions

not really

im not telling the guy to run half speed, or not steal at all…which would be how you perceived it given your pitcher analogy. There is nothing wrong with limiting the amount of bases he is allowed to steal, for the sake of his own body, for now. Cap him to like 60 lol

by bdlugz on Jun 25, 2025 9:35 AM EDT up reply actions

I was joking

.. Oscar is awesome bdlugz

in my opinion, the three best hitters in the minor leagues are Wil Myers, OscarTaveras, and Anthony Rendon… if he ever gets his health together. Profar is pretty close as well, and Castellanos may be close as well.

I try to be objective because I have such love for OT and, had no reservations about him when other did but, there is a possibiolity that he may be a better major league hitter than the other two guys I mentioned.

Rendon hasn’t played much yet and the health issues. Myers took a while to fighuire out AA ball. Oscar hasn’t even really had a serious slump this year, despite being pushed to what most thought would be his limits this year. he has been amazing and, amazinghly consistent.

As for an argument against Taveras, look no further than Springfield’s park factors. It is incredibly hitter friendly for LHH. Taveras probably does have a strong case as the top hitting prospect, but I don’t think it’s close to the slam dunk you seem to think,

by jarjets89 on Jun 25, 2025 11:08 AM EDT up reply actions

It's a terrible point Nix

..no offense… not angry… smiling, see? :)

Question: Why in the world would some small sample size park effect, in a sample of 34 games for Oscar, effect the quality of how good of a prospect he is? Sounds like another grasp at straws or, new fetish of somekind. I actually don’t think you have a walk fetish anymore, more of a saberfetish lol.

Lety’s keep it simple here okay? He hits, and hits, and hits . . wherever he is at. He does this whether he is in a pitchers league, a pitchers park, or a hitters league, and a hitters park … and regardless if all the pitchers are older and more experienced than him, which they always are.

Nit-picking his home park is silliness imo, especially since there is no effect on his statistics. He has a .310 .371 .600 line in his 38 road games, with 9 of the 15 long bombs.

We're talking about crowning him the best hitting prospect in the minors

Of course we should be nitpicking things like park factors (which aren’t SSS, they are based on years worth of data) when we’re splitting hairs on something like that. And where did I say he wasn’t the best hitting prospect in the minors? I just pointed out a potential argument to someone who didn’t seem to think there was any possible argument out there.

by nixa37 on Jun 25, 2025 3:06 PM EDT up reply actions

If you don't think it is a good argument

.. then why throw it out as an argument? I think it is a terrible argument, thats all.

I’m not a stat fetishist, so i don’t know but, any experts out there know if the stat-corner park effects are based on more than this seasons data?
Or, did you use a park effect from a different source?

Besides, there is no effect anyways. He has had 652 PA’s over the past two years, slashed him some .356 .413 .588, while being a baby for his league. he has only played 34 of his 150 games in that park, AND he hasn’t actually hit any better than he normally does in that park.

I can appreciate you throwing it out there as an argument against him, if you are just throwing it out there for discussion. Well, I’m discussing it … and, attempting to shoot it down. It doesn’t fly to me any more than his walks in his first 80 at bats did.

"The worst things that you say sound better than the best things that some other people say" - Hannah Horvath

by casejud on Jun 25, 2025 3:22 PM EDT up reply actions

They're from statcorner

And they are based on years worth of data. I already told you this. I’m not going to lie just to try and improve my argument.

Saying there is no effect is asinine. If your home park is incredibly hitter friendly, it helps you, irrespective of how you perform on the road. It’s not like I said he was a creation of his home park or anything, but if we’re comparing Taveras and Myers I’m certainly going to consider Taveras home park just like I consider Taveras being 1.5 years younger and Myers repeating the league.

by nixa37 on Jun 25, 2025 3:30 PM EDT up reply actions

I didn't say you were lying

I didn’t even think it. i was just wondering if you were accurate and, I am still not sure. I’m sceptical. I still think it is data from this season. it is very difficult to have a park factor of 170 over a period of years. It doesn’t sound right to me, that’s all.

To me, you are throwing things out there but, you aren’t weighing thier significance of them. That is what I am doing - the same with the early season walk data I’m familiar with park-effected data but, I don’t see any evidence of it here.

"The worst things that you say sound better than the best things that some other people say" - Hannah Horvath

by casejud on Jun 25, 2025 3:39 PM EDT up reply actions

good god case, OT won't mind if you don't defend him just this one time ;)

The question is: Do you think that one could argue Myers is the better hitter in the minors? Because the statement being argued is that no-one can argue Taveras is the best hitter in the minors.

Do you think Taveras is the best hitter and there is no argument? Or are you just keeping the love alive?

As far as your question, I think there are hitters who may hit for more power in the bigh leagues and, maybe someone who is a better pure hiter but, i don’t think there is anyone who has a better combination of both.

I think Myers, Oscar, and Rendon are the best three . . ;. and Profar is close as a pure hitter. Machado is a great prospect but, I think it is obvious that he isn’t close to Taveras as a hitter. As much as I love OT, I ranked him 8h before the season, not #1.

i do think he is better than 8 now though and, my ranking of Myers at 15 was too low, obviously.

It sounds like everyone thats commented on the argument

Thinks Taveras is the best hitting prospect in the minors…I understand there are arguments that can be made for other guys, but so far none of them are as strong as the argument in favor for OT being the top hitter

by jarjets89 on Jun 25, 2025 4:56 PM EDT up reply actions

don't put me in that category ;)

I would take Myers and Machado over OT. It might be cool to be hating on Machado but he’s still going to be a huge star in Baltimore.

by pedrophile on Jun 25, 2025 7:17 PM EDT up reply actions

I wouldn't put Rendon there

I want to see the power in wooden bats. Profar is there as a pure hitter but his power will be a fair bit below all of those guys.

I think Profar will be the type of hitter everyone was expecting Ackley to be.
