Fernando Martinez waived by Mets
Via Rotoworld- According to Adam Rubin of ESPNNewYork.com, the Mets have placed former top prospect Fernando Martinez on waivers.
Wow. I know that his development has stalled but he's only 23 years old and there's plenty of untapped potential here I think, I have to think that he'll get claimed by a number of teams. Anyone else as surprised by this as I am? As an Astros fan, I would love to see them take a stab at F-Mart and see if he can work into a platoon with the late-blooming Brian Bogusevic in right field.

Knees are a problem...
He’s suffered numerous knee injuries, to the point that he is doubtful to play the OF more than a couple of years, and should be relegated to LF for range purposes. He might still have a decent stick, but he needs to be a DH part-time to save his knees.

very well might be true
but regardless, i was very surprised the mets just flat out dropped him. he could be a nice reclamation project for the astros, he could play in AAA or be a platoon guy in the bigs this year, and then become a part time corner outfielder/DH in 2013 with the move to the AL.

Watching top prospects fail is one of the more depressing things in baseball

This does not make sense to me
The Mets are not a contending team with a lot of depth, they are not a team with a loaded system that has too many on the 40 man roster.
While it’s fair to believe FMart will be a bust any GM adept at roster management, especially for a non contending team, would find a way to keep him.

Twins
If his knees aren’t totally shot, Twins might make a good home. Doumit might get the majority of the DH ABs, but if F-Mart has anything left, he could DH and play a corner OF position as a backup. Probably better than Rene Tosoni and comparable to Plouffe (which I guess is a reason they may not…)

I bet he will be claimed. Maybe the Twins, but he screams Oakland Athletics.
