(Fantasy) - Keep Which Prospect?

In my 12 team head to head points league, we can keep three prospects (less than 300 AB/100 IP). My options are pretty stacked - Machado, Profar, Trout, Shelby Miller, Lawrie, and J.Montero. While I like Machado and Profar, it really comes down to keeping three of Trout, Miller, Lawrie, and Montero. I'm pretty much locked in on Trout and Miller (pitching is pretty important in this league) but am torn between Lawrie and Montero.

What do you think?

down on trout?

or do you just like those three that much?

i dont see trout hitting for much power

He will steal and help in other areas, but of’s are easy to find.

I like the position scarcity, that keeping a 3b and catcher will offer. I also believe both are elite overall fantasy guys.

of’s are easy to find.

but good ofs are VERY hard to find. Trout should be a 10-15 HR guy (with a few years of 20-25). Given everything else he does, that’s a possible top-5 OF in his prime.

two cents

in a 12 team league, montero fades in value just due to the great bats available at 1b. fielder, tex, pujols, votto, adrian, berkman, hosmer, butler, etc.

3b and ss remain thin, so i’d take a potential star there instead, assuming not too much more risk.

if you’re locked in on trout and miller, then i’d keep lawrie next if you want lower risk, machado or profar if you can stomach more. see if you can snag a smoak, laporta, morales, etc guy who could break out and deliver the kind of numbers you’d hope for from montero.

Why not

Keep Lawrie as your 3B and then keep all of them?

by ajake57 on Jan 16, 2026 1:48 PM EST reply actions

not a bad idea

but as far as my major league keepers, I’m planning on keeping Cabrera, Carlos Gonzalez, Verlander, Price, McCutchen, and Lester.

I’d probably favor Lawrie slightly over Montero (3B elig, better home park) but I’ve always been a big fan of Montero’s offensive potential too.

Lester

I’d take Lawrie over Lester, personally, as your Major League 3B, ’cause is so shallow and you could draft/auction some very good starters.

I'm surprised

That the vote is a complete and utter blowout. 41-1? Lawrie’s park and position give him an edge, and he’s no slouch with the bat, but Montero is still a guy Sickels thinks could be “one of the leading hitters in baseball over the next decade.” I wonder if this would have been closer if Montero was still a Yankee.

I was slightly leaning towards Lawrie anyway, but this doesn’t leave me with much to think about.

Drop Miller

keep the bats.

I have to agree

It’s a 12 team mixed league (and not a very competitive one at that from looking at your roster). In a 12 team mixed league you can find pitching under a rock. Keep the bats.

I didn't have a good year

and sold off a lot of other parts to get that keeper group. Not an indication of the league.

Trades

I’d keep Lawrie without a doubt. My next would probably be Trout. From there on out, it would depend on what kind of deals I can get for the other guys. If there are no deals to be made, decide who you like more between Profar and Machado. They’re the only SS prospects worth talking about, and I don’t tend to take pitching prospects very seriously, especially if you have Verlander, Price, and Lester already.

SS

I agree, I’d keep Trout, Lawrie and a SS. Pitching prospects are dangerous commodities.

Trade?

Machado or Profar would catch a good return on a player in a trade. Could you trade any now for an upgrade for your Major League roster?

by JoelGuzman'sScout on Jan 17, 2026 1:42 AM EST up reply actions

Huh, I thought the poll would be closer.

It’s certainly a difficult choice in my opinion. I think if you believe Montero will have C eligibility for a few seasons, then he would be the choice since he likely has the better bat. If not, I’d go Lawrie, but in the end it really depends on your league’s rules for positional eligibility (though for what it’s worth I heard the Mariners will at least initially try Montero at catcher).

As an aside, I’d keep Profar if I were you. I like him better than everyone you mentioned except maybe Trout.

by WhyGodWhy on Jan 16, 2026 10:07 PM EST reply actions

yeah

Yeah, going by the vote, you’d think I asked if I should keep Lawrie or a guy like Trevor Plouffe, not another A grade guy like Montero. I’m genuinely stunned at the vote, but appreciate the feedback.

I’m pretty sure Montero will be a DH before too long, but my league does have 2 utility spots (DHs can go there). But like I said, I was already (slightly) favoring Lawrie but I didn’t see as a 92-7% kind of thing to say the least.

Probably the hardest thing for people outside of this league to understand is the value of pitchers is higher than a normal 12 team league, so while pitching prospects are dangerous, if you can keep a potential #1/2 starter, you usually almost have to. Especially if the guy is in the mid/high minors as is. The kinds of pitchers typically in FA in a 12 team league are usually owned here.

Harper/Moore

Why don’t you talk to the guys who have Harper and Moore - maybe they would trade them for two of your prospects. From what you say, there’s no advantage in having more than three minor leaguers, so try packaging them up to get an upgrade.
