Updated: My MLB Mock Draft

Update: Since my mock draft was more geared at guessing draft picks, I decided to add a "big board" with my top 10 in order and some reasoning why here.

First, I'd like to throw it out there that this is my first mock draft ever, so please bear with me. Without any more chit-chat, here's my mock draft.

03. Mariners - Devin Marrero

04. Orioles - Lucas Giolito

Much more detailed (two paragraphs each) write-ups for each draft pick can be seen here. I'm not a fan of tooting my own horn, but I did put in substantial effort into this, so feedback, either here or on my site, would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, hope y'all enjoy.

Mariners.

In your explanation you pointed to org depth as the reason why. I was wondering then what you thought of Nick Franklin? While one player shouldn’t be enough to divert an organization from drafting someone they also drafted Marcus Littlewood recently.

My favorite pick for them at this time is Buxton.

by tarheels24 on Jan 15, 2026 8:11 PM EST reply actions

I'm

a fan of Franklin, but he’s not good enough for me to pass on Marrero for a guy like Buxton. I think they’d prefer to see the Twins take Marrero giving them a chance at Zunino, but I don’t think Montero has much as a chance at catcher honestly.

Brad Miller

They just took a college bat at SS last year

by smokeymcpots on Jan 16, 2026 12:28 AM EST up reply actions

I think it's a solid mock

But I don’t think Barrett and Stroman are gonna be 1st round picks. They both project to be relievers and I think at the best they’re taken late in the sandwich round.

I personally like the Gallo pick for the Brewers, but it’s not as if there’s a gaping hole at 1B for them. They still have Gamel who still has plenty of pop in his bat and only needs more playing time. And he’s still pretty young too. But I guess a fallback option is nice.

Go ahead, make my day.

by ilikeburritos on Jan 15, 2026 8:18 PM EST reply actions

While

I agree about relievers; they shouldn’t be picked in the first round, but one or two of those guys who looks like a future reliever always seem to get picked.

by McCutchenIsTheTruth on Jan 15, 2026 9:08 PM EST up reply actions

Oh and one more thing:

I don’t think Fried falls all the way to #17. I think he is a top 10 talent and doesn’t fall beyond #15.

Go ahead, make my day.

by ilikeburritos on Jan 15, 2026 8:23 PM EST reply actions

I agree

but the way my mock shaped up it was either him or Weickel at #10. Fried could go at #10 instead of #17 and Weickel at #17 etc.

by McCutchenIsTheTruth on Jan 15, 2026 9:12 PM EST up reply actions

A lot can change between now and June

But barring injury or a major loss of stuff, I can;t fathom the Jays passing on Fried if he’s there. I tend to agree that he’ll probably be gone by 17, but he’d fit right in with what AA does. As a Jays fan, I’d be thrilled to end up with him.

by MjwW on Jan 15, 2026 9:21 PM EST up reply actions

Jays Picks

Thanks for the mock. I like Fried at 17, but at 22 I would find it difficult to pass on Dahl or Cechinni for Diekroeger, as I think they will be the better players long term.

Also, do you think you could do a mock including the Sandwich round? I think there’s enough talent among the top 60 to make a pretty good one.

Check out mlbdraftguide. It’s a great resource,

I'm considering

doing the supplemental round once its set. Few free agents still need to sign.

by McCutchenIsTheTruth on Jan 16, 2026 5:57 PM EST up reply actions

Yep

it surprised me as well, but I just went one-by-one and that’s what happened. The O’s could pounce on Buxton, but that would leave the Cubs Giolito possibly. The Royals or Mariners could always take one of those two high school guys. Who knows, right?

by McCutchenIsTheTruth on Jan 15, 2026 9:11 PM EST up reply actions

I think Buxton goes top three

I could see Marrero falling out of the top five.

by cookiedabookie on Jan 16, 2026 4:25 PM EST up reply actions

Agreed, which worries me. I would love for the Cubs to end up with Buxton, but I think he goes to Seattle.

Marrero, however, I don’t really want as a Cubs fan at #6. He’s probably my least favorite of the potential top 15 or so.

by bdlugz on Jan 16, 2026 4:45 PM EST up reply actions

Great Job

on the amount of time and effort you put into this one. Its really early and I think its hard to get much consensus on draft position. I always respect people that put a ton of time and effort into this type of thing and puts a solid writeup with each selection instead of just a random list.

With all that said I wouldn’t be thrilled at this point with the Cards 2 picks that you have. Also I would say the Cards have some decent C depth and some solid regular types in their farm. Cody Stanley, Audry Perez and I’m not ready to give up on Bryan Anderson especially since Matheny is a big supporter of his. With all that said none of these guys are all-star caliber.

Thanks

man. That deep in the draft it gets even harder and this is already like throwing darts while blindfolded and drunk so don’t sweat it, even though I’m sure you aren’t.

by McCutchenIsTheTruth on Jan 15, 2026 9:17 PM EST up reply actions

One note

In our write-up on Jake Barrett to the Cards at 19, you note “As such, it’s an unprotected pick, so it makes sense to go the college route.”

My understanding is that under the new CBA, you if fail to sign a draft pick you get it back in the next year’s draft (and if that pick fails to sign, the following year as well, unlike under the old CBA). SO that pick would be 2012 protected, no?

Likewise, my understand is the Jays pick at 21 gets the same treatment under the new CBA, so if they don’t sign their draftee in 2012, they’d get one final crack in 2013 at 21, so they could go prep again this year without fear.

Great job overall!

by MjwW on Jan 15, 2026 9:26 PM EST reply actions

I knew

that, but I was under the impression that doesn’t go into effect until 2013. Could be wrong though. Either way, it’s still not infinitely protected, so signability will be a slight issue to consider.

by McCutchenIsTheTruth on Jan 15, 2026 9:37 PM EST up reply actions

And

thanks for the kind words! Bit busy right now, but I’ll try and research that CBA issue here in a minute.

by McCutchenIsTheTruth on Jan 15, 2026 9:38 PM EST up reply actions

Great job

I know its early but i want to say I don’t forsee Gavin Cecchini falling past #22 and the Blue Jays.

I think in time his stock will only rise.

This is really good

I’ve always been turned off by mocks as soon as I read the words “X will be leaving as a free agent next season” because that is not how teams draft. You understand this as well as some of the organizational philosophies (Phillies: raw toolsy athletes, Twins: high floor college P, Tigers: Signability droppers, and many more) that can help determine picks. I’m also 100% with you about Giolito, I know it’s never been done before but I think he has a shot to go to the Astros.

by peachesnnuts on Jan 15, 2026 9:47 PM EST reply actions

As much as i like the mccullers choice

i think the a’s go for college, as has been their MO since billy beane took over. Somebody who could be ready for a new stadium by 2014/15, but i do think they might go for higher upside sometime in the second or supplemental round

if chris beck, mike wacha, or victor roache are on the board, i think they go for one of them

Hello, i am inigo montoya, you took my stadium, prepare to die

Also

good job on the mock draft, a lot of those picks make sense

Hello, i am inigo montoya, you took my stadium, prepare to die

by guessatomo on Jan 15, 2026 10:03 PM EST up reply actions

I was thinking the same thing

The A’s have targeted more toolsy draft picks lately, but they still have a pretty strong tendency to draft college players in the first round. I’d be surprised if they went for a HS pitcher who seems pretty raw. I think your suggestions look pretty good, and I could also see the A’s looking at Richie Shaffer. Beane seems to have come to the conclusion that the only way the A’s can get a power hitter is through the draft.

by OkayJay81 on Jan 16, 2026 3:08 AM EST up reply actions

True words

And also, it’s more likely that a high schooler will drop a round or two due to signability (a la daniel norris, josh bell, aj cole, etc) so the a’s could nab a high-upside talent that way

in a draft of the decade type of year i could see it

But in a year where the draft prospects don’t seem to be as quality / high as 2 out of the last 3 years.

I’d be more than mildly suprised if Teams didn’t obey Selig and the CBA.

Josh Elander, REALLY?!

I’m just messing with you. I literally know nothing about this year’s draft. But I would like if the BPA is a hitter, especially if he’s a catcher, since we are thin in that area.

Braves

There is only one pick I would consider bad and that is a reliever. Yeah they have a track record of being hard to predict but they also have been able to draft good relievers in the 3rd round or later. For most positions you could say they are drafting for 5 years from now and not on the needs of the current team but first round relievers are generally considered the closest to the majors. Stroman wouldnt even be the best closer prospect in the organization, Vizcaino is only 1 year older and already in the majors.

I dont have a problem with the braves taking a pitcher, by the time that pitcher makes the majors the current young guns will be getting close to free agency. Assuming I could only pick from players 21 and later Lucas Simms jumps out at me as the best bet to be picked. Simms combines everything the braves love, projectable pitcher, HS pitcher, and being born in Georgia. Add in plus athleticism and I bet the scouting director gets an a boner just thinking about drafting him. If he could hit the ball 600 feet but had a hole in his swing that a 747 could fly through then he might even have to change his pants too.

As I keep reading I found another Georgia native Duane Underwood who apparently plays a position named after himself. Anyone with a position named after them must be pretty special.

Not trying to hate, just tryin to educate.

by cajunrevenge on Jan 16, 2026 2:26 AM EST reply actions

Hahaha

Thanks for finding that typo. I generally agree with your reasoning. I have no real feel for how the Braves will go, so I just took a total stab in the dark. Sims looks good as well.

by McCutchenIsTheTruth on Jan 16, 2026 2:30 AM EST up reply actions

if Gavin Cecchini is around (and he is in this mock)

then the Braves would probably take him. They might not SIGN him, but position players are at a premium for the Braves now. While he plays SS, he is a bigger guy (6’2") who probably moves off of SS to 3B.

by JoelGuzman'sScout on Jan 16, 2026 5:13 AM EST up reply actions

But

I could also see Brinson, Gallo and Dahl to the Braves as well.

by JoelGuzman'sScout on Jan 16, 2026 5:18 AM EST up reply actions

Shaffer at 15 was pretty unexpected

I see him more as a 1st round supplemental pick. Zimmer looks like an early second rounder to me.
My current highest ranked player not here is Taylore Cherry. Also in my top 30: Hunter Virant, Jesse Winker, Ty Hensley, and Rio Ruiz.
But overall, a very good mock, with some guesses at the guys who fall and the surprise picks.

by cookiedabookie on Jan 16, 2026 4:23 PM EST reply actions

An I love Underwood to the Yankees

But knowing their recent drafts, they will pick someone like Fernelys Sanchez.

by cookiedabookie on Jan 16, 2026 4:29 PM EST up reply actions

Kyle Zimmer is someone I hope falls to the A's in the supplemental round

It would be interesting to see them going all local in the first/supp. first with Kenny Diekroger (if he has a really impressive spring), Kyle Zimmer, and Stephen Piscotti haha

I really like Hunter Virant

I think his stock will rise throughout the year.

by bdlugz on Jan 16, 2026 4:58 PM EST up reply actions

I will go to my grave saying that Hou is going to

…. take Lucas Giolito. The “they don’t need to f-up this pick” reason doesn’t sound like good reasoning. Lunhow drafted Shelby Miller, a HS hard throwing right hander in the 1st round with the Cards, granted it was the 19th pick but I guess that pick has worked out well.

If Apple doesn’t dominate with his stuff this season then its no ball-game. If he does what Cole did and dominate a bit then ok I’ll agree but I won’t crown him now.

But agree with you on your points.

they should take someone other than Appel but I think Appel will show enough to stick at the top spot.

It's so hard to tell right now

Fun to speculate though.

by OremLK on Jan 17, 2026 4:02 AM EST up reply actions

Maybe

Luhnow drafted Miller, but he also drafted Wong over Guerreri in ‘11. Back in ’10, he took Cox (to be fair, Castellanos was the only bigger-name HS player who went anywhere close to their pick), and Wallace in ’08 (with guys like Hicks, Martin, and Lawrie going right after their pick). I’d say, right now, that the spot is Appel’s to lose, but if he doesn’t show progress and Giolito becomes Dylan Bundy, it could get interesting.

Will Correa be a top 5 pick? or how about top 3?

I have a feeling come June he’ll be up for that considertion.

We're going to be updating the lists to reflect the mid top 15 trades after Darvish signs/doesn't sign

We were going to run it today, but it didn’t make sense to release updates a day before the Darvish decision. Organizational rankings will be later in the week as well. The top 100 should begin next week.

I wouldn't

be surprised if he does. Bold words, but I think he’ll end up being closer to a Machado type draft prospect than a Lindor type draft prospect.

by McCutchenIsTheTruth on Jan 17, 2026 12:50 PM EST up reply actions

and Lindor's top 25 for some people

which is saying a ton about Machado and, by extension, Correa.

Agreed

although I’d say Lindor is more in the 30-40 range for me.

agreed I like LIndor a lot, he's the closest thing to a lock at SS for a guy in rookie ball out there.

But he’s in the 40-60’s range for me overall.

maybe top 20-25 bat type, if you’re sticktly looking at offensive players

If the Astros don’t pick Giolito, I can’t see him making it past the Twins. But I bet the Mariners and Orioles are eager to agree with you.

I’d agree the Twins should take Giolito, but that hasn’t seemed to be their MO lately, although there have been some leadership shake-ups. That said, they haven’t picked this high in a while, so who really knows.

by McCutchenIsTheTruth on Jan 17, 2026 4:11 PM EST up reply actions

The sleeper pick I could see being Michael Choice.2

Adam Brett Walker, bleacher report had him going late in the first round, but because of strikeouts i see him going in the supplemental or 2nd round

the guy has massive power (over 1.000!!! slg. both full college seasons and his summer league) and he’s been perfect (21/21) on stolen bases. He could be a steal for someone.

Same with nolan fontana, and brandon thomas if they drop to the second or third round

by guessatomo on Jan 17, 2026 4:45 PM EST reply actions

Saw him a few times on the Cape this summer.

Fun player to watch and can put on a show during bp. He does have a long swing with some inconsistent mechanics and he’s a big kid who won’t have premium athleticism… but he does have lots of power and seemed like a hard worker and nice kid. I don’t know if I see him as a 1st round talent, but he could very well end up better than expected. Jacksonville doesn’t typically play the toughest level of competition, so those numbers are a little suspect.

Fontana and Thomas are two personal favorites of mine I got to see a good amount of and very much agree with those two. Two guys who lack real flashy tools but are well rounded guys who play hard.

Fontana I could see going back end of 1st round supplemental

Thomas second round, and Walker end of second/top of third round.

by cookiedabookie on Jan 17, 2026 8:48 PM EST up reply actions

I actually think it goes

Fontana early second round, walker unknown because he has a ton of talent just so many questions that it really hinges on his performance this spring, and thomas early mid second round
