RE: Kyle Seager

What are your thoughs on Martin Prado being a comp for his offensive potential? .300 avg, 10+ HR, 10-15 SB, but with a better OBP.

by John Black on Jul 7, 2025 6:22 PM EDT via mobile reply actions

I doubt he will average that many stolen bases a year

And I think he’s gonna be more in the 5-10 range of homeruns.

In fact, it looks like his day is already done. And it was a little rough.

The guy who replaced him promptly gave up a double to the first batter while the bases were loaded, Martinez clearly would have struck that dude out so all is well!

Hope this doesn't rub off on him for the futures game...

even though he’ll only throw an inning max…if that, it’s still throwing on only 2 days rest - especially since he’ll probably be throwing mostly for the radar gun at that game. Don’t want the kid to hurt himself.

by rdf8585 on Jul 7, 2025 9:49 PM EDT up reply actions

Eovaldi is the dodgers top pitching prospect and evaluators and prospectors need to start taking notice. He should be a top 50 prospect in baseball right now.

-ideal pitchers frame
-power arsenal with the big mid 90s fastball and wideout slider
-extremely low homerun rate at ALL levels so far in his minor league career
-strikeouts are piling up this year, close to 10 per 9.
-22 and just dominating AA (so age appropriate for league).

Dodgers top 5 pitching prospects:
1. Nathan Eovaldi
2. Allen Webster
3. Zach Lee
4. Garrett Gould
5. Chris Withrow

Ps watch out for angel Sanchez, big time sleeper at low a.

Withrow: 117
Eovaldi: 121

Send him down!

by ArbeeEye on Jul 7, 2025 9:07 PM EDT reply actions

I've been waiting for him to get called up

He will probably have a higher OBP than Janish’s SLG. They should have called him up over a month ago when he was still in the middle of his real hot streak. Shit, they should have called him up last September, but if I recall correctly he wasn’t one of their September call ups. Personally I felt he should have made the team out of ST though, he was really knocking the ball around for the Reds then. His BB and IsoP numbers are the same as last season at the same level, but his Ks have gone done. I think he can be an 800 OPS guy in the majors while playing solid defense at SS.

by Boxkutter on Jul 8, 2025 2:01 AM EDT up reply actions

.800 OPS has to be best case

There are six every day SS with an OPS of .800 or better, and they’re guys like Tulo, Asdrubal Cabrera, Reyes (of course). I’ll be happy with an OPS in the low .700s, where guys like Jimmy Rollins, Stephen Drew and Jed Lowrie are living. An .800 OPS would make him a borderline star at his position.

Saw a couple of PAs last night. Missed the GDP but saw the pop-up and single. He’s got a fairly short stroke and gets decent coverage. Swung through Narveson’s FB. I’m interested to see how the leg lift works against major league velo and breaking stuff. If that’s his normal swing — wasn’t dialing it back — I’m interested to see where the power comes from. I’m heartened by the BB, K and IsoP as well, Boxkutter, but keep in mind that he is repeating the league, and that he has a history of making fairly slow adjustments as he’s advanced.

I was in and out and couldn’t catch much defense, so I’ll be paying special attention to that in the next few games.

He probably shouldn’t get a promotion anyways just yet, maybe a couple of starts at the end of the year. Does he have 20 HR potential?

by John Black on Jul 7, 2025 11:26 PM EDT via mobile reply actions

I think so

He has been working on his swing to get more loft. He won’t be a big power hitter but I think he can have acceptable power for a corner outfielder while hitting for a high average/high OBP.

My biggest worry about him is his health, specifically his legs. I worry he will have a short career which starts to decline sooner than most and he may flame out very quickly once he gets past 30.

ya, his avg/obp looks very promising

Hopefully the power develops enough to be an asset in LF.

by John Black on Jul 7, 2025 11:35 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

don't think so

Very interesting player to watch. His swing is very unorthodox, but it works for him . . .for now. He’s able to square balls up very nicely, but his power is almost totally generated through his arms. I have concerns that he won’t be able to do much against major league caliber pitching, but if he gets a bit stronger I can see him getting some play. If nothing else I could see him sticking as a 1B/COF who can put the ball in play and provide a respectable starting option against LHPs, and given his lack of athleticism that might be the safest projection for him. He does deserve a chance to show what he can do, though, and sometimes guys like these end up developing better baseball tools down the line and emerging as very good players.

Has this guy

turned the corner into a legit prospect?

by Legalize It on Jul 7, 2025 11:40 PM EDT up reply actions

he's been hitting ever since he got drafted

I’m just not sure about his defensive ability. Early on I heard/read that he was really fat. However, I recently read that he’s not as fat as being reported. In the end, he probably only profiles as a 1B, but some guy named Pujols has the 1B job in STL for awhile… Or does he? Haha.

by John Black on Jul 7, 2025 11:44 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

The most recent reports say he can be average or better at 1B

So he’s slightly better than no defense. He’s definitely more in shape this season than he has been in the past and plans to continue that improvement in the offseason.

It is true that the two places you can hide someone on defense are presumably covered for the Cardinals for years to come, but you never know. Either way, Adams is definitely a legit prospect.

defense

I really liked him last year and thought that with a few adjustments and physical maturation he could turn into a total package offensively. Obviously you can see how that has gone so far, but the defense is a big issue. He’s still projecting as a major league regular, but understandably people are going to be a bit more cautious about projecting more than that from a corner OF or 1B.

by mrkupe on Jul 8, 2025 1:38 AM EDT up reply actions

He’s been playing LF since being called up to AAA. I think SD is seeing how he does there defensively.

by guru4u on Jul 8, 2025 4:10 PM EDT up reply actions

not underrated

the deal is:

where on EARTH does he play? 3B is a horror for him and he’s a bit too slow for LF in Petco. 1B is Rizzo’s (even with the MLB struggles). Looks to me like a AL DH to me.

by apoxonbothyourhouses on Jul 8, 2025 7:15 AM EDT up reply actions

that is a fairly big leap to make

“Can’t play left field in Petco Park” and “blocked by a young first baseman on his own team” does not equate to “AL DH”.

Blackmon's hurt

by apoxonbothyourhouses on Jul 8, 2025 7:16 AM EDT up reply actions

Dexter Fowler is the likely promotion

In my opinion. Tough break for Charlie Blackmon.

by Matt0330 on Jul 8, 2025 12:53 PM EDT up reply actions

Blackmon

was really struggling, so maybe the timing isn’t that bad. He could probably use a break mentally. Hard to imagine Wheeler getting the call, but after Trout, all bets are off. I expect to see Trevor Bauer in the D-backs rotation on August 16.

by blackoutyears on Jul 8, 2025 1:09 PM EDT up reply actions

True

I almost wonder if Blackmon comes back at all in earnest this year at the mLB level as he isn’t expected to resume any strenuous activities until mid-August & a rehab assignment would likely be part of the deal too. I do love his perspective during his 5 for 50 some stretch pre-injury:

’"I’ll be an extremely average, regular Joe player for a while, while I’m fighting those adjustments, and up to this point I’ve made those adjustments to be a successful player at every step so far. I think I’ll see the same thing at this level,"

Yeah, Crash Davis might have co-wrote most of that but l like this kid’s pluck & have always liked his skillset. I think he’s a potential regular & probably a pretty good one if he can overcome this injury & make the necessary adjustments. In the meantime, this could be (yet another) opportunity for Fowler. .385/.489/.564 in his last 46 PAs so maybe he’ll respond if given the call.

by Matt0330 on Jul 8, 2025 4:21 PM EDT up reply actions

I saw that quote

in a couple of places, and I liked the confidence if nothing else. I could definitely see him finishing out the year back in Colorado Springs between rehab and the potential Fowler resurgence you mention. I hope somebody starts hitting for the Rox ’ sake.

Just nasty. I still think if he tightens up his command and has better economy of his pitches that he could succeed as a starter, if the Reds give him a shot. Anyone know if they are still planning on using him in the rotation eventually?

I just don't see how it's a good idea

To put a guy who’s fallen apart mechanically, had injuries, and has no history of prolonged success as a starter into the rotation and think it won’t go terribly awry. It certainly sounds great in theory, but I don’t see him holding up there, unfortunately.

Another guy who frankly needed some MiLB time if he was ever going to hit his ceiling as an ace starter, but tragically never got the development time because of his stupid big-league contract out of Latin America.

I don't think it was the contract

He was signed to a major league contract, but they could have optioned him to the minors for three years. Instead they started him at AA and had him in the majors only a few months later. It was just a stupid rush job.
