Trade: Gio Gonzalez for WHICH Prospects?
I took over a dead-last team in a 12-team dynasty league. It's a head-to-head 6x6 league (with Holds and OPS) with 40-man rosters and 65 Minors players per team.
I have received several offers for my best pitcher, Gio Gonzalez. Is now a good time to "sell high" on the 25-year-old LHP? Should I keep Gio, or trade him for one of the offers below?
#1. Gio Gonzalez for Cory Luebke, C.J. Cron, 3 draft picks
#2. Gio Gonzalez for Taylor Jungmann, Jackie Bradley, Kaleb Cowart, 10 draft picks
#3. Gio Gonzalez + Peter Tago for Jonathan Singleton, Matt Barnes, Chad James, 10 draft picks
#4. Gio Gonzalez for Yonder Alonso, Jason Esposito, L.J. Hoes, Rex Brothers, Xavier Avery, Kentrail Davis
#5. Gio Gonzalez for Eric Thames, Brian Goodwin, Kyle Seager, 2 draft picks

Offers 2 & 3 are the only ones worth considering.
Humorously, its not even b/c of the “10 picks” thing, but they simply have the best talent. Take the picks out of those 2 offers and they’re still heads and tails beyond offers 1, 4 & 5.
Still, I’d be inclined to keep Gio. I certainly wouldn’t add Tago in to increase my return, either (not worth losing him for the difference between JBJ & Chad James). So if I have to choose an offer to take (I’m aware we don’t here!) then it would be offer 2. Cowart has all star upside. Jungmann could be a 2/3 SP pretty soon. Both those guys are top 75 prospects in the game. Bradley is a nice addition to that as a leadoff type with some pop who could move quickly.
As always, my advice would be to try to ask for more from offer 2’s team. Tell him you’re on the fence and talk up Gio. Hopefully he sweetens the pot enough to make this an easier decision. If not you can always walk away. Jungmann, Barnes, Singleton and Alonso are the only quality prospects here who could help now such that they would make you consider dealing a young power LHP - though again, I’d trade everything BUT Gio.You need more players like that, not less.

Just keep Gio
Why give up the young star pitcher for not great prospects?

I'm also in this league...
and on the lower end of the spectrum, to boot.
While KAP has a few decent guys at the MLB level (Gio and Ike being the two main guys), keeping Gio for another 2-3 years likely won’t put KAP near the playoffs. The rest of his team is VERY young, mostly HS and college prospects & rookie/A ball guys. While some of them are quite good (Bauer, Starling, Z. Lee) by the time they start to produce, Gio likely won’t provide anywhere near the same worth to his team that dealing him for prospects will do now.
Just my opinion, and while I say this as a league rival, we have a bit of a bond by building our teams from the bottom up.

He is being offered terrible packages
Gio isn’t old. Why move a young stud arm for guys who don’t even have his upside?

IMO, I think you're overvaluing Gio...
His LOB% and BABIP values are generous to Gio’s favor this year, while his K-rate has dipped and BB-rate is still above 4 BB/9. He’s (likely) going to regress to his mean eventually, which is an xFIP around 4.0 and ERA around 3.5. To me, Gio is a younger and slightly better version of Jonathan Sanchez, but not a future ace…

I agree that he could get a better top-end prospect for Gio…

his K rate is up this year tho
and i think Gio is just getting started

from the starts I've seen
Gio has excellent stuff and is now learning how apply it successfully. You’re right, he is just getting started.

Higher than 2010 - yes
I was going from 2009 back, where they are all above 9 K/9
by dbreer23 on Jul 2, 2025 3:11 PM EDT up reply actions
those were minor league stats... different
2009 he only pitched 98.2 IP…. 2010 was his first full year, and he eclipsed 200 IP…
in 2009 his K/PA was 24.0%, 2010 it dipped to 20.1%, now its back up to 23.3%, which is nearly the same as 2009, and he is on a tear lately, wouldn’t be surprised if he bumped it up and finished over 24% by the end of th year

I am not saying he is a future ace
I just think that these offers are terrible. I am not sure if I would even trade a mid rotation veteran for these packages.

#2 and #3
I would pass on #1, #4 and #5. Unless the draft picks are bad, I think #2 and/or #3 are very good offers. I was in a similiar situation two years ago when I traded Justin Upton for 7 draft picks that I later turned into (in order) Ackley, (Zach) Wheeler, Scheppers, (Derek) Norris, Trout, Mier and Lyles. With Ackley and Lyles the only ones to make it to the big leagues thus far, the jury is still out, however, I feel like I got the better end of that deal.
Gio is a great pitcher, however, between the prospects and picks, I would take my chances that I could turn them into something better, especially if the most or all of the picks involve 2011 MLB draft talent.

NONE of these packages are good enough...
For you to move Gio. Hold out for a better package. I think you at least deserve two high end prospects. I don’t see that above. Don’t move quality for quantity.

....
Why not get some major league pieces back for him? I know this is a prospect site, but I feel like every time a fantasy trade is posted for comment up here, it’s an owner trading an established star for a gaggle of guys in Low A ball or worse based on hype and I don’t understand that logic. In this particular case, partly for guys that haven’t even tossed a pro inning or faced a single at bat yet. Keep Gio. Or trade him to make your major league roster better. People who are always in a rebuilding phase never actually rebuild, they just keep treading water to trade for the next big thing.

"Why not get some major league pieces back for him?"
Because he doesn’t have the accompanying MLB pieces already in place to compete and likely won’t for at least 2-3 years (and KAP, you know I respect you as an owner so this is not meant as a slam - you have a very good lower minors system in place).
by dbreer23 on Jul 2, 2025 3:14 PM EDT up reply actions
You are putting way too much stock in minor leaguers panning out is what I am saying. So what his lower minors are good? You know how many prospects completely flame out? If you have followed the minors for more than 3 years, then you should absolutely know that. And no team in fantasy baseball should ever be more than a year away from competing. If you can’t rebuild a solid squad in a year, then you are wasting your time. I have taken over some absolutely pitiful teams in leagues where i knew nobody and finished in the money the year after. And I’m not bragging, its just what can be done fairly easily if you work at it. I have no problem trading away big pieces, nobody on any team I have ever run is untouchable, but you should only make trades that make your team better. Just because he wants to trade Gio doesn’t mean he should do it for a mixed bag of guys who best case scenario MIGHT turn out good. Trade him for a young major leaguer if you want young players, and also, Gio is what? 25, 26? I don’t know off the top of my head but it’s not like he’s holding onto Andy Pettite or something. Gio is basically a poor man’s Clayton Kershaw, and that’s got a lot of value.

Roster size has a great bit to do with the competition in this league
MLB rosters are 40 players; MiLB roster is 65 players. We have no restrictions on players who can be drafted and kept, so most of this year’s first rd of the June was chosen two years ago while they were HS juniors-to-be. KAP also started up as an expansion team, so he basically got to choose form the dregs of what the other teams didn’t want. This isn’t your standard ESPN H2H league, so I take issue with your statement of “If you can’t rebuild a solid squad in a year, then you are wasting your time.”
by dbreer23 on Jul 2, 2025 8:25 PM EDT up reply actions
Gotcha
Point taken. In that event, Gonzalez has more value, not less. In a league that big an in his prime top of the rotation starter should have immense value.
by loop on Jul 2, 2025 11:33 PM EDT up reply actions
those are rotten offers
unless you are getting a top 5 prospect plus more, or two top 15 prospects - then why make the deal?
These offers seem to be prospects that are top 50 or top 100 talents. It’s a joke. They are the types of players you should get for an overachieving player that gives a contender value. Not for a 25 year old ace.

A comment on the other league owners....
Most of them are very prospect-centric (or obsessed in some cases), and most of the top teams in the league have top minors systems as well, so I doubt highly that anyone offers KAP a top-15 guy (not that they shouldn’t, just my observation that they won’t). For instance, I had an owner hot for Lind b/c he needed a 1B badly (had Dunn, Pena, and someone else) - I asked for Belt in return - he wouldn’t even do it straight-up (I actually wanted Belt and some other pieces).
by dbreer23 on Jul 3, 2025 5:05 PM EDT up reply actions
if it's a good league there will be at least one owner that will move top prospects for
aces like Gio. It’s easy to spot them, they are the ones winning each year ;)
by pedrophile on Jul 3, 2025 6:40 PM EDT up reply actions 1 recs
Just FYI
Most of these offers have come from recent league champs, or perennial contenders:
Offer 1 - 1st runner up, 2010 & 2007; league champ 2006
Offer 2 - 1st runner up 2009
Offer 3 - perennial playoff contender
Offer 4 - 2010 champ, 2008 1st runner up
Offer 5 - .500 team looking to make a statement
It’s just that most owners in this league are VERY stingy when it comes to top prospects - most won’t even consider dealing one unless a player like Longo, Lincecum, Pujols, etc is coming back, and those trades almost never happen. Most recent one was two years ago when I dealt Morneau and R. Romero for Zimmerman.

Still negotiating with the #2 and #3 teams, so I can't say too much...
…but I do want to say how much I appreciate all the great feedback. This website is a fantastic resource and I appreciate hearing everybody’s thoughts.
Obviously it’s a huge risk to trade a young All-Star like Gio. But it’s also a risk to keep him, when I have a chance to add 13-14 high-upside young pieces right now. Every one of those draft picks would be spent trying to catch the next Bryce Harper or Anthony Rendon.
To quote Brad O’Neill from Deep Leagues, “Now is absolutely the right time to trade Gio. He’s got great numbers right now, which is why selling high is the smart move. He’s a great pitcher, but even assuming he keeps producing the next three-four seasons, it won’t be enough to get you out of the cellar unless you make those long-term moves to load up on young talent.”
