Angels call up Tyler Chatwood
The Angels have called up Tyler Chatwood to take Joel Piñeros spot in the rotation which was uneeded till now. He has a total of two AAA starts under his belt and one was only one inning.. What do you guys think about this? To fill up space: Jered Weaver struck out 15 in 7 1/3 today. Cy Young? Cy Young? Cy Young? Cy Young? Cy Young? Cy Young? Cy Young? Cy Young? Cy Young? Cy Young? Cy Young? Cy Young? Cy Young? Cy Young? Cy Young? Cy Young? Cy Young? Cy Young? Cy Young? Cy Young? Cy Young? Cy Young? Cy Young? Cy Young? Cy Young? Cy Young? Cy Young? Cy Young? Cy Young? Cy Young? Cy Young? Cy Young? He is very impressive and its amazing how he can blow away hitters throwing 91 tops.

4.7k/9 at AA?
Makes me think he’ll get eaten alive in this first callup, unless he can immediately get ahead of hitters.

Chatwood supposed has nasty stuff.
Too bad I’ve never seen it. I’m interested.
Btw: Jered Weaver should meet Justin Verlander.

yeah the projectprospect article is great
BA also seems to like him, but KG is not a big fan of him, saying that due to his mechanics and lack of deception his velocity doesn’t seem as fast as it is on the gun, and he tips his pitches. While I think he’ll do better than the 4.7 K/9 rate, I think this plays a part in it and he won’t dominate.

Id point out
That at his other significant stops in the minors his K rates were 11.4, 8.2 and 7.7, only in the 68 Innings at AA was he at 4.7. he also gets a ton of grounders so there are oher ways to dominate.
I find it weird that the near entirety of the prospecting group focusus so damned hard on those Ks …. in those 68 Inninghs. Especially when he pitched pretty well in those innings.

Maybe it's the fact that his K rate has dropped drastically
And has drooped for nearly every level he has played. This is over 300 innings and can’t be considered sample size any more. Also, his hit rate has likewise climbed. The only positive is his walk rate has gotten better.

Not only did it droop it also dropped!

pointed out the same thing as KG IIRC. Sounds like he throws a ton of strikes but it will be interesting to see how that plays against major leaguers if there’s a lack of deception. I’m rooting for him.

Um, guys
There is no “pattern” here, let alone a drastic one.
The 11.4 was in 38 innings, at Rk ball - we can kinda throw that out, can’t we?
Then he Kd 8.2 at Cedar Rapids, and 7.7 the next season at Rancho Cucamonga, a MUCH tougher league and nearly the same K rate.
His Ks declined at AA but, I see no pattern of decline at all. Again, just a fixation on just his Ks, and in just those 68 Innings.
I believe he has been left off of most top 100 lists almost solely for that reason.

He was left off most lists
because of prejudice against under-sized pitchers and questions about his ability to get advanced hitters out. It’s not about a decline in strikeouts, it’s about a sudden, swift drop after promotion to AA. The signficance and long term meaning are debatable. Its noteworthiness as a topic of discussion is not.
And why are his strikeouts not a point of fixation? They’re part of what makes him an intriguing prospect when they’re there, so their absence is equally compelling.

Sure
im not angry, i hadn’t look at the strikouts that way. Yes, they are fascinating.
i still think that if you look at the totalality of his record…
good K rate, good grounball rate, good sucess in MWL at age 19
good k rate, good grounball rate, very good sucess at Cal at age 20
poor k rate, good grounball rate, continued sucess at AA at age 20
It just seems a bit OCD to fixate on the AA k rate when so much is going well here.

look at porcello in the majors now
Had terrible k-rates in the minors but people just kept giving him the benefit of the doubt, and making excuses for him. Dude still doesn’t k anyone.
I’d say porcello was rushed, and he has settled in the majors as a solid 4 right now.
Chatwood is even more rushed, what has he done to deserve a major league start?
by jarjets89 on Apr 11, 2026 4:25 PM EDT up reply actions
I just showed you
that he a had a good K rate in both 2009 and 2010
again, totally fixated on the Ks and at only one spot - where he was very young - and pitched well
my personally favorite example ot this phenomenon is the case of Casey Kelly. He had a decent K rate at AA, at the same age, has about 5 mph less on his fastball, and was TERRIBLE at AA… yet universally more well liked.

Funny you mention his size as in this video he claims to get comparisons to Roy Oswalt.
Don’t know how accurate the comparison is but here’s the link

fine fine
but the point im trying to make is, how does a 4.47 k//9 at AA in only 68 innings convince the angels that he is ready for the majors? I think they are severely rushing him, but i’m not saying he won’t be good long term
by jarjets89 on Apr 11, 2026 8:02 PM EDT up reply actions
No question they rushed him...
As for why. They probably thought he was the best available pitcher. Idk. Promotions are not the organizations strong suit.

"It just seems a bit OCD to fixate on the AA k"
You’re mischaracterizing again. The AA K rate is only weighed in the context of the prior K rates. It’s your prerogative to ignore a sudden and significant drop in K rate (almost half) after promotion to AA, but it’s not a particularly rational one. I can’t tell if it’s a lack of curiosity or if you’re just hiding behind SSS because you don’t want to confront a flaw in a player you like. There’s a lot of territory between “he’s doomed!” and “this is meaningless”.

Anyone watch the game?
It looks like “decent” was the winner, as he got off to a rocky start and gave up two dingers but got back on track. But I just saw the final line, anyone see him pitch?

Yes
You summed it up. He left two fastballs up early and figured it out pretty quickly afterwards because everything was low. I was impressed. His Chane looked very good and kept them off balance and the curve was as good as advertised with sharp 12-6 break. The FB velocity wasn’t as high as reports have had him previously but there are a myriad of possible reasons for that. He mainly sat at 93 rather than 95 as I’d heard. As an angel fan I’m cautiously optimistic, but hell anything is better than Kazmir. Also I was impressed with how Hank Conger called the game after the 2nd because he and Chatwood really kept the hitters off balance.

I was at school and I didn't see the game but the highlight of Cabrera's homerun didn't look like a mistake...
It was down and away right where Conger placed the glove. I think Cabrera is just seeing the ball well lately/

Conger
Speaking of, how has he looked at the plate? And behind it? As for Chatwood, two homers is rough for a guy know for inducing groud outs. According to the box score he allowed three fly balls and two left the park? Ouch. Tough. Love. lol He did have 8 groundball outs so that’s really promising.
by blackoutyears on Apr 12, 2025 10:16 AM EDT up reply actions
Conger hasn't looked very impressive at the plate but his defense is much improved
on two of the three stolen bases against him izturis dropped the ball. He could very well be 3 for 4 cs if it weren’t for the two drops. He hasn’t committed an error yet either.

It’s sort of refreshing to hear that the bat is a little behind the glove as he’s a good bet to hit well by catcher standards. I just saw a note that Scioscia wants him to stick around despite having Wilson and Mathis on the roster, which is a good sign. In Conger’s case I think that PT play in the majors is more valuable than FT in Triple-A.

I saw a couple innings
hadn’t seen him before. offspeed stuff looked pretty good I thought. I’m interested to see pitch fx data when it goes up—his fastball sure looked flat last night, regardless of velocity..no real movement to speak of. That may have just been last night, though.
