Not going to lie but I don't see the pure #1 stuff that is for an ace
I’ve said for a while, Ervin Santana.

nothing wrong with that though
Before the elbow injury, Ervin was looking like a stud in the making after that 2008 season

That's Teheran's ceiling
Maybe Adam Foster is right on him. Right now I see a mediocre fastball and curve.

Most here have learned to read "I see..."
from you and then stop reading.
Insanity is doing the same thing over and over expecting different results.

The crazy part about this guy is he is 19,
most prospects come up around 23 24 maybe 22 if your good. This guy is 19 two years ago he was pitching high school.

He turned 20 in Jan.
So far he’s ranged from 90-95 but consistently around 93 but his command is off. His change would be great if he was ahead in the count but has been inconsistant so far. His curve is better than I remember more 12-6 but again he’s been behind almost every hitter so they’re not swinging at many pitches

He's been OK
Give the guy a couple of innings to get all the nervousness out of his system, don’t forget he hasn’t seen a crowd this big in any of his games before this one. That has to be scary.

I just don't want to set myself up for Dissapointment
by Bravesin07 on May 7, 2025 7:50 PM EDT reply actions
Why is that?!
A 20 yo kid making his debut in a hostile environment on a chilly night in Philly, he could be terrible imo and that still wouldn’t change my mind on what I know this kid could do!

His stuff isn't anywhere good as people have said
Yankees fans can attest with Phil Hughes whom BA had Hughes sitting 93-95 and touched 97 as a starter when he now is a 88-90 MPH guy though he was 91-93 but still not what they report.

What makes Teheran a number 1 is comand
how fast is cliff lee’s fb? Teheran is sitting at 93, topping at 95, but his command hasn’t been that good. Let’s see how the game develops

You do realize that radar guns differ
Also this is the kids 1st ever ML start and it’s a chilly night so cut the kid a break!

"Phil Hughes whom BA had Hughes sitting 93-95"
Except I’ve seen him 93-95 on multiple occasions as a major leaguer, so I’m not sure what you’re going on about.

He rarely does either
Insanity is doing the same thing over and over expecting different results.

Yeah, it's too bad
I’ve enjoyed some of his anecdotal observations of players but it’s often outweighed by the more questionable, seemingly random, assertions.

Rough night
Likely a lot of jitters involved, but it was clear the Phils were trying to make him throw strikes 1 and 2 tonight, and that put him behind the 8 ball now and then. I would say it was a good appearance for him.

Hughes
You can’t say anything about his current velo…it’s obviously been way down all year because he’s hurt. No scouting report from a few years ago will be accurate when he’s not right. Bringing up this year’s velo shows how much you really know.

Maybe this is just me, but even when he was right i never saw him sitting 93- 95 and I don’t think I ever saw him hit 97.

Bumgarner as well
BA said he sat at 94-96. I’ve never seen a 96 out of Bumgarner.
by Bravesin07 on May 8, 2025 6:47 AM EDT up reply actions
In the playoffs last year
Pretty sure bumgarner hit it a few times. Definitely hit 95 a bunch of times.
by zeisenbe on May 9, 2025 3:14 PM EDT up reply actions
yes
Saw a lot of 94s out of Bumgarner last year.
by blackoutyears on May 9, 2025 4:20 PM EDT up reply actions
he did when he was in the bullpen
Hughes sat 92-95 and touched 97 when he was in the bullpen in 2009. People may be remembering those appearances. Last year in the rotation he generally sat a couple ticks lower, more 90-93, touching 95.

So was
the Knee Jerk Reaction And Hand-wringing Over One Start thread scheduled to begin after the Teheran Debut thread or did the Teheran Debut thread just get canceled?
by blackoutyears on May 8, 2025 1:36 AM EDT reply actions
But knee-jerk reactions are fun
Julio Teheren sucks based on one game!

teheran
I’m sure glad I’m wasn’t often judged on my first attempt at doing something at age 20.

"doing something at age 20."
Yeah, this should be printed on cards and handed out to prospect followers. At Teheran’s age you were busy figuring out who could buy you beer on a given Friday. He just spent his facing one of the five best teams in MLB. Get a grip, gents…

BA just ran a Scout's View
article that was a nice, balanced look at Teheran’s strengths and weaknesses. It’s subscription, so I can’t link or excerpt it, but it’s a good example of why all the potshots at them are silly.
