im the white sox. i highlighted my teams draft as well as the cubs. the cubs is jdsussman. just curious to what everyone thinks about our drafts as well as the whole draft in general. the league is 7 × 7. runs, home runs, rbis, sbs, avg, total bases and walks for hitters and pitchers is wins, saves, holds, strikeouts, total bases, era and whip

I wouldn't have taken Bundy over Cole

and maybe not Hultzen and Bauer, though I could see an argument there.

Guys like Bundy are potentially so far away, with so little performance history…why not go with an arm that has equally elite upside and is three years closer to the majors?

good point

but my team is rebuilding right now. i potentially expect to be competing in about 2 years and i went with bundy because i felt he was the better pitcher and had a chance to be better than cole.

Depends

There has been plenty of talk about Bundy being advanced enough to start in high-A, and he was given an MLB contract. Cole’s ETA will be determined by when/if he can master his command. The fact that the Pirates got him to sign a minor league deal should allow them to patient with him.

indeed

Bundy might take a couple of years, but the reports on him were extraordinary. He was about two or three inches away from being the consensus best prep pitching prospect ever in the draft. He is clearly expected to move quickly.

Cole, who knows. The minor league deal was definitely advisable, but it wouldn’t shock me in the least if, now that he’s finally pro and on track to the major leagues, he “suddenly” starts showing terrific command as opposed to the roller-coaster ride that was his college career. Or, he could struggle with his command every step up the ladder. It’s hard to say with Cole, because he has clearly always been focused on the big picture.

I guess my question for you with Cole would be, if he doesn’t quite “master” his command as you put it, how good can/will he be? I know you’re not a believer in his changeup at present, but that still leaves him with consistent mid-90s heat and an impressive breaking ball. I’ve only seen limited tape on him, but his motion and arm speed made me think that he at least had the potential to develop a killer change, and I’m sure that’s something the Pirates will be looking to bring along, especially if he is slow-tracked.

If he doesn't master his command

I see him as a mid rotation type who just teases everyone with his raw stuff. I don’t dislike him by any means; I just didn’t like that the command issues were continually glossed over this spring.

I finally got a glimpse of the change during the AFL game yesterday, and it did indeed look good. I’ve also noticed that he rarely seems to throw his slider in the strike zone; it’s pretty nasty but using it exclusively as a chase pitch doesn’t seem advisable.

I like JD's draft

Nice grabs of Hedges and Panik where they went. Now all he has to do is root for Hedges to be traded from Petco.

LIndor

I get the feeling a lot of people are going to look back and wonder how they undervalued Lindor. I’d have taken him at 8, maybe even at five, after Rendon, Bauer, Hultzen, Cole.

Bradley and Barnes look like good, safe value in those spots, and Oropesa looks like a decent gamble at 85 in a fantasy league.
