Community Prospect List Discussion (Con't)

Hey, we had a thread up about this 3 weeks ago, and no real followup here.  I was wondering if anyone had any more thoughts or if someone wanted to just get it started.  I don't think we have a fully agreed upon method for doing this list this year, but there were a few suggestions in the other thread.

Do people want this to get started soon?

Getting Started

I think now rather than later is the time, as most sites are starting their rankings.

I’m in favor of the overall Top 100 by the way. I don’t like the system of separating, and then voting for the pitcher/hitter. I think it arbitrarily makes you choose one of 2 options, that you might not have personally agreed should have been there in the first place…

I think the system of separating pitchers and hitters has its merits if one or a few people were doing rankings, but not in a community forum like we have, since there are so many different opinions.

I disagree

I like the separated lists, and would rather keep them and do no combined list than do only a combined list personally. I agree there are many different opinions, which makes the combined list with multiple candidates even more muddled in my opinion.

are people inclined to do a last year's rookie rating as we have done the past few years?

I have run that the past few years. I would be interested in doing it again, but even more interested in doing it if I wouldn’t have to fly solo on it.

quite a rookie class last year

Just picking from last year’s very top prospects who did well this year and lost their rookie eligibility, potential first ballot candidates include Freeman, Hosmer, Moustakas, Ackley, Jennings, Lawrie, Kipnis, Brown, Hellickson, Pineda, Sale and Chapman. At least Trout still (barely) kept his rookie eligibility.

I was thinking starting it after the AFL Rising Stars Game(8pm et on MLB network)

that way, people can watch a guy live and get a better reading on a prospect. I know my opinion changed after watching the game last year on some prospects and it also gives guys a chance to watch prospects they havent followed all that much.

btw, Banuelos really impressed me last year, but Montgomrey was a bit of a dissappointment

Sounds good

I watched those two start against each other last year. I thought they were similar but, I was more impressed with Banuelos too.

Get started now

Only one person has actually completed the list in the last 4 years (cough….cough…….humble……brag) and actually got to 150! I would love to see somebody step up and get the list started as it is a chore to work through.

I believe the 2010 Top 100 was completed as well

I want to say it ran to 110 with an honorable mention section, cut short of 125 due to low vote totals. Unfortunately the search function doesn’t seem to go back more than a year all of a sudden. Anyone know why that is?

If it was supposed to go to 125 it wasn't really completed!!!!

Just kidding around obviously, but if people actually want to do this they need to get their butts going as it is a LONG and tedious project that takes a lot of dedication.

Definitely

The problem we ran into that year was it wasn’t started until late November/early December and then abandoned by cwhitman after 13 polls. Starting it now is pretty important is people want it completed. I’d also advise that there needs to be 3 to 4 people on board to help run the polls(especially in the split polls format). Last year when I had internet issues the people that were supposed to be assisting with the project didn’t pick up the ball and run with it. :)

What do people think of the idea I posted in the other thread...

Keep the split hitter/pitcher list like last season, but tweak it so that it speeds up the overall list AND stops the situation where people don’t like either of the two candidates on the overall poll they can vote for. Here’s how we can do it: If the hitter or pitcher poll goes to a tie-breaker, and that tie-breaker ends up very close (55-45 or closer? something like that), then we list BOTH hitters/pitchers from the tie breaker together as a group to be voted on in the overall poll.

So if Tim Wheeler and Christian Yelich lets say end up in a close tie-breaker, where as it usually is, 40% really like Wheeler and Yelich not-so-much, 40% really like Yelich and Wheeler not-so-much, and 20% don’t like either, we don’t send just the winner to the overall poll, we send them both as a group to be voted on together. This way we don’t have the Yelich or Wheeler haters slowing things down, since neither really have majority support to go against a pitcher. Likely people will vote in Wheeler even if it means putting Yelich a little higher on the list than they’d prefer and vice versa.

If there is no tie-breaker, then obviously only one player will be sent to the overall poll waiting list. And if there is a clear winner of a tie-breaker, then that player will go to the overall poll waiting list as an individual.

I honestly think this will stop the situation where half the people don’t like either choice in a heads up overall poll, and end up picking the least cruddy player or end up making some type of strategic choice.

Edit: I do think the top 10 overall should be just done exclusively 1 at a time to make sure that is as accurate as possible and there probably won’t be many anti-votes that early.

by auclairkeithbc on Nov 5, 2025 10:49 AM EDT reply actions

Honestly

Casual observation last year was that an awful lot of time was spent voting on tiebreakers that only influenced one spot on the ranking.

If Wheeler and Yelich ended up that close in the regular poll (20% and 19%, lets say), the single fastest way to speed up the whole process would be to just stick ‘em both on and move to the next vote. We might end up with a guy ranked slightly differently than if we’d dragged out the whole process, but does that really matter? We spend the rest of the year counseling people about how a few spots in a Top 100 really doesn’t matter.

You could adopt this method once the Top -10 is finished if you feel the one spot makes more of a difference early on.

by siddfynch on Nov 5, 2025 12:38 PM EDT up reply actions

Well

The reason I suggest doing it this way is actually for the combined poll, because we had some issues last year. The main issue was when there were close tie breakers. If we just put lets say Yelich and Wheeler on the hitters poll one after the other, we still end up with the actual “problem” in the main poll. The people that like the 2nd hitter and hate the 1st hitter will just keep voting for so-so pitchers they feel indifferent about before moving the hitters poll along (this happened A LOT), and also where people say they don’t like either choice in a heads up overall poll. So I think the key is having both hitters (or pitchers when those votes are close) be on the overall poll as a group, so at least there should be someone worth voting for.

I don’t think the actual tie-breakers are a big deal, but if we go with my suggestion any time the tie-breaker is close (20% 19% turns into 54% 46% in the tie breaker), both will get on. But half the time, the tie-breaker ends up being really definitive in one player’s favor, so I do think we need to at least have tie-breakers to see if the community really views them as virtually tied.

I'd be open to starting it up.

One thing I’ve had a problem with over the last few years is the methodology involved. Plurality votes suck, and I think that made the rankings suffer. I’d much prefer working in blocks of Borda count-style voting… say, have every thread be blocks of 5, and have people rank the #1-5 prospects without any selection bias that would be inherent in a poll.

Just an idea, but I’d be more than happy to do the work to get it started and maintain it, if that type of system would be agreeable.

So basically, runoff voting?

If so, I’d suggest larger groups than five players, because selecting those five candidates could be as heated as anything due to the legit chance that a guy left out could actually outpoll the entire top 5. Much less likely to happen if you run groups of ten.

Other than that, a fine idea.

by siddfynch on Nov 5, 2025 3:15 PM EDT up reply actions

I mean, a poll was just started, but my idea would have been this:

First thread: Community Top 3 prospects. Here, every vote would include ranking the top 5 prospects. The three prospects with the highest average positions would be ranked our top 3.

Next thread: Community #4-6 prospects. Here, every vote would include ranking the top 5 prospects that weren’t named in the top 3. The three prospects with the highest average positions would be ranked #4-6.

And so on. So sort of a Borda-style system, but a little more focused.

we just need to start.....

vote on everyone at once and since KBR is touting his track record, let him co-lead it with someone else (or others).

I am not leading it

With work, school, and renovations I have zero time or interest to run the prospect list. I will let somebody else deal with the headaches and crybabies this year.
