Pitching decisions (EDIT)

Actually, Familia is 0-0 as far as pitching decisions go & Lee is 1-0 (not 2-0).

PS - I’m a big Juan Nicasio guy & it will be interesting to see how he fares tonight when he strolls into the San Antonio gauntlet. Will also be curious to see if short season alums Roman Mendez & Zack Von Rosenberg continue to make strides in the SAL.

by Matt0330 on Apr 18, 2025 11:35 AM EDT up reply actions

Nicasio/San Antonio

Through 5 IP
Decker/Darnell are combined 4-4 with 2 2B, BB and SB (that’s Jaff’s)
The non-superhuman portion of the Missions lineup is 4-for-16 with 7K and 0XBH

Incidentally, they’ve both got 1.414 OPS marks at the moment.

by realitypolice on Apr 18, 2025 9:44 PM EDT up reply actions

Nicasio

Yeah, he fared pretty well. 7K to 1 BB in 5 innings whilst picking up the W. A lot of intriguing guys on Tulsa & SA as far as everyday players go too, not the least of which would be Decker-Darnell (the latter of whom has walked 9 times compared to 1 K so far in ’11).

Updates

First losses of the year for Enny Romero & Drew Smyly. Respective lines:

ERomero - 3.3 IP with 5 H & 5 ER. 6 K to 3 BB.

DSmyly - 5.2 IP with 3 K. 9 baserunners & 4 R (3 ER)allowed.

Austin Hyatt came in 2-0 & put forth a nice line in an ND. 6 baserunners & 7 K in 6 IP.

Let’s let Webster get through a night without sucking before we get too upset about somebody failing to include him on a watch list, shall we?

by realitypolice on Apr 18, 2025 1:05 PM EDT up reply actions

Yes

Because omitting him from a list of pitchers who are worth watching tonight certainly means we’ve dismissed him as a prospect.

by tenags on Apr 18, 2025 1:26 PM EDT up reply actions

He's not worthy of being "watched' tonight

Yeah I consider that dismissed and no longer on the radar. Why is Daniel Corcino on this list he sucks?

by SeanMillerSavior on Apr 18, 2025 1:27 PM EDT up reply actions

My point

(and I acknowledge that I communicated it badly, mostly b/c I’m in a pissy mood and am a crappy writer…)
is that:
(a)whining at a guy who went through and pulled some names to watch tonight because he missed one, or two (or twenty) is stupid;
(b) assuming that only the names on the list are worth watching is stupid; and
© assuming that an accidental omission means a guy has been completely dismissed is stupid.

And btw, you can discontinue the Jerry Sands daily reminders. He’s an every-day player. We get that if his team is playing, Jerry Sands should be out there. When he does something that night, let us know.

Fair enough; my apologies for the snark

I don’t think it’s so much that there’s an east coast (by which, I assume you mean Boston/Yankees/Mets/Phillies) bias. However, each of us has our own favorite teams and are more likely to chime in on those teams than others…

Turns out, there are lots of soul-less human shells who like to root for those four clubs (and probably enjoy kicking puppies and babies too!), so there is a “bias” toward more conversation about those teams’ players. I live on the fault line between Yankee Universe and Red Sox Nation, so I certainly get how it can be tiring to listen to those two groups!

That said, I’d point out that most of the best and frequent posters to this site (and of course John himself) are in the Midwest.

Re: East Coast bias

Give me a break. I went through the MiLB.com scoreboards and missed a few names, or was too early on a couple TBDs. To say I have East Coast bias because of my milb thread is sort of ridiculous. Shit, my favorite prospects in the game are Jaff Decker and Nick Weglarz. I don’t usually post MiLB threads, anyway, but I’m attempting to make an effort to get back to posting here, which I’ve been neglecting for far too long.

The omissions were my mistake, and I’ve been adding them as I’m made aware of them. Not everything is a conspiracy.

We’re so conditioned to expect zero offense in the MWL that an outburst like his is truly shocking, even with the SSS caveat.

by FI2 on Apr 18, 2025 6:05 PM EDT up reply actions

from diamond futures on 01/18/11:

“While others are enamored with ‘toolsy’ Trayvon Robinson, Garcia is our ‘toolsy’ Dodger outfielder of interest. An 8th round steal in the 2009 draft, Garcia is ‘sculpted’ like a prototypical power-hitting right fielder. Plus power is his top skill, but defensively he has the range of a center fielder and the arm of a third baseman. After a solid 2009 rookie league debut, the Dodgers sent the 18yo to the Pioneer League (PIO), in 2010, where he became the circuit’s third youngest position player, posting the #3 Performance Score while there. His only weakness is his overly aggressive plate approach that led to him fanning in 23% of his PAs. We doubt many will regard Garcia this highly, but this is the type of profile that we look for when uncovering ‘hidden gems’. Expect Garcia to begin 2011 with his first taste of full-season ball and expect everyone else to be discussing him this time next year.”

You’d be correct that the word was that he was preternaturally polished almost for an arm not far removed from high school in terms of commanding his pitches. I didn’t see him last year but most indications seemed to be that there wasn’t a ton of room to grow in terms of stuff. He doesn’t seem as exciting as he did a year ago.

by rdf8585 on Apr 18, 2025 11:13 PM EDT up reply actions

why?

he’s doing just fine. he was way young for the fsl last year anyway

by daveh33 on Apr 18, 2025 11:15 PM EDT up reply actions

true

I guess I expected more out of him given his $1.625 mil bonus. Just lost a little luster. 16 Ks in his first 40 or so PA doesn’t bode especially well, but it’s admittedly not a big sample size yet.

Jeff Francoeur was once a highly touted prospect as well

He was #14 overall in 2005
  1. the year before that. Your point stands, but Frenchy was a very well regarded prospect in his own right.

Yeah, not that Francoeur wasn't a highly regarded prospect, but a lot of that perceived value came from his defense.

His offense was clearly flawed when compared to Montero’s. No one ever suggested Francoeur’s bat was the best in the minors.

I was at the game last night. Very nice game by Zach, throwing first pitch strikes almost every at bat and taking a perfect game into the 5th.

Answer

I dunno … just jumping from A+ to AAA is a big deal (at least to me) and I figured his one start at Round Rock would be just that.

If he pitches well on Tuesday, does he stay at Round Rock for a third start?

Free Scott Sizemore.

by criminal type on Apr 19, 2025 12:38 PM EDT up reply actions

They have a temporary need

and they’re rewarding Ramirez by giving him the opportunity to fill it. Ramirez has worked his butt off and made a lot of improvements over the last year. He deserves the chance at filling this slot for a couple turns. Hurley and Scheppers were on the DL, Ramirez will go back down after this most likely.

Slow start to the year with a .213 average and a .347 slugging. Maybe he is just starting slow like last year.

Some others

 - Alexander Colome had 7 Ks (0 BB) in 5 IP & allowed 1 ER in a no decision. To me, he is somewhat overlooked by some in terms of potential apex.

 - Blake Beavan had a rough time of it in his 2011 home debut with 10 hits ceded & 6 ER in 5.2 IP in an ND.
