Guess the Prospect!

Guess the Prospect!

The first person to correctly identify this prospect gets to pick the next team in the Top 20 queue after the Orioles.

An outfielder, I was signed as a free agent from Latin America and made my pro debut at the age of 16 in the Gulf Coast League. I did not perform well, but I was just 16!

Star-divide

The following season I moved up to full-season baseball at age 17 and blossomed, hitting .294 with 14 homers. I was hampered by injuries the following year at age 18 and struggled in the Florida State League, but I returned to that league at age 19 and was more effective, hitting .293 and stealing 15 bases while showing good plate discipline.

The following year at age 20 I hit 19 homers and stole 10 bases in Double-A, although my plate discipline took a step backward. I began the next season in Triple-A at age 21 and hit very well, hitting .319 with a .478 SLG. I was involved in a trade right before the deadline that summer, and made my major league debut with my new team late in the year.

I split my age 22 season between Triple-A and the majors, and never returned to the minors. My major league career lasted seven seasons. I never quite lived up to expectations, in part due to plate discipline issues, but I showed power and hit 10 or more home runs at least three times.

Who am I?

Pedro Munoz?

While I’m surprised he didn’t go back to the minors at some point, it sounds like him (I remember seeing him in the IL as a young kid along with the immortal Rob Ducey). Different days for the Jays back then & up until 1993.

Speaking of the Jays...

pick them for the next prospect list! :)

Not sure if it is right

It looks like Munoz hit 10 plus HRs four times but other than that it seems really close. Definitely helped that I’ve followed Toronto for some time if so (would really like to see them back in the IL & NYP for what that’s worth too as I’m back in that part of the country again).

I hardly remember Munoz as a prospect as I was just getting into baseball/sports & I was very young when he left the system but I seem to remember him being fairly ballyhooed (is this right?). I definitely had a bunch of his early 1990s baseball cards when he was a Twin so that’s something concrete at least.

Well it says...

“hit 10 home runs or more AT LEAST three times” so that would still fit.

has to be Munoz

Right on all the specific numbers/ages/levels. And the trade fits. I think Matt0330 gets to choose the team to add to the queue.

Oh yeah (TORONTO)

Part of me wants to go contrarian & pull a Tony Clifton & nominate the unloveable Florida Marlins who might be one of the most underepresented teams here in terms of fan support. I’m also a big Marcell Ozuna-Christian Yelich supporter so there’s that.

However I’ll give the people - and me - what they want (I guess that makes me Bono or something), so the Toronto Blue jays it is. Don’t thank me Jays fans, thank Pedro Munoz. (Or at least Topps Stadium Club & Upper Deck cards)

I’ll thank all of you (Matt, Pedro, Topps and Upper Deck). :)

Clear eyes, full hearts, can't lose.

dammit

i thought it would be harder. Yeah, Pedro Munoz

I think you should chalk this up to Matt0330’s amazing memory than any lack of difficulty.

I was starting in the right spot & was on lunch, ha

Midseason trade of an OF made me flash back to Mark Whiten & Glenallen Hill because I’m a Toronto fan since I was younger. Obviously it wasn’t those guys because they were domestic but the Jays used to always be ‘buyers’ when trading guys like that duo & Junior Felix, Steve Karsay, Jeff Kent, Greg Myers, etc. I started to think that former A’s prospect Felix Jose might check out (except for the FSL thing, right?) but got to Munoz before abandoning the Jays.

I also kind of liked the Twins in the early 1990s when younger (fan of their core, 1991 WS obviously & LeMoyne graduate J.Deshaies was there for a spell) so Munoz wasn’t as out of sight, out of mind as he might have been with others as he played more than a couple years there.
