The Minor League Ball Fantasy League

The Minor League Ball Fantasy League

The thread about Fantasy Baseball a couple of days ago generated an excellent response. It is obvious that most of you have a strong fantasy baseball interest, and this has convinced me to move forward with a special project.
I often get questions about what fantasy leagues I'm personally involved in. The answer is usually "none," mostly due to time constraints, but that is going to change this year.
Want to kick my butt in a fantasy league? Here's your chance.
CBSSports.com is introducing the CBSSports.com Fantasy Baseball Commissioner League. Partnering with our SB Nation network, CBSSports.com is offering Minor League Ball a free league (normally a $179.99 value). I'm running a team, and I need 11 other owners to join up with me. Additionally, CBSSports.com is offering a 50% discount on any leagues you might want to start yourself, using this link.
Interested in playing me? Keep reading.

Star-divide

First, some general points about the CBSSports.com League itself.

**It won 8 of nine Fantasy Sports Trade Association Awards for "Best Fantasy Baseball Commissioner League Management Product."
**It features live scoring and stats so it's easy to follow how your team is doing.
**You can customize your entire league however you want...rules, scores, teams, and more
**It has keeper league capability to carry forward to future seasons
**It has a live chat and league messenger option for easy communication/trash talk with other owners
**Expert analysis with up-to-date information on all players and teams
     **14-day Free Trial is included.

Using the CBSSports.com League tools, here are the options I have specifically for the Minor League Ball League:

**This will be a 5x5 League using Rotisserie scoring.
**Hitting categories are Batting Average, On-Base Percentage, Slugging Percentage, Stolen Bases-Caught Stealing, and RBI.
**Pitching categories are ERA, Strikeouts, Saves, Wins, and WHIP.
**This is a mixed league with both AL and NL players. Rosters are 24 men, including 11 pitchers (five starters, six relievers) and 13 position players.

I'm looking for 11 people to join me in the Minor League Ball Fantasy Baseball League. It is free to you. The league-winner will receive a free copy of the 2011 Baseball Prospect Book, plus bragging rights and the accolades of having defeated me.

If you are interested in being one of the 11 people in the league, please write a 50-word (or less) comment in this thread under the title "Official Entry", explaining why you should be in the league. One entry per person please. I will select the winners by Tuesday evening, and we will go from there. As Official Entries come in, feel free to point out people who YOU think would be good owners for the league. We will post at least weekly updates on how the league is going as the season progresses.

If you are interested in starting your own CBSSports.com league at a 50% discount, use this link. You have to use that link to get the SBNation/MinorLeagueBall discount.

Let's have some fun!

CBSSports.com is an SB Nation partner and paying sponsor of the SB Nation baseball communities. This post is one of a series of sponsor endorsed posts related to the CBSSports.com Fantasy Baseball Commissioner League.

League

I would love to compete in this league! I have been in many leagues with industry experts including Rick Wilton, Scott Piankowski and others. Winning those leagues are great, but I am much more interested in a league with minor league experts. First to comment too!

Sorry, I was skimming from my phone.

I’ve been doing fantasy for the past few years, I am in one unique league, and one expert saber league. I’ve been posting here for a long time, and in fact, I started a league for posters here about 3 seasons ago (before the one that runs currently). It would be fun to do it right, with the right people. With that said, I’m looking to do this with people from this site (who post), not people who lurk around for fantasy advice. I know that could come off snobbish, but when I did my John Sickles Keeper league, the people who dropped out were the lurkers.

I’ve been playing fantasy baseball for approximately five years, since I was twelve. I’ve always done very well and am very active during the year. I have hunches about certain players, and I’m found as a risk taker. I’m also a frequent poster on minorleagueball and I’ll be glad to help add something to the community with this league.

I started to play fantasy baseball in 2000; I remember the year because that was Furcal’s rookie season. I’ve been in a few money/keeper leagues, but nothing in a few years. Since then, I’ve been playing in a SIM league and a few friendly leagues. I’d quite enjoy the challenge.

I’ve played fantasy baseball since the orginal book came out and Strat-O-Matic since I was 5. I started the first Kansas City fantasy league which continues. I have played in expert leagues representing Baseball Guru and finished 2nd. I like that you tweaked the 5×5 categories which adds an extra bonus incentive for me as I like the little things that help a league stand out. As much as I play I would not consider myself a cutthroat player and just enjoy the hobby- and how different minds approach things. I am a Kansas man (not that allows for bias) and purchased Bill James infant manuscripts during my time in Lawrence as an undergrad. Either way have fun with this you deserve the diversion.

I’ve been playing Fantasy baseball since I discovered there was such a thing in 2004. There is absolutely no coverage of baseball where I live (Portugal) so this has kept me motivated to dig deeper into rosters and eventually minor league baseball. I really enjoyed to have beaten people by picking the players that I envisioned would have great years and everyone else dissed. You gotta love market inefficiencies. Plus you’ll have the pleasure of having someone curse in Portuguese on the league board.

and I did start the 1rst roto league in KC. The orginal book came out in March 1984, I happened to be in NYC and caught it at a book store read it coming home. We started a league that month and my fellow league mates could not find the book in KC as it was not here yet. Not that it matters unless people are just snarking for the sake of snarking but it’s true so take the negativity somewhere else and chill

I dont want to be

in the league, and don’t really do Roto leagues, but 12 owners in a mixed league seems “kinda not so good”. Every team will pretty much be all star teams and there won’t be a whole lot of skill involved. You should probably do AL or NL only, so everyone has to at least uncover some hidden gems and not just draft the top guy that the computer suggests. . . .

food for thought anyway

by SoCalSoxFan on Mar 7, 2026 7:15 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Well, I suppose the argument would be that it's a keeper league

Which would of course add some skill in there.

by RedSoxFaithful on Mar 7, 2026 7:18 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

that would obviously have to be

decided upon to begin with, don’t know if John wants to commit to going beyond a year. . . not many would go into a roto draft w/ the intent of winning in three years though. . .

by SoCalSoxFan on Mar 7, 2026 7:23 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Well, I mean

This being a site focused on baseball’s minor leagues, it would make sense for it to be a keeper league, since that’s the only way that prospects (and thus John’s area of expertise) would even be somewhat relevant.

by RedSoxFaithful on Mar 7, 2026 7:33 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Even better, a 24-owner mixed league

That would preserve the competition and skill level plus enable a lot more readers of John’s blog to participate.

by Rotofan on Mar 7, 2026 7:26 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

ok...

1) Who are you quoting with “kinda not so good”? If it is yourself, you do not need to quote it.
2) I “kinda” agree with your NL/AL only argument, but but one “problem” with “those” is the trades of real players. Might “as” well run a full league, have better teams, and frankly spend a lot less hours doing it since “you” don’t have to dig up the backup 2B for the Nats.
3) I “frickin” love quotation marks? Do “you”?

As a longtime reader and follower of your work, a Baseball Manager Fantasy participant since the Prodigy days and maybe one of the few baseball fanatics who also understands all of your ST:TNG/LOTR references, I would love to join your league.

Short and sweet: I own a time machine. Don’t believe me, put me in the league and find out more than you ever imagined about my fantasy skills. Thanks.

Let me start by saying I have absolutely no fantasy baseball experience and if you can’t beat me you really should consider insurance sales or a job in the custodial arts. I do, however, possess a keen eye for the game and an advanced knowledge of the psychology and physiology of the game. I approach the game from an intuitive rather than statistical standpoint which you may think puts me at a disadvantage. I can assure you, your Picardian knowledge will falter under my Kirkian gun slinging and quickly render you Capt. “Dunsel”.

Been playing and running a league since1989. Kept all stats by hand (pre computer) the first several years. In 21 years I have won 18 championships. Played in 100+ other leagues never finished below 4th. Fantasy Baseball play started with Pursue the Pennant in 1983.

Would love to be involved

"Official Entry"

I should be invited because I’m a quality, active and knowledgeable Fantasy manager. Win or lose, (especially the former) I’ll have fun and bring a good attitude to the league!

More importantly, I’ll strive to have an awesome team name based on wit and some player(s) on my roster.

It's true...

Bob’s names always make me lol ever so slightly. IT’s worth it.

Suggestion - John Make this a charity league with each team giving something to the winners charity of choice (amount what ever each can afford so as to not restrict who joins).
Why me — 18 year fantasy vet, very active, add an international flavor as I live in China.

In my sixteen years of playing fantasy baseball, the one attribute I have learned that I will bring to the table is this - it’s a game. I want to have fun and bring fun, be challenged and challenge others, but above all play nice.

I don’t have as much experience as some of the posters here, but I’m just a baseball fan in general, and love strategy games (which is how I approach fantasy sports).

I am most well-known for drafting players one year too early before they peak, and funny team names.

Great idea John

Me:

- been playing rotisserie since 1990
- more than held my own against some of the best of toronto
- would love to play against John and the knowledgeable minorleagueball’ers
- lots of administrative experience to offer, if needed, to help any league run smoothly
- get-along

Oh, did I mention I have purchased every yearly prospect book by john since he started doing this?

50 words or less, go:

Started playing fantasy baseball when I had to pull the stats manually from USAToday (no internet). That being said, I don’t take it to seriously. I love baseball and found fantasy baseball to be an avenue follow various teams and young players that I wouldn’t normally focus on.

Whew… 49 words…

by Wahoo25Ben on Mar 8, 2026 1:14 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Apparently, I need a proofreader as good as Jeri. As I edited my post down to reach 50 words, I obviously deleted a few that I shouldn’t.

Hopefully, that doesn’t detract from my point:

I’m an experienced fantasy player but don’t take it OVERLY serious. Love the game of baseball first and foremost. I found that fantasy baseball is just a tool that helps me track more teams and more players (including minor leaguers). It puts players and statistics into context for me.

Didn’t come across your work until a few years ago. I’m a regular reader if not a frequent poster. Really enjoy it and appreciate all the hard work.

Questions

Would this be a daily or weekly transactional league? I assume we are talking a redraft league. Keeper concept would be really cool on a board like this one. Is this a straight draft or auction format? Do the owners get a FAD budget, or are pickups made instantaneously?

trans

daily transactions. straight draft, done automatically once everyone gets their ballot rankings in. Keeper league. No salaries for players. Idea is to keep it simple.

I have been playing FBB since 1998, in both a 15 team mixed league and a 12 team NL-only league. In those 12 years, I have won 5 championships in the mixed league, and 3 in the NL league. I also co-commish the NL league, which is on CBS.

I am in a 16 team keeper league w/10 MINOR LEAGUE SPOTS per roster. We are so fanatical about prospects that I drafted Tyler Ladendorf with my 14th round pick two years ago! If you want someone who takes prospect mining seriously and knows how to run a team…I am your man!

Would Love the Opportunity

Hello John,
For years I have followed your words and that shared wisdom has led me to many Dynasty League championships, where minor league talent is key to longevity. With that said, I would love the “Wax on, Wax off,” “Student vs Teacher” opportunity to match baseball wits with you, aka Mr Miyagi…..I would proudly display my “free” 2011 Prospect Book next to the one you personally autographed for me.
Peace,
Jimmy

Format

A Roto format with fewer counting stats (especially on offense) worries me, as teams can basically get some gaudy numbers early in the triple slash categories then sit on the offense (punting the others, or stacking on speed/RBI guys) and focus on pitching. Is there a way to set a minimum Games Played/IP for the league to offset that? Perhaps having RBIs and SB-CS is enough, just kinda worries me…and while I would hope that those of us you pick wouldn’t take on that “strategy,” we’ve all played enough fantasy sports to know that some people just want to win win win!

there is a minimum AB requirement I think. We still have time to tweak the rules before opening day.

Me First and the Gimme Gimmes!

I come up with awesome fantasy team names. Last year my three teams were “92 With Movement” (for any Mark Titus fans, you’ll get the reference), “The Gregarious Raconteurs” (Bill Simmons Fans should get that one, and “Three Molinas, One Cup”. I have been playing about 10 years, and help run a DMB League. I set my line-ups daily and scour the waiver wire weekly. I prefer picking players who I enjoy rooting for, which is why I have never owned Barry Bonds in a single league. Tim Lincecum would be my #1 pick if I was first. And if you pick me, I will order your book for this year since I just got a new job and will be able to afford it. I have also been a reader here since the first week of the site when there were pictures of Beavis & Butt-head and your cat. Was that more than 50 words?

It would be an honor.

Please refer to my handle; when I signed up for Scout.com circa ~2000, I truly hoped that would come true in 2011…

WINNING the 2011 Baseball Prospect book would be great consolation! And perhaps (slightly) more realistic.

Thanks for the consideration. Let’s play some ball!

I have been playing roto ball since the late ’80s.

I also am in several CBS dynasty leagues already so I am very familiar with their site, layout, etc.

I’m a very active owner and ready to DOMINATE! :-)

why i would not only be honored to compete w/John Sickels, but feel i deserve it

beyond being of a sought-after demographic as an educated 24 y/o male, i would bring to this league: entertaining banter, a VERY active/knowledgeable/experienced FB player & trade partner. i would truly bring something unique to this league.

p.s. i will donate all my winnings to a charity of Mr. Sickels’s choice. Thank you for your consideration, and good luck to everyone!
