Okay … can someone answer me what their concerns with Brett are? I’m not saying Brett will succeed … I’m simply discussing value. The main issue seems to be that he doesn’t have the experience to suggest the positive scouting reports on discipline/strike zone awareness are definitely true.

There’s very little question on his swing (a nice, smooth, sweet stroke that generates power without him having to swing for power). There’s very little question on his glove. Power potential, I guess, is debatable, but most reports buy that he’ll have 20+ HR power.

We’re inching towards the 80’s, though. A 5-tool CF whose main wart is balanced by scouting reports suggesting improvement? We’re putting some guys with significantly lower floors, or significantly higher risks on. I’m just curious what people are seeing with Brett that’s leading to this. I mean … with Donovan Tate, if he develops into what Brett is now in a few years, that will be rather positive.

I mean, looking at the rest of this polling group -

Lee is far riskier and has a far weaker bat than Brett.

Iglesias might have defensive positional value over Brett, but without looking at the calculations, I wonder how much Iglesias has to perform offensively to be of equal value. Again, haven’t looked at the calculations, but I don’t recall a stud CF needing to be a gigantically superior bat over a stud SS to have the same value, and Brett’s bat is pretty clearly ahead as of now.

I am big fans of Reddick and Kalish, but I’m still not sure how either made it ahead. That said, I guess I can understand a vote for Reddick. Somewhat similar player, although I think Brett’s bat is better and his glove is better, and I’m not sure the readiness difference balances it out for me.

As for Weeks, … well, I really want to see that bat versus tougher pitching. I’m not sure, in my mind, he’s top 100, but I know some folks really love him. Seems like a solid 2nd base prospect, but I don’t see anything exceptional to put him in the top 80.

Positional adjustments

CF: 2.5
SS: 7.5

I voted for Iglesias over Jackson (who I had been voting for). The more that I hear about Iglesias, the more impressive he sounds. I’m not sold on his bat, but he really doesn’t need to be a world beater with the kind of defense he’s supposed to play.

well, since you bring up Weeks

Who I wouldn’t vote for yet. Weeks outhit Jackson in college, by a lot. Weeks walked more than he struck out in college, while Jackson walked less and struck out in mid 20%. Jemile Weeks hit for more power than Brett Jackson in college. Weeks put up .375+wOBA through his 350 PAs in A and A+, while walking about 12% and striking out about 16%. Jackson put up ~.385wOBA at A- and A, while walking about 12% and striking out over 20% (including 25% at A). Weeks went 12th in his draft. Jackson went 31st in his.

In what way is Jackson a better prospect than Weeks?

Its really the swing and miss that scares me with Jackson. I’m not sure what kind of AVG he can hit for and how much he can bring his secondary skills to bear in the bigs with that issue.

If

If the reports on Brett suggested he was hacking at pitches OOZ, then I would be concerned. But outside of the normal OOZ swings that every player has, I don’t recall any report suggesting that he’s a wild hacker. Is he going to be a guy that ever walks more than he strikes out? Probably not. But by most accounts, there is good strike zone awareness and his ability to handle the bat for situational purposes is also reportedly high.

by toonsterwu on Mar 14, 2026 1:58 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

There is a difference between being a hacker and having holes in your swing.

Chris Carter isn’t a hacker and he walks a lot. He still has a lot of swing and miss in his game. Adam Dunn is not a “hacker” but he is always near the lead league in Ks.

Jackson has some big issues with contact/strikeouts. That doesnt mean he’s a hacker. Still a very good prospect, and I have him on my list before this point (though the CPL doesn’t look like my list so
I’m not ready to vote Jackson yet).

wow

“Jemile Weeks hit for more power than Brett Jackson in college.”

The fact that you bring this up gives me the impression that you really don’t get the difference between the college game and the pro game.

by mrkupe on Mar 13, 2026 10:53 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

explain then

the park factors are similar at Cal and Miami.

by AgitationStation on Mar 13, 2026 11:34 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Sure, but that's only part of the equation

The pitchers are different in the pros, not just in terms of stuff but the way that they pitch.

Maybe even more important, the difference between swinging a metal bat and a wooden bat is just huge. Guys who make lots of contact without a lot of natural raw strength tend to be among those who benefit the most from metal bats. Weeks is a really good example of such a player.

I don’t think you would have found too many scouts before the draft who would have graded Weeks’ power better than Jackson’s, regardless of the college numbers.

by mrkupe on Mar 13, 2026 11:57 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah, that doesn't make sense...

I know there’s no evidence for that theory, and it makes little to no sense from a laws of physics p.o.v. Also, doesn’t jibe with what happened on the field. Junior season, Weeks hit .446/.763 on contact. Jackson hit .432/.720. Before the draft there were plenty of questions about Jackson’s power. Scouts thought he possessed raw power, but his swing didn’t generate loft because of a flat swing plane and he slapped at the ball too much. Don’t forget, he hit leadoff at Cal, not cleanup.

Ftr, wasn’t saying that Weeks is more powerful than Jackson. I should have been more clear. I was making a roundabout comment on Jackson’s disappointing college career (and Weeks’ impressive one), and the fact that a few months in low A and A ball don’t wash that away.

by AgitationStation on Mar 14, 2026 12:33 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

stuff

Jackson obviously showed a pretty good power stroke in the Midwest League, and it couldn’t be a total fluke, since as you noted, he has good raw power. He hit leadoff at Cal because, as you also noted, he really wasn’t much of a power hitter there . . .but his speed did play, so it just made sense. The questions about Jackson’s power were “can he use it?” not “does it exist?” (which was the question being asked of Weeks).

Weeks just makes a lot more contact than Jackson, I don’t think that’s going to change. He also makes pretty decent use of what strength he does have. In the college game, that definitely plays up thanks to the metal bat.

by mrkupe on Mar 14, 2026 12:44 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

your telling me

beyond the comments that mrkupe addressed below on the power comment, that you wouldn’t take a power hitting CF with 20-25 HR power and a plus glove over a leadoff hitting 2nd baseman? It’s probably not as wide a gap as I initially made it out to be, but for me, I’d lean that way without a 2nd thought.

Again, I’m not guaranteeing success for Brett. I’m simply asking, off of what we know right now, what are the issues that drops him down in your mind. Almost every single negative is discipline related, and the scouting reports give enough hope as of now that it’s hard for me to think that he’d drop solely due to that when there are positive scouting reports. If he struggles in a year, maybe. And maybe some people are voting on projections of what they believe, but for a whole bunch of guys earlier on this poll, people voted based solely on positive scouting reports.

As for college stats, I tend to take it with a grain of salt. Keep in mind that

a) There was a discussion awhile back about Brett growing into his power and how he had to adjust to it.

b) That, even in wood leagues, I don’t recall any reports out of Northwoods or Cape Cod suggesting that he had poor discipline.

c) BA has loosely suggested before that Brett was overly aggressive his junior year in a draft campaign.

d) That the discipline issues erupted in his junior year, and only that year.

re
beyond the comments that mrkupe addressed below on the power comment, that you wouldn’t take a power hitting CF with 20-25 HR power and a plus glove over a leadoff hitting 2nd baseman?

If the second baseman is a force of his own, less defective, and more likely to be able to use his gifts at the MLB level, then yes, I probably would. I’m also not willing to put too much stock into a small sample size over 3 moths at A- and A. If we’re talking scouting reports, why did Jackson, a player that all the scouts saw from multiple years (unlike a Trout for example), last until pick 31?

But, like you note, we’re all voting different ways.

by AgitationStation on Mar 14, 2026 5:11 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

heh

Jackson, on raw talent, probably rated in the top 10 guys in last year’s draft, definitely within the top 15. The difference between a guy like Jackson and a guy like Trout, though, should be obvious. Compare the known and the unknown about the two players. While there might be a lot unknown about Trout (he might struggle the same as Jackson has in turning his tools into skills, or he might not), the known about Jackson is that for three years of college ball, he didn’t live up to his potential. That’s a pretty big thing to overcome in some minds. There’s also something to be said for being able to mold a player from a younger age.

Jackson’s scouting reports are generally pretty awesome, it’s the polish that’s been the issue.

by mrkupe on Mar 14, 2026 8:22 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

At the time?

I don’t think he was a top 15 talent at the time of the draft. He was coming off of a very disappointing junior season. BA ranked him as the 34th best prospect on May 27th and I don’t think he did anything to raise his stock prior to the draft (like Matzek who was sitting in the upper 90s in his HS playoffs).

And I absolutely hate arguments that are based off of draft position.

General comment

We haven’t added back any previous round guys in a while. Guys like Alex White and Wilson Ramos have been sitting out for over 5 rounds. I have less trouble with White and Liddl seeing as they received 0%, but a guy who had marginal support 7 rounds ago should be back on the poll by now, I think.

Insanity is doing the same thing over and over expecting different results.

by biggentleben on Mar 13, 2026 1:55 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Actually

this is the first poll in quite awhile that hasn’t had at least one returning name on the poll. Last poll had Main, the one before that had Wheeler, Miller, Hagadone, and Darnell with only Hagadone dropping off, #75 had Conger, Melville, and Sano with Conger sticking, #73 had Jay Jackson, Jason Knapp, and Mike Moustakas.

We’re in a situation now where the votes are very spread out and we’re only turning over 3-4 spots now as opposed to 5-6 spots like we were 10 or so polls ago. I also try and keep some sort of balance between hitting and pitching, though the voting is leaning towards hitting overall at this point. While it’s possible that Ramos could come on and win the balloting, he only had 1 vote last time he was and we have a couple of guys in Brett Jackson and Tony Sanchez drawing strong numbers already. I took this round as a chance to cycle in some new names to see if we’re close on them since right now very few of the tester pool options received any votes the last time they were on.

I intend on getting Ramos on next poll, but I’ll probably be looking at guys like Storen and/or Duffy as additional candidates depending on how many spots open up this time. We’re just in one of those bottleneck areas where too many guys are polling similarly and making fewer chances to cycle in names.

That should read #74 had Jackson, Knapp and Moustakas.
  1. had Delgado, Tate, and another returnee or two on it.

personally, the total lack of Liddi support surprises me a bit

Yeah, his numbers were helped out some by his environment . . .but the numbers were still great, and his upside is undeniably massive. He’s a bit raw from his European background, but to me he looks like he might just have plus-plus power potential.

Project Prospect had this good video of Liddi, which explains a lot. Tons of power, will probably need to refine his technique a bit to succeed at higher levels. Present production + projection to get much better seems like an intriguing package to me, especially after Cal League guys loved him so much . . .maybe people just don’t know him?

Adrian Cardenas +1

The guy most likely going to be a star, he has consistently hit at every level.
He has taken time to hit at every level, but upon given a second chance has shown that he can, including his second stint in AAA last year.
Plus, those 41 doubles show an ability for some power…
