Minor League Fantasy Draft Advice?
Our league is conducting our annual minor league draft next Monday. A lot of the top prospects are already owned from years past, but there are still some quality players available. I am strongly considering a trade that would move me up to the 3rd overall pick (trading picks 13 & 15 - it's a 14 team league) for a chance to take Ryan Westmoreland, who I am quite fond of. Our league is 7x7 scoring (HR, RBI, Runs, SB-CS, OBP, OPS, UZR, QS, ERA, WHIP, Ks, HRA, WPA, RE24). The other top tier players available are: Martin Perez, Starlin Castro, Aroldis Chapman, Casey Kelly, Michael Taylor, Kyle Drabek and Lonnie Chisenhall. Should I consider any of those guys over Westmoreland? Does anyone want to try to convince me that any of these other guys are better or that I should stick with picks 13 & 15?

Michael Taylor
Michael Taylor is a guy I’d be aiming for if he’s still available at #3 (if you make the trade).
Westmoreland might still be available at 13.
I’d rather have any of the other guys you mentioned ahead of Westmoreland.

I agree
Taylor is much closer to the bigs, meaning fewer bad things can happen. Castro and Drabek would be fine picks as well.

No Chance . . .
that Westmoreland is available at 13. Our league is full of Red Sox fans. He’s sure to be a top 5 pick given the players available. As for Taylor, it seems like his upside isn’t particularly high. Our league’s minor league system heavily favors superstars over merely good players. I just don’t get a superstar vibe from Michael Taylor. While his potential floor seems like a .350 OBP, 20/20 guy, his ceiling doesn’t really seem that much higher than that. I’m not all that excited about a guy whose upside seems to be numbers like Nate McLouth out of a corner OF spot. Westmoreland seems like a potential superstar whose offensive upside seems along the lines of David Wright.

Michael Taylor
Has Jayson Werth type upside, and he would’ve been the perfect replacement in RF in 2012 for Philly.
I bet Philly will ultimately regret not having traded Dom Brown in the Halladay deal.
As for your question, Westmoreland is the pick, at the very least he’s the player on your list that will hold the most trade value in the next couple of years (followed by Perez, Chapman)

I don't really see that kind of upside for Taylor
He doesn’t have a great swing for power… his power comes from being a gigantinormous human being.
I still like him plenty, though.

Really?
I would certainly have Perez, Chapman, Taylor, and Drabek ahead of Westmoreland, and depending on the rest of my roster, maybe Kelly and Castro, too. Maybe it’s just me…
