Ugh, Terrible terrible terrible.
Stanton way too low, switch places with Santana. Santana and Smoak move up a few. Bumgarner up about 15-20 spots. Parker up 10. Escobar out. Rondon, LaPorta, F-Mart Way too high. Carrasco/Alonso also way too high. Gamel as well.

Smoak
He is a 1B, I think PP is trying to keep positional differences in mind judging off comments I’ve heard which is why Wallace has taken a hit in value from their perspective. 1B/LF do get overrated a bit from time to time based on their bats because, generally speaking, sooooooo many prospect fans are really fantasy baseball fans.
Stanton/Santana
The difference between the 2nd best prospect in all of minor league baseball and the 8th best prospect is insignificant. You can’t really knock them on that.
Bumgarner
Their concerns with Bumgarner have been well noted and after his meltdown the other day slightly reinforce some of their concerns. When all he has is a plus FB and he has lost velocity, how can you not be concerned? I’m surprised they even have him in the top 25 given the stance they have taken with him to be perfectly honest.
Parker
The Parker ranking is a bit confusing because I thought they were really high on him. I haven’t read anything on their forum that gives me an idea why they have dropped him (if they have dropped him).
Rondon
He has been impressive, may be a bit to high too early but it’s a judgment call as are a lot of their rankings.
Carrasco/Alonso
I agree with both of these, to high for me.

If positional adjustment are so important
Why is Montero so high?
Maybe the Rangers should play Smoak at catcher. Can’t be any worse than Montero and it would apparently make him the best prospect in baseball.
by alskor on Aug 1, 2025 10:51 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Because he is still at C and his bat is probably the best bat in the minors so even if he moves to 1B he has guys like Smoak beat.

Wow........
I think they may have 1 guy right on the entire list! Bumgarner at 23 and Smoak at 9 kills this list!

did you post this just so you could ridicule it? Why not post your top 25 for everyone to see and critique, since you think you’re more right about this than they are?

Guts
I love the guts Project Prospect always show when evaluating players. Similar to Sickels. They refuse to bow to pressure and the consensus. They really earned my respect last season when they kept ranking Chris Davis quite lower than any other prospect source and stressed concerns. People on the boards there were going nuts about Davis and ridiculing Adam and the rest of the staff when Davis was doing well. Well….look who’s projection looks better now? Time will tell…he is still young but lots of people have already given up on Davis after thinking he was a future stud.

Looks solid as ever from the guys at PP
I disagree with some of their assessments, sometimes significantly so, but these guys are as good as anybody as far as breaking out of groupthink.
I tend to think they overvalue rate statistics a bit . . .Santana is a little Hermida-esque to me at this point, as is Weglarz. Personally I really can’t Weglarz anywhere near this high - for a guy who’s almost all bat, he does have significant questions left to be answered offensively speaking.
No Michael Taylor? :( But that’s nitpicking . . .I’d say a lot of this list is pretty close to dead on.

Where's Josh Vitters?
The kid has mashed this year and started the year around 40. I think he at least warrants a spot at 25.

Both of those guys have MAJOR red flags
Vitters has awful plate displine and Bumgarner has average, at best, secondary stuff.

Gutsy list...
but overall I like it. Don’t like Weglarz, Morrison, or Gamel too much though. I think Martinez is alo too high. I would have moved Parker, Latos, and Alvarez up a little. I think Parker is the third or fourth best pitching prospect right now.
by joegonzo on Aug 1, 2025 9:36 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Morrison looks good where he is but I agree Latos and Parker should at least be above Carrasco.
by Ion293 on Aug 1, 2025 9:45 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I feel like people either LOVE Carrasco or hate him. I’m in the latter for what it’s worth. Interesting list, I think the Bumgarner concerns are a bit overblown, but that’s just me. They have the right players, but the difference between a player being 5 or 6 really isn’t that huge to me

LaPorta
I don’t understand the criticism this guy receives on prospect lists. Okay he is age appropriate and not younger, but he is mashing AAA (especially recently), and it is the Indians fault for not bringing him up earlier. I think it’s too early to write off LaPorta as a top prospect (1-15ish).

redo
well, that 0-5 stinker kind of put a dud into his last 10 games or so, but nevertheless, I think in due time we will see Laporta get back into conversation among the top hitters in the game. With Marte going to first, I’m assuming he will play more LF for the Indians?
by ChalupaCabrera on Aug 1, 2025 11:02 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I make no pretense to knowing the prospects particularly well, but
I wonder what they see in Carrasco that puts him on this list as compared to Wade Davis and Jeremy Hellickson who are not.
by bobr on Aug 1, 2025 11:29 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
You gotta be kidding me
Fernado martinez ahead of Stanton that’s crazy
Carrasco ahead of Parker and Latos???
Bumgarner 23???? One bad start doesn’t drop him that far
Gamel at 13 is too high
by mlefkee2 on Aug 2, 2025 1:51 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
I agree
I’m not convinced F-Mart will be a force at the major league level. He’s got a pretty diminutive frame — much smaller than his listed 6-1 height. I look at Stanton, and I see a perennial 35+ home run hitter. No way Martinez is a better prospect than Stanton.
It’s becoming trendy to pay exclusive attention to strikeouts and walks for pitchers, and then completely disregard everything else. Yeah, hits and ERA are heavily influenced by defense and park factors. Still, you have to be very concerned with Carrasco’s numbers this year. He’s gotten absolutely rocked.
Gamel has no athleticism. I don’t see him even becoming an average major league player. AAAA type.
Bumgarner is overrated, though. He has nothing but a low-90s fastball. Good luck, John Halama.

I agree Stanton is the better overall prospect, mostly because of Martinez’ inability to stay on the field. One thing that is working in his favor, though, is that it appears he will be able to handle CF adequately at the MLB level, which previously was in question.
by T Pac on Aug 2, 2025 2:08 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
The correct thing to do is to look at strikeouts, walks, and GB rate
and THEN disregard everything else. Or to be more precise, disregard the rest of a pitcher’s STATS.
Carrasco’s GB rate is basically fine, maybe a little below average but nothing suggesting he’ll give up tons of home runs in the majors. His K/BB rate is very good, he’s pretty young— not much not to like there.

Notwithstanding your commendable support of Brett Anderson's awesomeness,
this question basically caused your evaluations to lose all credibility in my eyes. I’d have difficulty thinking of a player who resembled Mat Gamel LESS than Jeff Keppinger, unless it was a pitcher…

Keppinger's career minor league IsoP is .100
Gamel’s is .190. Keppinger has far more BBs than Ks in his minor league career, Gamel has a 2-1 K/BB ratio. Even if they ended up posting a similar OPS to one another, they’d get there in very different ways.

Jacoby Ellsbury and Mark Teahen!
…wait, what’s that, you say? Similar OPSes has nothing to do with “resemblance”? Shocking.

Chris Carter
Hes gotta be top 25 now. After 2008 hitting 39 HRs with a 930OPS he comes back in 2009 OPSing 959 while hitting for more average. This year hes 3/22418/541. With 12 stolen bags with 2 caught stealing. He leads the Texas league in HRs/Hits/Doubles/OBP/Slugging %/OPS/Toal Bases/Runs Scored and is 4th in average and 2nd in walks. The guy can just rake.

Not sure that makes him a top 25 value
Horrible defense and/or DH status probably drops him to the mid-30s. For all that he’s progressed as a hitter this year, his continued inability to develop even a hint of defensive skill has to hold him back.

Looked bad at 1B when I saw him Thursday
He had 3 bloop singles a one rocket in the game at the dish. Cardenas looked really nice at 3B and Josh Donaldson apparently likes to throw from his knees because he did it twice when he didn’t have too.

I dont think he ever plays a defensive position in Oakland.
1st base is a log jam already. He wont play the outfield. So to me I dont care bout his defense since hes a DH.

Ok, but DHs have to hit like crazy men to be valuable
He can put up a .900 OPS in Oakland and he’s still only like a 3.5 WAR player. That’s good, it’s a step in the right direction, but I don’t think it’s enough to put you up in that kind of rarefied air.

+1
And he has substantially cut his strikeout rate while showing huge month to month improvement. He just has to be on a list like this at the moment, although there are those who have recently said that he won’t be an option until 2011 I don’t see why you don’t promote him to AAA tomorrow and perhaps even give him a taste of the majors in September with the idea of calling him up for good mid-season next year if everything continues to come together for him.

this list is ridiculous
first off, jarrod parker at 21 is crazy. he’s easily top 15, possibly 10. same thing for bumgarner. matt gamel at 13? i wouldnt even have him on this list. being a rangers homer, i love smoak, but he should not bet at 9(yet). i think hes got top 5 prospect potential, but give him some more time. and forgive me, but why the hell is nick weglarz on this list? dude has moderate power, not much else. i wouldnt even have him in my top 50, let alone top 25. you know, usually prospect rankings end up with a lot of discussions regarding minor differences. i.e. so and so should be 2 more spots up, etc. but this list is quite possibly one of the worst lists i have ever seen. there are so many things on here that make me wonder wtf these guys were smokin when they wrote up this list, cuz i may want some.

Personally I would take Morrison over FMart
Heck Stanton can and has played CF plenty as well, he could easily play it in the mlb with maybin he wont have to. Should be above of Fmart, but.
83 AB, .313/.500/.554 (1.054), 31/15 BB/K, 5 HR,
What more can you ask for morrison last month? Finally healthy for the season and he walked over 1/4th of his at bats, had double the BB to K ratio and on top of that is averaging almost a walk a game. Not even gonna get into the power showing up finally.
wish could of seen what would of happend if he didnt get slowed with an injury for the first half.
