Monday Baseball Discussion: Heyward vs. Villalona

Here's a baseball discussion question for those who wish to avoid the off-topic economic thread.

If you could have either Jason Heyward of the Braves system for your farm system, or Angel Villalona of the Giants system for your farm system, who would you pick? Does Heyward's broader skill base and defensive value counteract Villalona's youth and power potential?

Good Question

Villalona has some pretty impressive HR totals as an 18 year old, Heyward as a 19 year old displayed not just power potential, but the ability to hit for average, get on base via the base on balls, strike out a whole lot less then Villalona, and be a catalyst in a lineup by not only driving in runs, but being in run scoring situations. He also has a bit more speed then Villalona evidenced by his 6 triples on the season, compared to the 0 by his counterpart. Add in the defensive prowess and I say you have a possible future all star in the bigs

Not much of a contest, is it?

At least from what we’ve seen so far. Villalona could be a beast, but he’s limited defensively, his approach at the plate is still somewhat rudimentary, and he’s always going to have to keep an eye on his girth. Heyward, meanwhile, is rapidly approaching elite status, in terms of his overall tool set. Villalona, if he reaches his ceiling, will have the advantage power-wise, but that’s about it.

I’m a Giants fan but I think Heyward is the better prospect right now. That can always change.

Objectivity

One thing you can say about us Giants fans (at least the ones who post here) is that we’re objective. I too voted for Heyward, although I hope like heck that I’m wrong.

Heyward plays a position that is far less demanding offensively, as noted he’s only a year older than the defensively-challenged Villalona, and AnVil had a HORRIBLE K/BB ratio, while Heyward’s was certainly acceptable.

As much as I like Angel, I basically have to agree with this.

Less arm, more talk. Raisingcain is a GAMER.

Villalona

I will go out on a limb and go with Angel. What he did as primarily a 17 year old this season is extremely impressive. I love his power potential and could see him hitting 40 plus bombs in his prime.

I don't see anything Villalona can do

that Heyward cannot (offensively). Other parts of the game are obviously in Heyward’s favor. A more fitting contest would have been Heyward vs. Moustakas (apologies for the potential hijack of thread)…

I’ve yet to see the latter play but am very familiar w/ Heyward (called him a fringe top 10 prospect for this yr upon draft). I know the times we played his teams we could not get him out unless he hit it right at people. Tried to pitch around him some w/ tons of offspeed on the outer half, he would wait and kill it to oppo field. No FBs for strikes, but try to sneak one or 2 inside he would hammer that too. My team didn’t have a guy who could throw over 90 then but a few others did, he had trouble w/ inside heat, every teenager does (incl. the younger Upton, but that was his only foil). Outside of Upton (maybe) his is the best HS bat I have ever seen in my 10+ yrs of this. I doubt he keeps his speed past age of 22/23 but I see a string of 1.000+ OPS and 40-45 HRs seasons in his peak yrs. Also quick feet/hands, a limber athlete for a kid his size, he should “age” well too.

He reminds me

a lot of an Ellis Burks type of hitter. A guy you can put in the 5 hole and count on producing year in and out. I could see a borderline HOF type career for Heyward right now.

Mischievously implosive purple pitching staff.

I don't see how it's that close...

How many 17 year old “prodigies” actually make, let alone succeed in, the majors? Heyward looks like the next superstar OF. As a comparison, I have Heyward at #3 in my Top 25, while Villalona was left off the list. As to what Dew said, I have Heyward slightly above Moose, but I am VERY high on both of them.

by InclineInvestments on Sep 22, 2025 6:37 PM EDT   0 recs

My take

Villalona looks a little tubby already while Heyward seems to be the better athlete. Villalona can eat himself out of professional baseball before he is 25 while Heyward seems primed to make a steady climb to being a Top 5 prospect and eventually a much safer bet to fulfill his potential.

The power will be neglible unless Villalona turns out to be the right-handed version of Ryan Howard.

Villalona

I know it’s probably been overstated but Villalona’s improvement over the course of the season was quite impressive. Sure overall the numbers arent that spectactular but the fact that each month there was marked improvement in almost all categories I thought spoke volumes.

by Franchise55 on Sep 22, 2025 9:19 PM EDT   0 recs

Good point

Good point about AnVil’s improvement as the season went on. In the rookie league, Wendell Fairley’s improvement was also noticeable, as each month he kept improving his batting average by 40 points per month.

Big V

Yes, there is no question at this point in time that Heyward is a sure pick over Villalona, but I feel that this thread is really not giving enough credit to what big V could potentially become at the same time…what he did as a 17 yr old for most of the season is pretty excellent. He has big time power potential and many years to learn improved plate discipline. Heyward is the safer pick here, but I’d say if Villalona reaches his potential, he could be a total beast.

This guys could put up some MONSTER offensive seasons. Sure he has a lot of risk, but his upside is tremeondous.

No doubt Heyward is safer now, but this thread is short changing Villalona’s potential quite a bit. A hitter at 18 for most of the year (and played organized prep baseball), has had a whole hell of a lot more experience than a player who was 17 for most of the year, and for the D.R. (where ‘organization’ is very different matter, and players are lead to develop crazy tools, but certainly not the finer points of the game). Also, even statistically, Villalona compares favorably to other very young latin american players—who have gone on to do very well—at the same age and experience level.

And as some have noted, his upside is tremendous. And as a retort to dew: their HR numbers were close, but Heyward doesn’t have his level of power. You won’t find many scouts that think they are equal in that ability.

Adoptive Parent of Francisco Peguero. He can throw, he can run, he can hit(fastballs), and he's Dominican. What else do you need to know?

by haverecords on Sep 23, 2025 12:14 AM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Upside

The best upside for AnVil would be to hit with SO much power that he would be pitched around and thus forge a high OBP. Right now I could see him as a Pedro Feliz with twice as much power and a much lesser glove.

Stll only

a first baseman…

by alskor on Sep 23, 2025 12:17 AM EDT to parent up   0 recs

He is 18, his position has yet to be really determined. TO be honest, i think Villalona ends up in the outfield. He has a rocket of an arm, which is wasted at first. Also, there have been reports that the organization sees him as a third basemen long term. Also, you have to understand how agressive an assignment it was for Angel to go to Low A as a 17 year old, and he ended up tied for 12th in home runs, and 12th in doubles, incredible power production for his first full year of ball.

As said above, his steady improvment is the most impressive part of his game.

Come this time next year, after Angel hits the Cal league, i feel this argument will be much closer.

by OmahaGiants on Sep 23, 2025 1:04 AM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Sure

My argument isnt that VIllalona is a bad prospect or anything. Im just saying, given similar ceilings Im taking the player with the better defensive tools and better defensive value. The question wasnt
“who will be the better hitter?” and even if it was I probably still take Heyward.

by alskor on Sep 23, 2025 1:11 AM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Me too

As much as I hate to say it, I think I like Heyward better as a hitter, as well. AnVil likely has the higher ceiling — but IMO a clearly lesser chance of hitting it (no pun).

by sharksrog on Sep 23, 2025 5:33 AM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Heyward

If the question was who has the higher potential, there may be something to discuss there but I just really don’t see this as a legitimate question. Villalona has greater raw power and is a bit younger but aside from that, he really has nothing that would make him a better prospect. In terms of his body, speed, plate discipline, defense, positional flexibility, etc. he’s just out of Villalona’s leg.

Again, asking who has the higher ceiling is different, but if you went around to every GM in baseball and they gave an honest answer to this question, I think you’d be hard pressed to find one or two that would say V.

I voted for Heyward

But I think you have to be careful when talking about a kid who turned 18 in august and a kid who turned 19 in august as in only 1 year different..

A college freshman is a very big difference then a high school senior… its kinda like a few months for a new baby is a HUGE deal when as you get older a few months becomes meaningless.

But… going on what Heyward has done .871 OPS in the sally league vs. Villalona .747 OPS in the sally league… i have to go with Heyward, who probably is the more compelte player anyways.. but Villalonas power oculd end up off the charts

Honestly

A better comp would have been Freedie Freeman vs. Villalona since both play 1B and were in the same league.
