I'm not sure these are official, but they're expected

Austin Jackson - Majors
Scott Sizemore - Majors
Fernando Martinez - AAA

Jackson's won the CF job

Apparently there’s some question about Sizemore, but I’d bet money on it.

I'm fine with that

We won’t contend this year and more Triple-A time can’t hurt Tillman.

Ackley in AA

His bat is ready but I’m somewhat surprised they didn’t start him in A+ ball to work out the kinks at 2B.

High Desert the M's A+ level team plays in the most hitter friendly park in the minors

I wouldn’t want him to get within 100 miles of that place considering it would most likely be a detriment to his development than a help. The M’s are really hurting themselves by having a minor league affiliate play there.

Does he need confidence? More than he would get in AA?

Some scouts have said he could hold his own with the bat in the majors right now. I would think he would pick up bad habits from playing in High Desert.

by Scrupio on Mar 27, 2025 10:11 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think High Desert could be good

He could focus on his defense and still be able to handle A+ pitching. In AA it’s likely he’ll slump and that could interfere with his focus on his defense

Likely he'll slump?

What makes you say that? He’s been described as one of the best pure hitter to be drafted in the last decade. At this point I think he’ll do just fine against AA pitching.

by Scrupio on Mar 28, 2025 3:01 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Most hitters & pitchers go through slumps in there first year in pro baseball

I don’t think he’ll go “Lars Anderson” but I do think there will be an adjustment period where he won’t hit as well as he’s used to

Got a late start

after a tweaked knee, then Wilson and Harrison both pitched really well and he still needs refinement of his change and curveball. And if Hunter didn’t get hurt he would have had even less a chance.

Do you think he's first in line if someone goes down?

That’s my interpretation. They didn’t really consider him as a reliever. I guess if McCarthy has a hot start he could change that… and obviously, when Hunter comes back it could change, too.

Hunter would have the first shot if he's healthy at that point

but then it would very likely be Holland. B-Mac needs needs a few months to work on his new sinker and cutter.

awesome

i’m really pleased with that. Washington’s making some good strides. 2010 is still “building”, but 2011 could start to get interesting.

considering the mainstream media slobbering over Heyward already

He’d have to outperform Heyward by a huge margin to overcome the bias most voters already have towards voting for Heyward.

pitchers that might skip a level

Simon Castro — AA (this is pretty much a lock)
Jordan Lyles — AA (no definitive info, but a recent article said this is “likely”)
Shelby Miller — High-A (currently pitching for Hi-A team in Spring Training)

though these would all be very aggressive assignments, I think Lyles starting at AA would be especially noteworthy…he’ll be pitching all of next season at age 19

Castro At AA

I’d love to see him dominate, then get a Sept callup.
Miller at High A is also very interesting. I don’t think it’s that smart of an idea though.

I was a little surprised they never brought him up last year

Castro’s numbers in A ball were pretty astounding - It wasn’t just that he struck out close to 10 batters per game, while walking less than 3, but that those numbers were weakened by a slow start. If you take out his first three games, he had a 147:26 K:BB over 129 IP, or a strikeout rate above 10 and a walk rate below 2. That doesn’t necessarily mean he’ll succeed in the majors, but I would have expected him to at least get a shot at A+ ball.

These are all very interesting.

A little bit of refinement with Lyles’ stuff with land him in the top 10 overall prospects, easy.

by Frederick0220 on Mar 29, 2025 12:09 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Easy? Nah.

For Lyles to land in the top ten, he better pick up 3-5 mph on his fastball, and pull a damn good breaking ball out of nowhere. Command of a decent fastball might be enough to baffle A-ball hitters, but it gets a bit harder as you move up.

by PissedMick on Mar 29, 2025 4:33 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Then how come more guys don't do it?

The last time we’ve had this discussion is with Bumgarner - it is of course very early, he certainly seemed to have success at higher levels, even with his fastball declining in velocity

by OldProspects on Mar 29, 2025 6:28 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I would guess Lyles does pretty well in AA this year

It wouldn’t necessarily make him that much better a prospect than he was going into 2010, though. My personal prediction is that he still Ks a lot of batters but his walks jump noticeably.

I think they're being conservative

I believe Noel Arguelles is headed to high A as well, although its not official yet. Tim Melville should join them, which would give the Blue Rocks one heckuva rotation.

Yeah....

then John “Son of Sam” Lamb will move up to High-A.
