Trade Advice Needed: Trade LaPorta for Domonic Brown?

I need help in consideration of this trade. I'm in a league where you are allowed 8 keepers (6 + a class A and a class B),  plus 8 minor league keepers. Under the current rules, under 225 major league AB qualifies as a minor leaguer, under 550 AB or 180 IP as a Class A, and under 1100 AB or 360 IP as a class B.

Keepers:

MIguel Cabrera, Chase Utley, Evan Longoria, Grady Sizemore, Zach Greinke, Manny Ramirez, Tommy Hanson (A), Nelson Cruz (B)

Jason Heyward, Justin Smoak, Desmond Jennings, Martin Perez, Carlos Santana, Matt LaPorta, Dan Hudson, Chris Withrow.

My thing is, since I have so much major league ready OF help, and also Heyward and possibly Jennings coming this year, as well as an elite 1B, would it be smart to move LaPorta for Brown? What makes me nervous about doing so is reading the scouting reports last year saying LaPorta could have a Braun like impact (ok so it was CBS). Thanks for your help.

Keep LaPorta

Why take on another OF when you already have better OF options? Honestly, your team seems to be stacked – if I was going to get rid of anybody it would be Manny – sell while you can.

Well....

The purpose of taking on someone like Brown is, he’s a few years away which basically “buys” me time whereas LaPorta I gotta use the guy now.

Basically, I was trying to get the highest rated hitter in return for LaPorta who will not be ready this year.

As for Manny, I tried moving him, but since he’s so old and it’s a keeper league, I would have to sell low.

LaPorta

is a fine player, but I don’t think he’s close to Ryan Braun.

I agree with the above posters, keep LaPorta because your OF options are fine. you can always deal LaPorta later.

Hmm

I’m not that big of a fan of Laporta, I think he can be solid but only keeping that many I sorta fail to see him as that valuable as a 1B type. Also with Heyward, Smoak, Jennings, Santana all knocking on the door it seems likely he wouldn’t be that big of a priority to keep. Add to that he had 2 off season surgeries and could not be back up to speed by the time ST/Season starts, It just seems to me Laporta won’t be on the up and up for this season … and to me he is a guy who could lose some good value if he doesn’t perform well this year.

Anyways just some thoughts, hope it helps.

Trade for Brown

If anything, you can buy yourself some more time to move Brown for a piece down the road. If your league is anything like ours, people will be drooling over a toolsy prospect like Brown. Plus, it is still uncertain if LaPorta will stick at 1B. LaPorta is a nice player, but I think Brown could yield a higher return in the future.

I dont think this one will kill you

In general I think its a terrible idea to do trades like this. You dont trade a MLB ready commodity for some prospect with uncertain fantasy value. If you did that regularly you would sooner or later get stuck with a dud. More realistically, the prospect ends up less of a fantasy asset. As I said, though, in this particular case you can get away with it if you really want that roster flexibility… I would urge you to try a different approach or get more back.

LaPorta was about as well regarded as Brown is now… So, you should be getting more back considering you’re giving up the more sure thing who will help his owner immediately.
