Comcast Partners with Minor League Ball and SB Nation

Baseball5_medium

Baseball, Green Grass, and Comcast

There are a lot of changes in the works here at Minor League Ball, as the SB Nation network continues to expand and grow. You may have noticed additional corporate sponsors coming on board, as the network is increasingly attractive to companies looking to get their message out. Thanks to you, we have a terrific community site here, and things are only going to improve with this kind of corporate support.
One of our newest and best supporters is Comcast, which is now sponsoring Minor League Ball. We're very grateful for their support, and this is a huge win for SB Nation and Minor League Ball in particular.
Comcast is extending a special offer that I hope you will at least consider.

1) If you are a current Comcast customer, they are offering you a special deal:

Digital Preferred TV with MLB Network for only $9.99 a month for the first six months.

2) If you are not yet a Comcast customer, the deal is even sweeter:

You can switch from Dish Network or AT&T and get MLB Extra Innings for the bargain-basement price of FREE. That's right, FREE. As in FREE BASEBALL.

Only Comcast brings you MLB Extra Innings and their excellent coverage of MLB Network. Dish Network and AT&T U-Verse can't compare.

To take part in this offer, pick up the telephone and dial 1-800-COMCAST.

Thanks to outstanding partners like Comcast, SB Nation and Minor League Ball are going to get better and better. Spring is here, the grass is green, and the diamonds are about to come alive. Let your baseball viewing experience come alive with Comcast.  Let's play ball!

Comcast is an SB Nation Partner and sponsor of SB Nation baseball communities. This post is a one of a series of sponsored posts related to our relationship with Comcast.

Not a fan of advertiser content being written into the site content.

I have no problems with banner ads or even popups, but SBN having user content generated for their advertising partners is just another way to discourage users from coming to this site. I have been following your work john for a long time and tis type of advertising on a regular basis will cause me to visit less and less. I read the user generated content for your thoughts and opinions on sports and life not for advertisements.

I don't particularly care for advertising.

But at the same time, I don’t think it really detracts from the site too much. At least in this case it’s even relevant interests-wise.

If you don’t like it, skip it.

sponsors

We need sponsors to keep the website running and improving, and we make no apologies for that.

That said, posts such as this one will not become a regular thing.

You forgot to mention that your comment was sponsored by Pepsi!

Now in Diet, Regular, Classic, Cherry, and Goat flavors.

There is nothing better than a tall glass of Pepsi Goat, it will make you more handsome, smarter, and better at fantasy Baseball.

 Oh yeah, that’s right.

Pepsi Goat…. drink it instead of milk.

well . . .

“That said, posts such as this one will not become a regular thing.”

John, I love and respect the hell out of your work, and the same goes for my consideration of you as a person. And frankly, I have absolutely no complaints because I’d rather you do what you have to do in order to run your business to its fullest potential, which means you and your family are enjoying the best livelihood possible. That’s worth a Comcast ad or twenty to me.

At the same time, just how sure are you of this? If the fine folks at Comcast want regular plugs, let’s be honest here, I can’t see how you would or could say no.

+1

John, you’re a highly-reputed expert in minor league baseball! You’re not a TV salesman! We’ll click all you want on the banner ads to generate well-deserved revenue for you, just please don’t pollute your content with this stuff.

Who are any of us to tell John what to put on his site?

Last time I checked he provides us with free content on a regular basis as well as a place to carry on our own discussions and topics. If he had hidden the Comcast thing in the middle of a Prospect Retro or Not A Rookie…well maybe you’d have something to complain about. As is, it’s clear what this post was and it’s easy to just ignore it and go on. For the life of me I can’t imagine saying I’d quit reading a website or that I’d visit it less because of something like this.

The consumers of his content

If it were my site or business, I’d want to know how those who consume my service think. Feedback is helpful. What he does with that feedback is entirely up to him.

Personally, while I prefer editorial and advertising to be segregated, it doesn’t matter much to me and I hope John can generate enough income from the site to make its existence justified. But if someone doesn’t like something about his site or thinks it can be better, don’t you think it would be valuable for John to know that?

by Rotofan on Mar 26, 2025 10:11 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Well

If this website wasn’t part of a larger network, then yes I’m sure what each person here wanted would be extremely important to John. However, since this site is part of SBN and SBN has a partnership with Comcast we have this:

Comcast is an SB Nation Partner and sponsor of SB Nation baseball communities. This post is a one of a series of sponsored posts related to our relationship with Comcast.

This isn’t John randomly doing an ad for Comcast on his own or something. I would guess he put this on the main page either because it’s what was asked of him/required of him through the sponsorship deal, because he thought it was a great deal to share with the readers here, or a combination of both. I just can’t imagine why someone would visit the site less because of a post like this that can easily be ignored. Seems like complaining for complaining’s sake to me.

Interesting point

So I checked out one of the sister site, Over the Monster, and you are correct, the ad is there as well, although the copy introducing it is different, the comments complaining are similar. I suspect if enough posters at enough sites share their concerns, their concerns will be considered by SB Nation. While I don’t share that concern, I’m certainly not going to be dismissive of those who do. Its feedback and it’s one factor of many to be considered by SB Nation.

by Rotofan on Mar 26, 2025 2:23 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Ok

I’m sure SBN weighs the financial value of the partnerships with sponsors like Comcast, CBS, Yahoo, etc. and figures out if the potential impact of the loss of a percentage of readers over ads like that outweighs the revenue from the partnerships. If the partnerships provide more revenue, we’ll keep seeing them. As successful as SBN has been, I’d be surprised if they didn’t take these things into account prior to making the partnerships.

who are any of us?

we’re his customers. duh.

by larry on Mar 26, 2025 10:12 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yes we are

And hopefully corporate sponsorship deals SBN can make will trickle down and provide more income for John allowing him to take more road trips to provide us with more first hand accounts. Anything that could allow John a better lifestyle and that could lead to his ability to provide us more information is a good thing in my opinion. I just don’t see a reason to fuss over something that you can ignore if you’re not interested. Like I said, he didn’t stick the ad in the middle of a Prospect Retro or something, so I don’t see what there is to complain about.

ads masquerading as blog content are, in my opinion, inappropriate.

instead of taking the money, we chose at southsidesox to not do this post for that reason. i can easily see why people are complaining. one would still need to read at least the first two paragraphs to realize it’s an ad. blithely saying someone can “ignore it” if they choose is silly. i can attempt to ignore all the ads on this or any other site if i want. however, when they become overly intrusive - say, when they’re masquerading as content posts - they’re kind of hard to ignore.

by larry on Mar 26, 2025 2:47 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

What?

How do you need to read more than the title to know this isn’t going to be actual content for the site? John didn’t give it some kind of misleading title or insert it in the middle of an actual piece he wrote. It’s a stand alone post with a clear title that anyone not interested could avoid. I don’t see what there is to complain about.

by gatling on Mar 26, 2025 3:25 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

you think the title is clear. good for you. a clear title is "this is an advertisement for comcast".

i guess everyone else who is complaining about this across sb nation are just retards.

and, whatever the title, advertisements like this should not be posts in the first place.

by larry on Mar 26, 2025 3:46 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Don't put words in my mouth

I don’t understand why someone would complain about something they could ignore, I didn’t question anyone’s mental capacity because of that. I don’t have interest in seeing what the community projects for a player like Jason Heyward, so when I see that title I just don’t read that post. I don’t see a difference here, if you’re not interested about Comcast partnering with SBN you don’t read it. John didn’t post that instead of producing actual content for us, and he didn’t pass it off as actual content by sticking it after the jump or in the middle of actual content. I just can’t see why something like this would make someone want to read the site less.

The problem is that it is a very slippery slope

once content driven adds on a special basis becomes an accepted business practice, what is next? Eventually you have to draw a line between advertisement and content. The more frequently that a blogger/writer/journalist use what is considered an avenue for content delivery for paid advertisement the more the customer or consumer questions the no partial nature of the content. Once a delivery stream is tainted, it is very difficult to change that perception.

"Eventually you have to draw a line between advertisement and content"

This is a big part of why I refused to run this on Athletics Nation. Ads are ads, content is content; just my opinion.

Clarification: I've asked John to delete my comment if he's willing

because I fear my comment did not come across as intended. It was not my intention to suggest he shouldn’t have run the post, just to explain why I made the choice I made.

Don't know if this is a good partnership

Does this mean that minorleagueball and sbnation will follow Comcast’s customs of shady business practices, no customer support and a limit on what we can read on the site?

SB Nation's CEO checking in ...

Thought I’d join the thread. A lot of important points have been made here and I mainly wanted to let you know that we are listening and encourage the dialog. SB Nation is in the business of celebrating and supporting great sports content and communities. We realize we don’t have a business if we don’t please our audiences and would never do anything so short-sighted as to squander your loyalty. We definitely want to label sponsored posts clearly. If some feel we didn’t go far enough, point taken. We also are very sensitive about not doing it too frequently. Not only would that be bad for the communities, but bad for our marketers too. Finally, of course, we would never, ever do anything to compromise the integrity of the editorial or the communities. Laxtono makes a good point about finding that line. Sports media survives via sponsoring content, whether it is talk radio, TV segments or whatever. The key is disclosure and transparency and we commit to that. Not only because you deserve it but because it is good business.

With regard to Comcast, they want to support Minor League Ball because they love it as much as you do. In fact, one of the key individuals there is an active member of this community and worships at the altar of John. He would never want to see this site change. I’m not only grateful because I run the company, but as a consumer of grassroots media, I’m really impressed that a big company would understand the nature of real sports fans so well.

Marketers that advertise with us are savvy. They know that some people might be critical of their products, but they want to hear the feedback as well as educate sports fans on what they have to offer. They want to it in an above the board way. They have many options on how they can spend their money. I for one applaud brands that are smart and strong enough to advertising in conversational environments like ours. An easier way out would be just do the same old thing on broadcast or with less engaged audiences.

If you enjoy communities like John’s, you probably would agree that brands that support us are probably brands that “get it.” Not only would I never let any advertisers threaten the fabric of the community, but no savvy advertiser would want to do so.

Keep up the good work

Just wanted to know that as a consumer of many of your sites, I have really enjoyed the diversity and quality of offerings.

I also am pleased you are taking such an active role listening to readers of this site and others. I am a journalist who writes for a major newspaper chain that is placing greater focus on using our web sites in ways that preserve editorial independence while expanding advertising revenue. That balance isn’t easy to achieve but I know having engaged leadership at the top is a essential.

how do i take advantage of this great deal?

as a current comcast customer, i was wondering how i would go about taking advantage of this incredibly generous offer from comcast? it’s not every day you see a deal like this! comcast should be “com”-mended for being so giving!

people are upset about this! i thought that would help. you’re welcome.

seriously though, do i need a code or specific link to get in on this? i’m paying like 80 bucks a month for comcast cable w/o the package mlb network is in, $10 sounds much better. do i just call up and mention my love for minorleagueball.com? i need details!
