Here are some final thoughts as the 2016 MLB draft approaches. Note that these are my opinions, which are not necessarily reflective of what people inside the game think.
With that disclaimer out there, here are some random things to talk about
****I'm glad I'm not the Phillies because I don't know what I'd do at first overall. A.J. Puk doesn't seem quite polished enough to be first-overall for me as a college pitcher, but Jason Groome seems way too risky, Mickey Moniak seems more solid than impactful to me, and all of the college guys have some question mark of some kind. I might go with Kyle Lewis if I were the Phils.Perhaps I'm too negative on Moniak. Do you see him as a future star?
****It seems mandatory for everyone to mention Blake Rutherford being 19 years old. It's a concern but are people making too much of it?
****I can't even tell you why, so discard this comment if you like since there's no back-up, but I'm not overly wild about Dakota Hudson.
****I DO like Eric Lauer, in fact my intuition likes him better than any of the college right-handers except maybe Justin Dunn and T.J. Zeuch, and it isn't just because of Lauer's gaudy stats. In terms of present pitchability combined with very quality stuff, I think he offers the best combination of safety and under-rated upside of any college pitcher.
****I am generally suspicious of college closers as prospects but Zack Burdi is an exception given that he commands his heat so well.
****University of Florida right-hander Dane Dunning is another guy who strikes me as under-rated.
****Vanderbilt outfielder Bryan Reynolds. . .he keeps getting mocked in the 20s, but I predict he goes higher than that, maybe in the early teens, maybe even sooner for someone cutting a deal. He's not slug with tools and he thrives for a top program.
