Hello everybody, welcome back to the Minor League Ball Gameday. As long as my schedule allows it, I will try to throw this up early in the day and fill out the sections as the day progresses. Be sure to check back frequently to see the new additions throughout the day.
It was the half-way point for five of the minor leagues, with the Southern, Carolina, California, Midwest, South Atlantic Leagues all having their All Star game last night. You can peek down to the Duels of the Day to see how the starting pitchers fared.
In the Southern League, Kris Bryant was the only Top 150 position player to get in the game, going 1-5 with a strike out for the North. With the All Star game out of the way, the Cubs promoted Bryant to AAA Iowa. Helium Tank member Brent Suter did not fare well either, giving up two runs on three hits with one strike out in just 0.2 innings out of the North bullpen.
Rays utility man Taylor Motter took home the MVP trophy with a 3-3 game, two runs scored and the go ahead RBI in the 6th for the South. Robert Stephenson was the only Top 150 pitcher in the game, throwing an inning for the South with two hits and one run allowed with a strike out.
The Carolina League and California Leagues squared off against one another rather than have individual inter-league match ups. The Cal came out on top with a two-run homer off the bat of Reds outfielder Kyle Waldrop. He also kicked in an RBI single, was caught stealing and booted a ball, and was named the MVP of the game. The Cal line up was littered with Top 150 players as short stops Carlos Correa and Corey Seager were both 0-2 with a strike out. Infielder Trevor Story played second and was 1-2, Hunter Renfroe held down right field and was 0-3 with a punch out, and Jesse Winker came in late as a pinch hitter and struck out. Ben Lively started and went two scoreless innings, striking out two. Lively was also promoted to AA Pensacola following the game (about time). Helium Tanker Josh Hader surrenderd a walk, a run, one hit and struck out two.
Jorge Alfaro was the only Top 150 guy in the Carolina League, going 1-2 with a triple and a run scored off Hader. A duo of Helium Tank pitchers from the Royals threw an inning a piece. Christian Binford surrendered the long ball to Waldrop, his only hit, and struck out two. Jonathan Dziedzic threw the next inning and posted a clean frame.
In the Midwest League All Star Game, the West squad only gave up two hits the entire game, and ran a no-hitter through seven innings. Edwin Diaz was the only Top 150 pitcher to get in on the action, walking one and striking out one in his inning of work. Top 150 catcher Clint Coulter was 0-1 with a walk, and Helium Tank member Kody Eaves was 1-2 with a walk and a strike out for the West side. Lead off man Herschel "Boog" Powell took home the MVP award with a huge day, going 2-3 with a double, two walks, two RBI, three runs, two stolen bases (including home), and one strike out.
Three Helium Tank players and a Top 150 third baseman were in the East line up and neither of the four could manage a hit. Kean Wong and Joey Curletta were 0-2 while Mallex Smith was 0-3 bringing up the rear. Top 150 hitter Mitch Nay was also helpless, going 0-3 with two strike outs. Sleeper Alert! Jacob Faria allowed two hits in his inning, striking out one.
It was North vs South in the South Atlantic League and unlike the Civil War, this one did not have a winner. Through nine innings it was knotted up at 2-2 in Hickory before both squads plated two runs in the 10th inning. The game was then called a tie at 4-4. The North team had the most star power with starting pitcher Hunter Harvey working one inning with a hit and walk surrendered. In the line up, more 2013 first rounders, JP Crawford and Reese McGuire, played with McGuire going 1-1 with a triple, sac fly, and RBI. Crawford finished 0-4 with a walk, run scored and three punch outs with a fielding error as well. Sleeper Alert! Trey Mancini was 1-3 with an RBI and Rafael Baustista was 2-3 with a run scored and a stolen base.
The South had some thump in the line up with Top 150 hitters David Dahl, Ryan McMahon, and Aaron Judge getting playing time. Dahl was 1-2 with a double, run scored, and a walk out of the lead off spot. Judge was 1-3 with two RBI, and McMahon came up empty each time up, going 0-3 with a strike out. Helium Tanker Victor Reyes was 0-4 with a walk, strike out, and was caught stealing. In retrospect, there was a winner in this contest, and it was Dominique Taylor. Coming in for Dahl, Taylor was 2-3 with a double and two RBI, being named the MVP of the game. The best part is by winning the MVP, he also won a brand spankin new recliner.
There are also some updates to the injury list which includes a handful of new names. As always, you can check out the rest of the stats from yesterday below in the link and enjoy!
